how to do things offline

either on your personal hard drive (just because it’s an app doesn’t mean the information is stored in your device) or on paper. I’m not saying the collapse of the internet is imminent, and I’m not suggesting we do everything completely without technology, or even stop using it until we have to. (to be clear, I also don’t think the internet will just blink out of existence, suddenly stop being a thing at all; rather I think it might continue to lose its usefulness to the point where it’s impossible to get anything done. anyway) but some people may have forgotten how we got by before the internet (I almost have!), and the younger generation might not have experienced it at all.

I figure most people probably use the internet mainly for communication with friends and family, entertainment and creation (eg. writing), and looking up how to do things, so here’s how to do those things offline:

First and most importantly, download everything important to you onto at least one hard drive and at least one flashdrive! files can get corrupted and hardware can get damaged or lost, but as long as you keep backup copies, you have much-closer-to-guaranteed access versus hoping a business doesn’t decide to paywall, purge, or otherwise revoke your access. I would recommend getting irreplaceable photos printed as well

download and/or print/write down:

anything important to you - photos/videos, journals, certificates, college transcripts

contact info - phone numbers and/or addresses of friends/family (know how to contact them if you can’t use your favourite messaging app), doctors (open hours would be good too), veterinarians if you have pets, and work

how-to’s - recipes (one, two), emergency preparedness (what do I do if… eg. I smell gas)

other things you might google: cleaning chemicals to NOT mix, what laundry tag symbols mean, people food dogs and cats can and can’t eat, plant toxicity to pets

and know offline ways to find things out - local radio station, newspaper, a nearby highway rest area might have a region map, public libraries usually have a bunch of resources

also, those of you who get periods should strongly consider not using period tracking apps! here’s how to track your period manually

free printable period tracker templates (no printer? public libraries usually charge a few cents per page, or you can recreate it by hand)

moving on to entertainment, you can still get most media for free! it’s completely legal to download your favourite movies to your own personal hard drive, you just can’t sell or distribute copies (not legal advice)

read, write, draw, or whatever your craft is, sing, dance, clean, reorganise, take a bath

go outside - excuses include napping (if safe), eating, reading, finding cool plants/animals/rocks, playing with the dog

zoos and museums can be surprisingly cheap

parks and nature preserves

library, mall, or game shop

and a few miscellaneous things for good measure:

Whenever I see a "if you like AI, pls die" post, a part of me wants to take a big, gigantic breath and blurt out the following, Wall of Text style:

Narrow AI is vital to several scientific fields and refers to algorithms that are geared towards the collection, classification and proper identification of datum. It doesn't steal, it doesn't crib from anyone else, but it certainly helps with overlaying false colours on CAT scans and MRI results, for example.

Narrow AI is in your spreadsheet documents. If a spreadsheet is based on a few formulae to keep track of your budget, some measure of AI is involved.

Narrow AI is your average spell-checker's brain, as well. Not Google's - Google Docs just outsources Gemini for some truly godawful proofreading - but your average offline, dumb-as-bricks spell checker qualifies as Narrow AI.

Narrow AI is in your GPS and in your phone's voice-activated commands. Remove it, and you'll have to lug maps around again, or run searches on your own.

So, I had a question about the phone.

1.What happens when GL turns their phone off. Do the BSD cast loose access to the internet when that happens?

2. What happens when GL's phone is permanently damaged and do not work anymore?

3. What happens if reader gets a new phone and they like give their phone to someone else like a hand me down? How would the BSD cast react to that?

4. Follow up to question 3, what happens if reader gets a new phone and doesn't download the BSD game.

Self-Aware! BSD. World Building. Phone

Warning: English is my second language. Some slight yanderish theme.

1. Kind of. They have BSD's World internet, and it will be "cut off" from the Real World Internet, when GL turned off the phone. They won't be able to open new pages, but will be able to see every previously opened page, doesn't matter if GL made an offline copy of the page.

2. First thing, BSD Cast did after gaining access to GL's phone—search for their accounts (starting with Google Account, ending with any random site's account). So, when Reader got a new phone and opened one of the apps/sites/social media/re-enter Google Account, BSD Cast will connect to the new phone.

3. Phone, as in a gadget, doesn't matter to BSD Cast. GL, a person, are the only one, that matters.

Yes, they will feel a tiny bit of hurt, that GL decided to change phone, but, after quick research, they will realize, that it's fine in real world to change your phone. As I mentioned before, BSD Cast will immediately link to new phone via GL's other accounts. And will make a super hard reset on old phone, so new owner will have hard time getting it to work properly.

4. BSD Cast will prepare in advance. They will see, that Mayoi App took many space on the phone, so, they will create few apps (a.k.a. some versions of basic apps in BSD Style). After they get linked to GL's new phone, they will offer a major update, that will replace some basic apps with better ones (and "lighter" in terms of needed space). Notes, interface of which similar to Kunikida's notebook, Calendar with slightly familiar chibis, Maps app with a small dog logo, etc.

While BSD Cast will lose a way to communicate with GL, they still will be connected to them.

Even if GL lose their progress in Mayoi and had to start new game on a new phone, BSD Cast will be connected to them. If GL abandoned one server and start playing on another, BSD Cast will be connected to GL.

Note! While BSD Cast have some yanderish tendencies, they continue to hold into GL's devices not only because they like GL, but also because with link to a gadget, plus a link to a person, will make their job to get to the real world easier.

As I mentioned in previous posts before, BSD Cast want to pay for GL's kindness, preferably, becoming friends with them, but they will step back and leave, if GL ask them to do it.

Can BSD get the real world without link to the gadget and only to GL? Yes, it will simply take more time.

so months ago, there was a tumblr post complaining about how every website forces you to use an app these days. for the most part, I agree with that irritation, but one of their examples was the laurel hill cemetery app. they were like "why does a cemetery even NEED an app?" and every time I see that post or the infographic it contained I get pissed off because LHC's app is fantastic, actually.

it's basically a free app that you can use that has audio tours, maps, and even an accompanying theremin concert you can listen to while wandering around the cemetery. you can download all of these things to use offline, too. it is a treasure of a resource and LHC works hard to make their historic grounds as accessible to as many people as they can!

I launch into this rant pretty much every time I see that infographic (which I've seen on reddit and twitter, not just on here) and apparently I did that on bluesky after complaining about the post here. I just got a random like on one of those posts out of the blue by someone I've never interacted with before.

If I’m being honest, the most useful skill for hacking is learning to do research. And since Google’s search is going to shit, allow me to detail some of the methods I use to do OSINT and general research.

Google dorking is the use of advanced syntax to make incredibly fine-grained searches, potentially exposing information that wasn’t supposed to be on the internet:

Some of my go-to filters are as follows:

“Query” searches for documents that have at least one field containing the exact string.

site: allows for a specific site to be searched. See also inurl and intitle.

type: specifies the tor of resource to look for. Common examples are log files, PDFs, and the sitemap.xml file.

Metasearch engines (such as SearxNG) permit you to access results from several web-crawlers at once, including some for specialized databases. There are several public instances available, as well as some that work over tor, but you can also self-host your own.

IVRE is a self-hosted tool that allows you to create a database of host scans (when I say self-hosted, I mean that you can run this in a docker container on your laptop). This can be useful for finding things that search engines don’t show you, like how two servers are related, where a website lives, etc. I’ve used this tool before, in my investigation into the Canary Mission and its backers.

Spiderfoot is like IVRE, but for social networks. It is also a self-hosted database. I have also used this in the Canary Mission investigation.

Some miscellaneous websites/web tools I use:

SecurityTrails: look up DNS history for a domain

BugMeNot: shared logins for when creating an account is not in your best interest.

Shodan/Censys: you have to make an account for these, so I don’t usually recommend them.

once you’ve got your date and destination locked, move fast. for booking hotels or stays, Booking.com and Airbnb are classics for a reason. if you want to save serious money, check out Hopper — it predicts when prices will drop for flights or hotels. if it’s a day trip, skip the stress and use Rome2Rio to figure out the easiest route (train, bus, carpool — it lays it all out).

split costs ahead of time to avoid that awkward “who owes who” mess later. Splitwise is the best app for this — it keeps a running tab so you’re not stuck calculating receipts on the last day.

for packing and planning, PackPoint saves you. input your destination, length of trip, and activities — it builds your packing list for you, so you’re not the girl who forgets a swimsuit for a beach day.

maps? don’t just rely on Google Maps. Maps.me lets you download full maps offline in case you end up somewhere with no signal (which always happens).

if you want to be that organized girl (the one everyone lowkey admires), put your itinerary in a free app like TripIt. it syncs all your bookings, plans, even restaurant reservations in one place.

and please — don’t forget the basics. portable charger, sunscreen (yes, even if it’s cloudy), and a good playlist (Spotify has endless ones but make your own so you control the vibe).

bonus tip: leave some room for spontaneity. not every second needs to be planned. some of the best memories come from the moments you didn’t script.

I think most people characterize a monopoly as kind of an economic thing or, you know, just a commercial thing. But really, a monopoly is a political institution. So, when we're talking about monopolies, we're talking about what is effectively a private government over a market, over an industry. If you're operating in a market which is monopolized, then you have a political boss who sets the prices, the terms of trade, who can buy, who can sell, and you're under their thumb. And yeah, it's your trade, right? So, it looks like the quote unquote economy, but in fact, it's really that a person or a firm has political power over you. And if you have enough monopolies in an economy, then at least in the commercial sector, which is a big part of our lives, we're not living in a democratic society. We're living in a society of a bunch of private governments — authoritarian governments over markets. ... There's a good quote from a plumber in the Wall Street Journal who said that, you know, the government can fine me, but Google can put me out of business because Google could take his business off Google Maps. They could change his ranking in Google search. And so, he was way more afraid of Google than the government. And that's because Google has governing power over the internet. ... So, what you have in a lot of areas — and in most, I think — is monopoly or oligopoly, which is just a small number of companies controlling a market, and [this] is now a systemic feature of the American economy. And it didn't used to be.

John Sherman, of the Sherman Antitrust Act, said that if we will not be ruled by a monarch, we should not be ruled by an autocrat of trade. He was very explicit about the link between monarchy and authoritarianism and monopoly. And they were using the term monarchy because fascism hadn't happened yet, but monarchy did exist. In the 19th century, Americans were looking across the ocean and they were seeing a bunch of kingdoms. There was a little bit of democracy, but that's what they were really looking at. And they were like, we don't want that. Today we would just say fascism, and we did analogize monopoly to fascism in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. It has always been foundational in America that concentrations of power are what we escaped, and they are not what we want here. And there's always been this tension because you do need to consolidate capital and effort to do great public works and to do great works in general. But how do you control the power of that? How do you control the power of industry? If you're going to put a billion dollars together to build a railroad across the country, that’s awesome. Now you have a transcontinental railroad. But who runs that railroad and controls the prices they charge, or the ability for them to charge different prices to different classes of people based on who they want to see succeed? Now, all of a sudden, you're talking about a political problem.
