Jodi Sta. I'll rate this movie 6/10 kase medyo cringey rin.

GomBurZa
Tumblr media
I’m not familiar with the life story of Gomburza, aside from being the inspiration for Jose Rizal to write El Filibusterismo. It was probably the reason why I was able to enjoy the movie despite already knowing how it would end.
It was great to be able to know the story of the three priests that I only learned in passing during my school days. It was only through the movie that I found out some interesting facts about the priests, like their having Spanish ancestry, their ages when they died, and the moment that led to their execution. I should have done my research, I know. I should have been more informed about our national heroes, and spending my college years abroad is not an excuse for not knowing these facts. Didn’t you learn it in high school? To be honest, I don’t remember. I was more familiar with the lives of other notable heroes, like Gregorio Del Pilar, Andres Bonifacio, and, of course, Jose Rizal.
Going back to the film, I believe Cedrick Juan was a good choice for the role of Burgos, despite Enchong Dee being a more popular actor. He wasn’t a familiar face, so it wasn’t difficult for me to see him as Fr. Burgos. Unlike Piolo, despite having a remarkable role as Padre Pedro Pelaez, I only saw Piolo Pascual. It also didn’t help that I watched Mallari before watching Gomburza.
Cedrick’s brilliant portrayal of Padre Burgos gave the character a separate identity away from Gomburza. He wasn’t just a martyr priest; he was a hero, at least in the eyes of his fellow priests, parishioners, and his students, who also tried to fight for equal rights for secular priests.
Padre Gomez was the true epitome of a martyr. Being the oldest, he became the solace of the younger priests, consoling them instead of wasting his time proving his innocence. He willingly accepted his fate and entrusted everything to the Lord. He reminded me of Jesus Christ. To be fair, he was already 72. He had lived a fruitful life and endured enough that he was almost ready to leave (it was still not fair to die that way, though). while Fr. Burgos and Fr. Zamora were only in their thirties. While life may not be ideal, no one’s ready to die that young.
I wish I could find more information about the life of Fr. Zamora. The movie didn’t do him justice. Despite the great performance of Enchong Dee, I felt like Fr. Zamora was treated unfairly both by the Spaniards and the scriptwriter.
Fr. Zamora did not even have the opportunity to say his last words. He was already lifeless, even before he was executed. Being accused of something you didn’t do could cause trauma, let alone be sentenced to death for it.
It reminded me of that time when my third grade teachers embarrassed me in front of the other students and teachers. Two of my classmates fought because of a game. It was one of those stupid games where you would hit the person next to you, and he would pass it on to the person next to him. It was popular at the time, so it wasn’t the first time we played it. I was the unlucky person sitting between my two classmates. As I was busy drawing, I was absentmindedly “passing” the message to the other guy until I got annoyed and stopped. I had no idea what happened after I left them, minding my own business. Before I knew it, they were already hitting each other for real. Our class adviser was called, and my history teacher came too (I’m still confused about why she needed to be there), and they felt that someone should take the blame, and they both decided it would be me because the two were already hysterically crying and mentioning my name, putting the blame on me. For goodness’ sake, I didn’t tell those two morons to kill each other. How did it become my fault? They were the ones who were disturbing me in the first place.
I wasn’t given the opportunity to explain my side, and the angry face of my teacher interrogating me made me a coward. I was a pushover and never had the courage to defend myself back then. I just accepted the unfair treatment and moved on. But I still think of it now, still upset and crying for justice. Before that incident, I dreamed of becoming a teacher, but I had already lost trust in teachers, so I decided to take a different path. This memory came back when I watched the life of Fr. Zamora.
Out of the three, I pity Fr. Zamora the most. He was the most innocent among the priests and was included in the execution because of bad luck. Some even questioned if he deserved the recognition. He only became a martyr due to the wrong timing. But a martyr is someone who became a sacrificial lamb for a supposedly greater good. Fr. Zamora is a martyr. He didn’t need to have a motive to be worthy of the recognition. His death symbolizes the injustices during the Spanish era and how unfair life was. He was a victim of the cruelty of the Spanish government, and his death provoked the Filipino people to rebel against the government.
The actor who played Carlos María de la Torre was another great casting. He looked straight out of a history book, and he resembled the real governor-general a lot. His scenes were some of my favorites. He was a beacon of hope to the Filipinos and even to me as a viewer, at least for a short while, only to be let down.
If Fr. Gomez is Jesus Christ, Dela Torre is Pontius Pilate. His actions, though, were understandable. He was still a Spaniard and was put in a difficult spot. There was a limit to one’s generosity, and he wasn’t willing to risk his life for the Filipinos, who themselves were not willing to fight for their own nation. Besides, what can he do? Next to the highest leader of Spain, the King, his power is nothing.
I can’t even talk about Francisco Zaldua, played by Ketchup Eusebio. I want to feel bad for him, being the fall guy of his rich amigos but I would like to think he got his karma.
It was nice to have a glimpse of Paciano’s life, as I only knew him as Jose Rizal’s brother. In the movie, Paciano brought a young Rizal to witness the execution. Although I read somewhere that the scene was merely fiction, Rizal was not present when the priests were executed. The ending showed an already older Rizal writing El Filibusterismo. At least in the movie, it gave a clear perspective on why Rizal dedicated El Filibusterismo to the martyrs and why he spent his life fighting for freedom. He witnessed the cruelty of the Spaniards at a young age. While kids today are watching TikTok videos, he was watching three innocent priests being executed publicly.
Despite being a historical movie, it didn’t have a lot of brutal scenes. Even the execution was brief, which is fine, I guess, as the story was tragic enough.
Gomburza made me realize why the Catholic Church still plays a relevant role in the Philippines today. The Catholic Church is not just a major religion but a part of our history. Although it was used as a weapon to further enslave the indios, the secular priests contributed greatly to the Philippine Revolution.
One of the unforgettable scenes that stuck with me was the conversation between Archbishop Gregorio Martinez and Governor General Rafael Izquierdo. The archbishop said in Spanish,
“Karamihan sa mga indiyo ay hindi magrerebelde. Dahil tayo, ang simbahan, ang nagturo sa kanilang maging masunurin.”
We see history repeating itself everyday. Some churches, not only Catholics, using the Bible to make people submit, while extorting them using emotional manipulation, which is why it’s important to know our history.

Do you have any bl recs that are very realistic with angst? I'm kinda in the mood for sadness lol
BL That is VERY realistic with ANGST
The "very realistic" is the hard part. All BLs take artistic license in pursuit of some kind of cohesive story. And, you probably mostly want Japan and Taiwan.
Let's see what I can do?
Realistic High Angst From Taiwan
Tumblr media
Your Name Engraved Herein (netflix?) - this is the winner, it's an amazing historical piece, painful but beautiful
Also its oft forgotten "sister" piece, Red Balloon , not sure where to find it but very few have seen it, it's worth looking for if this is your thing.
Tumblr media
About Youth, Gaga
My Tooth Your Love, Viki - the premise seems odd but it's very endearing and quite complex
Some shorts to consider :
Faded,
Innocent,
Light,
The Immeasurable
Realistic High Angst from Japan
His (movie is my preference but the series might also fit the bill)
Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese
Tumblr media
Junjou Pure Heart
Candy Color Paradox
Kimi no Koto Dake Mite Itai (I Only Want to Keep Looking at You)
Tumblr media
Life: Love on the Line, Viki (go for the director's cut)
Restart After Come Back Home, Gaga? Viki? (not sure who has this one anymore)
Jack O Frost
Tokyo in April Is... Gaga
Tumblr media
Realistic High Angst From Thailand (yes really)
Tumblr media
Love of Siam
Love Sick
Tumblr media
Dew the Movie (it's your funeral)
Maybe My only 12%?
I Told Sunset About You and the follow up
Tumblr media
Present Perfect and Present Still Perfect (this is an intersting one as far as I know it's the first out gay director prestige piece from Thailand.)
Once in Memory (short)
Moonlight Chicken (review here)
Tumblr media
Only Friends, YT (not quite BL, very queer messy gays, Thailand's answer to Queer as Folk)
I Am Your King 1 (but it's a pulp)
And weirdly you could throw some aspects of Love By Chance in there.
Tumblr media
I still will never recommend Grey Rainbow. Sorry.
You might try tracking down the Saneha stories too.
And a bit from Korea
Although this will always feel a bit staged and arranged. Korea doesn't do much gritty realism, they prefer their pain performative.
Tumblr media
To My Star and (more importantly) To My Star 2
Blueming, Viki
The Eighth Sense, Viki
Tumblr media
The New Employee, Viki
Unintentional Love Story, iQIYI
And 2 Others
Like In The Movies, Pinoy YT
Goodbye Mother, Vietnam netflix maybe?
Tumblr media
Unlike most of my posts none of these recs promise an HEA. You have been warned.
I pretty much fleeced from my prestige BL list (just add angst):
You could always take a risk and try some of these too...
K' that's more an enough to me going on with and I am SURE there are some you haven't seen. I'm equally sure I have missed some since there are ones that often life at the bottoms of my personal list and I have only ever watched one.

Hello.....How are you? Thanks so much for sharing your analysis in your blog. I'm new to BL. I felt really helped in finding your blog. I lived in a country where LGBTQ+ is considered taboo and my own family saw it as something sinful. Until I found mlm fanfics (I know it's a ridicilous reason for why now I'm interested in BL & GL media).
Can I ask, what are your top 7 (or top 5) favorite BL media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series) ? Why do you love them? And your top 5 (or top 3) favorite GL media? Sorry for asking similar question like from someone before (hope you don't mind).
Thanks again, @wen-kexing-apologist 💐🌻🌷
Hello! So sorry this took so long to respond to, I have been really busy and this write up took me a bit of time to get together.
Thanks for reaching out, I’m sorry that your family sees queerness as sinful. I’m sure we come from different countries, and different cultures, but I hope I can give you some comfort by saying I am proud of who I am and I love being queer. I love my queer friends, they are without a doubt the kindest and most caring people I have ever met. And you do not need to apologize at all for asking a similar question to a previous ask. I also hope you know that it is not ridiculous at all to have your eyes opened by mlm fanfiction, I promise.
So my list of (some) of my favorite BLs are:
ITSAY/IPYTM
180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us
Moonlight Chicken
The Eclipse
Our Dining Table
La Pluie
He’s Coming to Me
What Did You Eat Yesterday? (adding this as a special #8 because it is one of my favorites but may be hard to find)
You’re My Sky
Gameboys
Because this is a similar ask to one I recently got I am going to direct you to that for my explanations on 180 Degrees Longitude Passes Through Us (available on Gagaoolala), I Told Sunset About You and I Promise You The Moon (available on Viki), and Moonlight Chicken (available on YouTube) and add three other shows: What Did You Eat Yesterday?, You’re My Sky, and Gameboys.
If you stick around in this fandom long enough you will start to see that Bad Buddy (available on YouTube) is one of most beloved shows on tumblr. I love love love that show, but it is not in my favorites the way these other shows are. However, I would HIGHLY recommend you watch it if you haven’t already. It is incredible, and a very important piece of BL history both for the level of popularity it gained and the way it subverted BL as a genre.
That said, let’s get in to my favorite BLs and why I love them, again in alphabetical order:
Gameboys
(Pinoy BL- Season 1: Available on YouTube or Netflix, Season 2: Available on Gagaoolala in Asia or with a VPN that can make it seem like you are in Asia)
Contains Themes of: Quarantine, COVID, death, queer character being outed against their will
Tumblr media
I literally just finished the first season of this show today, but have to thank @bengiyo for telling me this is what I should watch next because I absolutely loved it. It is the story of two boys, stuck in quarantine in the Phillipines during the COVID pandemic that meet over an online game and fall in love. I agree with Ben that this is an incredibly well handled pandemic story, the actors are fantastic, their chemistry is believable and natural, and I appreciate that they let these boys be horny for each other. I loved watching the highs and lows of their blossoming relationship and I am so looking forward to watching Season 2 when they are together in person and seeing if and how that changes their dynamic.
He’s Coming to Me
(Thai BL- Available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: death of a teenager (related to heart problems), murder
Tumblr media
I talked about this show in one of my tag games as my pick for most underrated series in Thai QL. Which I stand by because this show did not have the distribution it should have due to fan interference because they were upset about Singto being moved from a match up with Krist to instead star opposite Ohm.
This is a show that I have labeled as By, For, and About Queer people. This is an Aof Noppharnach piece that is just absolutely beautiful in the way it explores the growing realization about your own queerness as Ohm’s character (Thun) starts to develop feelings for Singto’s character (Med). I love the additional layer to this show that comes with Med being a ghost who can only be seen by Thun, and how we don’t just get an explicitly queer character in an explicitly queer relationship, but that we also get a metaphor for queerness in the fact that Thun has to keep himself and his abilities private. When he hangs out with Med in public, no one can see him, and Thun often ends up talking to air, which results in people constantly staring at him in confusion, concern, or disgust. This show will remind you that Ohm has always been The Actor of All Time, the way his voice creaks in this show still haunts me to this day. I liked the mystery element in this show, I loved the rooftop confessions and the coming out scene. I loved all the ways this show was just so so so queer. Now that it has been released to the general public, I think every person who watches Thai BL should watch this show.
La Pluie
(Thai BL- Available on IQIYI)
Contains Themes of: lying to a romantic partner
Tumblr media
God this show is an incredible, brilliant, perfectly executed subversion of the soulmates trope. A theme I am generally sensing in the content I am sharing is that queer characters are allowed to be flawed human beings. Tai needs to learn how to use his words, Patts is perfect but does have a temper that he is managing extremely well, Tien is perfect but does constantly undermine and underplay his own emotions to support the other people in his life, Lomfon is rude. This show has a lot of very smart things to say, and allows its characters to both experience desire, and sexual frustration, it uses giving sexual pleasure as a way for a character to maintain control over new forms of intimacy. Myself and my fellow clowns on this website (especially @bengiyo and @lurkingshan) have fought for this show tooth and nail for weeks upon weeks to make sure that as many people as possible were watching this absolutely beautiful show.
Our Dining Table
(Japanese BL- Available on Gagaoolala)
Contains Themes of: death, child neglect, grief
Tumblr media
This is a very short, very sweet, wonderful spot of comfort and warmth. Its main themes are found family and navigating grief. It has the cutest little boy in the world who is just a bouncing ball of sunshine, and he and this show won my entire heart. I love this show for what it says about family, about care and love, sacrifice and healing. Even for the parts of the show that center around pain, this show is just so full of joy. I loved watching Yutaka open up, loved watching Minoru have a chance to relax, I loved Ueda-san getting to watch his son fall in love to become happier by way of existing around his sons’ happiness. I love that Minoru is very much an older brother to Tane, not a parent, despite how much care he gives him, and I love that Yutaka and Tane are genuinely friends.
The Eclipse
(Thai BL- Available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: threats against protestors (including cars rolling in to crowds), suicide, grief, internalized homophobia, homophobia, authoritarianism, emotional manipulation, thoughts of suicide, queer character being outed against their will
Tumblr media
This is absolutely one of my favorite BLs, beyond the fact that the acting is incredible, the characters are allowed to be very flawed, very complex, and very morally gray the story itself is incredibly layered and is a huge social commentary on rebelling against authoritarianism, the ways in which identities and oppression are leveraged against marginalized people to get them to commit heinous acts against the people they should be standing with and not against. This show touches on so many different things: justice, hypocrisy, manipulation, love, fear, internalized homophobia, rebellion, activism. This show gave me both my favorite war criminal and his rat bastard boyfriend. It has some of my favorite kisses and favorite crying scenes. And it introduced me to the powerhouse duo of First and Khaotung.
What Did You Eat Yesterday?
(I am honestly not sure where you can find this easily, outside of @kinounaniresource. there is one season, a special, and a movie. There is a Season 2 on the way, and I am also not sure when it is going to be released or if it is going to be released on any particular platform)
Contains Themes of: internalized homophobia, homophobia, character with history of child abuse
Tumblr media
I am honestly not sure if this technically qualifies as a BL, but it is certainly a show that centers around an already established, older gay couple. This is a story about a couple staying together, and there is an undercurrent of long carried pain that is tucked so neatly between the layers of cooking, and eating, and love for one another. I do not really know how to explain this show beyond it just being one of the best things out there. We are so so lacking in elder queer content, honestly this is the only show I have seen out of 60+ QLs I have watched in the last year that has a main queer couple over the age of probably 25. I love the dynamic between Shiro and Kenji so much because who doesn’t love couples comprised of one puppy dog of a man and one man with the energy of a very annoyed cat?
You’re My Sky
(Thai BL- available on Viki)
Contains Themes of: betrayal, cheating, sports related injury
Tumblr media
This show has some of the most beautiful, saturated coloring of any show I have ever seen, the influence of I Told Sunset About You is incredibly clear (which makes sense because a screenwriter and director on You’re My Sky was a Screenwriter on ITSAY/IPYTM). I am not a huge sports person, but I do love a sports drama, and this one does a stellar job with the way it shoots it’s basketball games. It has Suar, who I was first introduced to as Tien in La Pluie as the main character and he is just SO. GOOD. This dude has been in three shows TOTAL and he just absolutely DEMOLISHES this role, and his role in La Pluie. Seriously, even if you could not give two shits about basketball (as a sport I do not, in this show I care very much) you should watch this show just to see Suar run a masterclass in acting.
Girl Loves
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of girl love shows that exist, the only one I have even seen coming out of Asia is GAP the series (a handful more exist, but they either seem to not be popular and/or are hard to access). It is an unfortunate reality that we are still fighting for more WLW content, especially GL content where the romance is the main and central plot. So, I don’t have a strong list to give you, because what does exist is limited and often gets canceled, but I will give you what information I do have:
Carmilla
GAP the Series
Carmilla
(Canada- Available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: student disappearances, death, undeath
Tumblr media
This is an 8 year old Western webseries based on the book of the same name. I watched this around the time it came out and loved it a lot. There are a couple seasons and a movie, all of it is really really good, and was some of the earliest queer representation I had, including having the first non-binary character I had ever seen on screen (does not mean there weren’t others, this is just the first one that I found). This is a webseries so it takes place almost exclusively in one room.
GAP the Series
(Thai GL- Available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: severe homophobia, suicide, emotional abuse, death of a sibling
Tumblr media
GAP was fun, it started out really strong, but it did lose me a little bit at the end. But that is mostly because I am not the biggest fan of boss and employee stories where an equal power balance is not established. I think it s a really solid attempt at kickstarting GL into an industry rather than just an occasional one off. This is required viewing in my opinion because of how it was funded, and because it has some of the highest view rates out there for queer Thai shows, and really helped prove that GLs were stories that people really really wanted to see (read: production companies started to realize they could make a lot of money).
I can offer you a suggestion from other people:
She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat
(Japanese GL- I have not seen this yet and I am not sure where you can find this show. But I do know that everyone who has seen it loves it, and I plan to watch it soon. A Season 2 was announced recently but is not out yet)
Non GL shows that either have a lesbian or bisexual character and/or have a GL pairing as a side plot:
Bad Buddy (the second couple, but still has limited screen time)
Secret Crush on You (very minor couple, but has been in a relationship from the beginning)
La Pluie (A very small part of the story)
Lovely Writer (I have not seen this show, I do not know exactly what the plot is, or what purpose this character serves, but I know there is a bisexual character named Tiffy, who won the BL Bisexual Swag
The Warp Effect (one of the shows with a pretty strong lesbian couple)
Gameboys and Pearl Next Door
A book I really love with a WLW couple in it and a gay character is The Priory of the Orange Tree
GMMTV has started filming their first GL, which we hope will air late this year (or maybe early next year), it’s called 23.5 Degrees and I am very much looking forward to it!
Queer Shows
I’ll give you some bonus suggestions that are very queer shows, but aren’t defined as BL or GL
The Warp Effect
Gay OK Bangkok
3 Will Be Free
The Owl House
Deadend Paranormal Park
The Warp Effect
(Thai- available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: abortion, sexual assault, physical assault, internalized homophobia, transphobia, religious trauma, bodyshaming, slut shaming, kink shaming, workplace sexual harassment, homophobia
Tumblr media
If it is queer and from Thailand and I love it, odds are extremely high that Jojo Tichakorn wrote and directed it. Despite some very heavy themes this was a very very fun watch, it is one of the most kink positive, sex positive, and queer shows that I have seen. I have a friend who is a sex educator and I want them to watch this show for it’s public speech announcements about getting HPV vaccines and how pelvic exams work. This is not a show I can explain super well, but it is one that I highly recommend, and if you are planning on watching Only Friends, then it is something I consider a required viewing.
Gay OK Bangkok
(Thai- available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: cheating, HIV
Tumblr media
This is a very real look at the existence of gay men in Bangkok, I love it so much. This is a pair up between Jojo and Aof, two of my favorite directors. It is not a feel good show, it is an honest one. I think everyone should watch it.
3 Will Be Free
(Thai- available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: cheating, manslaughter, murder, murder of a spouse, kidnapping, domestic abuse, sexual assault, strangulation, transphobia, death, gun violence
Tumblr media
Once again, a Jojo show, and once again, despite the list of themes within the show, a very fun watch. This is one of, if not the only GMMTV show with a throuple, and is honestly very hilarious by way of three idiots on the run from the mafia, accidentally through mostly shit dumb luck and the fact that everyone is stupid, taking down a criminal empire.
The Owl House
(United States- available on Disney+, season 3 available on YouTube)
Contains Themes of: white supremacy, child abuse, child neglect, heavy trauma, mind and body control, death, possible world destruction
Tumblr media
This is an animated show that I love dearly and one I find incredibly important for the next generation of queer people to see. The main character is neurodivergent, she is bisexual and gets a girlfriend, there is a non-binary side character, and there is also just a lot of casual queer representation. This show has a lot to say, and says it well, it is adorable and heartbreaking and everything in between and the fact that it got canceled is honestly a tragedy.
Dead End: Paranormal Park
(United States- available on Netflix)
Contains Themes of: possession, murder, death, undeath, paranormal activity, religious infighting, amnesia, animal death, kidnapping, child death, implied transphobia
Tumblr media
This is also an animated show that I love dearly and one I find incredibly important for the next generation of queer people to see. The main character is trans, the other main character is neurodivergent and bisexual, there is a lot of casual queer representation. Like The Owl House this show has a lot to say, and says it well, it is adorable and heartbreaking and everything in between and the fact that it got canceled is also a tragedy.
[I realize for The Owl House and Deadend Paranormal Park that my descriptions are very similar, but I cannot stress enough that these two shows have very different premises and tell very different stories. They are just animated shows that are able to contain a lot more queer representation that the stories that came before them, because of the stories that came before them]

Ayun. Ganun na nga ang nangyari kagabi.
Pakahusay, Kuya Paolo and Ate Alex.🙌🏻💘 (wow close na kami bucket buhh☺️) A+ for chemistry! Hindi siya yung cheesy and super pakilig na movie, it’s so much more than that. With the right amount of wit for laughs, preparing you for a major plot twist. They dug deep and before you know it, you already fell hard. Tuwalya, hindi handkerchief. Kitchen tissue, wag facial tissue, ‘di rin kasya isang rolyo kahit 2 o 3-ply pa yan.🤣

TL;DR warning: TFATWS Ep. 6 / Finale There’s a lot to unpack in this series finale, and I sure as hell am not the expert to do this, but I thought I’d highlight some particular issues I have. Much of this, admittedly, will be coming from the high character tenors of the previous episodes, whereas this episode is really where the “MCU kind of movie denouement” kicks in. If you can call/criticize something as “Disney formula” writing, this might be it. Did it hamper/dampen my enjoyment of this series? Not THAT much, but it really stands out and suggests it could have been better. So let me do a few numbers. 1. PRO: A very acceptable execution of selling not only Sam’s first outing as ‘Captain America’, not only the affirmation of Bucky Barnes’ commitment to heroism, but the apotheosis long-denied to Isaiah Bradley. I’m getting the impression much of the gushing here in Tumblr will be focusing on that--and to an extent, I am in agreement.  their characters were very well fleshed out and to be honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way. There may be still other things I would recommend as a better laid-out recognition for Isaiah (something more faithful to the Truth comic miniseries), but that’s a minor quibble compared to the others below.
2. CON: Falling into the trap of a “GOT-layout” series ending Ok, that description might be too harsh. After all, point # 1 is near perfect.
However, and this is a very big HOWEVER... A really good show does not rely solely on giving your main characters the best ending possible. Their supporting cast deserves at least a fair amount of character development (understandable motivations, a good appreciation of their character arcs, more moments which make you empathize with them especially if you are trying to experiment with moral ambiguity on their characters). The fact that the action sequence ate up more than half of the final episode’s near-50 minute runtime really prevented any further character development moments. How, to some extent, this became insufficient with Karli Morgenthau and John Walker become really apparent in the end.  3. CON: Under-served Character Denouements Karli and the Flag-Smashers, in practice, were basically given the “Killmonger” treatment: they’ll have to die, but the validity of their moral argument will be recognized. As someone with a very limited set of fandoms I follow, the only other place I’ve seen this done is Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. The protagonist cast was left to die, but the tragedy of their situation led their world to improve things for the better. (For those familiar with this fandom, many will understand that this did not go down well.) Compare this, in turn, to how Breaking Bad gives even the supporting cast and side-characters understandable character endings.
The reason of complaint here, being, that this kind of story flow robs these characters of agency not only in their tragedy--but also how they choose to go out. Sympathetic tragic characters, to an extent, are at least given some dignity in how they go out. The fact that Karli and the Flag-Smashers are practically disposed of by a) Sharon, now fully revealed as the criminal Power-Broker and b) Zemo, whose butler is no less capable in extreme action even while he was in prison further highlights how they are basically reduced into ‘plot elements’, not a fully-realized group/faction of people.
John Walker, for his part, is also given very little to do (and indeed, what little he was able to do in the entire fight sequence is laughable). Even his one spark of “good choice” (seeking to save the falling vehicle’s occupants), even if he failed, was ultimately overshadowed by Sam’s more flamboyant rescue. One might be able to make argument, perhaps, that that is the point: Walker’s arc in this episode, perhaps, is to finally learn why exactly he can’t become Captain America: because he remains primarily a soldier, and only good at that. Witnessing Sam arguing and pontificating in front of the cameras, perhaps, is what hammers it home to him--and why perhaps his last scene in the series is him accepting his new role as U.S. Agent. If his world is going to be small and he is going to be pigeonholed into what he is good at, so be it. If he can’t be Captain America (now that he knows why exactly that symbol is powerful, and what is required of it), he’ll find his way with people who will let him be what he can be. Notice, however, how even between these two underserved characters, John Walker has a more understandable progression. I don’t think I’ll really be able to fault ‘left-wing’ viewers of the show who will be left dissatisfied by this ending (especially those who are sympathetic to the Flag-Smashers’ demands--especially as to some extent (due to my own line of work and leanings, I’m kind of one of those). And then there’s the reveal of Sharon as the Power-Broker--its own can of worms, but I’ll fold it in the next item. 4. MIXED BAG: How the show’s social layout closes
The fact that the MCU’s undercurrent politics remains to be “institutions are bad, mob/grassroots action will always be misguided, let media-chosen/private individuals and orgs show you the ‘right way’ of doing things”--it isn’t really as helpful as it could be. The show basically ends with Sam and Bucky’s individual arcs and moral world-views affirmed. It is definitely a happy ending for them. It is, however, pretty difficult to swallow that it ends well for them when the bigger picture is left unaddressed.  (For those who may be interested in this line of critique, this video essay, “Imagining the Tyrant” by Kyle Kallgren / Brows Held High / oancitizen should be helpful.)
Nowhere is this better illustrated than in 2 instances: the setting of Walker’s rechristening as U.S. Agent, and Sharon’s “pardon” scene--now that we know she is in fact the Power Broker. Both events happen in the U.S. Senate Committee hearing hall--basically making the statement that even with a new Captain America that is more ‘home-grown’ and closer to the ground and common people (even as he literally flies high), the institutions of the U.S. government is still as impervious and clueless to its corruption and enabling of crime and injustice. Criminal elements like Valentina de Fontaine and the Power Broker foster the underground economy with impunity, and the U.S. government allows them to for a number of unbuilt/unestablished reasons.
It’s a valid/backed-up argument to make, and with historical/real life basis at that, but this is the kind of plot development difficult to credibly sell within a 6-episode miniseries already crammed with character arcs--and it shows. Compare this, for example, with how the Netflix series The Punisher built throughout its Season 1 run how exactly can black market profiteering grow under the CIA in a believable way. There, you see exactly what needs to happen for a previously-established upstanding character living in a grey environment to turn grey--even full on black (be it Frank Castle/the Punisher himself, Dinah Madani, or even Billy Russo). I’d want to chalk this up to the possibility of merging/reintroducing that world--and by god, imagine Jon Bernthal’s Punisher returning in this kind of gray area--interacting with Captain America AND the Winter Soldier, as this series is now likely to be titled--should be very interesting.
---- These are the top points in my head after my first watch of this finale. I may be rewatching this again--who knows if I get to come back. Still, it’s been a pretty meaningful ride. P.S. I should probably admit to my Filipino background here again, but it’s hilarious how the closing shot of this series (Sam and Bucky having a party with their family/community near the Louisiana seaside) is basically how mosts 80′s/90′s era Filipino action and comedy films end (either a beach party or a wedding/outing near a beach/swimming pool). The presence of Pinoy shout-outs in this series (”Amatz” and “Isang Tao, Isang Mundo”) really emphasize how this might not be an accident.

Pinoy movie 001 // Ngayon Kaya
Here's the plot (wikipedia):
Five years after going their separate ways, close friends Harold and AM unexpectedly reunite after arriving late at the wedding of their friends, Justin and Charmaigne. Old feelings resurface as the two reflect on their almost decade-long friendship, pretend to live the lives taken away by their clashing dreams and obligations, and lament their many "what could have beens." Will they get it right this time around, or will they have to go on wondering what life would've been like if they didn't let their chance pass them by a second time?
﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏
So ito ang masasabi ko
ANG GANDA
ANG SAKIT
NAKAKAPANGHINAYANG
Story:
Indie film ba ito? Pang indie film kase yung story kase ang ganda talaga. Yung tipong may hugot, parang "boring" pero deep yung atake.
Cinematography:
Isa to sa mga pinoy films na naganda ako sa cinematography like ang ganda lang talaga. Yung color grading ang ganda rin. Kung e rarate ko ito i'll give this 9/10
I'll give you guys snippets from the film:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Music:
Ang ganda rin ng choice of music nila nagkataon pa talaga na trending yung jopay by mayonnaise these days. Pero di ko masyadong na appreciate yung pagkanta ni paulo like i'm sorry 😭 pero sige pwede na 😅
Actors:
Janine gutierrez ang galing mo as always.
Realization after watching the movie:
● what if? — kung gusto mo talaga na wala kang pagsisihan, take a risk.
● may nabasa ako na "don't expect what you can't communicate"; tama naman.
‼️ SPOILER ALERT ‼️
Pero maiba ako, diba medyo confusing yung last part? Do the right thing harold. Dami mo ng sinaktan 😂✌🏻 pero seriously mas mabuti talaga na tumuloy si harold sa canada and break up with his fiance and work on himself, mag move on. Ito yung ultimate lesson from the film na "pag di pa tayo tapos sa past natin, wag muna mag commit sa iba."

What BL shows would you reccomend to a novice? I've never watched one before.
Oh. My. God. This is like a dream come true anon. I’ve been waiting for this question for what feels like my whole life. As someone who has seen pretty much ALL the BLs, let me give you some foundational BLs to check out:
- Love Sick 🇹🇭 (season 1 on Netflix and YouTube, season 2 on YouTube and Dailymotion and other streaming platforms)- While this is one of the original BLs I can actually be a little hard to get into. It’s one of my personal favorites and it super authentic to the queer coming of age experience. But it’s also insanely long and full of tropes like Toxic Girlfriend that are really off putting to some. But honestly, it has so many more positives than negatives. If you can make it through the first really weird episode, you’re set. Some people like to skip through the side plots and that’s totally fine. I did the first watch through too.
- SOTUS 🇹🇭 (season 1 on Netflix and YouTube, season 2 on YouTube, Our Skyy special episode on YouTube) - This is a super easy watch and it a great intro to BL. It also is the source of a dozen repeated BL tropes. I recently (as in literally yesterday) got my friend to finally watch this one. She is now obsessed. She’s seen a bunch of other BLs but put this off for some reason and now she’s a complete convert. The special thing about SOTUS is that is avoids the Toxic Girlfriend trope and actually passes the Bechdel Test.
- 2gether 🇹🇭 (season 1 and Still2Gether special on YouTube and on Netflix in some markets) - this is an excellent starter BL for those wanting something recent. The original series definitely had mixed reviews but with the addition of the 5 episode special from Director P’Aof, King of BL, 2gether was lifted from the ranks of decent to Excellent.
- Gameboys 🇵🇭 (season 1 on YouTube and Netflix, season 2 TBD) - This was the Pinoy BL that made everyone pivot toward the Philippines last summer. They really said what if we made BL actually queer and we all said YES PLEASE. So if you’re into BL because you want to see queer stories, this is a great place to start. Follow it up with the absolute masterpiece Gaya Sa Pelikula (Like in the Movies) and go down the rabbit hole of queer pinoy cinema.
- Where Your Eyes Linger 🇰🇷 (1 short season on Viki - watch the series not the movie version) - This came out last year and blew the lid off Korean BL. It was such a phenomenon and it makes me sad that people don’t seem to talk about it much anymore. It was a revelation. If you’re someone who loves kdramas and Korean filmmaking, this is an excellent place to start with Korean BL.
- Cherry Magic 🇯🇵 (1 season on idrk where exactly most of us watched on irozukusubs but I think you can find official links now) - Japan made everyone drop what they were doing and absorbed so much of our attention at the end of 2020. This show developed a devoted and passionate fan base that persists still. With representation of a variety of queer spectrum characters, a setting outside a university, and an insanely healthy representation of a queer relationship we were all smitten from the first episode. This cracked a lot of people’s #1 BLs spots.
Personal Favs:
- Until We Meet Again 🇹🇭 (series is on youtube, a whole series of the side couple should be coming this year) - Only watch if you’re ok with suicide triggers. This is the pinnacle of soulmate tropes and no matter what I can’t move on from this series. It’s also groundbreaking in that it’s one of the only BLs to star out gay actors. This is often held up as most people’s favorites of all time (mine included).
- History 3: Trapped 🇹🇼 (I think it’s on viki) - Is this everyone’s favorite history series? I feel like it may be. Mafia boss falls in love with the cop who is after him. *chefs kiss* The side couple is perfection too. Also Taiwan isn’t as shy about pda if ya know what I mean 😉
- I Told Sunset About You 🇹🇭 (season 1 is somewhere on the internet if you’re willing to look, season 2 coming in may) - Do you love award winning indie cinema? This is the one for you. Objectively probably the best BL ever made.
Almost BL/Kinda BL
- Great Men Academy 🇹🇭 (do a google search for episodes with subs, don’t use dramac**l bc the subs are shit) - Such a great and unique story. While this story is about a girl whose body is transformed into a boy, it has strong trans metaphors and the boy who falls for her goes through the whole bi-panic and acceptance that is key to many BLs.
- Mr. Queen 🇰🇷 (on viki) - not a BL but might as well be one. It’s about a womanizing man who gets sent back in time into the body of a queen-to-be and falls in love with the king. Prepare for a non-BL ending. But the love is real. It’s a good place to being if you’re not sure about you’re comfort level with queer cinema yet.
I have a million and 1 more recommendations but these are a few to start with. If you want more recs, please please come on back for more.

First of all I want to appreciate your blog and for putting all the effort in explaining different bls. I have found so many good shows through your blog 💗
Can I request a list of adult bls with meaningful themes? Not too pg rated like kinnporche but towards a softer side like old fashion cupcake. I am an adult myself and can't seem to relate much to high school dramas. So I would love to watch more mature bl series if you have any recs. Thank you!!
adult bls with meaningful themes & soft
Hi & thank you!
Here is an older post, but that means it might have some you've not seen before.
Your "adult" criteria is interesting because BL is called "Boy's Love" for a reason. Even if the characters are adults they often don't act that way, or are going though things we associated with high school and college (like first love). Still...
Tumblr media
My top 15 that fit your criteria are:
example: Old Fashion Cupcake
A Tale of Thousand Stars (Thai YT)
My Ride (Thai iQIYI & YT)
Our Dining Table (Japan Gaga)
The New Employee (Korea Viki)
Unintentional Love Story (Korea iQIYI)
My Tooth Your Love (Taiwan Viki)
Wish You: Your Melody in My Heart (Korea Viki & Netflix)
Restart After Come Back Home (Japan Gaga? grey?)
DNA Says Love You (Taiwan Gaga) - first half requires patience but it's worth it
Like In The Movies (Pinoy YouTube)
You Make Me Dance (Korea Viki)
Just Friends? (Korea Gaga)
All the Liquors (Korea Viki)
Ocean Likes Me (Korea Viki)
Happy Merry Ending (Korea Viki)
BL sides: Love is Science?
Yes but x-rated and/or not so soft: Bed Friend, Moonlight Chicken, Long Time No See
shorts: Some More
I think there are a few under-appreciated gems in here that really might resonate with you. My Ride is re-airing on YouTube right now and Like in the Movies (Pinoy) is also available there. Both are a little gritty and thoughtfully slow, but ultimately worth your time if you have patience for something longer than Japan churns out. If you want to go shorter, stick with the Japanese and Korean ones.
Most of these explore themes of loneliness, acceptance, and found family - as, indeed, do most queer romances.
Tumblr media
I loved it but I'm not sure about the "meaningful themes" bit but they grown ups with grown up issues...
Our Dating Sim
To My Star
See You After Quarantine?
Be Loved In House: I Do
Cherry Magic
Love Tractor
HIStory 3: Trapped
Manner of Death
Triage
What Zabb Man!
Nobleman Ryu's Wedding
Behind Cut
Candy Color Paradox
Choco Milk Shake
Happy Ending Romance
Mr Cinderella
Oh! Boarding House
Plus and Minus
Roommates of Poongduck 304
The Tasty Florida
Tinted With You
Vice Versa
Tumblr media
Despite it being Uni I still think you might like it:
The Eighth Sense
Life: Love on the Line (follows characters throughout their lives, this is Japan and seriously atmospheric so, of course, it's meaningful)

Eerie: Movie Review
Eerie: Movie Review EXCERPT: Eerie felt like a waste of time and good opportunity, to be completely honest. #Eerie #EerieonNetflix #Netflix
Tumblr media
If I can share a secret about how to enjoy ABS-CBN Film’s horror offering Eerie, it would be encapsulated in just three words — Don’t Watch It. For all the hype that surrounded this film by tapping award winning indie director Mikhail Red, this film was nothing short of disappointing.
Synopsis:Pat (Bea Alonzo) is the guidance counselor of an exclusive all-girls’ Catholic school. Burdened by the…

And more thoughts on Trese with the voice-acting news (bonus thoughts on accents and stuff)
-  Re: Liza Soberano as the Tagalog voice for Alexandra Trese, I’ve seen people say her Tagalog is too ‘elite’-sounding for the part, but idk, she sounds okay to me? Granted I have only seen her in one movie, but she sounds fine.
Now if people are just disappointed are that they got a very popular mainstream actress instead of one of the professional Filipino VAs, then I get it.
-Re: Shay Mitchell as the English voice for Alexandra Trese, I do very much appreciate that they cast someone of Pinoy heritage!
But…I was really hoping they’d get someone who can, well, speak English in a Filipino accent, not in a Western accent. The original comics are set in Metro Manila and have the characters speaking in English, so when I imagine Alexandra and the other characters speaking, it’s like this (that’s Ian Pangilinan and Paolo Pangilinan in an interview for Gaya sa Pelikula).Though of course with characters like Datu Talagbusao  and Datu Gantes, I assume they speak either Tagalog or one of the (many, many) local languages of the Philippines and what we see in the speech bubbles is the for-the-reader “translation.”
I guess this is really just more about my personal grievances with how we treat accents than about the actors. Honestly, when we grow up with English as a second language, sometimes we get taught that we should “Westernize” our accents while speaking it, and um...why should we? Why twist our tongues? And so,  I feel like if they had cast a Pinoy voice actor who can speak English in their own Filipino accent (and there are also many, many Filipino accents!) it might have carried a message of: hey, we can speak this foreign language well while still sounding like ourselves, and it’s on a Netflix show that people around the world can watch!
- That said, I wish both ladies well of course, and I’m crossing my fingers that they do a good job with Alex.
-Netflix hasn’t said yet who he’s playing, but Darren Criss is totally the English voice of Basilio and/or Crispin (not sure if usually cast one person for twins in voice acting ), right? At the very least, I’m betting Basilio because from what I remember, he tends to sing a lot when in flirting mode (or maybe that’s just my headcanon, lol). Either way, if they cast such a popular actor, it’s for a main role.
-I’ve never heard of Carlos Alazraqui, but based on his age, pretty sure he’s Captain Guerrero.
-Twitter tells me Steve Blum is also in the English cast. Glad they got at least one high profile voice actor there! He’s Maliksi, maybe? Or papa Anton Trese, or one of the major warlords.
