Shoutout to ship pairings that only work well as exes. Sometimes romantic and platonic dynamics just aren’t the vibe. Sometimes characters have too much chemistry to not be drawn to one another romantically but also the idea of them actually being together long term just doesn’t feel right in your soul. Two people who really wanted it to work but didn’t and now they’re dealing with the fallout. Show me the bitterness. The civility through gritted teeth. The alimony checks. You’ve seen the rawest, most vulnerable part of me and now you’re walking around the street as if we’re strangers. Maybe they stay friends and that unspoken resentment lays dormant just beneath the surface, both of them refusing to look it in the eye. Ghosts don't sleep. They don't even really get tired. At least, not tired in the way sleep would fix. When Charles first dies, he attempts to sleep, but he never can manage it. No matter how many nights he tries. Eventually he gives up.

But he never gives up asking Edwin to read to him at night. Edwin's voice as he reads is warm and steady. Comforting, even. Charles may be dead at sixteen, but he isn't alone. He thinks his best chance at falling asleep is if Edwin is there to read him a bedtime story.

It's probably silly. But Edwin doesn't seem to mind.

Edwin reads him mostly detective stories at first. Sherlock Holmes, anything by Agatha Christie, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, of course—which is where they get the idea for the agency in the first place. But Edwin loves books of all sorts, so it isn't long before he's branching out into other genres.

Usually it's old books. Books from before Edwin was even alive. Books Charles would've avoid reading in school. Pride and Prejudice. Frankenstein. Jane Eyre. Oliver Twist. Somehow hearing them in Edwin's voice makes them much more tolerable.

And some are fun. Treasure Island is one Charles finds himself requesting over and over again. He always liked pirates. Lord of the Rings is another favorite, although maybe Charles is just excited that Edwin finally found a book that was published after he died.

Niko introduces Edwin to much newer literature. Teen romance novels with bright covers and cutesy, wordplay titles. Edwin even reads some of the books about boys kissing boys. An adorable, pink blush creeps across his cheeks every time still, but he's getting more comfortable.

Ghosts don't sleep, or even get tired. But Charles thinks he almost gets drowsy sometimes, late at night, when their living friends are sleeping, and he is curled safely and comfortably into Edwin, listening to him read.

The scene where Niles and Fran are eating food and whining about losing their respective dumb rich partners is honestly the best scene in the whole show. What do you think about the reverse happening? Max and CC being (probably drunk) and worried that they’ll lose Niles and Fran

I like this idea, mostly because I like when CC is allowed to be normal around Maxwell.

I think Max would, in his own bumbling oblivious way, reassure CC that Niles loves her and that he’s never seen his oldest friend happier. He’d say that he thought Niles loved Katherine (at which CC would make a face) but then Max would shake his head and say that doesn’t compare to how happy Niles is now. I’d like to think Max might even admit how embarrassed he is that it took him so long to recognize Niles’s feelings for CC because now that they’re together, it all just seems right.

Then Max would start talking about Fran and CC would, of course, stop listening.

Hugo processes everything he just said. It honestly almost felt like a dream as soon as his words click to him. "That ... sounds really nice, goggles." he says softly, a genuine smile crossing his face. It's all he could ever ask for really.

"If you agree, I promise I'll make sure you have a home to go to." Varian insists with as much care as his voice could express, sounding more sure of himself, that this is what he wants— because it is, more than anything right now.

"I already have one though." says the blonde in return.

The other alchemist blinks inquisitively, it's adorable every time he makes a curious face. Hugo couldn't help but let a fit of giggles escape him, "A home. I already have one."

"Where?"
