when you try to flirt with the weird guy from the cabin in the woods but he’s so depressed that he doesn’t even look at you while you’re talking to him
panels from a scrapped first meet concept (ended up changing how they actually meet) but i love how they look aka: i spent so much fucking time drawing them that i couldn’t just not show y’all
they do still first “meet” when stan does his first tour and takes ford’s identity, but they don’t actually meet-meet until about a week later
she worked as a janitor at dusk 2 dawn at the time and would deliver groceries to the actual ford when he stopped doing his weekly restock (he helped her clean up a spill once so she decided she owed him her life) so they have their first one-on-one convo when she goes to drop the groceries off and stan invites her in to look around as a thank-you when he recognizes her from the tour, and she agrees cause she was originally very curious about why ford never let her into his cabin before when dropping off groceries and then became even MORE curious when he just. randomly charges everyone to come take a tour of the place

as we approach the start of a new semester i'm sending all the compassion and empathy in the world to students who struggle with procrastination and what I affectionately like to call the Shame Monster that goes along with it. it sucks to always be treading water and feeling like a fraud to yourself and others, especially when it's something you truly care about. if you're always thinking "why can everyone else be responsible and organized but not me," your brain is overgeneralizing. you're not the only person to experience being overwhelmed and stuck. and even IF everyone else balanced their life perfectly, that wouldn't make you a bad person for struggling. if you care about something but keep avoiding it and don't understand why, there is probably more going than you realize. if your physical and mental health are being neglected, then you're never going to be able to accomplish what you want to do because you don't have any gas in the tank. it took me crashing and failing last semester for me to finally admit to myself that i was suffering from some SERIOUS burnout. i had this whole plan for research i was going to do over the summer and all these opportunities i wanted to take advantage of that i couldn't do because i was neglecting to take care of myself. the worst thing my anxious brain told me could ever happen did happen and i'm still alive. i hope that doesn't happen to you, but know you can recover and come back better. also: it's okay to stop wanting what you thought you wanted, or to take a different path than the one you were "supposed" to. don't do things because you think other people expect you to, or because you think it's too late to change your mind. that isn't sustainable. your college experience is for YOU, not for other people. you can do this!

Meeting older queer people is such a cathartic experience. I was at a church event on my campus and described how being a lesbian affected my religious beliefs and this older woman pulled me aside and came out to me as a trans woman. She was so excited to talk about our shared experience as queer people in a religious space and it was one of the greatest moments in my life of being an out lesbian. I had never even thought about living past 25 and here was this queer woman in her late sixties, a gynecologist, an artist, an author, and married to a woman who she married pre-transition and stuck with her whole life. It just reminded me that life can be beautiful and rewarding if you remember to stick around long enough.

IMO the decision to have Tyler not kill anyone really detracts from the messaging of the movie. ik it's probably due to Fincher's desires to keep the movie more lighthearted and comedic (we see this in other ways as well - marla's mom is cut out and Tyler isn't trying to kill himself at the end)but a lot of the horror of Project Mayhem is lost in translation.
In the book, we know Project Mayhem + Tyler/narrator has killed several people (the mayor's special envoy on recycling, the jawbones in the garden, narrator's boss, murder mystery party guy) as well as castrating them and it's effective in making the audience understand that this misanthropic anarchic terrorist group is a BAD THING. neither narrator nor the reader know why these people were killed, but see their bones being used as fertilizer for soap ingredients (read: death/human sacrifices facilitates the growth of project mayhem; awesome and badass metaphor!)
In the movie, Project Mayhem is pretty neutered. the most we see them do is their "homework assignments" which only amounts to vandalism instead of like. murder. and they only threaten to castrate people instead of going through with it (as far as we see). And Tyler emphasizes that there's no one in the credit card companies they're in. he doesn't even try to kill himself. Bob getting killed is framed as a consequence of Project Mayhem, but I think it's not as effective as Project Mayhem killing people since the actual killer is an opponent of PM instead of being part of it.
I think this is one of the reasons why some people (who've usually only watched the movie) idolize/think so highly of Tyler Durden. his extremism isn't shown to have the debilitating consequences it has in the book. fincher relies too much on Bob's death to demonstrate to the audience that Tyler's ideology and project mayhem is ultimately harmful and useless, and I really think being more faithful to the book in this regard would have elevated the movie.
