I have a question about your overall thesis on motherhood and Loustat. You said the line “a wolf congratulated for not killing her pups line” was “definitely about motherhood”. As for your take on the final scene of Louis looking at a painting of a mother and daughter in a scene that’s very much about him coming to terms with his loss, as his daughter’s dress hangs in the background: “The maternal side there I can see, but I don't think it's as absolute as others, just personally.” Am I correct in thinking you believe the show suggests Lestat is more closely aligned with the role of mother than Louis in their family dynamic?

I mean, I'd argue that I don't have a thesis, anon. This isn't Tumblr University, I'm not writing dissertations, and you're certainly not peer reviewing me when you send asks like this that are pretty blatantly trying to goad me into arguing a point you want to rebut.

But no, I'll answer in good faith, and say that I think Claudia's mother is dead and that she has two fathers, and the desire in this fandom to ask 'well, which one is the mother' is just another way of asking a gay couple 'well, which one's the woman?' Neither of them are, and the fact that they don't fit into a heteronormative understanding of what a family is is, I would argue, literally the point of the unholy family.

When I talked about Lestat's line about being a wolf as being about motherhood, that - to me - is about connecting him to his past, and relating him back to his own mother, and I also think from the show's writers perspective, it's about Anne.

Lestat's mother in TVL is the one who relates child birth to Lestat killing the wolves, and it was Lestat killing the wolves that lead to his own death, as it's a part of why Magnus picks him. He is sitting on that stage now watching the death of his child, in the city he died in, in the city his mother did too. It makes sense to me that he would be thinking of his mother, who birthed five dead children, who lost two more through mob execution in the French Revolution, as his own daughter is executed. It makes sense to me that that would relate back to Gabrielle's major, arguably character-defining monologue from TVL where she talks about child birth as an act both violent and entirely isolating, so as to be like killing wolves alone in the woods, and it makes sense to me in that moment that Lestat would relate for the first time not to being the killer, but to being the thing that he hunted. It's death, violence, isolation, loneliness, birth, all things Anne relates to motherhood in TVL.

Which is to say it's thematic, not literal, because Anne - a woman, and the author of this female gothic series - was clearly interested in exploring death and motherhood as a theme, which makes sense as she herself is a mother who experienced the loss of a child. It's not about literally saying that Lestat is 'more closely aligned with the role of mother', it's a scene that - again, to me - feels like it's in conversation with the female gothic components of the books, with Anne, and with a formative experience in Lestat's life as he's on the cusp of experiencing a new one.

Regardless of that though, Lestat is Claudia's maker, but he's also his mother's maker, Louis', Nicki's, Antoinette's - it's not always a parental act. In fact, it's usually not for him, and I don't think it is for Louis who made Madeleine either. There is a blood bond there though between Lestat and Claudia that does not exist between Louis and Claudia. Does that make him her mother? I don't think so, no, but it does add a layer to their specific dynamic that Louis doesn't have with her because, again, he did not make her.

The scene with Louis and the painting and Claudia's dress at the end is a loving act, absolutely, and it's a scene that I adore, but it's also intrinsically tied to the painting of Paul, and the apartment with Armand (which inherently calls upon their fractured dynamic in Paris where Louis existed as Claudia's brother too), which to me, shifts the meaning away from motherhood specifically. Again, I can appreciate that other people read it as being maternal, and obviously I think Louis' her parent, not her brother, but in terms of the visual language of that sequence, I think it's a lot wider than some acknowledge.

There are times I really worry that Sonic fans forget that their current hyperfixation and interest is in fact a children's series.

Like it's good to hold things in a critical light (healthy even) but there are times where I see takes where people are like "UGH WHY ARE THESE CHARACTER'S MAKING THESE STUPID BABY JOKES" or "WHY IS THE DRAMA SO LIMITED AND BASELESS".

basically basically basically a lot of people (white in particular since u refuse to learn the histories of black community organizing) act as though they are speaking intracommunally when they tweet or whatever, which for obvious reasons is not true. like everyone can see that shit. but because they have no concept of the outward-facing nature of their discourse, they will say shit like “there are lesbians that have sex with men” which, if you give it the benefittttt of the doubt and add a bunch of qualifiers, is like okay whatever yeah all attempts to categorize human behavior will fail, and sexuality is fluid, and certain behaviors will always slip through the cracks blablablabla.

but the main statement they are making, “there are lesbians who have sex with men,” is, again, not being spoken across the table at a gay bar, is not being written down in a journal, but is being made in a public online space, meaning it has a potential impact on the outside world. and what lgbt kids of this decade have oh so stupidly forgotten (what we have been able to forget bc of the blessings of our predecessors) is that the shit we put out in the world is not just theoretical, is not just academic, is not just personal, but is strategically designed to make an appeal to and to reckon with mainstream narratives. (the very alliance of “lgbt” is not naturally occuring, of course, though for young people it may seem so. it is, in fact, a tactical alliance.)

SO, if we think for even a moment about mainstream narratives, the sentence “lesbians can have sex with men” does not bring to mind the failure of the social construct, the fluidity of sexuality, the decolonization of sexual roles. it brings to mind, quite obviously, the historically prevalent oppressive role that a heteronormative society, its heterosexual men in particular, has played in “turning out” lesbians, often to the extent of corrective rape. it is myopic to think that fighting for a prioritization of fluid sexuality in conversation is at all more urgent than combatting the still very prescient narrative of lesbian women possessing an innate biological urge for heterosexual sex that can be “unlocked” via certain means.

in our current climate, insisting that lesbians can have sex with men keeps lesbians in danger of homophobic sexual abuse, misogynistic harassment and kidnappings, and all the other historical accoutrements of that narrative. insisting that lesbians do not have sex with men, on the other hand, puts certain members of our community— say, women who identify wholly with lesbianism while still having one particular man they enjoy sex with— at risk of being called “problematic” by gay 20-somethings online.

“Are you heading home?” He asked.

You liked him a lot, and you were sure he liked you too. There were always moments when everything felt tense or you sensed something stronger than friendship between you, but neither of you ever acted on it.

“I missed it here,” you said as you entered Spencer’s apartment.

“Did you?” He asked as he watched you head straight to his bookshelf.

“Are you kidding? I love this place; it’s so cozy, so interesting, so lovely, so… you.”

“No, no, don’t worry. I have that book in every edition that exists.” You laughed. “It’s my favorite for a reason.”

“Yeah, but—I thought you might want this one.” Spencer walked over to the bookshelf in front of you and pulled out the book from a drawer.

The book was filled with sticky notes. You glanced at it and saw it was covered with annotations everywhere.

“I—well—I made notes while reading because—I don’t know—I wanted to give it to you. I thought you’d like to see how I was doing as I read it.” He looked a bit nervous.

You looked at him and then back at the book. You were so surprised that no words came out of your mouth, which only made Spencer more anxious.

“No—you don’t have to keep it—It wasn’t my intention to make you feel like you had to read it, I didn’t even ask if you wanted it, I’m really sorry!”

“You’re sorry?” You raised your eyebrows. “Sorry for giving me the best gift anyone’s ever given me?” You smiled broadly.

“What? You want it?” He sighed in relief.

“Are you kidding? This is incredible.” You threw your arms around him in a hug. “I love it! I can’t wait to see what you wrote.” You pulled away from the hug to skim through the book.

“No! Don’t do that!” He placed his hands over the book so you couldn’t read it. “Read it at home, okay?”

“Why!? I want to read it now.” You laughed and moved the book out of his reach.

“The thing is, I—you know—I wrote a lot…” He looked away.

You gave him a knowing look. “Of course, that was the idea, wasn’t it? I’m well aware,” you said teasingly.

“Sure! But… I didn’t just write what I thought about the book.” He looked at you. “I highlighted and underlined things that reminded me of you, and… I wrote you a few things. Just—read it later, okay?”

Suddenly, you felt a bit nervous, your stomach flipping. What did he mean by writing you a few things?

“Oh sure… yeah—sorry.” You closed the book and tucked it under your arm.

“It’s okay! Forget it.” He smiled sweetly. “Help me with the pasta, yeah?”

You smiled back. “What?” You pretended to be offended. “I came here to be treated like a princess, not to get my hands dirty!”

I've been putting these thoughts together for a while now, but while there's discussion going on today about so-called 'toxic positivity' as well as some of the other Veilguard critical takes, I'm finally going to write it down.

I liked The Veilguard. A lot. And I'm not going to qualify that with some statement about the things that could have been done better or even about the development hell it went through. Because "I liked The Veilguard" is a complete sentence, and in fact maybe I'll start saying it more, just like that. (:

Something about me is that I like Taylor Swift (I'm making a point) and I have liked Taylor Swift since I was eleven. And for 90% of that time, people have laughed at me for it, or told me that she isn't even a good singer or that she dates too much or that her music is immature. My own sister brings up how much she hates Taylor Swift constantly without prompt. And guess what?

I don't care.

That may be your opinion. And believe it or not, that's fine!

It is, however, very weird when I am asked my favorite artist and I say Taylor Swift and people feel compelled to tell me how much they hate her/her music/that she's not talented. I don't know, I have yet to meet one of the spooky scary bi lesbians but I personally think I'd feel more uncomfortable or even unsafe around someone who asks me in public "Haha are you a dyke??? Don't worry I'm not a homophobe I'm reclaiming it" than someone who uses a weird label I don't get. I'm all for disempowering bigots by taking away their slurs, but it seems like people on here treat reclaiming slurs like a silly careless thing while label discourse is the most serious matter in the world. I think you're more likely to harm someone by casually calling them a slur you don't know if they're comfortable with than by accepting someone who uses a label you don't understand.

"Bi lesbians aren't valid! Learn your history!" Hey, do you know why the words you use are considered slurs and you shouldn't call random people that? Learn your history.

I hope this makes sense. Again, I'm not against slur reclamation if it's done sensitively, it just bothers me that some people on Tumblr treat it carelessly while acting like people with weird labels are a huge problem.

(I know people who've identified as bi lesbians longer than I've been alive, and probably longer than most of the Tumblr users have been alive too, so "learn your history" might not be the best argument against that identity, but that's another can of worms.)

I AM GETTING SO HEATED OVER SOME OF THE KRIS DISCOURSE I'M SEEING RN

Like some people are saying that Kris suddenly is unsympathetic now or being a dick or saying they don't feel bad for them anymore and I'M GOING GHOST AHHHHHH

I can see why people could think Kris was sinister in Chapter 1. There's still evidence they're not heartless (how emotional they get thinking of Asriel with the hot chocolate), but the way it's framed and how little of the real them we knew at the time, I can see HOW people at the time could think they were kind of villainous and maybe up to no good. People seemed to tolerate them for their family's sake more than anything (because monsters give the benefit of the doubt when they shouldn't and are too goofy to pick up on warning signs), their pranks seemed kinda mean, they were hard to read, they flashed a knife and a big scary grin at the camera, ahh! Maybe they're possessed by Evil Chara or maybe they ARE Chara or maybe they're just their own kind of evil and we were keeping them in check and now they're going to go kill people and after this we'll switch to Susie and THEY will be the main villain!!

(It feels SO weird to be flashing back to that time lol. Dark days, those were.)

Chapter 2 sunk that COMPLETELY for me and the fandom at large. People DO think fondly of them. Noelle is used to their shenanigans and enjoys their company. They're funny and goofy and deeply, deeply weird. They so, so, SO clearly care deeply about their loved ones, and the Weird Route proved definitively that whatever is happening, they don't want people to get hurt (they're not particularly close to Berdly and they're HORRIFIED by what happened to him and didn't want any of that to happen, going by how upset they were after reuniting with Susie and Ralsei) and they get scared and overwhelmed by what they're put through. We don't know everything about they're thinking, but they're demonstrably a good kid.

We already knew they were up to SOMETHING they weren't telling us. These chapters showed more of that! They went out of their way to show Kris wants to help their friends, but they're bound to this secret plan and they're suffering a lot of anguish over it (passing out drinking?? going sicko mode on the soul after the shit we did to them and their friends in the Weird Route???). They're a TEENAGER in way over their head, they're not malicious or uncaring or being a dick! Nothing has changed since the Kris of Chapter 2, we just got more information on what might be going on. Idk why some people are acting like this is is a huge change that turns everything they thought they knew about Kris on its head.

Despite everything, it's still Kris. They just got a little bit more mystery teased for them and what's REALLY going on. They're a player character fully under our control for most of the chapters and that gets examined in a meta way (cool!!), AND a dynamic character acting behind the scenes with their own secret plans and we don't even know what it is (omg even cooler!!!), AND they're funny and silly and likable and a weird, awkward little guy (YESSSSSS!). Kris is EASILY like one of the best characters of Deltarune and so interesting, and I hate seeing them getting dropped so fast by some just because we got handed a bit more pieces of the mystery like what???

And you know, it's still early, these people might settle down and come back around on em once they think about it more. And I'm reacting to responses I saw on one site, idk if it's a widespread thing or kind of an unusual response, and maybe way more people are as excited by the Kris' kick ass plot as I am. So I might be overreacting and maybe you're sitting here reading this like huh??? people are mad at Kris?! everyone I've seen isn't.

But it's just like, c'mon guys, I think they've earned more than enough goodwill for us to give them the benefit of the doubt and trust that whatever they're doing, they got their heart in the right place.

idk if you were around while s1 was airing but honestly the revisionism i keep seeing about the reception of s1 by gamers is kinda funny. i see comments like “everyone loved s1, s2 is just bad” and i’m just like clearly u weren’t paying attention to the weekly discussions from tlou fans. off the top of my head they complained about: joel being too soft, joel not killing enough people, ellie being a “brat” unlike game ellie who was always “sweet”, in ep3 why is ellie randomly stabbing that infected in the head like a psycho (ironic bc now ellie isn’t violent enough for them), not enough infected, not enough action, the pacing is horrible, the relationship between joel and ellie is rushed, joel should have found ellie after killing david instead of her walking outside, *comparing game scenes to the show* bella’s performance is inferior in every way, finale was rushed, joel would never be vulnerable with ellie about his suicide attempt, ellie should be recast in s2 and she should be played by alba baptista (this is before the weird cailee spaney obsession). these are just the things i can remember. i mean generally i do think s1 was more well received but for people to rewrite history and pretend everyone LOVED s1 (and bella) and had 0 complaints about it compared to s2 is very silly.

I was around for season one and you are so real about the revisionist history. I remember tuning into the pilot because it sounded like an interesting tv show not knowing i was about to enter some of the most insufferable discourse of all time lmao.

I do like season 1 better than season 2 but the way people act like there weren’t nonstop complaints about season 1 is so funny to me. People were genuinely surprised that bella, who was literally 19 at the time, wasn’t being recast for a 5 year time jump for a character who was LITERALLY 19 YEARS OLD😭 that’s when i knew this fandom was unserious as hell. especially since their performance was so good i was like you guys seriously want someone else to take on this role??

honestly a lot of why i prefer season 1 to 2 is not because the show is now badly written (it isn’t) it’s honestly because i just like the season 1 storyline better. i’m not mad joel died, i think it’s a very compelling arc for ellie, it’s more that i liked being able to have these mini stories (bill and frank, henry and sam, ellie and riley) while also following the main narrative between ellie and joel. i felt like the stronger parts of season 2 #tome were jackson + dellie because of my own personal preferences in television.
