Pokeballs and Hilda Outfit (with a

Pokeballs: after finding I didn't quite like the initial pokeball I design I found I decided to look again with better results. Since buying or making irl Heal and Dive balls had been on my mind, and I couldn't find matching ones in the designs, I decided to make those versions.

Hilda: the initial idea was just to Reshiram-ify Hilda's outfit a little. Then I used Masters Ex Anneversary N as a reference, and at some point decided that a white shirt might not go too well with white feathers, skipped over gray and went into changing the stripes pink, and made the shirt a gray-pink.

What is the PR disaster in question that made Rick announce TSATS? I wasn’t active in the online fandom at that point

Of course! This was awhile ago so it figures people don't remember it/aren't familiar:

Basically a couple years back (2020) the fandom had some posts circulate discussing the ways different characters in the Riordanverse were written poorly or offensively. There was a masterpost that went around tumblr but the two major points people were particularly focusing on were Piper and Samirah (particularly because Piper had featured prominently again in Trials of Apollo recently and the third MCGA book had further emphasized and discussed Samirah being Muslim, since it was supposed to take place during Ramadan). Basically each had multiple posts breaking down the ways they were depicted incorrectly or offensively. The entire fandom for a little bit was VERY intensely discussing this (and it's around this time the "RR crit" tag got very popularized on tumblr - it did exist before, but suddenly was being used VERY frequently - cause it was that wide-spread - though the discussion took over basically every side of Riordaverse social media on different platforms). People really wanted Rick to respond to these criticisms, so he did!

He made two blog posts, one about Piper and one about Samirah. He has since deleted both so the links are to archived versions. The short version: he essentially tried to justify his poor research and double-down that he hadn't written them offensively, actually, people were just being mean to him. The fandom, of course, reacted poorly to this.

(Fun fact, this all happened within a month or so of the time i posted an open letter on aphobic tropes in the Riordanverse that Rick replied to, and then he immediately followed with announcing that Reyna was intended to be ace-coded [which cause a LOT of fandom debate] before Rick dipped for a couple of weeks, and then came back to post the blog posts in response to Piper and Sam stuff. So I like to jokingly refer to this as "The time I imploded the fandom/drove Rick off of twitter." Twas I that set the house ablaze.)

Rick fully left social media after this and the LT Musical social media manager became Rick's social media manager for the time being.

So this all happened June/July of 2020. Tower of Nero would end up being published in October of 2020 and a few months after that Rick would state that he was done with the series and wouldn't be writing any more series installments involving Percy, and also that he wouldn't be writing a Nico quest following Tower of Nero as it "wasn't his place to" and encouraged the community to write their own versions of Nico's story.

The community continued to circulate the tumblr posts and discuss the topics of Rick's offensive character depictions, and this is also where we see the dramatic shift in how the fandom depicts Piper in fanwork (though in most cases it is admittedly not an improvement 😬) because of all this discussion. This is also around the time when the fandom brought Viria under scrutiny claiming that she was whitewashing Piper as part of the same discussions, through the justification that she was drawing Annabeth as having tan skin (which she does canonically), and if Annabeth has tanner skin then Piper then that's whitewashing Piper? Except they were using completely separate images of not fully rendered Piper art versus Annabeth in dramatic lighting, so it's all very awkward and poor logic, and did actually get kind of racist. A lot of people were calling it "Tannabeth Blackchase" (yeah, i know) or similar and a common sentiment you'd see repeated is "Don't draw Annabeth as having darker skin than Piper, because that's offensive/racist/whitewashing." (Note: it was not phrased "don't draw Piper as having lighter skin than Annabeth" - we also won't get into certain offensive depictions of Native Americans, but I digress). But yeah, the Annabeth stuff in all that did not age well at all.

Anyways, in October of 2021 however Rick would announce that he was co-writing The Sun And The Star - with a lot of heavy emphasis on how Mark Oshiro works as a sensitivity reader, and some false advertising from the official social media that Mark Oshiro was the first time a non-Riordan author would be collaborating on the series (disregarding the ghostwriters completely). One of the big criticisms in the breaking down of issues in Rick's writing was his lack of ever seeking a sensitivity reader, and fans claiming that a sensitivity reader could solve a lot of the problems. This was basically Rick's "look! I totally listened!!!!" (though it did little to actually improve things, based on the book) and in TSATS as well Piper gets a large cameo at the end where the text very directly addresses a lot of points made in criticism of Rick's writing of her.

We also then of course got the CoTG trilogy later, explicitly stated to be for advertising purposes for the show.

So basically, short version: Rick came under scrutiny for a lot of offensive writing within the span of two months, made some bad blog posts doubling down about it, left social media. TOA ends. Rick says he wasn't going to continue the series/write what would become TSATS. Community celebrates the end of of the franchise but also continues to discuss Rick's poor writing and the blog posts at length. Rick suddenly announces TSATS and Mark Oshiro's involvement. Everybody gets distracted from being mad. Show announcement stuff also happens and the discussions peter out.

"N-Now friend, I, I think that you should maybe-" Sun stops, making a garbled sound mixed with static.

You pause your kissing, peering down at him with an innocent look, "Should maybe what?"

"Doing that is unfair and you know it," He mutters, it makes you chuckle. 

You trace your finger along the edge of his ray, humming. 

You think it was great that you'd ended up a shelf higher than usual in the supply closet this evening. You hadn't expected this level of control that would be given to you with such a vantage point. And you're greedily using it to get your way. Though, with Sun's lack of ability to form a coherent sentence, you'd argue he's also gotten his way.

Just likely not how he'd intended. 

He shivers, tone warning, "Starshine~ You're pushing your luck."

"Am I?" 

The glare he gives you doesn't quite work so well at this angle, "You are. I would suggest reconsidering before you take this any further."

"Oh, what's the matter?" Your hands shift to cup his face, "Are we getting a little flustered from all the extra attention?"

Your hands move again, quickly finding purchase at the back of his head and tracing patterns that cause him to again, short circuit. At least you think that's what's happening. You're not an engineer.

Sun's hands grip your wrists, pausing your inflictions.

 "No."

You huff, "Liar. If that was true you'd be actually telling me to stop, not beating around the bush about it."

"You're reading far too much into things," He says, while avoiding looking directly at you. 

With your hands unavailable you make do with being able to lean back down, mouth hovering over the bottom edge of his faceplate, "I don't think I am. Face it, you're out of your element and you're enjoying it. Though, maybe because that's not a common occurrence for you is why you're," You're just about to kiss him, pausing now to glance up and meet his gaze, "Hesitating."

While the Daycare Attendant's expression is usually unreadable, you feel right in that moment there's an especially palpable feeling radiating off him in that moment. It clicks when he releases your wrists, opting instead to take hold of your shoulders and kiss you fervently. 

Oh. He hadn't been expecting you to hesitate. 

As you kiss back his grip tightens, then loosens as those fingers start to travel. Down your arms, up underneath your shirt, finding a resting place that's definitely not after-school special appropriate, all the while still pressing kisses to, really any easily accessible piece of skin on you. 

You're panting when he finally pulls away, hands resting on either side of you as he leans in as close as physically possible. 

Sun's stare has a fire that shouldn't be possible, but you feel all the same, "And if I am? Enjoying it, that is."

Still so stubborn, but you can pick up on the uncertainty. You feel it's your job to fix that. 

You smirk, wrapping your arms around his neck as your fingers start to tangle into the wires behind his head. 

"Then let me ruin you, and assure you have no reason to be afraid."

A soft chuckle as he moves in once again, "Who says I was?"

i really cant buy the headcanon that phoenix and edgeworth were romantically interested in each other as kids or that they were in love for the 15 or so years they didnt see each other, like it just doesnt make any sense or work at all. but i dont think this actually contradicts the way i think some of those scenes in the anime felt a bit romance coded, or like viewing phoenixs becoming a lawyer for edgeworth as like a romantic gesture? like it wasnt actually motivated by romantic feelings at all but the actual motivations and everything that happens ends up contributing towards a romantic storyline? I have seen people genuinely disappointed that Apothecary Diaries is not yuri, and it's so funny because there is not a single point (canonically) in the series that suggests that she has so much as romantic crush on any woman??? 😭 Some even treat it as criticism, which is kinda weird since the story would not be remotely the same if not for Maomao and Jinshi's overall dynamic and connection (not just the romantic aspect of their relationship) which is, in part, influenced by their positions in society as a commoner woman and a high-ranking man.

I kinda feel like people want to change things about Maomao's character to fit a mold that she just doesn't fit. Someone pointed out that one of the reasons why Jinshi seems to be the only character in the series that people constantly hold to modern standards is because he gets in the way of her fitting that mold. The excuses I see just to make her being in a relationship with him seem "forced" are hilarious; y'all need to be comfortable disliking things simply because you don't like it. Some of the same people who get mad at people for enjoying the romance aspect of the series when it's not harming anyone. I agree that the series is so much more than just romance, but that doesn't mean that it being someone's favorite aspect is wrong. Part of me thinks that some people feel as if she isn't "unique" enough if she falls for him, when a) that doesn't ruin her character and b) she has so many qualities that make her interesting regardless.

For example, I saw a post (not on here) that said it was terrible to see a girl so "obviously" autistic and ace-coded to be "groomed" into a romantic relationship. It really gets to a point. 😅

And her only falling for one (very persistent and attentive) person makes so much sense because it is hard for her to even open up her walls enough to openly regard someone as a friend (like in the most recent episode). What makes you think she will go around easily falling for all these people.

People are going to have to come to terms with the fact that, although romance isn't the main genre, there is without a doubt romantic development between the two, especially starting with LN 5 content.

(This is about the general online English-speaking side of the fandom — especially twitter and tiktok. This is not about people who enjoy other ships, just my thoughts about people who I have seen complain and act like it drags the series down.)

Racism in the ace community is seen as a joke from the outside and a confusing concept in the inside but it's pretty bait tbh:

Barbie, Wednesday and Elsa are ace-coded but not canon aces but they're widely accepted as ace icons in the community. Lacking genitalia, disliking romance and being single are not inherently asexual yet the community happily claims them as ace solely on those reasons. But Selah Summers? Nah she actually didn't say the words "aroace" even though the director confirmed it so she didn't really count. Abbi Singh? Nah she had a girlfriend and her superpower is being a succubus and it's not like the Imperfects actually addressed the themes of an asexual lesbian South Asian woman and her sexuality or anything. Fei Hargreeves? Well yeah the actress and producer confirmed it but she never said it on screen. Ace characters of colour always get held "screened" for approval to be "real rep" in a way white aces aren't its so weird (this also happens to gay aces but that's another post)

Almost anything involving Yasmin Benoit. The reason she's unacceptable ace rep is because of misogynoir. She's spoken so many times about never dating and not having sex (which mind you is none of our business and she shouldn't need to explain herself in the 1st place) and yet she's "too sexual" to represent the community. Again with the nitpicking, popular white ace accounts were so quick to dogpile her for not-so-good takes but when she speaks about racism? Crickets. When she spoke about sexual harassment? Crickets and not only that but they defended her harasser. The main ace activists that defended her were other Black aspecs.

Not understanding how desexualisation affects POC. Specifically, Black women are excluded from representations of love and sex because we're seen as undesirable. It's common for TV/Film to pair up everyone but the Black girl, or have a rebound Black partner for the non-Black main character who's disposed of when they're ready for their "real" non-Black partner again. This isn't done for Black aspecs benefit. It's a form of dehumanisation. Friendship especially in m/f is needed but exclusively pushing for friendship between Black women and non-Black men when there is romance coded or confirmed and shaming Black women in fandom or in show for shipping the Black female character is not doing what you think its doing.

Not understanding how sexualisation effects POC. Again linking to Yasmin, POC, especially Black people have been sexualised due to white supremacy. The "allosexual privilege" framework fails to acknowledge this because Black people's sexual attraction and sex is seen as aggressive and animalistic. Black people aren't "allowed" to be ace because of this sexualisation and why Yasmin regardless of what she wears or does is seen is too promiscuous.

Not acknowledging ace POC as ace rep. Again, where was the acknowledgement of Selah and the Spades as groundbreaking rep? The first aroace darkskin Black girl as a lead in any film? Sherronda J Brown spoke about Big Mouth's Black ace character and someone said it didn't count just bc they dislike the show. Again with Abbi and Fei the community didn't make noise for them like they did Todd from Bojack Horseman or Florence from Sex Ed (mind you the gap between how they did Florence vs O is jarring in itself) Isaac from Heartstopper was inspirational for many aspecs and I wont take that away but the way he's instantly credited for ace representation when he has so little screentime compared to the others is wild.

Just tired tbh. "Listen to POC aces!" "POC aces are valid!" Prove it then...?

Tonight's the Night You Fight Your Best Mate's Dad by Opossum_Subatomic

Everyone's Alive College/University 5+1 things fic featuring Charles bringing Edwin coffee and slowburn payneland. Also Family/Wedding Drama involving Everyone Thinks They're Dating so acute is verges on Fake Dating. This author is seriously fantastic, everything they write is gold.

You should also check out Kissing Lessons, which is a high school AU that does what it says on the tin while also giving non-binary Monty and polyamory.

Monty gets a job working at Tragic Mick's. This one's not actually payneland, being gen and Monty-centric. I know, gasp. It's a fantastic and very sweet exploration of Monty discovering his sense of self post canon and works as a great metaphor for recovery from toxic family/relationships. Also, the ex-animal solidarity and bonding with Mick is lovely.

The Sandman crossover featuring Edwin and Hob being kidnapped and tortured together. Their friendship is really wholesome with eventual Father Figure and Found Family Feels for the whole agency and background Dreamling.

Payneland Right Person Wrong Time AU in which neither of them die but they still meet and become friends. The May/December friendship is sweet but tragic, with a bittersweet ending. Superb.

In which Charles curses himself with a Sleeping Beauty enchantment in order to confirm his feelings for Edwin and Crystal is the real MVP. I love this one because the boys are both SO stupid but in very different in-character ways.

I also recommend Promised, in which they kind of play the Green card angle to keep Edwin out of Hell? Which honestly needs to be more of a trope. And Tight Quarters, starring the boys trapped in a magic circle, leading to Forced Proximity induced Feelings Realization (in more ways than one! 😉).

Something I Can Turn To by DontOffendTheBees

I love some domestic fluff, in this case as an Everyone's Alive/Childhood Friends AU in which the boys are poor but happy living together. I liked how they both survive their respective traumas, but Reality Ensues.

I also recommend Lived My Whole Life Before the First Light for a lovely but melancholy Soulmate AU that goes for the "seeing colours" trope for extra wistful angst.

Dining at the Ritz by TerresDeBrume

Meeting the Parents fic in which Edwin's parents are awful and Charles is Not Having It. This has Everyone Thinks They're Dating and autistic Edwin stimming representation, plus discussions of racism, classism and ableism. The fic is also part of a great Modern AU series in which the boys attended St Hilarion's at the same time and Charles saved Edwin from a non-supernatural but still almost deadly prank. Highly recommended!

Listen, I can't get enough of undercover fake dating/relationships at a couples retreat, OK? Some minor angst but overall very cute and fluffy.

I've talked about a bit about this here and here and most importantly HERE where I discuss that this is a situation where the reason WHY a person headcanoning Bart Allen as asexual is important, as well as how they are depicting it.

Headcanoning him as asexual based on the substantial comic evidence in his solo series is entirely valid and is not rooted in ableism or aphobia! Regardless of the fact he has had romantic and sexual relationships in later comics the headcanon stands because it's just a headcanon and because in real life scenarios a lot of real life asexual people do enter in sexual relationships (and the same for aromantic people in romantic relationships).

Also just headcanoning him as asexual because he has THE VIBE or simply just because is also valid.

Where this headcanon becomes problematic and ableist is when people headcanon Bart as asexual because they are infantilizing him as a character a-la "He's just Timkon's child he has no idea what sex is" when he's 1.) not their child, that was an off-handed joke made once 2.) the same age group as them 3.) shown multiple times to have an understanding of sex, relationships and all sorts of 'adult' themes.

WHY this is problematic (and a shitty thing to do) is because Bart Allen is an autistic coded character, where even his creator Mark Waid supports other people's interpretations of him being autistic although it was unintentional on his part. Autistic people are very, very, very frequently infantilized in real life, in media and in fandom spaces where people often make them child-like when they are not.

This is a form of ableism that not only impacts autistic people, but others who are neurodiverse in different ways.

It is also a form of aphobia as well because it makes the claim that people who are asexual are child-like.

TLDR: headcanoning Bart as ace (or aro/aroace) is not inherently ableism, but if you are only headcanoning him as this because you personally seem him as childish due to his autistic coded behaviors then you're being ableist and an ass.

Final thoughts; Bart is not childish or 'shy about sex themes', he is very much a pretty typical teenager.
