A satisfied boy after eating his second meal with me 💛
Accidentally dropped the rat by the hide’s entrance and he struck before I could pick it back up, so he ended up eating inside the hide 😅 But happy that he seems like such a good eater so far!

I've been holding my breath for a week and a half, but so help me, my little guy took a f/t mouse like a champ this morning (after about eight strikes and then grabbing it sideways, but he finally got it in there) and dear lord it's been a while since I've been so relieved about a pet.
And now... we wait for poop.

So I was editing photos of clearence specimens for the store, mostly animals damaged in shipping delays.
While I always specify that frozen animals be delivered overnight, unforseen delays are common.
I think the worst thing that I've ever had was about 3 years ago.
Someone had a beloved elderly ball python that they wanted to donate so I could use it for making some educational posts.
Sounds cool, so I accepted.
Well......the thing is, when the animal died, it wasn't immediately found.
It looked like it had been at least a day, so there was already some pretty significant decay.
For context, at room temperature, a medium sized snake will decompose to a point where to skeleton starts to fall apart in about 18 hours or so.
For some reason, despite my instructions for packing frozen items, the pet owner put it in a plastic envelope and then just sent it through the mail.....normally.
On top of that, it was mistakenly delivered to an address down the street that happened to be housing for senior citizens.
To make things even worse, it was not even a small animal. This was a large adult ball python, so it was the length of a baguette. (The grocery store ones, not the artisanal ones.)
So then I was trying to track down this lost package, when somebody posted to the Nextdoor app that their elderly mother had received a package that was mistakenly delivered.
I went over and got the package.
It was not only smelly but also leaky. Luckily, the old lady lived alone and seemed to have dementia, so she was a bit confused and didn't ask any questions.
I grabbed it, I apologized, I left.
By that point the snake was too rotted to be of any use.
Several weeks later the pet owner messaged me to asked me if I was able to find anything neat in her baby, and my plans for him.

AVOID BOA CONSTRICTOR . COM/JEREMY STONE REPTILES
Normally I don't post things like this but I cannot stand by and not say my piece on this. The ball python hobby has been going down the shitter for a long, long time. Not the keeping part of it, no, the big minimalist breeders who see these living, breathing creatures as nothing more than a dollar sign in a plastic tote, are absolutely ruining the hobby for us. Jeremy Stone, owner and runner of boaconstrictor(DOT)com, was throwing ball pythons high up into the air, 'juggling' them, to show potential customers how 'docile' they are. Absolutely no respect to the animals, and with how much he dropped them I would be surprised if one or two of them didn't have a broken rib. If you want to watch the video, a screen grab was taken before he dirty deleted it. It's here. (Sorry its on facebook, I havent seen it on any other platform yet) Not only is he risking these animals being majorly injured, he is showing just how little most big ball python breeders actually care about their animals. Because this is how other big box breeders are reacting:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Screenshots are not mine, but are shared with permission) NONE OF THEM SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT I am appalled and disgusted. I look at my babies, at Leliana most of all, and I could never imagine treating any of them with even the slightest bit of disrespect. These animals are so sweet, and so curious, and so special. And they're being treated like garbage. Adding on to that, now PETA and other places that exploit pet ownership for money will take this video and try to use it to end the reptile keeping hobby. Because they see this and can share it, and can make it seem like us small hobbyists, that actually love and care for our animals, are treating them like that. He is making us all look terrible. Needless to say, I am not breeding ball pythons anymore. I can't stand the thought of any of my babies going to someone like that. As much as I vet through people before they buy, I can't stop them from rehoming, and there is always a possibility that they'll end up in the hands of someone who only see them as a dollar sign. I'm not 'getting out of the hobby' as it were, they are my babies and they are here to stay. I just won't be breeding them anymore. I may breed other species in the future, but I can't stand the way the ball python hobby has turned out.

a few people have mistaken Neynari for albino (she's actually leucistic) so here's a quick doodle of her with an actually albino Na'vi!
autistic infodumping about albinism vs. leucism under the cut (lots of cool animal pictures)
Albinism is a genetic condition that prevents the production of pigment, specifically melanin...which for mammals would be all pigment since mammals only produce melanins, but some types of reptiles, birds, etc. also have other types of pigments that are unaffected by albinism, which is why you can get, for example, an albino ball python that still has bright yellow markings. That's a tangent though, and yes I know that being aliens and all Na'vi skin is colored by "cyanin" not melanin but for simplicity's sake let's assume that the Pandoran equivalent to albinism affects cyanin the same as melanin in Earthen species, and since the Na'vi are clearly a mammalian equivalent let's assume that they don't have fancy extra types of pigment.
This lack of pigment production means that albino individuals end up with white hair/fur/feathers/scales and pinkish skin (it's unpigmented but will still appear pinkish instead of pure white because there's still red blood/muscle/etc. underneath. So, no, an albino Na'vi probably would not actually look like all those AI-generated "snow Na'vi" images floating around 😅)
It can also makes the eyes appear red or pink because without pigment in the way you can see the red of the blood vessels behind them. That said, depending on the opacity of the structures inside the eyes, this won't always be the case; if they are opaque enough you won't be able to see those blood vessels and the eyes will appear a pale gray or bluish.
Speaking of eyes, it turns out that the presence of melanin is actually pretty important in ocular development, so albino individuals often have impaired vision.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Leucism, on the other hand, is an umbrella term that covers a range of conditions that cause partial lack of pigment in some way, shape, or form (as opposed to the total lack seen in albinism). Leucistic phenotypes can be quite varied depending on what's causing the pigment malfunction.
Some leucistic conditions cause a lack of pigment in hair/fur/feathers but not skin or eyes. This results in a white coat that is often mistaken for albino. The main way to distinguish this type of leucism from true albinism is to look at the eyes (and sometimes skin, like on the nose or pads). Leucistic conditions do not affect the eyes, so if the animal has a standard eye color for its species, it's leucistic, not albino. If it has red/pink or unusually pale grayish eyes along with pinkish skin, it's albino.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Another leucism condition causes uneven distribution of pigment-producing cells, giving the individual normal coloration interspersed with unpigmented splotches. This condition is also known as piebald and can produce some really stunning patterns!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Yet other leucism conditions reduce pigment production, but do not completely halt it. In other words, these individuals do produce pigments in all their integuments, just not as much as their standard-colored counterparts...so they retain most of their natural markings/patterning, but with a pale "washed-out" appearance (this is the type Neynari has!)

...so yeah, now you know :)

Can you please do Janil with a reader that have a pet snake? To be more specific a ball python, they instead of attack when they feel threatened they curl up in a ball and they are actually small besides the name python
Jamil Viper
Tumblr media
Jamil feels sorry for your snake.
Because it really can't be "normal" at a place like the NRC.
Who knows where you would store it or how you could feed your little one…
Because Crowley wouldn't really pay you enough.
Jamil would definitely help you take care of your snake.
Sometimes Jamil would bring treats for it.
He would know a surprising amount about them and would be a big help.
Your snake would like him too.
Sometimes it feels like your snake likes Jamil more than you.
However, Jamil would not take the snake to the Sacrabia dormitory.
Unfortunately, Kalim would be one big stressor for your snake.
If Grim doesn't count..
Jamil would also be interested in why you wanted a snake.
And why did you choose this one.
