Tucked away in a secret corner of the forest, this enchanting stone cottage looks like it was plucked straight from the pages of a fairytale. With ivy trailing up the weathered walls and sunlight dancing on the tiled roof, this charming retreat invites you to unwind and enjoy a tranquil moment in the quaint courtyard. The rustic wooden table, set for outdoor dining, is perfect for an afternoon tea or an intimate dinner surrounded by nature. Every detail, from the arched doorways to the flower-filled window boxes, whispers of timeless European charm, offering a peaceful escape into a storybook world where life moves at a slower, more magical pace.

Did ancient builders turn church domes into energy harnessing devices? This theory suggests old-world architecture, like the Hagia Sophia, used sacred geometry to tap into cosmic and Earth energy. From ley lines to atmospheric electricity, explore how domes might be ancient technology hiding in plain sight. Watch our video on the YT channel.

1990s-2000s 'Tuscan' kitchen appreciation long post
Just a note that as I've done a deep dive into this style recently, I've realized it's not really 'Tuscan' in terms of resembling the actual authentic style from Tuscany, and more an eclectic amalgam of various interpretations of older European styles. This included an exaggerated, 'McMansionized' version of Tuscan, mixed with French Norman, Renaissance, Tudor, French Country, Moorish, Baroque, etc. In that sense, I think this style should probably be given a more appropriate name, something like 'Old-World Luxe', since they did use the term 'Old World European' quite a bit back then to refer to this overall style.
Scanned from the book, Design is in the Details - Kitchens by Brad Mee (2003)

"Traditional European ArchitectureTM is the best! modern architecture is degenerate!"
"alright, well, putting aside my strong disagreement on the philosophical/ethical undertones of your statement- I do love old buildings! you must be a big proponent of paid apprenticeships for preservation students"
"um what?"
"well, people have to know how to preserve these buildings. and as it stands now, only those willing to go into student debt or with family money to fall back on while they study can afford to learn the techniques involved (unless they're lucky enough to be born into a family with their own preservation contracting business). young people aren't going into these fields even if they want to, because they can't take the financial hit"
"yes but why should anyone have to pay them to learn? they should pull themselves up by their bootstraps!"
"...right. well, what about preservation grants? nationalizing historical site museums?"
"government handouts! no way!"
"preserving and revitalizing traditional forms of building craftsmanship, like decorative masonry or plasterwork, stained glass, tiling, clockmaking, etc?"
"those things cost too much and will hurt the building company's bottom line!"
"talking about the people whose labor made these incredible works of architectural art possible?"
"woke history!"
"adaptive reuse, like letting businesses rent historical buildings with appropriate restrictions on modification?"
"ew! not in my backyard!"
"traditional buildings in styles from other parts of the world?"
"no, no, no! everyone knows western art is the most ~highly evolved~!"
"so, let me get this straight: you just want grand old buildings to be there, and stay perfectly intact, unused for anything, with no effort whatsoever. and you want new buildings to happen in that style but somehow as cheaply as throwing up a glass-and-steel skyscraper that starts falling apart in six months? also only western-style buildings, and we should only talk about very specific people who occupied them?"
"yes!"
"my guy, you don't actually love old architecture"

October 7th is World Architecture Day! Sacramento is well-known for its architecture with our city’s downtown and midtown areas home to many historic districts containing a variety of architectural styles from the late 1800s through the 1930s.
However, when it comes to our collection of cuts in our print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum, we do not have many buildings and much of them are unidentified.
For today, Howard letterpress printed a woodcut of a building, but we, unfortunately, do not know what was housed in this Queen Anne style building. This was made in the 1890s and it is from the Lewis Winter Collection. This has suffered some damage over the years and it has a crack in the middle, as evident in the print. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.

This 2000 Paradise Valley, AZ home was designed by Architect Juan Sandoval and it's insane. 5bds, 11ba, 17,912 sq ft, $17.5m + $133mo. HOA.
Tumblr media
The home looks so Old World that you'd never believe it was built in 2000. This is the entrance "foyer." Just look at the massive fireplace and front doors.
Tumblr media
This hall reminds me of the beautiful old Cuba style.
Tumblr media
The floor and ceiling in the dining room are incredible. Whoever did the faux finishes on the walls is a true artist. And, of course, it has an oversized fireplace.
Tumblr media
Not only is the kitchen huge, but it's incredible. The wood is gorgeous, but look at the marble and the enormous island.
Tumblr media
There's a stove, oven and sink.
Tumblr media
Over here, there's another large island, an additional sink, a double stove, plus cabinetry like I've never seen before, and an impressive exhaust hood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dine every day in front of the massive fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The stairs have a castle-like look and go down to the wine cellar, which is conveniently below the kitchen.
Tumblr media
It even has a kitchenette.
Tumblr media
The floors in this house are all different and incredible. Plus, there's another massive stone fireplace on the colonnade.
Tumblr media
Have you ever seen a fancier outdoor kitchen? This one features 2 grills and beautiful tile.
Tumblr media
The primary bedroom. It has access to the pool, and that amazing floor, ceiling and fireplace.
Tumblr media
This is the ensuite. The marble tub is 3 times the size that it actually has to be.
Tumblr media
And, look at the round shower.
Tumblr media
Super sophisticated closet/dressing room. But, it's one of 2.
Tumblr media
The 2nd closet.
Tumblr media
What a library.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I use the term rec room loosely, only b/c it has a full-sized professional bar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the smaller bedrooms. It has this beautiful marble bath and what looks like a kitchenette in the hall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is actually the inside of the garage. It fits 6 cars.
Tumblr media
The pool looks like it belongs in a resort.
Tumblr media
Beautiful fountain in the garden. 2.15 acre lot.
