27 Exam strategies from 'Cracking the GRE Premium Edition with 6 Practice Tests, 2020' which can also become life tips
As you become more familiar with the test, you will also develop a sense of âthe ETS mentality.â This is a predictable kind of thinking that influences nearly every part of nearly every ETS exam. By learning to recognize the ETS mentality, youâll earn points even when you arenât sure why an answer is correct. Youâll inevitably do better on the test by learning to think like the people who wrote it.
Youâll do better on the GRE by putting aside your feelings about real education and surrendering yourself to the strange logic of the standardized test.
You might be surprised to learn that the GRE isnât written by distinguished professors, renowned scholars, or graduate school admissions officers. For the most part, itâs written by ordinary ETS employees, sometimes with freelance help from local graduate students. You have no reason to be intimidated.
Our focus is on the basic concepts that will enable you to attack any problem, strip it down to its essential components, and solve it in as little time as possible.
In many ways, taking a standardized test is a skill and, as with any skill, you can become more proficient at it by both practicing and following the advice of a good teacher.
Think of your GRE preparation as if you were practicing for a piano recital or a track meet; you wouldnât show up at the concert hall or track field without having put in hours of practice beforehand (at least we hope you wouldnât!). If you want to get a good score on the GRE, youâll have to put in the necessary preparation time.
After all, the GRE leaves you no room to make explanations or justifications for your responses.
However, the difficulty of an individual question plays no role in determining your score; that is, your score is calculated by your performance on the entirety of the scored sections, not just a handful of the hardest questions on a given section.
This strategy is called Take the Easy Test First. Skip early and skip often.
On your first pass through the questions, if you see a question you donât like, a question that looks hard, or a question that looks time consuming, youâre going to walk on by and leave it for the end.
Sometimes, however, a question that looks easy turns out to be more troublesome than you thought. The question may be trickier than it first appeared, or you may have simply misread it, and it seems hard only because youâre working with the wrong information.
Over four hours, your brain is going to get tired.
Once you read a question wrong, however, it is almost impossible to un-read that and see it right. As long as you are still immersed in the question, you could read it 10 times in a row and you will read it the same wrong way each time.
Whether a question is harder than it first appeared, or made harder by the fact that you missed a key phrase or piece of information, the approach youâve taken is not working.
Reset your brain by walking away from the problem, but mark the question before you do. Do two or three other questions, and then return to the marked problem. When you walk away, your brain doesnât just forget the problem, it keeps on processing in the background. The distraction of the other questions helps your brain to consider the question from other angles. When you return to the problem, you may find that the part that gave you so much trouble the first time is now magically clear. If the problem continues to give you trouble, walk away again.
Staying with a problem when youâre stuck burns time but yields no points. You might spend two, three, five, or even six minutes on a problem but still be no closer to the answer.
In the five minutes you spend on a problem that youâve misread, you could nail three or four easier questions. When you return to the question that gave you trouble, there is a good chance that you will spot your error, and the path to the correct answer will become clear. If it doesnât become clear, walk away again. Any time you encounter resistance on the test, do not keep pushing; bend like a reed and walk away
You should take the easy test first and you should spend most of your time on questions that you know how to answer, or are reasonably certain you can answer.
As a result, itâs better to guess than it is to leave a question blank. At least by guessing, you stand a chance at getting lucky and guessing correctly.
In fact, sometimes it is easier to identify the wrong answers and eliminate them than it is to find the right ones,
Trap answers are specifically designed to appeal to test takers. Oftentimes, theyâre the answers that seem to scream out âpick me!â as you work through a question. However, these attractive answers are often incorrect.
Get into the habit of double-checking all of your answers before you click on your answer choice
The only way to reliably avoid careless errors is to adopt habits that make them less likely to occur.
Every time you begin a new section, focus on that section and put the last section you completed behind you. Donât think about that pesky synonym from an earlier section while a geometry question is on your screen. You canât go back, and besides, your impression of how you did on a section is probably much worse than reality.
The week before the test is not the time for any major life changes. This is NOT the week to quit smoking, start smoking, quit drinking coffee, start drinking coffee, start a relationship, end a relationship, or quit a job. Business as usual, okay?
Before you dive in, you might wish to take one of the practice tests in this book or online to get a sense of where you are starting from.
Accuracy is better than speed. Slow down and focus on accumulating as many points as possible. Forcing yourself to work faster results in careless errors and lower scores.

Memorizing vs Deep Knowledge
I had an interesting discussion with a colleague yesterday, about what and how much to memorize, especially in preparation for essay and practical tests. Both of us got bad advice as teens in school, to just memorize everything. During college and in our careers, we discovered how absurd and WRONG that advice was. LOL we each nearly got busted out of training by examiners who thought we memorized too much and didn't understand things in depth.
Memorize the things you do not have time to look up in books or online. Such things you need to know and apply promptly. For other things, you should know where to where to find the information. In my career, there are a lot of rules and machine limitations we must know dead cold. Examiners would ask a lot of "scenario" questions, where you must talk at length and juggle a lot of different concepts. They wanted rules and numbers memorized, but "how and why" to be understood.
That said, delivering a 20 minute talk or 4000 word essay requires you to deeply understand the topic. LOL I don't mean at the level of a PhD, but as a competent person who knows the field and won't get lost or try to bullshit out of a question. It is different from having things memorized. To sit or stand before an audience and show mastery requires you to cover multiple concepts, explain how they relate to one another, and apply what you know.
Study, but then practice by writing out brief essays on the smaller topics. Work out the awkward wordings or funky logic. Learn the limits of what you know and have a sense of when you are weak in some area, so you can focus you studies there. It is an iterative, "do then do again" process.

The perfect space for reading and writing

The Emergent Power of a Web of Notes with Links
Below is a fairly accurate reflection of my writing process and how my blogs start! Takes a while for them to form into a vaguely coherent structure for me to share more widely! Autism isnât linear, my thought process and way of being is monotropic, multi sensory, neuro-holographic, rhizomatic and omnidirectional. I shared this last year. Finances
This is where you put your overall finances - savings, expenses, revenue or difference
Budget
Monthly Budget helps you track all your unexpected expenses and identify the things you don't or won't really need.
Expenses
I'm not really fond of tracking my expenses because I know it'll always be too much or over the budget but I don't have a choice - I just have to track it so I won't go into debt. đ
Savings
Track your earnings and your cash flow. You can also track your savings for when you want to buy the new iPad Pro or Macbook Pro.
Shopping
Track your shopping list here so you won't have to go over the budget.
Package
Tracking happy mails? Then this is the perfect page! Although since I shifted to digital planning, I don't really have happy mails anymore - maybe happy emails or downloads?
amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit0"; amzn_assoc_search_bar = "false"; amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "kymmiejournals-20"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_title = "Recommended for Digital Planning"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "d32590cf1ecfb8dc160183928b74faf4"; amzn_assoc_asins = "B0876P8VHN,B08VMZ4RTY,B07YTHD64R,B07QYYSDMP";

Use this page to easily track your appointments and occasions for the whole month. You can also track your bills and subscriptions here so you'd know when to pay or add your project deadlines and meetings.
Monthly Overview Goals
The Monthly Overview page is right after the Monthly spread or just before the Weekly page. You can put your ideas and priorities for the whole month on this page. Remember to add a lot of visuals - photos and stickers so you won't have to fill every box in case you can't.

You can use Weekly Planner to track your meals or menu for the week. Write the ingredients or recipe in the bigger boxes. The top 3 boxes can be used for your top 3 priorities this week.
Daily
The Daily page contains a calendar that is clickable to Weekly and Daily. You can use color blocks to track your schedule. Add stickers or photos for your Mood and Activity.

Intentions
Weekly Intentions page serves as a guided-journal page where you can put which habits that make you feel good, what you like to see manifest this week, what limits you the most right now and how you can change it, write your mantra, describe the person you want to be this week and positive affirmation.
Gratitude
This is super helpful for your personal growth. You have to be appreciative even with the little things - like how your food has been properly prepared by chefs or crew in fast food, how people you don't normally notice makes your life easier and so much more.
2021 Goals
Track your most important goals monthly and add the things that hinder you to accomplish it so it'll be easier for you to focus on each goal. For example, you have 3 goals but you are having difficulties finishing them because of a low budget or maybe time constraint - these are what you call roadblocks that prevent you from achieving your top goals. Identifying your roadblocks will help you focus more on what needs to be done.
Vision Board
Add a lot of photos here. Your vision board should look engaging and encouraging!
Reflection
Reflect on the things that made you happy or cry for this week and use that to improve yourself and be prepared for the next week.

There are people â some in my own Party â who think that if you just give Donald Trump everything he wants, heâll make an exception and spare you some of the harm. Iâll ignore the moral abdication of that position for just a second to say â almost none of those people have the experience with this President that I do. I once swallowed my pride to offer him what he values most â public praise on the Sunday news shows â in return for ventilators and N95 masks during the worst of the pandemic. We made a deal. And it turns out his promises were as broken as the BIPAP machines he sent us instead of ventilators. Going along to get along does not work â just ask the Trump-fearing red state Governors who are dealing with the same cuts that we are. I wonât be fooled twice.
Iâve been reflecting, these past four weeks, on two important parts of my life: my work helping to build the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the two times Iâve had the privilege of reciting the oath of office for Illinois Governor.
As some of you know, Skokie, Illinois once had one of the largest populations of Holocaust survivors anywhere in the world. In 1978, Nazis decided they wanted to march there.
The leaders of that march knew that the images of Swastika clad young men goose stepping down a peaceful suburban street would terrorize the local Jewish population â so many of whom had never recovered from their time in German concentration camps.
The prospect of that march sparked a legal fight that went all the way to the Supreme Court. It was a Jewish lawyer from the ACLU who argued the case for the Nazis â contending that even the most hateful of speech was protected under the first amendment.
As an American and a Jew, I find it difficult to resolve my feelings around that Supreme Court case â but I am grateful that the prospect of Nazis marching in their streets spurred the survivors and other Skokie residents to act. They joined together to form the Holocaust Memorial Foundation and built the first Illinois Holocaust Museum in a storefront in 1981 â a small but important forerunner to the one I helped build thirty years later.
I do not invoke the specter of Nazis lightly. But I know the history intimately â and have spent more time than probably anyone in this room with people who survived the Holocaust. Hereâs what Iâve learned â the root that tears apart your houseâs foundation begins as a seed â a seed of distrust and hate and blame.
The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe a lifetime ago didnât arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.
Iâm watching with a foreboding dread what is happening in our country right now. A president who watches a plane go down in the Potomac â and suggests â without facts or findings â that a diversity hire is responsible for the crash. Or the Missouri Attorney General who just sued Starbucks â arguing that consumers pay higher prices for their coffee because the baristas are too âfemaleâ and ânonwhite.â The authoritarian playbook is laid bare here: They point to a group of people who donât look like you and tell you to blame them for your problems.
I just have one question: What comes next? After weâve discriminated against, deported or disparaged all the immigrants and the gay and lesbian and transgender people, the developmentally disabled, the women and the minorities â once weâve ostracized our neighbors and betrayed our friends â After that, when the problems we started with are still there staring us in the face â what comes next.
All the atrocities of human history lurk in the answer to that question. And if we donât want to repeat history â then for Godâs sake in this moment we better be strong enough to learn from it.
I swore the following oath on Abraham Lincolnâs Bible: âI do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of the United States, and the constitution of the state of Illinois, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Governor .... according to the best of my ability.
My oath is to the Constitution of our state and of our country. We donât have kings in America â and I donât intend to bend the knee to one. I am not speaking up in service to my ambitions â but in deference to my obligations.
If you think Iâm overreacting and sounding the alarm too soon, consider this:
It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic. All Iâm saying is when the five-alarm fire starts to burn, every good person better be ready to man a post with a bucket of water if you want to stop it from raging out of control.
Those Illinois Nazis did end up holding their march in 1978 â just not in Skokie. After all the blowback from the case, they decided to march in Chicago instead. Only twenty of them showed up. But 2000 people came to counter protest. The Chicago Tribune reported that day that the ârally sputtered to an unspectacular end after ten minutes.â It was Illinoisans who smothered those embers before they could burn into a flame.
Tyranny requires your fear and your silence and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage. So gather your justice and humanity, Illinois, and do not let the âtragic spirit of despairâ overcome us when our country needs us the most.

"tiktok has massive problems that even if you don't agree with a complete ban have to be addressed for all social media platforms" and "the Chinese government is doing pretty awful things" and "there is a lot of sinophobic fearmongering and double standards in the conversation about tiktok" and "people should exercise basic caution signing up to foreign or domestic social media" and "most Chinese citizens like US citizens are just people living their life and cultural exchange between them can be beneficial for both sides" and "some people being on the same social media site isn't going to solve everything " and "I want to study the linguistics happening there under a microscope" are opinions that can coexist

the thing about the mummy movies is that you really spend most of the time thinking "wow brendan fraser's character is so cool" or "man oded fehr is so mysterious and heroic" when the fact of the matter is that these two
are the absolute most batshit insane heroes in the entire franchise
these two are intellectual loner siblings with archeology backgrounds who read and speak ancient egyptian, hire a dude directly out of prison to take them to a lost city of gold, and fight mummies literally with their bare hands. twice.
no one in these movies stands a chance against the carnahans. frankly they're lethal in how willing they are to make the absolute and most undeniably deranged decisions. jonathan pickpockets a dude on fire. evy's resurrected from the dead and immediately remembers how to use sai. they're racking shotguns from a cliff in this scene and then proceed to blow away half the antagonists.
rick and ardeth should be so lucky
#the mummy#literally they're the best and i'll hear nothing against jonathan being as cool as evy tbh#the third movie doesn't exist. also.#i haven't seen it since it came out and i have no plans to#1k#baffling amount of notes but iâll take it i guess#10k#.doc

Headcannon that Jason got the headstone from his grave and put it above his bed because it says 'Here lies Jason Todd' (he broke off the good soldier bit ofc) and thinks it's the funniest thing ever, some of the family, of course, are horrified.
Dick, at Jason's before they go out on patrol: Hey Jaybird, make sure to bring a spare respir--WHAT THE HELL?!?
Dick, looking frantically between Jason and the headstone: this is clearly a threat. Somebody knows your identity. I swear to GOD when I find who did this--
Jason, looking up from his phone comepletely unbothered: oh yeah, about that
--------
Bonus:
--------
Tim, climbing through Jasons bedroom window: Hey, its me, dont shoot. Do you have a first aid kit here right?
Jason, getting up from where he was reading in bed: ugh yeah sure, one sec
Jason, proceeds to grab a sticky note saying 'DOES NOT' and jabs it onto the headstone so it reads 'Here DOES NOT lie Jason Todd':
Tim:
Tim: okay that's funny
