Anime Fest Plus 2024 Convention Experience Log - With Photos!

Hi, hello! As I've recently (as of this post, yesterday morning) attended Anime Fest+ 2024 at Tropicana Gardens Mall, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, I've decided to write an experience log about my day there! While I will be posting a few different cosplays here, since my blog is currently primarily about MDZS, TGCF and SVSSS at the moment, most of the cosplays I'll be sharing will be from these three titles. To add to the fun, I'll also have commentaries on them!

To preface, the largest anime convention in Malaysia is Comic Fiesta, an annual mecca with 70,000 attendees as of the year 2023. Anime, games and comics are popular in this country, so there are smaller cons dotted throughout the months.

Anyway, the crowd wasn't as large as Comic Fiesta. As the structure of Tropicana Gardens Mall is rather narrow, you'd technically have to file through in two to three lines to be able to walk in and out of the place.

The exhibition hall at the fourth floor hosted all performances as well as cosplay booths. You'd have to ride one of the two escalators up to the hall - plebs without a ticket are doomed to be stranded at the bottom of said escalators, unable to sop up the merriment held exclusively above.

Here are some pics though, just in case you were a pleb that day, or just didn't attend the event:

Main hall programs and booths featured mostly Hololive and sexy pretty girl cosplayers and figurines, given the regular, expected fare when it comes to the anime consuming demographic (yes, I'm calling you out, my anime-watching brothers). I didn't take pictures of the doujinshi market out of respect for the art sellers there, but I did buy a beautiful print and got some lovely free stickers from that ONE vendor who sold BL stuff among the throngs of moe girls/Genshin Impact.

Yes, there was only one stall. But that one vendor made my day! Bless your heart, sister!

Now, I'll move on to the highlight - the cosplays. Nothing fills my heart with more joy than seeing happy people wearing colorful costumes and having a blast just being part of the convention scene. To be honest, it's so common to be wearing cosplay outfits nowadays that folk don't even notice you when you're dressed up - and I say this from experience; nobody noticed at all that I was in costume (or they were far too polite to laugh at how shitty I looked LOL, I didn't even dare take pics of myself). These events usually become scavenger hunts for me, to identify the ones from series I know or my tribe (fellow MXTX fans aha!).

First up is an oldie that's a goldie - Mr. Spock from Star Trek (credit: FaceBook user Yasuhiro Orihusay):

Honestly, I did NOT expect to find any Star Trek cosplays there. My dad's a Trekkie, so this was one of the first pics I sent him at the con itself. Live long and prosper, Mr. Spock!

Next, a furry OC:

I wasn't able to get their social media account as they were waiting in line for an autograph by a cosplayer, so unfortunately I'm unable to credit here.

Furries are currently still a new thing in Malaysia - but I'm glad to see them appearing more frequently at our cons, since they do diversify our pop culture scene quite a bit. Furs Upon Malaysia (FURUM) is held annually in Kuala Lumpur. The tickets are always sold out within an hour, so it's definitely growing and also contributing to tourism (Indonesian and Singaporean furries gather there too).

Also, they're fluffy. I love fluffy things. Much thanks, furry fandom, for being fluffy!

Moving on, here's a group cosplay of Jojo's Bizzare Adventure's Six Pistols (Mista from Golden Wind's Stands, if you're wondering which season it's from):

Vibrant and very spot on! I was unable to get their social media account due to the crowd and disorientation on my part. Do try to look them up, though! They were pretty popular, so I'm sure someone would have shared some info if you're interested.

Final Fantasy's one of the older franchises, but it's definitely rising again due to the new FFVII remake. I thought he was Garnet until I saw the blond wig. Bless the mages, healing power plus!!

Next in line is one of my all-time favorites, Sailor Moon (credit: https://www.instagram.com/jiahuab0719_cos/):

I'm a Moonie so seeing a Sailor Moon made me pretty excited! I don't see too many Sailor Moon cosplays even in Comic Fiesta - cosplays at our conventions are pretty seasonal and tend to follow trends, from what I've seen. She definitely caught quite a bit of attention with her wings, too. I saw her getting stopped quite a bit, so I'm glad I got a pic before a line formed!

Aaaand! I've saved the best for last! I'll be showcasing the MXTX stuff now. To start off (with a bang), here are two cosplayers of the number one seasonal love interest of the BL world, Hua Cheng a.k.a. San Lang Didi (Grown Up Version):

Remember how I said cosplays at Malaysian conventions tend to be pretty seasonal? Well, the current flavor of the month for the BL world is definitely TGCF - and the hottest flavor is now San Lang didi. You're going to get stopped for photos pretty often for dressing up as this flashy guy, and for good reason too. Donned in striking red, Hua Cheng is the Ferrari of the danmei world.

Next, we have the ever beautiful WangXian couple cosplays:

WangXian's a staple when it comes to the MXTX fandom. There's nary a person who doesn't love these two soulmates, and with these elaborate costumes, they've certainly stolen the show! They were the first couple I saw at the entrance of the exhibition hall, which makes sense since there was an OTP contest going on that afternoon.

Moving along, we have the main character of his story, the Crown Prince of Xian Le, Xie Lian (credit: https://www.instagram.com/arkutagwa/):

I gotta admit that this Lian's the sweetest of the Xies so far. Had a field day calling each other cute (what can I say, we both had cute personalities)! Gotta love that charming dimpled cheek, bless!

I won't lie - I didn't recognize the character at first. But with the dark-gray-to-white ombre, black and red colors to tell you that's a Wei Wuxian, I'm just going to take a gamble here and deduce that yes, that is indeed a Wei Wuxian and include it. Let me know if you don't think it is.

Last but not least, we have our MXTX OTP group:

Turns out they're a group who'd entered the OTP contest that afternoon. If you're wondering, no, Binghe isn't paired with air (this is Bing-mei, not Bing-ge). There was a large number of attendees that day as it was Sunday, so their Shizun was still looking for parking. I'd gotten lucky since I'd arrived there just as they'd opened up Basement 3 so ZOOM I parked near the escalators with plenty of space to spare. Until today I chalk it up to being last-minute dressed as Xie Lian, the god of good luck for hobos like myself (or, according to popular belief, Hua Cheng's blessed every Xie Lian cosplayer out there no matter how much we look like we've just stepped out of a jungle). I also had plenty of space to sit for a lovely lunch of salad and green tea!

Granted, there were actually a few other Xie Lians there as well (he's the current flavor as well), but I didn't want to chase after them from afar since the flow of human traffic in this particular mall wasn't too conducive for trying to get pictures, unlike KLCC's garden. Usually, more fans are dressed as the two main characters, Wei Wuxian and Xie Lian - or the shous/bottoms in popular danmei. Surprisingly, I actually saw quite a number of gongs/tops this trip round.

NEW OCS NEW OCS NEW OCS

For the past months or so I've been working on some characters for a new story and worldbuilding project! Say hi to the Feltlings! Who are sentient stuffies and puppets that walk, talk, and get jobs like you!

I'll give a more detailed post on them eventually, but the characters shown and their basic descriptions are:

Barry Norman: A hardworking man in his 40s that was once a child star for a puppet show from the 80s, he now lives a mostly quiet and normal life as a office worker. He likes to grow plants, cook, and is just a regular (albeit very overworked and constantly stressed) guy!

Divi Devil: A feltling built in the shape of a demon. Divi was a ex convict that's been involved in a lot of criminal activity, but has now turned her life around and works as a mechanic. She loves metal music, horror films, and is your big sister now.

Candy the Ant: A young teen ant that was originally part of a brand of ant mascots for children. These ants were a tight knit community, but very conformist and Candy doesn't want to be seen as marketable and like anyone else, she wants to be herself! She is highly into alt fashions, art, and only wants to have friends that understand her.

Artie the Aardvark: A handsewn Aardvark plush who was initially made by a kindly old Ghanan lady's grandson as a present, but turned out to be a Feltling. They're a grumpy old Feltling and prefer to keep to themselves, but they care for their family and take their job as a babysitter and therapy toy seriously.

Ashti Baran: The human of the group. Ashti is a young Kurdish transfemme with a talent for textiling and tailoring and has dreams of being a fashion designer. However, Ashti deals with a lot of anxiety and finds most people scary to deal with, but has found most friendships in Feltlings who are less scary to her. She's had to deal with a lot but when she's at her most comfortable, she's just a ordinary girl who'd gladly talk to you about fabrics.

I think a lot of people are reasonably upset, but are taking a somewhat harmful approach to making things better.

It's difficult to see a show with such openly queer characters and not your own demographic (poc, disabled, women). They think that they should have a place there too, which they should! But you have to consider situations in part of a bigger picture of where we're at as a society.

Right now, the queer community has a lot of attention, and it's easier for pretty much all people to take a walk in their shoes. "I'm a man who loves women, you're a woman who loves women. Well, the only thing that's different is who exactly you love, but you still love, so I don't have a hard time imagining your circumstances."

And while poc have been crying out for attention for years now, most notably in 2020 with the BLM movement, it's much harder for a white man to imagine the experience of a black woman. And considering that if you do it wrong you're canceled, it's easy to see why people shy away from it. People say, "Oh, it's just a person! Act normal!", and yes that is true, but the white man may still accidentally perpetrate a stereotype. And then he's yelled at for not doing research first. It's a cycle that people can get stuck in.

As for physically disabled people, depictions of them are so stigmatized in media at this point that it's hard to know right from wrong. There are going to be mistakes made. That doesn't make it totally okay, but progress is a process. Disabled people have been silenced for a very long time, and they deserve a hell of a lot better. But if we just tell the Council to include them, how are the Council to know exactly what that looks like? We need to give them ideas, we have to guide them.

And as for women, yeah, there's definitely a lot to be desired. Frankly, they're a bunch of white guys; it's bound to happen. What we can do is clamor for more women who aren't only milfs. Yes, we love them, but regular, strong ladies like Jay are needed all throughout the campaigns. Give Jay some love. She's amazing. Condi does great with her.

The JRWI community has the unique position of being able to actually influence the creators. While Disney artists and writers are hidden away behind a big corporation and continue to pump out the same white, straight, cisgendered characters, we have one on one contact with the Council.

Tell me: if you went up to a Disney executive and screamed at them to include a black ambiguously bisexual or lesbian woman in one of their movies, do you think that would help the issue? No, they wouldn't care. They'd just say you're trying to brainwash their children again.

Meanwhile, the Council are a small group of four white, mostly cisgendered and straight men. And yet, they've included gay, lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary, unlabeled, asexual, transgender, and black people! That's awesome! We should be celebrating the fact that this podcast even exists! It's incredible.

Don't scream at them. That's counter-productive. Have civil conversations, encourage them to do more, show them what representation should look like while giving them room to be creative with it. Tell them what they do wrong and then point them kindly in the right direction.

I don't want this community to kill the podcast. I don't want all of this negativity to force Grizzly to leave - and I think it could get to that point if things continue the way they do.

Art is the best way to influence the Council. Draw the pcs with mobility aids! Give the poc characters love and attention, expand on hcs. Make ocs that showcase aspects of these lesser-represented communities. There are so many things you can do.

I just realized that I haven't talked about her much on my blog. Time to fix that.

Bear in mind that she kinda evolved from "splatsona" to "OC who shares a lot of things with me (but not everything!) and still represents me sometimes but is mostly her own character now"

❥ Mélusine (full name Mélusine Larchipel) is 20 years old and goes by she/her. Her height is 166 cm, aka 5'5. She's autistic and pansexual.

❥ She's all academics, no street smarts. She's rather shy, overly polite, and has trouble voicing her opinions (as well as socializing in general). Her enthusiasm and eccentricities regularly slip through the cracks of her demure appearance.

❥ Melly moved to Inkadia around 10 years ago (making her multilingual as a result), but she still hasn't gotten used to everything because she would mostly spend her time inside without interacting much with other people. She's only recently started to open up, and she uses ink sports and tableturf as a way to do so.

❥ Her mom is a surface Octoling, but her dad is a Cirraling (which is my fan species of cirrate octopuses). That makes her half-grimpoteuthis! The reason why it matters is that the top design isn't her true appearance. The bottom one is what she looks like all-natural.

❥ Due to the biological differences of cirrate octopuses, her chromatophores and her ink sac are a bit underdeveloped. It takes roughly 15 minutes of light exposure for her chromatophores to be able to change colour and roughly 30 minutes in darkness for her to revert back to her natural colour.

❥ She's a bit insecure about her differences, so that's why she disguises herself as a regular Octoling. In fact, her hairstyle is meant to make her ears look smaller since she would get teased for them as a kid.

❥ This character is pretty much a metaphor for masking, when you think about it

❥ Now! Being part-dumbo has its perks, such as better night vision, but it also has its downsides. Remember when I said that her ink sac was underdeveloped? Because of that, she has to focus almost all of her gear abilities into ink saving.

❥ And that combined with her being unable to play anything other than brushes means that Melly REALLY sucks at Salmon Run. She sucks so much that her teammates kept complaining, and she ended up getting kicked out of Grizz Co. She doesn't mind it too much, though, because she's happy earning money with turf war and sewing. Not to mention that the whole business looks really shady anyway.

❥ Going back to brush weapons! Melly has a weird obsession with them. She owns all of the available ones on the market and will only listen to Sheldon's rambles if they're about brush weapons (if they aren't, she will immediately zone out)

❥ She's named Mélusine after the fairy from the eponymous myth. Mélusine is a spirit of fresh water who was cursed to become a serpent from the waist down every Saturday. So! Not only does it have a water theme, but it reflects her appearance-changing deal. She likes her full name, and her family uses it on a regular basis. The reason why she mostly goes by "Melly" is because it's easier for her friends to pronounce.

❥ Her favourite band is Chirpy Chips, and her favourite song from them is Shellfie. She's also a big fan of Raian (guess where that came from) and has a celebrity crush on them.

❥ Her favourite show and videogame are called "Magical Mumi Uni-chan" and "Coral Village 2" respectively.

❥ She loves blueberry pies and hates walnuts for their dry aftertaste (macadamia nuts are more up her alley)

❥ She developed emetophobia as a kid after a severe bout of salmonella.

❥ She really likes flowers as well as lolita fashion and does sewing as a hobby.

❥ While not visible in this drawing, she has some webbing between her fingers (which are tainted purple)

❥ Her shoes are punk whites with ruffle socks.

❥ And last but not least: Melly is based on this specific octopus! She's also very interested in the deep sea and likes to search for books about it.

Random Facts & 'Party Tricks' Of Choc Kinsley

Hopefully you aren't getting too tired of the mostly Choc content here. But sorry if you are. He's my favorite Oc besides Honey of course. 

I just realized it would be his birthday today, April 1st (how comedic) and so he would be 59yo in 2015 if playing off ear on the games wonky timeline, during ItA and in 2024, 68yo. What an old man he is. lol. Only wanted to share that with you all if anyone was interested.

Choc is double jointed, abnormally flexible then a regular human should be. Has hypermobility. As he gets up there in age, it's a little more difficult and he does deal with frequent bodily pains.

Deals with daily chronic pains, usually mild to a point he can ignore it but to the trained eye of some it's noticeable with his sporadic mannerisms 

^ Though when it's bad he's shaking uncontrollably, nearly bedridden and or left unable to function/control his own body 

Weak sensation of the hands, attune to tingly static (like they're asleep) so it ends up more often than he likes to admit with him accidentally dropping stuff he was holding. 

^ Same with his legs, there've been plenty of incidents, too many to count where they had randomly given out beneath him and he's left in a heap of long, bony limbs that can't move

^ Genuinely a very bony man, you can easily see them which he knows aren't healthy but laughed it off. Can hear him from a whole distance due to the loud crackling of his bones. 

In his youth (even now) He's the life of the party. Knows how to have a good time and keep the mood positive. Whenever someone is around him, it's sure to help boost their own. 

^ A recovering party animal with a high tolerance who used to drink and take drugs in unnatural excess. 

His weirdest and creepy ‘party trick’ is where he's able to twist his head near full circle like an owl and keep it like that for a couple minutes straight. He can do it without hands too. 

^ Can do the same with his back, turn right around-the-clock and bend over like a crab. Able to fold himself in tight to odd places and it's useful when 

^ Another weird trick, not natural at all and gross, but post incident relating to his mouth. As it was broken, it hadn't healed properly so he could open up wide, just enough he could try to put his whole fist in and touch his tonsils.

^ His tongue can touch not only his nose but also his eyeballs due to how long, slender it can be. As well, can do all sorts of weird tongue twisters.

Whenever seemingly excited, happy or any other similar emotion, Choc flaps his hands while bouncing on the balls of his feet, unable to contain the movement. 

Is always on his feet, is everywhere doing anything to help from early in the morning to late in the night, you will never see this man go on many breaks or at all. People do worry about him pushing himself far too much but somehow he's a ball of energy. 

^ Literally an expansive book of knowledge. Whenever someone needs to know something, it's best to go to him

Am I the... bad guy (sorry I don't like saying bad words) for wanting to improve the camp I work at?

Hello! This has been bugging me for a bit. So, I (22, M) work at this camp, right? It's a summer job, since, y'know, the camp is only open for visits at summer. It's called "Mt. Bore", and, well, it's advertised as such! A boring, uneventful place, and... I kinda don't like that?

The place is beautiful! The air is fresh, the plants are nice, the birds singing are really good to hear! So it's a shame that it's advertised as such a bad place to be. The ticket prices don't help either! They're not expensive, just slightly above average, for some reason. And to top it off, we don't even have access to all of the place! The camp's terrain is huge, there's even a mount nearby, which I bet would be an awesome place to take the campers to! But we just have a small portion of the park we're allowed to be in, for some reason, and the rest is blocked off by fences.

And, since I mentioned the campers, this is a good moment to talk a bit about them. So, this summer we have 6 campers, which is way more than usual. There's this one kid (We'll call him E) who's a regular. Really fun kid, very smart too, though he mostly stays at his cabin. Usually he's our only camper, but this year a local school bought some tickets to give away to some students, so in total we have 6 campers this year.

Thing is, half of them seem very disinterested. There's this one girl who's been having some pretty dire anxiety attacks every now and then, there's this other boy who's gloomy and reclused, and even E is acting a bit... different these past few days.

The other half of the campers seem pretty happy though. We were talking the other day and they asked me if we could go on a hike around the camp, and seemed a bit bummed when I told them we weren't allowed past the fences, but I promised I'd talk to my boss about it.

And talk to him I did! He's a pretty successful businessman, inherited his dad's company and managed to make it even more successful, and is also the owner of the camp, though I guess he doesn't like people knowing that, for some reason? He specifically made me sign a contract that prohibited me from sharing his connection to the park with anyone, and even told me that I can only connect him through his phone so we wouldn't be seen together. Weird, but I suppose this is just a privacy boundary or something...

So anyway, I asked him if we could go past the fences and take a walk around the forest or go to the mount nearby, but he just said no. I tried to insist, saying the place was very beautiful, that we could do a lot of things with it and he still said no. I tried to appeal to his businessman side and said that we could make a lot of money off of the camp if we managed to attract a lot of new campers, y'know? Expand the areas we can go, build more cabins, rebrand it to "Mt. Fun" or something and just make it into an actual nice thing, y'know?

He... He REALLY disliked that. He started yelling at me through the call, and threatened to fire me if I took those teens anywhere out of bounds or even if I so much as brought this up again.

I... I don't really get it. I just wanna make this place nicer! I like working here, it's such a calm place, and I think more people deserve to experience it! I don't know if my boss has some sort of grip or attachment with the place, but he looks like he wants as little attention on it as possible!

I'm kind of worried I might've been in the wrong here, I don't know, maybe I said something that put him in a bad mood, maybe I touched a senstivve subject for him?? I really just wanna help people around me be happy, and I'm worried I might've came across as invasive when talking to my boss. Even if he's grumpy and rude, I didn't want to upset him... So, was I the bad guy here?

Furbies, the fucked up little bird dudes, are native to Coruscant. They dwell mostly in the lower levels, feeding on mosses and rodents. There are separate species, like long Furby. There is a specific subspecies of generic Furby that was created via Sith spell, and the Sith Furby subspecies are the only ones that do the 'gremlin if fed after midnight thing.'

They're also the only ones actually damaged by sunlight, but none of the family (genus? Whatever) like sunlight, hence dwelling in the lower levels.

Members of the Coruscant Guard, being highly trained soldiers, get sent into the way deep lower levels far more often than the regular cops. They develop a specialist department for those who go way deep, to the areas where there isn't much sapient life, but there are lots of weird and wild creatures, and what sapient life is there is usually very criminal.

Most of the guys that go way deep are trained to a specialist level for animal handling and wilderness response (despite Coruscant not having a wilderness to speak of).

A couple of them have gained names based on their ability to survive the deep down and come back up.

Now, the thing about Furbies is that they are actually (at least here) pretty skilled ambush predators. Food is rare that deep, so they have to be very good about actually catching the meat portion of their diets. They rarely attack humans, but if you get a large swarm of the things, or have the misfortune to come across one of the Sith subspecies, they may still attack.

They are also unfortunately good at mimicking the sounds of a human child, so. There's that.

Good at drawing human prey into traps, when they're desperate.

So one of the Guard has made a name for himself based around regularly and successfully managing to survive running into these things. Since reporting would get weird and confusing if he was exactly the same as the creature, though, he decided on a spelling mod. The creatures are Furby (s.) or Furbies (pl.), so he's Furbie.

For some reason I think his main hobby is carving small pieces of wood (whittling). Also he is usually doing the 'balance on two chair legs' thing, legs up on the desk, when he's in HQ.

He's a VERY chill dude! But sometimes his smiles are a bit. Much. I imagine he's got claw marks down and across one of his cheeks.

Hair is undercut, but the top is still relatively short. Spiked, just barely bleached (not frosted, but like… chestnut highlights).

I've been trying to learn how to draw wheelchairs for a while now, hardest part has been finding refs with people in em, do you know what terms to search up to find stuff like that? All good if not, just know you're pretty well acquainted with drawing em so figured I'd ask

First off I'm going to state that I'm not a wheelchair user. I have researched them in the past and have asked a family member who uses one for advice, but still don't take my word as absoultely reliable. The majority of my knowlege/observations comes from watching family members with chairs so it may be biased. I'm going to be mostly talking about manual chairs but the same suggestions should apply to powered.

Searching up "wheelchair drawing reference" can help, but I discourage using google images. Often the images will be unrealistic due to them being stock images, or of the wrong type of wheelchair for what youre drawing. (One that comes up a lot are foldable wheelchairs which are more associated with hospitals than practical life).

Instead, try to use reference collections made by wheelchair users. This is a really good collection by Criptid Cosplayer in both manual and powered wheelchairs. They also have a small guide to designing fantasy wheelchairs which was interesting.

I also reccomend learning what the different parts of a wheelchair are and do. This will make it easier to understand how the user uses the chair, the shape of the chair and make it easier to remember the different parts while drawing. I don't have a specific source for this using photo reference since I looked at real wheelchairs for this. However @/calvin-arium has a good guide to drawing chracters with wheelchairs with drawn diagrams here.

Also ensure you observe how real people use wheelchairs. I find that tutorials for using wheelchairs are a good source for this since they break down how each movement works. This will make it easier to draw Wheelchairs in montion/natural posing. Wheels2walking has a good video explaining rolling and one here for wheelies.

Other tips:

Give your characters wheelchair gloves, especially if they're going to be going longer distances than just being inside. Not all users use gloves but they do help protect the hands.

Consider if the character needs additional support/what type of chair they're needing. E.G. Seatbelts, cushions, cupholders, additional storage space, hight of handles/if they have handles, back height ect.

Check what type of wheelchair your character needs. One of my OC's needed to always hold a megaphone as her main weapon, so I gave her a powered wheelchair with a headrest to ensure that I could still have her move around the battlefield without taking away her disability. Other times you will need to consider the type of chair around their disability rather than design/character function. Make sure you research the type of chair for the disability and adjust if needed.

Wheelchairs have different functions. Sports wheelchairs and off-road wheelchairs look very different to regular wheelchairs so keep that in mind. Always research the right wheelchair

Also consider if your character can move their legs or not while posing.

To draw the wheelchair start with a circle with the figure to get an idea of the pose. Treat the chair as an extension of the character while drawing. Don't worry about the anatomical accuracy of the chair before you have a good idea of the pose/a basic sketch or thumbnail

Remember to draw the wheelchair using perspective. or dont.

Wheelchairs are even cooler decorated. Some people use stickers, covers, lights, fabrics, spikes.

It's okay to draw wheelchairs badly. I see a lot of people avoid drawing them for fear of getting them wrong but thats just. counterintuative. Make sure you research (even further than this post links to) and stop avoiding them.

Okay yeah, thats all I can think of for now. Keep in mind that I'm not disabled and so not everything I say is guarenteed to be accurate. But this should be enough to help you out I think.

WIP: The OCs of "Out of the Chrysalis"

So the fic I'm currently doing for HLAW...is a "Hana tries speed dating courtesy of Maxwell" fic in my P&Tverse haha, because I didn't want to have her plunging into her One Big Romance before getting the space to figure out who she is, sexuality wise, and finding a community of sorts.

One hc I always had was that Maxwell figured out Hana was interested in women by the time they became friends, and basically wanted her to have the experience of dating. He's a guy who winds up remaining friends with his exes, so he definitely talks to them and the people Hana secretly dates (because she's part of Madeleine's court and expected to catch a suitor the regular way) during the Applewood-Italy-Paris leg of the tour are either people he has dated before, or friends of people he has dated and is still friends with. Or just friends. Basically, people he trusts.

Along with being bi I hc her as demisexual, so this fic is about her discovering that too. So five of these people she dates, and two of them she basically has very illuminating conversations with.

so i've asked briefcasejuice about this already but i'd also like your take too - since you're part of the daredevil tumblr fandom council and all ...

I'm writing this scene and one of my ocs asks matt if he can handle spicy food and i wanted him to explain this whole thing about pain receptors in his mouth being "sensitive"... and how he hated pineapple because of the bromelain...(the substance that breaks up the protein in your mouth, that's why it's tingly)

and then my oc asks about like regular "body" pain since touch is after all one of the senses of his that have been heightened, and he explains something along the lines of even if the feeling of pain is heightened -- his body isn't actually weaker or more sensitive - so while he gets injured like anyone else he feels the pain of those injuries differently (more). over time he has gotten used to it but its still something he's working on as he hurts himself worse with every fight.

WHAT I'M GETTING AT is that i came to @briefcasejuice about this because they're very knowledgeable about matt stuff and comic matt especially, and they told me it did sound pretty accurate - so now i guess i just want to know -

how do you interpret or view matt's sensibility when it comes to pain - and if it came up in TRT (which maybe it did and i forgot oops?) how would you write it out?

Ok first of I love the idea of a Daredevil tumblr fandom council, because now I've got the image of all of us gathered solemnly to talk about DD fandom topics and headcanons like

Second off, ooooh this is a good question. I can't remember if I've ever gotten deep into it in TRT, although it'll probably come up eventually. But I absolutely agree with @briefcasejuice, and with your take on it. This seems right, for a couple reasons, including my own experience with pain.

So a lot of this is based on my own issues (and one of the reasons I relate really strongly to Matt's sense of touch, touch starvation, and pain, and when writing generally include him being comforted and going near comatose beneath gentle touch). Without getting too specific, due to chronic pain and health problems, I experience something called allodynia - "pain due to a stimulus that does not normally provoke pain." Basically, my nerves are all spun up to 11 and even light sensation often reads as pain, regardless of whether I'm actually hurt - Matt's comment about 'cotton feels like sandpaper on my skin'? I get that, cause rough fabric's painful to me (another ex: put icy hot on my skin once, just about clawed it off my arm because I was convinced something had gone wrong and it was burning me). And on bad days, even very soft fabrics or, hell, a breeze, any sensation anywhere I have nerves feel like bits of glass grinding into a burn. Best explanation I have for a really bad day. And we know Matt's sense of touch is heightened. So I often think he feels a lot like me, and how you described it feels right.

Everything hurts more, even if you're not being hurt more, and even if your body's strong enough physically to take whatever's being done. Physically, there's no reason his body can't handle cotton sheets, or a food with acid, and God knows the man can take a punch. Functionally, his body is fine. But his nerves don't act that way. They send way more signals than they need to, and sure, this helps if he's trying to use them to his own advantage, but it also means he's left wide open to a far higher degree of pain from stimuli that most of us would consider more minor (pineapple, in this case) along with the pain we all regularly avoid.

Does he mostly block it out? Yes. Especially on a day to day, to the point where he may actually miss smaller injuries because he's focused on tuning out other, larger pains. I know I do - your brain eventually just goes 'oh new baseline and I still need to live so Imma put everything below it into the background so it doesn't stop us doing what we need to'. I hug people, I touch things that are rough, I use hot water with the dishes, and if I focus on it, I remember that it hurts a bit, but I've learned to tune that out for the most part. Much like me, Matt's dealt with this for years, so while he does what he can (soft sheets, avoiding certain foods, wearing certain types of clothes), he's gotten used to a lot of the day to day stuff he can't avoid, though like you said, as the injuries pile up, it just gets worse and worse as that pain stacks. Some of it might be tempered by surges of adrenaline and endorphins (why I theorize he can fight even when injured - tune it out thanks to all the practice, PLUS fighting so ferociously that his body pumps him up until he can ignore it, at least until he crashes afterwards, and crashes hard), but he's definitely feeling it far, far worse.

So I basically think it's likely, especially when pain is stacking, that he's just made a bunch of calculations for his everyday life on what's worth the pain and what isn't - certain foods? No point. Cotton sheets? No point. There is no benefit, and so he comfortably avoids it, whereas going out to fight he generally always sees as worth it since there's a tangible benefit. Those calculations at least are something we all do every day - we decide the pain of a tattoo or working out or that sour candy is worth it cause it gives us something we like. Matt just takes it up to 11. I can absolutely see him taking something like, say, pineapple - tingly and acidic - and not only feeling pain when eating it but also just literally running the mental math and going, 'yeah not worth it' because he's in enough pain day to day thanks to injuries and other things he can't avoid.

In summary: you're right and I headcanon Matt operates much like someone who's been dealing with allodynia for a while, which means he'd feel more pain from stimuli even if it's not hurting him, so he chooses things in his day-to-day to avoid and then just throws himself into the pain on big things and hopes the endorphins and adrenaline will help him tune it out.

i have returned to expand upon the leech sibling dating idia post

i'm still impartial about writing the leech sibling as an oc or y/n, but i've just been calling them sage for now. on one hand, I really like the leech sibling reader fics, but on the other idk if it's okay to have this much lore and it still be an x reader.

anyways, i just wanted to write some general little hcs :)

they are the same age as jade and floyd. my reasoning for this one is just because it created more scenarios that made me giggle.

sorta a mix between the jade and floyd. not as unpredictable but also not completely calm. it depends on the situation, even if they choose to be chaotic at the most inappropriate times.

they like tech and internet related things. they're interested in video games and any relatively neat technology since there probably wasn't a lot of that in the coral sea. i also thought it'd be funny if they just had a hyperfixation on learning internet culture and became a living shitpost.

also i wanted them and idia to play obey me together bc teehee

they're in the light music club. not only are they in a room with kalim, lilia, and cater on a regular basis, but they're also given the tools to play music. mostly wanted this detail because they would play the most chaotic music. i could make an entire playlist for it stg-

they keep eating shit from the mostro lounge's kitchen. floyd doesn't do work 50% of the time, jade tries to force feed everyone mushrooms, sage is eating everything in the kitchen. perfect balance for giving azul a migraine.

nathan doesn't really handle the concept of free time very well. he feels like he HAS to make himself useful at all times and once he's just sitting around it feels like he's doing something wrong. back at mobius he would end up picking up some paperwork or another work-related task he's been putting off for a while now, just to get that finished; nowadays, he would end up cleaning his apartment a little bit, or going out for a very long walk just to get himself out of the house for a while, or he would end up working on some programming for a personal project

💙 - Describe their bedroom! Is it personalized, unchanged? Messy, neat?

nathan's bedroom is surprisingly empty. he has a very small apartment to begin with, but most of the clutter can be found in the living room / kitchen space, and in his bedroom it would be limited to the old secondhand cupboards that are being held together by duct tape and stacks of books. he never really makes his bed, he needs to be able to just dive straight in at any point of the day; the curtains are always closed but also pretty thin, so they still let through a lot of light during the day. he still hasn't been able to paint the walls an appealing color so they're a kind of yellowed white and the paint is peeling a lot, leaving little bits of it on the floor all along the edges. wouldn't hurt to run a vacuum cleaner through the room every once in a while but he doesn't own one :/

answered here! but this can also be interpreted as combat situations so to elaborate more on that interpretation: in combat, nathan likes to either use stealth or keep his distance. he's very naturally stealthy and is a lot stronger than he looks, so he can very easily tackle an enemy to the ground and stab them when they're down. he likes using a sniper rifle and also has good aim with a regular handgun, and he likes to put a decent amount of distance between himself and his enemies as to not get crowded

🌲 - Do they have a favorite location to hang out in?

nathan just really likes staying at home in his apartment. it's a very very crappy place that desperately needs a whole list of repairs and just a deep clean in general, but it's been his home ever since he moved to krimson city at age 16 and he wouldn't have it any other way. he loves being home and the comfort it gives him :]

⚡ - Does this oc have any unusual or “irrational” fears?

nathan's most irrational fear would be getting stuck in narrow places, not in the regular claustrophobia way but more in the "what if i get stuck in a ventilation shaft and it's very stuffy in there and i won't be able to breathe very well and nobody knows i'm stuck in there and then i die" way. he has this mostly with the idea of vents, or tunnels, underwater cave systems, mineshafts, etc etc despite the fact that he has to go into a vent maybe once during the events of tew2 and he never gets himself in another situation like that

He doesn't outright flirt, instead, he gives them stuff that reminds him of them! Or makes stuff for them!

For example, he'd probably just be browsing Spotify and come across a song that reminds him of them.. and now he's spending hours making a playlist of songs that remind him of them.

🌏 Will they give up the world for someone they love? is this decision easy for them?

**There's two ways I can interpret this question. The first way I interpret it is "giving up the world" as in sacrificing things that are important to them. The second interpretation is "would I choose between saving the world and saving this person in a life or death case". I'll do both.

Arctos would do just about anything for those he loves, especially Clara. He'd sacrifice every part of himself for her, and he'd sacrifice and risk a lot for anyone else important to him- without hesitation, because he values other people above himself. If it's a case of the second interpretation, oh boy, that's not an easy answer. He'd probably make the right choice in the end, but he'd have a hard time doing that, and it'd take a lot of convincing. I don't think he'd be able to handle losing her a second time if he did, though.

[CAREGIVER]

Caregiver hates everyone. That means if there happens to be an exception to that rule, yeah, he absolutely would, if we're talking about the second interpretation. He'd slaughter loads of people for someone he cares about and not feel a thing, I mean, he already kind of does that on the regular. Now if it's a case of giving up on things like his home and his dreams, that's a little more special. He'd most likely not do that though and turn on anyone who asked him to

🌌 What was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?

Ixirios is heavily inspired by old fairy tales and is themed around the idea of "spacefaring planet that never fully grew out of its renaissance era despite having advanced tech", so I wanted to give it history with some inspiration from classic fantasy, Arthurian legends, and fairy tales. I always thought knights were neat. Old legends and fairy tales also have common themes of "evil shadowy figures", who usually go "evil" after they're faced with hardship or loss, and "tortured fallen heroes who sold their souls to demons"- I see that trope in a lot of fantasy and I'm a sucker for it.

I noticed these characters are rarely really explored though, or even just stay bad guys who meet unfortunate ends with no chance to ever heal, so I went "what if the legends were a little twisted, and missing a bit of context? What if there's more to the story here? What if I focused on that tragic character and their pain? What if I gave that character another chance to be good?" and I put my own spin on it. Really, Arctos and Sableheart as a whole are a love letter to the fairy tales I grew up reading, but with a lot of personalization. :)

I can't trace any distinct inspiration. To be honest I mostly wanted to see how fucked up of A Guy I could make at first and make it a horror-themed character. Someone scary, but fun to work with and full of morbid humor. I needed to make more villains and the idea I had was something I felt would be refreshing. The bases of his character were that he's a robot (machine-specter/automa-specter), and that he's an "artist" who makes his "art" out of people, and turns them into monstrosities or fucked up home decor. Adding on to that I also wanted to balance it out by giving him a classy vibe, and make his kind of violence more calculated and precise than impulsive or chaotic. His character's grown a lot since then, but these were the starting ideas, and they've remained intact- they just have some extra depth and meaning now.

🎡 Are they someone who wants to kiss at the top of the ferris wheel?

Arctos doesn't trust ferris wheels or theme park rides much, and would probably be too anxious to think of this while on one, if someone miraculously got him to agree to a ride. However, if Clara got the idea first, he'd probably appreciate the distraction. Emotional support kiss to cope with The Terrors (the questionable structural stability of theme park rides)

I mean... Caregiver canonically never has a love interest and is never going to, but if anyone's enough of a weirdo to actually want to date him, and he somehow likes them enough not to turn them into an "art project", he'd probably be down. But... why would anyone want to make out with Caregiver? Machine-specters are all tentacles, warped flesh, and tongues (lined with sharp-ass teeth by the way) underneath the metal. I think that would kill the average person.

... Nevermind. I forgot there's a demographic for that.

🎁 What types of presents would they be most happy to receive? are they good at gift giving?

Arctos isn't very materialistic, he doesn't expect gifts or really actively want them, but he does appreciate the gesture. He'd mostly like things that are useful to him, books, clothing (since he does actually like fashion), or alcohol! He really likes fine wines and you can't go wrong with a good red. For gift giving, he'd probably go for something he already knows the person wants- so he's not a bad gift giver per se, but if he doesn't know, then he may be a bit more generic and gift them wine, if they're into that. He's also a huge fan of flowers (both giving and receiving), but that's reserved for romantic stuff. It's really more about the gesture than the item to him.

Caregiver likes receiving "prime, fresh material" for his "art projects". He'd be ecstatic if someone managed to reunite him with some of his "lost/runaway material" (people he was about to mutilate who escaped, or people he personally hates and wants to take apart), and he prefers them "fresh" (alive, he can't work with decaying tissue).

Sometimes he's very thoughtful and even gives his enemies warnings "gifts", made from some of his most fresh material! These are often things handcrafted by him, specially for that person! They always have quite the reaction. Isn't he generous?
