Look at my book baby!
Got my editor's copies of my book today! Aren't they gorgeous? (Ignore the "not for sale" line through the cover- that goes away during publication- and the shitty quality of my camera!) I'm going through the book to make final edits- it really is looking like this book about a sapphic ex-Chosen One (gotta love an unlikable lady protag) falling for her rival is going to be able to go up for y'all by the end of March.
(Also face reveal? I guess? None of y'all care about that, but I will be one of those annoying parents who poses with my kids, aka my characters.)
Which means there's only one real question: do y'all want me to post the playlists for the characters/ships here as a lead-up to the book coming out?

Some Calgary care homes cautiously optimistic after COVID-19 stats improve
One by one, Alberta’s continuing care homes are slowly recovering from COVID-19 outbreaks, and that’s good news for the province as it hopes to move to Stage 2 of its economic relaunch ahead of schedule.
There are now 29 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta’s care centres.
Close to 700 residents have recovered from the illness but 112 have died.

This Rotten Work Has Been Published!
Do you like Carry On or NBC's Community? Do you like messy lesbians in an enemies-to-lovers dynamic? Do you want to know what happens to Chosen Ones after they defeat their villain? Do you wish for a version of Harry Potter that isn't transphobic, homophobic, antisemitic, and racist? (Did you enjoy the seventy million fics I wrote about the mentors coping with the aftermath of the Hunger Games?) Do you like messy background poly bisexuals?
Well, here it is, y'all: all of the edits are done and my book baby has been published! Rachel and Daiyu are finally here for y'all to meet! I'm ordering my own copies now (and will definitely update y'all with photos when they arrive, especially now that I can get a photo with BOTH of my books), but for now, I just wanted to give y'all the link so you can check it out. I'm going to put the blurb below to those who are confused as to what this might be!
Amazon.com: This Rotten Work: 9798879537734: Jenkins, Kenna: Books
The moment Chosen One Rachel Barsky finally kills her magical high school’s evil Headmaster, she’s out. No pressure, no politics, and certainly no more death tournaments for her. She ditches the Magical Realm for a far more chill Normie community college with her two best friends, determined to finally get some blessed peace and quiet—maybe even a good nap. It’s what she deserves after giving up her teenage years to a prophecy that nearly killed her more times than she can count.
But of course Rachel can’t catch a break. Her first day of classes, tragedy arrives on campus in the form of Daiyu Nightbane, Rachel’s archrival and the annoyingly attractive daughter of the now-dead Headmaster. Daiyu’s acting suspiciously normal, Rachel is pissed, and her friends are preaching forgiveness and peace. What gives?
Rachel expects to have to grit her teeth and soldier through the annoyance of her rival haunting her early retirement, but she quickly learns that expectations are never made to last. After an explosive duel that ends up with one of them knocked off of their feet, Rachel is forced to see a kinder side of Daiyu than she ever glimpsed during high school.
Over a school year filled with Shakespeare, lightning magic, and quite a lot of kosher BBQ, Rachel finds herself toppling head-over-heels into an unlikely romance with her rival while she struggles with nightmares, grief, and lingering questions from her high school years. Is it possible to finally make a life for herself? Can the Chosen One really have a happy ending with the golden girl that ruled the school?
---
And to all those who have been following this saga (or liked my fics with similar premises/themes), I think I've managed to gather all of your usernames here for the official publishing!

This Rotten Work: Quick Update + Surprise Playlist!
Hey y'all just wanted to let y'all know that I have been sick for the past few days due to a pretty bad migraine/after-headaches brought on by hitting my head on a pipe at work so I haven't had the mental capacity to finish the last couple of chapters of edits and hit Publish on This Rotten Work. Sorry for the delay, but it should be up by the end of the week! In the meantime, I offer you a playlist for all of my poor traumatized blorbos, aka the main cast of This Rotten Work.
Excerpt:
Zell has a graveyard on the roof. There are no bodies, nothing so gruesome as that. Just flowers. A garden full of ghosts.
Attached to every plant, there is a name. Idunn. Sergio. Calli. Porter. The names go on and on, one small ribbon for every child who died in the Tournament while we were there.
These aren’t tombstones. They’re not graves.
But they are a memorial.
Zell took every death as his own failure, even the ones he didn’t execute himself. He took each one as his own guilt to bear. Atlas, Stebbie nicknamed him sophomore year, a sad smile on her face, and it’s an allusion he’s never corrected.
I wonder how much guilt is attached to each little white ribbon, each dead soul. Zell didn’t sit shiva for any of these souls, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t find a way to mark what they stand for.
I want to believe that there is hope tangled up in these vines, measured in petals and stored in apples. There has to be. I don’t know if I can bear it if Zell can’t find some way to get comfort.

This Rotten Work Playlists: Rachel Edition!
As @evelynhug0 so kindly requested, I'm going to release each of the main character playlists (and one for the main ship, Rachel and Daiyu) once a week leading up to the release of the book!
First up is Rachel Barsky, my beloved lesbian ex-Chosen One with anger management issues and lots of heart. After killing the evil Headmaster of her magical high school, she's doing her best to settle into normalcy at Normie community college by living with her two best friends, Zell and Stebbie, cooking a lot of Kosher BBQ, and attending history and theater classes. (She's a self-admitted drama queen, what can she say?) There's just one problem: her annoyingly attractive rival, Daiyu, shows up on the first day of classes, and Rachel's instinct to shoot lightning first and ask questions later is going to get everyone into a whole heap of trouble.
Here's a sample of her character description:
"Yep, that's me: a face full of freckles and close-set brown eyes full of ghosts. A head of frizzy blonde curls only able to be tamed when pulled into fishtail braids and a nose that’s a bit too big and pinched and a mouth that’s too loud for anyone save Zell and Stebbie. A chunk of the top of my left ear missing thanks to a fire blast from Daiyu in the Tournament. Medium height, medium build, only muscles coming from a lifetime of running and years of reluctant dueling training I got after school. A girl who was born during one hurricane and who lost her parents in another.
I make sense in this household of misfits and dreamers, kids who are a little too strange to fit in right."

The thing about self-publishing is occasionally knowing that you have a manuscript/book that would go gangbusters on this website if only you had a bit of a marketing team/the ability to put it into people's hands/bookstores. The manuscript/book I'm finishing formatting/doing the last editing run on is about an ex-Chosen One falling for her rival and it's all Shakespeare references and Greek mythology allegories and sapphic rivalry and trauma recovery and tenderness and women's wrongs and chaotic background poly and lightning and fire magic (both as metaphors and literally). You get Sisyphus and Romeo and Juliet and Andromeda and Lady Macbeth and Les Miserables through the lens of two very traumatized self-admittedly overdramatic eighteen-year-old lesbian rivals with enough magical firepower to destroy an army and all the need to just heal but with a tendency to miscommunicate that could rival any fanfic. Also Hozier, kosher BBQ, Guitar Hero, and copious Community references. *slaps the hood of the car* What more could you want?
...Anyway "This Rotten Work" is going to come out in all likelihood on March 31st so stay tuned!

This Rotten Work final playlist: Rachel/Daiyu!
As @evelynhug0 so kindly requested, I'm going to release each of the main character playlists (and one for the main ship, Rachel and Daiyu) once a week leading up to the release of the book!
With the book coming out next week, here is your final playlist, the big guns: the ship playlist for Rachel and Daiyu, our enemies-to-lovers lesbians draped in fire/lightning symbolism/magical powers, shared trauma, an absolutely brutal understanding of each other, and a shared love for drama. Both self-admittedly overdramatic with a love for Shakespeare, both know how to hit where it hurts and how to help each other cope- it'll just take a few duels, awful attempts at communication, and the world falling apart around them to get to that point.
Oh, and a few life-shattering secrets coming to light, but, well, y'all will have to read the book in order to hit that point, right?
Excerpt:
Daiyu and I are not that different, at the end of the day. We’ve had to do everything needed to conform to what Councilors and Headmasters and Administrators expected of us. We’ve had to kill, to maim, to torture. Neither of us really had a choice.
“Because you’re like me,” I murmur.
Daiyu's gaze snaps up to meet mine. She leans forward, her off-the-shoulder blouse falling slightly to expose more of her sculpted shoulder. “What was that?” she snaps, voice a smoky rasp that sends goosebumps up and down my arms.
“You’re like me,” I repeat, “You don’t like—"
And I’m cut off by Daiyu lurching a few inches forward and pressing her lips to mine.
I've kissed girls before, but not like this. Not girls who I've spent years hating—or, at least, rivaling. Not girls who I’ve cooked with and roasted and dueled in the hallways of the Academy and helped practice their theater lines. Not Lady Macbeths-in-training, not Headmaster’s daughters, not girls who take my breath away with their mere existence.
Sasquatch’s big toe, I’m kissing my sworn enemy.

Pick the next cover for my book!
As I am finishing up my Doctor Who fic series, I'm finally coming back to the poll I put to all of y'all lovely followers two months ago: what book I should self-publish next. The winner ended up being the pitch "ex-Chosen one Done With This Shit falls for her ex-rival (CARRY ON x COMMUNITY)." As a result, I have mocked-up three prospective covers/cover ideas for the book and I would love for y'all to choose which one attracts your attention/your interest the most. The blurb is beneath the photos for context.

Oh, and an alternate I made after I made this poll last night (comment if this is your pick, sorry I can't edit polls after they're made):

This Rotten Work Playlists: Daiyu Edition!
As @evelynhug0 so kindly requested, I'm going to release each of the main character playlists (and one for the main ship, Rachel and Daiyu) once a week leading up to the release of the book!
Second up is Daiyu Nightbane, our dear archrival of the main character draped in fire symbolism, severely repressed sapphic feelings, and a whole lot of trauma (aka the lesbian Baz Pitch or Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor of this story). The "fell first" part of the "she fell first, but she fell harder" equation, she is the daughter of the evil Headmaster of their magical school but had to repress that shit deep because the very person her father was replacing her with as his heir is the very Chosen One that she has a crush on, but that Chosen One is Rachel, aka a girl, and that is very much a no-go. Daiyu just wants to live a normal life, enjoying Shakespeare and coffee (her two favorite parts of the Normie world), but plenty of people see her as a bargaining chip or want her to atone for her father's actions. Oh, and Rachel would rather fight her than give her the time of day.
As Rachel describes her in Chapter 15:
"Daiyu's sitting on the window seat, staring out over the cityscape. Her hand is casually flung over her knees, mug clasped in her fingers. The streetlight outside the window throws dim, orange light over her features, illuminating the red rimming her eyes. I can smell something stiff sloshing about in that cup, something that closely resembles the bottle of vodka in my nightstand. Maybe the huangjiu, maybe something stronger. In Daiyu’s free hand, hanging by her side, tiny fire sylphs dance, little yellow flames throwing flickering shadows across her face.
By HaShem, she is gorgeous.
Despite the solemnity in her expression, she’s so beautiful. She was called the golden light of the Rising Sun, and that title wasn’t wrong. Even without her spangled red robes or gold ruqun, even without her crown, she is captivating, elegance and allure arrayed about her. Her posture is perfect, her spine lined by power and strength, even in Normie clothes with a half-working wand."

Choose The Next Book I Publish!
Btw, if I don't find a new fandom to get into in the next, oh, couple of weeks, I'm going to go ahead with formatting/editing/publishing my next novel! I'd love for y'all to let me know which of these concepts you would be interested in (all of them are finished & edited manuscripts that just need one final polish/cover design). Whichever one ends WILL be the next book I put out, so choose wisely (or spread to your friends to skew the results, whichever floats your boat).
(Oh, and the "comparisons" here are NOT fanfic-related, it's just to describe the vibes.)
Oh, and if there are any artists who might be interested in making a cover/cover art for a cover, I'm good to commission one! My budget generally runs about 200$ for a cover, so if that's not enough for you, I totally understand, but if you're at all interested, please let me know!

someone should really take free canva/pixabay away from me because I have at least five manuscripts in my google drive and only one cover concept that definitely cannot be accomplished with canva (R.I.P. to my beloved scifi/rom-com dragons v. aliens under a dystopian dome trilogy & my hotel for monsters murder mystery, you'll have to wait for an actual illustrator). I already have three alternate covers for my coming-of-age sapphic rivals to-lovers novel, four alternatives for my literary fiction novel, and five alternatives for my sapphic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel. AND I JUST GOT MY HANDS ON IT TODAY. Like, feast your eyes on the bullshit my hands have created (some of which is decent, some of which is hot garbage, and some of which I'm genuinely in love with):

This Rotten Work Playlists: Zell edition!
As @evelynhug0 so kindly requested, I'm going to release each of the main character playlists (and one for the main ship, Rachel and Daiyu) once a week leading up to the release of the book!
Third up is Marcel "Zell" Oathkeeper, one of the two best friends of Rachel and our resident disaster poly bisexual. Born into a Magical family, Zell is a bit out of place in the Normie world, what with his yellow turtlenecks, overalls, and ascots, but he's rather enthusiastic about certain discoveries, such as Guitar Hero and Mountain Dew. He likes to experiment with his cooking in his free time and his best friends have been the unfortunate recipients of many Mountain-Dew-related experiments. Underneath his optimistic attitude, however, lies a deep-seated survivor's guilt and worse coping methods than he's letting on, the best of which is the garden of ghosts he's maintaining with his Vine-Slinging powers (aka plant powers).
As Rachel describes him in Chapter 1:
“Excuse you, I love my clothes.” Zell even reaches up and smooths out his neon yellow henley to prove the point.
I arch an eyebrow at the state of his pants. “Tell that to the dirt stains on your knees, Ni.”
“You just can’t appreciate the beauty of nature, Ray,” Zell tsks as he grabs his backpack from Stebbie’s well-organized hands.
That’s Marcel Oathkeeper in his natural form for you: Zell the plant boy. Overalls and plant magic and a rooftop garden above our apartment. Dirt constantly caked under his fingernails and ground into his pants. Long, gangly limbs that looked awkward until he grew into them. He and Stebbie are quite the match, given the nearly twelve-inch-height-difference between them.

I find it kinda funny that I have six finished manuscripts and clearly from my, well, established body of work *gestures to all 2.2 million words on my entire ao3 account* I write a variety of different main characters, sexualities, and the like, but that both of my first two published books have main characters who are "unlikable" blonde lesbians with fire symbolism engaging in forbidden romances who are technically major power players in their respective political structures. I didn't even write these two manuscripts right next to each other- they were manuscripts four and six that I've ever finished! Is this typecasting for self-published books?
