Multiple Sclerosis: Relationships between Locus of Control, Coping Strategies and Quality of Life
Tumblr media
 Abstract
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory, demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system. It usually presents with a variety of physical, cognitive, and psychological signs and symptoms. The normal course of illness, unpredictable, leads patients to an inevitable reactive condition that affects their family and their own life. It is believed that individual persuasions about the ability to manage the events of life has direct consequences on the control of life itself, above all on treatment and medical care compliance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between locus of control and the impact of psychological features in the choice of coping strategies in patients affected by MS and their influence on Quality of Life (QoL). For this reason, we enrolled 87 patients (66,7% women, 33.3% men; mean age 42.1) affected by relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis according to Mc Donald’s criteria and with disability corresponding to a mean score of 2.2 on Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Participants were followed periodically at our Multiple Sclerosis Centre. QoL was assessed using the SF36 questionnaire. Clinical disease progression was evaluated using EDSS; locus of control was used as a psychological variable. Numerical data were expressed as mean and standard deviations, categorical variables as number and percentage. The results demonstrated that patients with an external locus of control had lesser perception of physical pain (p=0.0003), vitality (p=0.019), social activity (p=0.0022), physical condition indicator (p=0.017) and disease status indicator (p=0.019). On the other hand, internal locus decreased the “mental health” perception (p=0.006) and the disease status index (p=0.018). The clinical relevance of the relationship between QoL and locus of control is very important because it may provide information about the general health status of patients and can also help physicians to choose the best treatment option, mostly considering the significant role of therapy adherence.

What are the Perceived Therapy Needs of Adults Living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta? A Focus Group Study
Tumblr media
 Abstract
Background: Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by fragile bones. Clinical presentation includes multiple health issues which impact on quality of life. There is no published data on what adults with OI perceive their therapy needs to be.
Objective: This study aims to explore the therapy needs of adults with OI.
Methods: A convenience sample of adults were recruited from a multidisciplinary OI clinic. Participants were split into two groups based on their clinical classification. Semi-structured questions were asked focusing on perceived needs for therapy. Thematic analysis identified common themes from the data.
Result: Eleven participants were allocated to two focus groups, ages ranged from 27-68 years. The discussions from both groups elicited similar interconnecting themes of 1) knowledge and expertise, 2) confidence in healthcare services, 3) access to healthcare and community services. There was consensus that therapy was required for adults with OI and treatment was not only for fractures. However, participants valued continuity of care with healthcare professionals who understood OI and where this wasn’t available dissatisfaction with healthcare was identified. Therapy included multiple disciplines reflecting the participants’ wide-ranging needs which reflected a bio-psycho-social framework.
Conclusion: The results reflect the life-long nature of OI and its impact on quality of life. Participants felt a holistic approach to treatment was the most beneficial due to the complexity and variability of OI. Impact statement: This study demonstrates a need for specialist multidisciplinary services to be commissioned for adults with OI.

If they claim they can cure your condition that you have been told is incurable, run. If they claim they cured themselves, run. If they claim they have cured everything from cancer to lupus holistically, run. If they claim you have to buy only supplements from them, run. If they claim they that only thing that will cure is x but x costs tons of money, run. If they refuse to run tests or address your diagnosed conditions before insisting you do an expensive treatment not covered by insurence, run. If they offer a one size fits all treatment/cure, run.
I have been scammed by "holistic" and "naturalistic" people before as a chronically ill person. In fact it was an actual doctor who went to medical school who scammed me for years. So watch out. If it seems too good to be true it probably is.

peds surgeon yuuta??? u cant say things like that i need to jump. the cartoons, the glasses, of course his freaky ass would have a thing for u calling him doctor okkotsu i need to die id wanna tease him sm and be all over him but i cant think of anything if its in a hospital how did the greys anatomy ppl made it work?
the grey’s doctors were FREAKS LMFAOO bc there is not space to be doing all that in the on call rooms…. honestly yuuta is probably too busy to even try anything with you in the hospital 90% of the time… he’s either in surgery or buried in the research library or falling asleep standing up 😭 sometimes you two pass each other in an empty stairwell and have time for a kiss or two, but never more than that (also because yuuta has very little self-restraint when it comes to you… if he allowed himself more than that, then it would be much harder to stop…)
sometimes the two of you will fall asleep in the same on call room. yuuta will page you there and by the time you arrive he’s already half asleep, it’s probably his only nap in the last 24 hours, so you do your best not to wake wake him when you cuddle up next to him. you get a few hours of bliss in his arms before his pager is waking the both of you up, and he’s got to scurry downstairs to the peds floor and in his hurry he doesn’t realize he’s snagged your lab coat instead of his own, and it’s only when he’s haphazardly slipped it on and the arms are too short and the shoulders are too tight that he figures it out. it’s too late by then, because gojo is the attending on this case which means he doesn’t miss anything, which means he’s the first to giggle and tease, poking at your name embroidered above the breast pocket, “oh? i didn’t know the two of you got married already! oh and you took her last name, how noble, yuuta!~”
#anonymous#there's technically two separate doctor aus in my head#one is a gojo-verse where he's not a doctor but reader/kento/yuuji/shoko are in that one little drabble i posted#but in this gojo's anatomy universe they all get to be doctors 🙂‍↕️#some specialities are up in the air but so far peds unit is yuuta (resident) and choso (attending) and they do Not mess around#so very calm and gentle and sweet w the kids but when it comes to the medicine to the surgery to the treatments theyre Mean#they dont play around they dont lack of empathy they wont have it#i think... i think we have to have gojo as a brain surgeon... unfortunately... i think we do......#yuuji is a trauma resident in the other au but i think i'd do the same for him here idk it just fits him 😔#megumi is like..... the radiologist/x-ray tech that gets 40 calls an hour bc everyone wants their scans read in 20 seconds#and hes like no its Not a tumor no i wont run it again and no i dont have time for this 😐#or megumi is actually the parademic who brings in to the ER and hes like well these r drunk college kids... best of luck!#or megumi physical therapist... with his physical therapy dogs.....#nobara ortho resident and shes Scary LMFAOO#old lady comes in for a hip replacement and nobara's got her playlist on full blast having the time of her life hacking away LMFAO#nanami in internal/emergency medicine and hes trying to have his five (5) minutes of peace#and ofc gojo pops up like gnat and hes like nanamin! can i put this patient on blood thiners! and there goes nanamis lunch#yuuta.ask#doctor au

You know what sucks? Taking a six month class to become an EMT, becoming fully certified, the whole deal, just to watch my health plummet into being a barely functional person.
I got certified in May. My body doesn't work enough for me to be confident that I can save someone. It's been two months and it's only gotten worse.
My dream of being an EMT, of saving people, of finally being the person to help is crushed because my body doesn't work like it should, and it's tearing me apart.
I don't know what to do.
