As much as I love Hal and Guy and John, sometimes I wonder what Green Lantern comics would've looked like if they never came back to their old roles. Like if instead of Geoff Johns's epic saga that begins with Hal's return, Kyle was allowed by editorial to succeed at restarting the Green Lantern Corps and became the leader of a new generation of GLs?

I think that would've been the natural progression of Kyle's character. For years he was called the last of the Green Lanterns and he carried that weight like Atlas holding up the sky. He tried so many times to rebuild the Corps that he'd only ever heard about from others, and so many times failed because he trusted the wrong people.

But what if instead, Kyle's faith in others was rewarded? What if his search for worthy ringbearers led him to the unlikeliest of candidates? A car thief suspected of terrorism, and a hermit too terrified to leave her apartment? The Guardians of old would have looked at Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz and found them utterly unfit to wear the ring. Many of the Justice League probably would too.

But Kyle Rayner was chosen by sheer, desperate chance in a dirty alleyway. He remembers the toll that unyielding demand for perfection took on his predecessors, how it broke Hal Jordan in the end. He remembers how he was just given the ring with no explanation or training or support and how that cost Alex her life. So Kyle chooses to help.

He helps Simon track down the real culprit behind the bomb. He helps Jessica find the men who murdered her friends. He teaches them that there is no shame or disgrace in fear, so long as they overcome it. And for once, Kyle Rayner's trust and optimism wins out.

The Green Lantern Corps is reborn. There may be only three of them now, but it's more than Kyle ever had before. He takes his partners (for all that he taught them everything they know, he considers them his equals) to the Watchtower. He introduces them to the Justice League, and then breaks the news that the two new Lanterns will replace him when he ventures out to the stars to continue recruiting.

But before Kyle leaves, there is one last thing to do. He brings Simon and Jessica to the Warriors bar in New York to meet their elders. John, Guy, and Alan already know of the new recruits, having heard through the grapevine (Oracle puts out very fast newsletters), but it's another thing entirely to see with their own eyes the small spark that Kyle had carried alone finally growing into a fierce blaze.

And unseen by all of them, Hal Jordan watches as the family he nearly destroyed begins to rise from the ashes. The Spectre feels a little more at peace because he knows that Kyle Rayner is not the last of the old Green Lanterns. Instead, he is the first of the new.

I'm torn on Poison Ivy. I feel like she barely needs any mods to become Rose (Obsidian and Jade's mom) but I'm also not sure I need a rose figure :P

Supergirl I'm also torn on. I do genuinely want an angel-with-fiery-wings supergirl figure, but I don't know how easy it'd be to attach wings to her.

41.) Bruce. He is lucky he's even in this high, for similar reasons to Dick. I think out of the entire batfam, they have suffered the most for decades atp. When Batfam was at it's worst throughout the early 00's and under DiDio, Steph, Cass, Tim, and even Jason were all still going strong. The same can't be said for Bruce or Dick. Bruce has been completely sanitized of anything that made him interesting, deified to the point it ruins his characterization of 'the one human/normal one' on teams he is on. Any female character within a 10 foot radius gets hit with the misogyny beam and gets completely shafted. Dan DiDio fundamentally ruined batman and idk if his shit is even salvageable atp. I loved Gotham stuff as a kid, even if I cared more for Flash/Green Arrow/JSA, so it's been absolute fucking AGONY watching it get this bad.

A bit late but for the @layton-npc-appreciation-week, I wanted to talk about Beth from The Last Specter:

Mostly because I've only now realized how important she's for the plot, years after playing LS for the first time.

Spoilers for Last Specter/Spectre's Call ahead!

So Beth worked as a maid for the Barde family, but got fired shortly before Evan's death, then started working in the Triton household. Which means she's the one who can tell you the most about both families and how things changed when the Specter appeared. And she does so!

Her first and perhaps most important action was actually before the game started. If you remember what Luke says…

That's right, she's the one who let Luke know about the flute being sold at the black market! She may not be aware of it but it's thanks to her that Layton and the other get to meet the Black Ravens and learn about Barde, and ultimately

In fact, if you think about it, perhaps she could have told them even more about this flute if they had asked her, since:

She already knew Arianna was the one playing it all along.

But that's not all! She has a role that might be less important for the professor but crucial for us players.

Indeed, she's the one giving us the biggest clues about Doland being an impostor:

In game, Layton realizes and proves he's the mastermind thanks to Luke's notes, which we sadly can't see.

But if we listen to Beth and help her, she'll tell us how Doland suddenly changed after the Specter appeared: his beautiful penmanship became nearly impossible to read, he started going out who-knows-where a lot, didn't gave her clear instructions like he used to, and got mean to her.

Another character, Jasmine, notices and mentions Doland's change in character but she doesn't say much except "he ignored me and my puzzle do you want to solve it?" while Beth gives us an entire puzzle based on Descole's awful handwriting.

And it makes sense: since they work together, she's the most likely to see the cracks in his act, and since he doesn't really care about her, she didn't get kidnapped nor blackmailed.

Other notable things she can tell us include:

Mentioning the oracle and that Doland knows about it.

Another clue that there's something hidden in the cellar, and that when Emmy thought she heard voices it wasn't just her imagination. (also the poor woman started to doubt her own sanity because of Descole)

She confirmed (although was there any doubt about it?) that Barde's death and his will are very strange, even if they were confirmed by the famous police officer Third-Eyed Jakes. She doesn't say it in front of Luke but she suspects that Clark killed Barde and now his ghost is haunting the house.

Speaking of Jakes, she informs you later that Clark left with him.

If you go see her before going to save Arianna she'll tell you that both Clark and Doland left without a word. Layton knows what's going on.

Not a hint but she also has this line:

Poor Beth struggles with Fake Doland's instructions and bad temper to the point she has to repeatedly ask Layton to help, she gives him puzzles (which he likes) and then feels guilty about it. This woman deserves a break. And someone to tell her it's not her fault Doland was so rude to her.

There's a lot more to talk about: how working under a manipulator's supervision affected her self-esteem, how her role in the story was overlooked, how the game treated her character… (I could probably make a whole post about sexism, working classes and the devaluation of social work… but not today)

All right let's swing into it. The game itself said Classic only, but you answered for both, and so I shall do the same!

2: Favorite character?

I answered Seiya earlier for Classic! Second favourite, dammit, I think I'm gonna have to go with Shun. As for TLC... don't make me choose! But it's generally a rotation of Aspros, Defteros, Regulus, and Albafica.

4: Favorite Silver Saint?

In Classic, it's gotta be Marin. TLC, we get approximately three Silvers because Teshi cared not for them, but of those three it's gotta be Hakurei. I keep looking at him going "younger twin, Cancer, second best... what evil are you hiding you weirdly buff grandpa".

10: Favorite God/Goddess? (Hades - Athena - Poseidon- Odin-ETC)

Hades. Hands down. I am a Spectre main forever and it is my opinion Hades should win. (I also have Dark Wing preordered, and both of my Myth Cloths are Spectres.)

17: Saddest character death?

It's so hard to say any of the Golds in Classic, because SoG is so goddamn funny with them. But I'll have to say Helena, just because Man Did She Need That!!! ;~; TLC, fuck, it's Luco. They brought Edward and Tokusa back why couldn't Luco come back!!!

19: Saddest/Most tragic Love Story?

Saint Seiya has surprisingly few love stories! So that makes it hard to decide. I can say it's not Orphee and Eurydice because I'm sorry, I could not get through it all without mocking them because I love Pharaoh too much. (Which is midostree's fault, idk if they're still around?? But their fault regardless.)

But I think for Classic I'm gonna go with Ikki and Esmeralda; and for TLC either Aspros and Defteros, or Ilias and Arkhes. Depending on how you want to read things.

24: Moment that made you laugh?

In Classic, during the Hades Arc, when Aiacos fights Ikki he Garuda Flaps him. And it doesn't work. And then he does it again and says "In three seconds he's gonna hit right here. For sure this time." and look, we all know Aiacos is a jokester and a trash fire of a man, and a lot of that is fanon because we honestly only ever really get slivers of personality from a lot of the opponents, but sometimes you come back to canon and you remember that you built that fanon off of canon in the first place and anyway Aiacos is so iconic.

In TLC, every single goddamn time they're like "oooooo Leo Ilias is so mysterious and so spiritual and so serious" like. This man ran away from Sanctuary, knocked up an Oracle of Delphi, and raised his kid in the woods while telling everyone he's a vegan while blatantly not being vegan (how else would Regulus have the concept of fish being food if he had never encountered it before??) and then only didn't die of magically-induced tuberculosis because a seventeen year old with a grudge happened.

It's so hard to take everyone's idolization of Ilias seriously when every single thing he does on and off screen tells a wildly different story. I love that man. He should've been a Spectre.

34: If you could bring a character back to life, who would it be?

Hyoga's mom. I think she should drive a jeep and make the Bronzes cookies when they're done beating up all the other gods. I really just think it would be entertaining.

As for TLC, it's so hard to choose... I'm gonna go Degel. He should've been allowed to retire with Fluorite, man. That's his wife. Why would you take him away from his wife. :( (Or Ilias. To make everyone have to deal with the man himself and not the idol they thought he was.)

40: Character you wish hadn’t died?

This is pretty related to the last one, but also imo different. I get why Shion and Dohko were the only TLC survivors, they had to be, but I wish some of the other Golds had survived. Elcid would be my top contender, I think, just because I think he'd actually enjoy retirement.

As for Classic, it's Dohko. I miss him. :(

44: More wasted character?

I ranted about Rhadamanthys' fight choreography last time, but I think I'm actually gonna go with Pandora this time. She's so interesting, and fulfills so many roles without really having a niche.

She's Hades' main guardian, his best servant, and the one in charge of the Spectres. Except she shares all of those roles with the twin gods and the judges. Her actual role seems to be the Persephone stand-in, but it's not actually clear what that entails.

Now, there's this tiny detail in Hades chapter where when Hades is exorcised from Shun, the starry sky of the Meikai vanishes to show a cave ceiling. Heavily implying that Hades' cosmos is their sky, and that he's the only reason why anything can live, grow, or exist down there at all. Implying further, if we reach a bit, that Persephone might have contributed the day to the Meikai, and without her, there's only endless night.

I really wish they'd given Pandora a proper role that was her own. Expanded on that Persephone stand-in. (Because it's very easily said that Athena probably killed Persephone, and that in order to keep the Meikai functional and the Titans in Tartarus, someone needed to sit on her throne, and Pandora just fuckin Happened to be the unlucky one closest to hand.)

She never really stands entirely on her own, and that makes her directionless a bit, in both TLC and Classic, although for different reasons. I would've loved to see them get her to make sense, tbh.

47: Favorite character from the Hades Saga?

This is so haaaaaaaard I love all the Spectres.... All of them. Well except Zelos maybe. (Raimi contributes entertaining porn that I accidentally jumpscare myself with sometimes, so he's not completely worthless...)

Like you could name practically any Spectre and I have a ton of thoughts on them. Hell, I've been very slowly working on a fic showcasing just that, that I want to be a masterpiece of writing. Maybe I should take another shot at parts of that.

I think I'm gonna go for an underrated fav: Thanatos' weird nymph girls that appear for thirty seconds and are never explained. What's up with them. Who are they. What's their deal. Were they once Persephone's Furies??? Are they his weird daughters like Hypnos has his four kids??? Are they just random souls in Elysium who figured out being cute in his general presence means they get the good chocolate cake???

Kurumada I want answers.

(As for TLC, it's Kagaho as a TLC-exclusive, but Fyodor's been growing on me. My fiance and I write a very large AU, of which my icon is that AU's version of a Spectre!Regulus, and Fyodor ended up Hyoga's dad and it. It works. We didn't expect it to but it works. But Kagaho is always the favourite. I have his Myth Cloth, I love both his VAs, I ship him so hard with Dohko, he's amazing.)

The Banshee's Cry

A fell keening echoes across the moor, Punctuated by the pealing thunder. Pouring rain lashes at the windowpane While argent cracks flash in the darkened sky, But the tumultuous storm cannot quell The ominous wailing of that fey hag.

A figure wrapped in a funeral shroud Glides swiftly across the tempest-wracked heath And draws closer to this ancient estate. A fearful being of mist and shadow, Well imbued with sinister witchery, Forewarns of a preternatural doom.

Master of this mouldering edifice Inhabited only by grey shadows And a myriad of pallid spectres, A withered scion of a once great house, I know the dreadful truth of the legends; The eldritch oracle foretells my death.

The prophetic call chills my troubled soul, But I resolve to accept my dim fate. A raddled face stares through the murky glass. My weak heart pounds rapidly in my chest; I hold the revolver up to my head. The banshee will be proved right One last time.

I dont know if someone asked this but who you think is the most misused character? Whereas, appears in a comic and its not used properly or it could have helped if it appeared in a comic or they don't have appearances lately but could be a good addition?

I think Spectre often is used kind of boringly... just OP magic guy, but rarely helpful (b/c if he's super OP and he's helpful then... the plot is too easy). same for phantom stranger, he normally just... hangs around. as far as I can tell that's just his entire thing. maybe if i read earlier comics he'd have a different thing in which he's less useless.

i think helena kosmatos could've been a much better to damage's backups than arn in terms of character who would've been a good addition, for misused/underused characters.

Wonder Woman, in big events, is almost always underused or misused like. in infinite crisis she didn't do anything. she didn't succeed in doing anything against mongul, talked to her alternate universe self... the plot was on superman (In the main thing) and batman (in backstory). i think writers include her because they "have" to because she's in DC's trinity, but they don't actually want to dedicate page time to her doing anything cool b/c they don't understand her character or care to understand.

modern day comics I don't think they're letting oracle babs do much.... that's pretty underused ;_;

i know once i actually hit post i'll suddenly think of a ton of answers but :P I guess good poitn for discussion who do you feel is underused?
