"Free Translation/ Lao Tzu" (Man Arai): Essay

Man Arai, he accurately translated the lyrics of Mary Frye, the original poem of "A Thousand Winds", composed and made a big hit in Japan. He is a famous writer in Japan.

He had a weak constitution since childhood, and as a reading, he was familiar with "The Analects" (Confucius's sayings and deeds) and "Lao Tzu", but as he got older, "Lao Tzu" became more comfortable. That's right. Therefore, he wrote this book, "Free Translation /Lao Tzu" (Asahi newspaper, 2007).

In this book, Mr. Arai cut out unnecessary parts of "Lao Tzu" and reconstructed all 81 chapters (9*9) into 18 chapters (2*9). It's a short summary over and over, and you'll finish reading it in 30 minutes. Well, if you cut that much useless (!!) part, it will be that amount. (To put it bluntly, this is a presumptuous book that uses Lao Tzu as a soup stock.)

After reading it, I thought, "It's too clean." When Lao Tzu's words are translated into Japanese as they are, it is an accurate translation, but by “omitting”, the “diversity” of Lao Tzu is hidden, and Mr. Arai says, “I want it to be like this.”Lao Tzu image is amplified as he wants. Lao Tzu is not "clean".

Also, I was concerned that the expression “Boku”, which appears many times throughout Lao Tzu's writing, only appeared once, and that it was treated as unimportant.

Then, I found a statement in Arai's translation that should be clearly wrong. This is the expression on page 28, “Water conforms to the shape of the container” which is translated by Arai as meaning “water that has the flexibility to take any shape.”

Although this is very likely, it is an expression that does not appear in Lao Tzu, and it is an expression that originated mainly in Confucianism, and was included in the Jitsugo-sutra, which was used as a textbook for self-cultivation in Japan for a long time. It's a thing. This word means "If you make a bad person a friend, you become bad too." They have completely different origins and opposite meanings. To write something that is not in the text of “Lao Tzu” as if he said it would be ignorant and would be blasphemy to Lao Tzu.

Words of the Day: In general, this book is biased, and I don't think it's necessary to read it, but an anthology containing words that Lao Tzu would never say, such as “If you love someone deeply, you will gain strength.” I think that both is harmful.

It was the year of spring when you got the most lamest confession you've ever heard.

all from a man you'd never expect—nobody ever did expect that GOJO SATORU had the time and capacity to fall in love.

what a surprise, because he was too.

"go out with me," he states more than questioning.

like a giddy normal teenager that was not the most handsome man in the world—the, gojo satoru asked you out.

infront of everyone; without shame, oh but full of smugness that makes you want to reject him just to see his pride fall.

but perhaps the from shocking event did the thought not come to you that day, not when the pressure was all time high.

"This.." you start and the crowd quivers in their boots, boys and girls alike already demanding their victory from the bet, "this is what you greet me with after ignoring me for weeks, satoru?" the said man stiffens with his posture, and as if the bouquet of flowers he held felt the shift of the atmosphere—it dramatically wilted.

"oh, c'mon that was just—" he knew reasoning was futile when he gulps the words down his throat again, catching the way you glare.

and you spin your heel around. guessing with how he hangs his head low, you think he's discouraged enough to let it go and take the rejection.

but the man you knew was always so annoying, so stubborn.

you hear a call of your name but you don't snap your head like your-all-time-secret-is-out kind of surprise, but it's because the dumbest man spoke the dumbest words you've ever heard.

"I, the heir of the gojo clan, am insanely inlove with you!"

the crowd goes eerily silent, like time was frozen but not in a romantic way. It was embarrassingly awkward that you could hear the sound of a pin drop.

"what?" you spat out in disbelief, not comprehending his words and he takes it as another sign to repeat himself to you.

"I lik—" you stop him from talking by slapping a hand to his mouth, glowing eyes shimmering with the brightest smile known to man, "yes yes, don't repeat yourself!" you exclaim almost immediately.

your breath hitches in your throat the moment you feel his hand grasp your wrist, the one that covered his mouth and he points a finger to speak, muffled by your hand, "dso yu asekpt?" you could faintly make out the words he said—do you accept?

it syncs with the voice echoing at the back of your head ever since he confessed.

and yet, the answer always remained the same.

so you drop your hand from his mouth, catching the way his eyes follow your every move—perhaps enough to notice the hesitation, and he worries for the words you'll speak with such an expression.

quickly he starts before you speak, "Its fi—"

"I like you," he gets cut off, jaw slacked and unmoving in shock.

he blinks once or twice, but the crowd reacts before he can, waking him enough to respond back.

with a lopsided grin and dusted cheeks, he speaks again too—he thinks could be lost to the noise of the crowd, but with how close you were, he thinks you'll be able to hear even a whisper.

"I like you too."

Spirit Guide

Constantine is showing Billy Batson how to use magic (after discovering the kid doesn't have a mentor and again, IS A KID), they are entering into "Black Magic" and all that, Constantine is moraly grey so Billy don't care.

For practice they summon a Spirit to help Billy with his next classes, Constantine expected it to be dangerous cause you know, champion of magic and all that, but is surprised when into the summoning circle is a ¿Teen? (his age seems to change at times) in a hazma suit judging them. Honestly he is just happy Billy didn't summon a world threat (as far as he knows).

Billy explained Danny the situation and he accepted to help him with magic, he doesn't know a lot about it but can ask Desiree or Ghost Writer for knowledge. He also agreed in helping Billy when needed after heard about the "I am Captain Marvel/Shazam" mess and told him he is a protector spirit himself.

Constantine was amused cause that kind of ghost is rare, maybe the kid just have good luck. After that, Danny goes back and forth to Billy's lessons, helping him in both magic and being a kid hero (with some lessons about ghosts, dimensions and everything useful he can remember), he sees him as an apprentice of some kind. Billy even started calling him "Teacher Phantom".

He told Clockwork about it, completely proud of the boy's progress. Clockwork just judged him for not telling his supposed apprentice that he was the Ghost King but Danny didn't see the point in doing so.

Or at least, he didn't see the point of mentioning it until Constantine summoned the Ghost King for help with one of his subjects and as most of the heroes prepared to fight (cause this was supposed to be an unknown threat and probably hard to convince) Captain Marvel/Shazam was shocked and yelling "TEACHER PHANTOM?"

Which of course made Constantine curse his luck as the league misinterpreted everything. Danny might have made a miscalculation or two, but he didn't want to lose their friendship or tell them he was immortal, he was cut off from humanity for a long time.
