We have the same owl, which also used to be our family owl. It's so amazing, because it's like part of the home always being with us. You know? So yes, I would say we have a special connection with Captain. Roy confirms that, too!

We've never even thought of getting another one for us personally, to be honest. Anyway. I hope you'll be able to relax a bit today.

Apparently in the Valentine's Day special, Tina (Identical 8) and Evelyn (Identical 14) were once couple since they were holding hands while visiting to the Carnival. I'm not joking! Some Random SpongeBob fan pointed that out (could this mean that some of the Background Fish are secretly LGBTQ?)

As far as jobs go, this gig wasn't too bad. Eddie wouldn't call him a connoisseur of the fine arts by any measure, but he knew how to appreciate passion that went into every work. He wasn't there to gawk though. He was there to guard. A friend of Wayne's worked the night shift and had gotten Eddie the job during the day.

So he got to patrol a pretty swanky art museum and broaden his horizons. And the pay wasn't half bad either considering how cushy it was.

Like most art museums, the exhibits were divided by era and country of origin. Sometimes whole side rooms dedicated to a single artist. There were mostly paintings and statues housed here, with the occasional odd exhibit like masks or minature figures. There was an annex building across the street that held the collection of modern and post modern art.

Eddie typically preferred the kookier stuff there but he enjoyed being around the classics. Especially the statues. Especially Steve.

In the hall for marble statues, there were many the depicted the human form in all its beauty, but none were as beautiful as the one simply titled 'Steve'. That definitely seemed like an underwhelming name for such a magnificent piece. But in the couple of months he'd been here, Eddie had grown to love the simple name.

Steve was carved in a lounging position and when Eddie first saw him it looked like he was waiting for a lover. There was a cloth carved into him that draped in such a way to only just barely give him modesty, leaving the rest on display. Had it not been stone, it looked like the slightest breeze would expose him. Like most of his peers, Steve's body looked strong and sturdy. And yet the way he was posed and positioned made him look soft.

Eddie didn't notice the first time he looked but after passing through and looking enough (leering, gazing, obsessing) he realized Steve even had a glorious patch of hair on his chest. Now that was rare. All these bare chested figures and very few of them showed any body hair outside the one atop their heads.

And that mane of his. Thanks to policy, Eddie had to keep his own locks in a tight bun under his hat. Steve's hair, thick and luxurious flowed freely. Eddie thought more than once to touch it, sure that despite the marble it was as soft as it seemed.

Another eye catching feature was the scarring on Steve's back. To make something so exquisite and then put the suggestion of violence... Sometimes Eddie wanted to look up the history of Steve's creation.

So greeting Steve became a normal part of his guard route. Even when he technically wasn't supposed to be in that wing, who was gonna stop him?

"Morning gorgeous", he'd greet some mornings as he passed by, coffee in hand.

Sometimes, when the room was mostly clear, he really would just stand and stare, taking it all in. He could look at most of the art for only so long before he lost interest (except for some of the landscapes, some of them were breathtaking and literally took him to a different world) but Steve.... Steve was something he could look at for hours.

And he would've if the crowds didn't come by to get a gander as well. So he did his job, made his rounds, kept people from getting too close to the art and then clocked out around 4.

"Night Stevie", he said on his way out, even though Steve's pedestal was out of his way to the exit.

It was all pretty nice until they switched him to the night shift unexpectedly. Eddie was a night owl by nature, but he preferred to use that time leisurely. That and he was more likely to come across an actual thief at night.

And also museums were kinda creepy at night.

He took a deep breath and leaned on a statue of the goddess Nike.

"Let's make a deal. I do my job, you slice and dice anything that comes through those doors."

As he bargained with the stone goddess, he thought he heard voices down the hall. Must be the other guards. For sure. Besides Eddie, there were like, five other guys doing patrols or watching the cameras. They were all Wayne's age though, so not a lot in common.

Needing a balm for his nerves, he ventured towards Steve's way.

"Heya beautiful. I knew comin' to see you was the right choice." The moon came in through a sky light and made Steve glow. "I'll come back for you Stevie, probably more than once if I have a choice."

Eddie was walking past Steve when he heard a voice reply to him.

"I'm glad you came tonight."

Eddie froze, and carefully turned.

Steve was looking over his shoulder.

"You....you're...."

Steve got up from his lounging position to stretch his arms and back and it sounded like rock grinding gently on rock. Eddie could hear similar sounds all around him. All of the statues were moving. All of them.

Eddie was still frozen solid in place. Almost like he and Steve switched places. Steve was sitting upright on his stand, that cloth still just barely covering him.

"Did you mean all those things you said?", Steve asked.

Eddie didn't know what he meant but he never lied so he just nodded.

Steve curled in on himself, bashful looking and Eddie wanted to wrap him up.

"You really think I'm beautiful?"

Eddie found his voice because if there was one thing he could say right now it was what he thought of Steve.

"Like an angel. Like a vision. You're the most beautiful person I've ever seen." This time Eddie stepped closer to Steve, still in shock but not afraid. "So, I am in fact totally mesmerized by you and by what's happening, but what the hell is happening?"

Steve held out a hand and Eddie took it without question. It was still cold and the surface was hard like stone but somehow flexible like a real hand.

"I'll explain on the way", he said, stepping down so that he was on his feet. He was about the same height as Eddie.

Eddie had about a million questions. But Steve's voice was as attractive as the rest of him so he could listen all night.

Hello Alsius! I'm a bit of an owl connoisseur and I noticed you are have, excuse me, a beautiful specimen drop you the Prophet every morning. On my third visit to the Owlery today, I saw that owl perched in a nook next to Sebastian Sallow's Iris. If you do not mind sharing, can you tell me more about your owl? I was tasked with writing up this year's issue of Hogwarts' Students and their Favourite Companions for the library archives and would love to include yours.

Dear unnamed owl connoisseur,

I had no idea the school had such a journal. I am happy to contribute for the record, though I fear my entry won't be overly interesting.

My owl, Peanut, is a standard British barn owl. I spent most of my childhood moving about, in rural areas more often than not, so many days I occupied myself by exploring whatever wilderness I found myself in. On one of my outings, I found an abandoned and injured owlet. I'm not sure if he fell out of his nest or was picked up by a bird of prey and dropped before he could become a meal. Either way, it was a miracle he survived until I happened upon him.

I am the child of healers, so at the time I knew enough basic healing magic to keep him alive until I could return home, where my parents helped me nurse him back to full health. There was little chance he would survive let alone thrive if returned to the wild, so I trained him (to the best of my meagre abilities), and we've been together ever since.

He is a bit of a free spirit and enjoys extended hunts. He isn't overly fond of store-bought owl treats. Outside of his normally-hunted meals, he enjoys peanuts (hence the name), but I try not to give him too many as to not negatively impact his health. Some say he is a bit cantankerous, but I don't see it. He simply likes to live on his own terms and I respect that. I am just thankful he still sees fit to deliver my post.

Sincerely, Alsius P.S. I had to use a school owl to deliver this because Peanut has been less than reliable lately. The last time I checked in on him, he was nowhere to be found, so it's a relief to know that you spotted him in the Owlery and that he did not find himself in any sort of trouble.

A Little Hot Take but what exactly is your own LEAST Favorite Moment involving around your own Boi (Slappy)?

Squidferatu.

I loved pretty much all of Slappy's appearances but Squidferatu is the only one that rubbed me the wrong way.

Its frustrating since it was an episode I anticipated for so long and I don't want to say I don't like it. I do. I adore the work that went into literally recreating the Nosferatu movie down to the tiniest details. At first I didn't quite get why I wasn't a big fan of this episode and after some rewatches, now I know. I just don't like what they did with Slappy.

This is going to be an annoying rant so fair bit of warning:

Slappy is a peter lorre parody and a pretty generic one. That's how peter parodies are, its been 60 years since the guy passed. Whenever he's imitated in cartoon its always a vague copy of a copy and half the time even the people who made the parody don't know lorre specifically which I dont mind lol. And even the people who were familiar with his movies still made his parodies more of a "creepy weird guy" then anything actually inspired by the characters he played. (Lorre rarely played horror, I don't know why he's known as The Horror Boy™. Especially since it's the Noirs he starred in that are much more famous).

But anyways, one trope of the peter parody™ that I never liked was making it Igor.

I don't know WHY Igor has sorta become a peter parody (even the book The Animated Peter Lorre includes several Igors as Peter Parodies) but its really annoying when it's like "look at this peter parody" and all they do is snivel and go "yes master/no master/.."

I can't complain since peter parodies are really generic but I just don't like this trope. There is characters who do sorta do this like Yetch from Mad Monster Party but he does enough to be their own thing which is why I like him.

It was just frustrating seeing Slappy only doing THAT in this episode. Especially since there's so many other things you can use for inspo for his character.

Yeah, he's supposed to be the Renfield™ to Nosferatu's Dracula and Renfield does that. (And the Renfield trope goes hand in hand with Igor because Dwight Frye's portrayals of both characters are the most famous examples)

But it felt like character assassination lol

All he ever did was disrupt and laugh maniacally. There wasn't much of what made me like Slappy in the first place. I love how unsettling Slappy can be but he's always been relatively harmless. He's just there for a good time. I get the circumstances are different since he's at work™ and his job requires him to be a threat lol. But it just didn't feel like him.

Any time the episode felt like it was building suspense, Slappy always came in to disturb. Not even in a funny way or creepy way. It was just kinda annoying. He does nothing but giggles maniacally (which is a staple of peter parodies ESPECIALLY the Looney Tunes Peter parodies and it's something I love. But not THIS much)

I know Nosferatu can't speak so Slappy has to talk for him and that's fine. Slappy is supposed to be creepy and unsettling which is something I always loved. But it just felt kinda bleh.

It didn't feel like Slappy. A good example of Slappy being unsettling was his debut. It wasn't as noisy. He moved kinda slow and sluggish, he looked half dead. He felt so off and out of place with his movements compared to other characters, he was pretty much an anomaly since you didn't know who he was or why was he even thete. He's a weird jokester and his jokes were just weird and didn't make much sense. He was very uncomfortable the first time I saw him and I was enchanted. It was so SO weird. AND I LOVED IT.

He felt so over the top in Squidferatu without any substance. It just felt so in your face every time he did something that was supposed to be creepy. Like "ohh look how creepy and WEIRD he is" but nothing that actually felt weird besides the bug eating (which is a Renfield trope)

It's weird because the sister episode Slappy Daze is pretty much exactly how I viewed Slappy. It was literally all I wanted from his character lol. (You can tell I love it A LOT) Even his later appearances in the show has him be the creepy weird little guy we all know and love but it's not like Squidferatu.

I thought initially I didn't like Squidferatu much was because slappy had so few appearances, maybe I had my expectations too high or imagined him being something else. Nah now I know with Slappy's more recent appearances that Squidferatu is out of character.

Idk, if I was to fix the problem, I think I'd shoot more for how he was in his first appearance. A little bit quieter and more realistically unsettling but not so over the top.

Or even take inspiration from a Peter Lorre character. I feel like the character of The Stranger from The Stranger on the Third Floor would be a REALLY good to take inspo from. Quietly unsettling. Speaking much more softly but you can't escape him and you always had the lingering feeling like he was going to do something.

It feels stupid to really complain about this. It just irritates me. I still like the episode and I REALLY like Nosferatu.

I also like how you get to see more of Nosferatu's castle and slappy's interactions with Nosey in future episodes and I really like how they get along.

Eh. Personally I like to think Squidferatu is from Sponge and Squid's POV. Everything feels over the top because you're seeing it from their eyes vs what actually is.

I still adore Slappy for all of his "annoying" traits. But Squidferatu isn't his best moment imo.

TBC #6-11 9-13 May 2023

I am jetlagged and don't have the time or the brain to write up anything beyond some bullet points, so here goes:

I spent almost as much time at Dial Arch as I did in the show. This is not a bad thing, especially when there are friendly British fans and friendly performers and crew about. Imperial pints, yay! UK spirits measures, boo.

The VIP was worth doing once. Subtle references to the Eleusinian Mysteries on the kykeon bottle, nice. I don't know what the spec is but basically it was a drink for people who don't like whisky--mostly pineapple and other fruit flavors, presumably with some Dewar's in there somewhere. The museum/hallway scenes with Yilin and Sam put some nice flourishes on the Persephone storyline.

The three high points of my shows were these: 1) a Full Persephone with Lily, managing both X:1s and the Elysium coda. 2) a new-to-me Hades 1:1 with Sam, which brought new meaning to the word "underworld." 3) Fania bouncing back and forth between queen of Troy and queen of Mycenae.

Other things I knew that I'd enjoy, and did: seeing Ingrid on as Cassandra and the Watchman. Spending a loop in Peep with Lily and Isaac (I still can't get that stack-of-drawings trick to work, though).

New discoveries for me this time included a bunch of scenes that I hadn't witnessed before, and performers I'd never followed before. Ally Clarke as Artemis, holy smokes, and as Luba. Brenda Lee Grech as Macaria, ditto. Omar Gordon as Luba and then Agamemnon (with Fania/Clytemnestra!).

Thanks to FOH for taking pity on five of us huddled under two tiny umbrellas during a sudden downpour, and letting us into the lobby early.

I think I'm a real connoisseur of the blinding / Troy finale now, although I can't quite articulate the difference between when it works for me and when it really REALLY works for me. It's almost always moving and in fact more of the scenes were moving to me this time--I think knowing the space and the rhythms better meant that I could just get swept up into the narrative more easily. So I was tearing up at scenes both familiar and not. The bit where the Watchman mournfully takes up Iphigenia's red cape and holds it up to a rope as if it were a sail--sob.

There were some other 1:1s and walkouts and such, which don't need enumerating. All of them gifts.

I finally found the Gallow Green postcard and the owl bedroom! The end.
