Sockeye salmon!

During breeding season, both males and females favour large-bodied partners! This is because a larger female salmon can produce more eggs and dig deeper nests, and a larger male salmon can fight off other male salmon better.

School of Sockeye Salmon (Katmai National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I captured this image at the Lower River Platform with a view looking to the southwest at the waters of Brooks River while observing brown bears in Katmai National Park. As I stood at this overlook and chanced to look down into the waters, I was able to catch this gathering of sockeye salmon. The rest of composition was a matter of angling my Nikon SLR camera along with my position to minimize the reflections off the waters while capturing a large enough group of the salmon.

Sockeye salmon!

This species of salmon has bluegrey colouration while living in the ocean, but their body turns red when migrating upstream into their home rivers!

For real, it's quite drastic. Here's a mature sockeye salmon compared to a migrating mature sockeye salmon:

Salmon Jumping in Brooks Lake (Katmai National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view while walking the shoreline of Brooks Lake looking to the west. The view was a timed capture with two salmon jumping out of the waters of the lake. I just happened to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward, so that I was able to capture a more sweeping view across the lake and have the distant shoreline with trees and mountains as a frame, so to speak, for the upper portion of the image and complement the setting.
