Is there any info on Jaybird - the swanky alpha gen harpy? They look interesting (and really pretty too)

Jaybird was the first successful harpy (aka the first one whose embryo was predicted to survive birth). They were more of a proof of concept than most other modified humans of the era - the idea was a pitch for anti genetic bottlenecking technology which might put Jaybird's designer - Callum - in the running for head of Genetic Innovations at Atom. So the fact of their birth was enough to satisfy the requirements - no need for additional testing, like the aquatics, so Jaybird and their later-born compatriots had relatively comfortable lives in an aviary on the roof of the settlement. They were not, however, allowed comparable freedom to unaltered humans and many had not truly learned to fly during the vital developmental window of their youth, as the aviary didn't really permit long flights. Jaybird was always Callum's favourite and represented, to him, the correct way to make genetic modifications; graceful, non threatening, and aesthetically pleasing.

When Ishmael attempted to start a revolution, Jaybird and the early harpies originally did not want to join. They knew that the treatment of harpies was kinder than the treatment of aquatics and didn't want to lose that position of relative privilege. Sure they had a lot to gain from a revolution, but a lot to lose, too, if it went badly. They spoke amongst themselves, then sent out a representative back to Ishmael's people with a message of "good luck, but do it without us". But once the news that Callum's bid to take over the genetic innovations division didn't work, suddenly those harpies were looking veryyyyy superfluous, and the resources - space, food, labour - spent on them could probably be spent elsewhere. faced now with potential extermination (as all genetic projects funded by Atom are the intellectual property of Atom, once it shelves an engineering program, all copies cannot be allowed to roam free, and must be retired), the harpies decided that yeah they should probably switch sides after all

I like to imagine Gordon getting increasingly flustered at the vortigaunts' nonstop praises. Just like, face slightly going pink, rubs the back of his neck and looks away all "aw, shucks".

Like, yes, Gordon Freeman is an unstoppable force of nature, but he's also like. Just a guy. He's a nerd and probably a little overwhelmed with suddenly being this Big Hero™️ that everyone is in awe over.

He's the guy who single-handedly WRECKED the Citadel with nothing but the gravity gun, destroying everything and/or one in his path, but like. They kidnapped his friends. NOBODY touches his friends without feeling the wrath of ten thousand supernovas.

But he's also the guy who fiddles with stuff in his friends' labs like a kid in a candy store. He's a man of multitudes.
