Elder Scrolls is fascinating to me because the vast majority of the background information of the setting is very obviously written by people with an admirably clear-eyed understanding of how history is mainly just groups genociding the shit out of each other before constructing post-hoc rationalizations of why that was a cool and good thing to do, if they bother justifying anything beyond the level of Might Makes Right. SO! Fairies feed on emotions, and different courts have different diets! The most common one is "desire". However, desires can't be harvested unless it's released from the human's body and becomes magic. The best way to do this is to have the person "Make a Wish".

This is why Fairies can't get desires from adults! Adults have a strong resistance to memory-tampering magic, which means their wishes are near impossible to grant if Fairies want to stay hidden.

After the wish is granted, the desire is removed and sent to the Big Wand. From there, desires leak out across Fairyworld, and fairies get to eat! It tastes best in the form of chocolate cake, I've heard.

also it's about how our world's systems are built; we need to know where and how a person fits. if you're not conforming to this very specifically designed, exploitative system, you can't really survive. the man-made world order has expanded and intensified so much that you do not have other options than to live within it (if not entirely, than at least you have to interact with it to some degree).

i will never understand humanity's incessant need to quantify and label everything. "10K steps a day", "at least a 3.4 GPA", "no more than 500 calories", "8 hours of work", "$100k per month", "3 years of experience as an investment banker" ahhhh stop. we are complicating things far too much and life does not deserve that. life is very simple. why can't we just enjoy the process, curiously explore everything and keep going? you'll exhaust yourself if you quantify and try to define and label every little thing in your life.
