Riley ship opinions, pt. 1, M/F edition (m/m version here, polyship version here)

If I missed one you want to hear my opinion on, put it in the replies and I'll add onto this post in a reblog.

Buffy x Riley: Is canon. Is the ship this blog is supposedly "about". I like it. Not *super* fond of how it played out in canon, but they're real cute in S4 and have some very sweet moments, like in Hush and Goodbye Iowa. Wish there was more content for it, especially fixit, canon divergent, AU, etc.

Riley x Willow: Gonna be honest, when I started S4 I thought they were teasing this as a ship. They could be cute romantically, especially if they had like a nerd4nerd dynamic going. I think I like it a bit better platonic. I think a really sweet scenario is some sort of AU where Riley is also openly queer (I'm sorry but I'm never not gonna read that man as a repressed bisexual), and he and Willow are friends who support each other.

Riley x Darla: Ok they never met in canon but that never stopped me before. In a more canon sense, I feel like they could have a really fucked up thing where they'd both be obsessed with Angel (cause you know Riley was) and they end up sleeping together or something. I do think in an AU they could be sweet and wholesome but honestly that's most all the ships imo.

Riley x Drusilla: See above when it comes to not meeting in canon. Drusilla would keep him as a pet. Riley, as a psych student, would be fascinated by how her mind works. How... cute?

Riley x Maggie Walsh: "Hello, thank you for calling Mommy Issues Central, how may I direct your call?" But in all seriousness this would be fucked up in so many ways but also somewhat plausible and you know what? I am here for it.

Riley x Tara: Another one I'd prefer platonic. I'm not entirely opposed to Tara in het ships (I kinda like the reading of her character that she's more attracted to like... the person as opposed to gender?) but I usually prefer her in f/f ships. Also, I just don't think Tara and Riley had much chemistry romantically. I'd like them as friends in the same type of scenario as with Willow tho, that could be cute.

Riley x Anya: Not really my fav, honestly. Didn't see much chemistry between them, like with Tara. Not huge on them romantically or platonic.

oh HELL yeah !!!!

xillow: i am always chewing on the excellence of xander and willow as a platonic love story so i tend to veer in that direction myself, BUT i think it's unfairly hated in fandom.

xanya: i want to take them apart like little bugs. something about this very real love trapped within this mutual desire to Be Normal (xander's masculinity complex, anya's anxieties about humanity) is such a compelling narrative! also xander really did love anya and that's that on that. it's just that his version of loving someone is either leaving them or convincing them to leave him, because he does not think he deserves his partners.

faith x xander: .....soured for me by the fact that faith did straight up sexually assault xander. i don't think i can see it.

xandelia: hands down my favorite ship from the high school years after calendiles. i could watch those freaks be horrible to each other forever. i could write a dissertation on why they are a true, tragic love story and why their breakup was inevitable from the very moment they got together. every day of my life i think about that moment in killed by death where he's sitting outside of buffy's hospital room and she sits down next to him with a bag of donuts and they just sorta smile at each other, because i truly think that that isolated scene is such an excellent metaphor for one of cordelia's primary anxieties -- he is waiting to be in a room that he will never be in, and she is meeting him outside of it but knowing that he wants to be inside. wondering if he would leave her outside, given the chance. they are in love. i will bite anyone who says that xander mistreated poor little uwu baby cordy because that girl literally threw his abusive home life in his face post-breakup and bullied him for a DECADE. they're that reddit post where it's like "you're both terrible but it's clearly working for you. just don't involve anyone else in what you've got going on"

“Blondie, Riley you might wanna sit down for this,” Matty says as Mac and Riley shuffle into her office and shut the door. “I just got word from a friend of a friend that Jack Dalton was killed in action 2 weeks ago. His body will be transported back to the US tomorrow and we’re going to be there to welcome him home.”

“He’s NOT dead, Matty. He can’t be. He just ca-,” Mac pleads voice cracking as he sobs, “He promised me he’d come home. He promised.”

“Mac, I know it’s hard to believe but I’ve got pretty definitive proof that he’s gone. I’m trying to spare you the gory details and pictures but Mac there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s Jack. I’ll let you and Riley have as much as you need to process. Hell take the next week off and I’ll let you know if anything comes up that needs your attention and skill sets,” she hugs both of them before walking out and closing the door behind her.

Glancing over at Riley, Mac can see the war of emotions in her eyes and the gears beginning to turn in her mind, “Riles what’s up? You don’t think he’s dead do you? Please tell me you don’t really think he’s gone.”

“Jack was like my dad and I don’t know what to think. I hate the idea that he’s gone but what if he really is, Mac? What then?”

“I don’t know Riles. I really don’t but I do know that Jack Wyatt Dalton is too stubborn to die. If anyone can figure out how to fake their death it’s him. Now I’m gonna go make sure that everything is in place to welcome his empty flag draped coffin home tomorrow. Call me if you wanna talk or just come over and we’ll hang out, okay?,” Mac says hugging her before taking his own leave.

Kovac knew about Mac and Riley. Knew about his team, his family with the Phoenix. He’d threatened them so Jack did the only thing he could think of: he faked his death. He made sure that Martinez had his will and his dad’s dog tags. Made sure that Riley, his sweet, badass daughter in everything but blood, Riley would get his GTO. Made sure that Mac, his best friend, his whole heart if he really stops to think about it gets the dog tags and his favorite shirts. A postcard with cryptic clues is set to be sent and he’s ready to see how long it takes before Angus MacGyver is picking the lock on the door at his ranch in Texas.

He just hopes that that skinny EOD tech with the silly hamburger name can read between the lines and investigates his “death” and along the way kills Anya Vitez because the witch deserves it.

Being presented the dog tags, the most important thing to Jack and Riley getting his GTO, Mac begins to wonder if maybe he really is crazy thinking Jacks still alive. There’s no way that Jack would voluntarily let go of his dads dog tags. Someone would have to pry them away from Jack’s cold dead hands.

Walking out on the deck with the mail, a postcard catches his attention and the name “Ozzy Ulrich” sends butterflies fluttering through his stomach, because Jack was reaching out. A cover ID but still Jack was reaching out to him and he couldn’t wait to call Riley and tell her.

As if she knows he’s just been thinking about her, he hears the sound of the GTOs engine and flies back through the house and is standing in the driveway as Riley opens the door. “Whoa hey Mac. What’s up with the jumping and stuff?”

“Jack! He sent me a postcard under one of his old cover ids. He’s not dead, Riles!! He’s hiding and I need to go find him. First though I need to find Anya Vitez and make sure she’s put in a jail cell to rot.”

“Who’s Anya Vital?”

“Vitez. She’s Tiberius Kovac or at least one person behind Tiberius Kovac. Do you think you could try tracking her? I need to call Matty and tell her I’m using up my vacation time. I’m Croatia bound ASAP.”

“Correction, Blondie we’re Croatia bound and you’re going to go find Jack and you’re going to drag him back to the Phoenix. Do I make myself clear?,” Matty says getting out of her own car and Mac doesn’t know when she got here but he’s not about to argue.

“Yes ma’am. Can I ask why I’m not going with you?”

“Look Mac there’s a better chance that Vitez is gonna realize that Jack faked his death and I’m afraid she’s gonna come after you to get Jack to come out of hiding. I need you to find him and make sure he’s safe until we get her and her minions put behind bars. You’re the only one I trust with his safety. This is blanket permission to use a Phoenix jet to and from wherever he is. And for the love of god tell him you’re in love with him this time, okay? I want both of you to be happy and Russ don’t give me that look, I do have a heart contrary to popular belief.”

Jack Dalton wasn’t known for his patience and being back in Texas was great and all but he missed his found family. He missed Mac and Riley. Missed being able to go out in public and do whatever whenever, but to protect his best friend and his kid he’d stay cooped up inside all the time if it meant they were safe and sound in LA.

He just hoped that Vitez would be brought down soon so he could go confess his feelings to his boy genius best friend. The best friend he should’ve never left in the first place if he’s being honest. Mac deserved more than a handshake in the War Room and it’s been eating away at him since he walked out. He should’ve kissed him the first time right after they walked off the plane stateside after the Sandbox.

Now that he thinks about it there’s a million times, he should’ve told Mac how he felt. He just hopes they’ll be a million more opportunities in the future.

It’s risky as hell but he can’t let Mac think he’s dead. What if the postcard didn’t make it there and he’s crying out on the deck at home. What if he’s drinking himself to death because he truly believes I’m gone? Come on Mac, use that big brain of yours and find me. Have Riley track me or something. I love you Hoss and I miss you so much baby.

Pulling out his phone he clicks on the only number in his contacts on this burner phone and carefully types out;

Hitting send he shut it down and prays that Mac and his big beautiful brain will know right where to find him.

Mac’s standing in his room packing a bag when his phone begins to buzz. He almost ignores it figuring it’s just Bozer checking in, but some little part of his heart gives him the feeling it’s Jack.

Jack was an idiot for getting in touch but it also put Mac’s mind at ease. TX? Son of a bitch he’s been in Texas all this time and Mac had never even considered it. He’d been planning on going to Vegas or maybe Paris somewhere with a huge population Jack would be able to lose himself in but Texas made sense even if Mac thought it was dumb.

Quickly changing out of his dress uniform and into jeans and one of Jack’s Metallica shirts (okay so he stole one after Jack left sue him), he grabs his bag, texts Bozer letting him know he was gonna be gone for awhile and to stay safe in Croatia he heads to the private Phoenix air pad and he’s Texas bound. He just hopes that Jack is prepared to be hugged within an inch of his life and to never leave Mac’s sight because he can’t lose Jack again.

Jack’s fixing the kitchen drawer where he broke it the night before after texting Mac when he feels like he’s being watched.

Looking up he startles when he comes face to face with a pair of black horses. He’d known the horses were somewhere on the property when he bought it but the previous owner’s daughter wasn’t sure where. She’d said they weren’t named and had been wandering for a while. Studying the one on the left as he stands up and opens the window, he can see splashes of white on its nose and realizes it’s almost in the shape of the Delta Force insignia.

Deciding to name that one Delta Dawn, he figures that he’ll leave the other one unnamed until Mac arrives and let him name it. That’s if Mac shows up at all and the thought makes him want to cry.

Landing at the little airstrip 20 minutes from Jack’s hometown, Mac takes a minute to breathe. It’s weird being in Texas without Jack’s constant commentary about the good ole days of the Daltons. The stories Mac has heard about Jack, his cousins and a slew of friends could probably fill a novel and it feels like he knows the entire family.

Hopping into the Jeep that Matty arranged for him, Mac pulls away from the airstrip and heads towards Jack’s hometown and hopefully someone with information on where Jack is. His first stop is Betty Lou’s diner and some of the sweetest apple pie Mac’s ever tasted. While he’s there, he’ll pick up some food for supper and then go find his partner.

“Mac, baby. What brings you to Texas?,” Betty Lou asks as soon as Mac walks in the door. She’s already getting a slice of pie out of the pie plate and pouring him a cup of coffee without prompting.

“Miss Betty Lou, I came down here to find a friend of mine. I thought I remembered him saying something about coming to Texas if he ever got the chance,” Mac says sitting down on a stool at the counter, “thank you ma’am this sure looks good.”

“This friend wouldn’t happen to be my favorite Dalton would it? I love that whole family I do but that boy has always been the kindest one.”

“Yes, ma’am it is. You don’t happen to know where I could find him do you?,” he tries to keep his voice down on the off chance that someone else is here looking for Jack.

“Darlin’ he bought my brothers old place about 15 minutes outside of town. There’s a giant purple tractor parked out by the road you can’t miss it. The tractor was my nieces idea back when they were little and my brother couldn’t say no to either one of them. Give me a few minutes and I’ll get James to make y’all a bunch of food to cover ya for the next few days.”

“Thank you ma’am,” Mac says finishing his pie and taking a sip of coffee. Before he knows it, he’s got enough food to feed a small army for a week and directions to head east until he sees the tractor.

Jack’s puttering around the house when he hears what sounds like a jet flying overhead and then the world goes dead silent. He startles when he hears someone pull in the gravel driveway. Rushing to the door with a rifle in hand, he’s greeted with one of most glorious sights when he peeks out the window. Angus MacGyver is sitting in his driveway and Jack can’t help but run outside to get to his boy.

Mac is just getting out of his Jeep when he feels gun calloused hands grab him and he’s pulled into a bear hug by the only person that really still matters in his life.

“Mac, Mac, Mac,” Jack’s repeating in this scared disbelieving voice and it takes everything in him to break the hug. “You’re really here! You found me. I knew you would. I love you Hoss.”

“Yeah Jack I’m here and I don’t plan on leaving you ever again. I love you, too Jack,” Mac tells him. I love you in a totally different way than you meant I’m sure. Wait I’m in love with him? Hell I guess Matty was right after all. Mac thinks to himself before throwing caution to the wind and wrapping his arms around Jack again this time to pull him in for one of the sweetest kisses.

Jack breaks the kiss just long enough to whisper I love you again. Breaking their kiss for the second time, he lets go of Mac to grab his suitcase while Mac grabs the box of food and before too long he’s leading his man into the house.

He grimaces when he sees the empty beer bottles on the kitchen counter and handful of dishes in the sink. It’s too late now to do anything about it anyway so he just shows Mac where to put the food and he’s hauling him into another hug. This one not nearly as tight but warm and comforting all the same because his sweet, sassy, intelligent man is here in the flesh and he feels the same way Jack does.

“Jack as much as I wanna keep kissing you I need to let Matty and the team know you’re safe and that I’m with you. How ‘bout we go sit in the living room on the couch and I can cuddle you as I’m on the phone?

“Okay, hoss. Tell the boss lady I’m good just frustrated with the way the Kovac mission ended.”

Moving them over to the couch, Mac gets comfortable and pulls Jack into his side. He goes to call Matty and changes his mind, “hey Jack what happened with the mission? We got word from Matty that you were gone and she said there was definitive proof. She said there were pictures but she wouldn’t tell let Riley or I either one see them and she wouldn’t tell us how exactly you were “killed”.”

“Mac, there was a guy over there that was working with Kovac who looked similar enough to me that we may have used him as a prop to stage my “death”. He planned to turn against Anya and the rest her crew and they were planning to kill him for it. He told me the night before that she knew about you and Riley and that she was planning to send one of Murdoc’s associates after our entire Phoenix family. He sacrificed himself to make sure I could fake my death. If not for him I wouldn’t be sitting here with you, baby.”

“As sad as I am that someone died I’m also weirdly grateful that he was willing to sacrifice himself to save you. I love you Jack Wyatt Dalton. Now let’s call Matty and see if they’ve got Anya and her minions.”

Finally calling Matty, Mac can hear gunshots and grunts and then Matilda the Hun’s voice in his ear. “Blondie, please tell me you have Jack or at least know where he is.”

“I’ve got him and he’s safe. Look I know I promised I’d drag him back to the Phoenix as soon as I had him but I was wondering if maybe I could use my vacation time up and come back to work in a couple months instead? I want a few weeks with him before everyone else gets their hands on him and you and Russ start asking a ton of questions about the mission. Please Matty I promise we’ll-,” Mac is pleading before Matty cuts him off.

“Take as long as you want, MacGyver. Where is he though so I at least know where to send supplies and things for the two of you and I can tell the team?”

“Texas. I’ll send you the coordinates but could you maybe keep everyone at bay for a few days until I get him used to being around people again and used to people not shooting at him 24/7?”

“That’s fine, Mac. Tell your man we got Anya Vitez and her crew. They’re being held at a black site overseen by the US and British governments and they’re all looking at life in prison for their crimes. Jack and his team are true heroes and I’ll make sure the world knows it too.”

“Mac, you have Jack? You have my dad? Oh thank god, but tell him I still wanna kick his ass for making us worry about. You can also tell him his car is safe and sound. Maybe if he’s okay with it, we can drive down sometime and hangout with you guys?,” Riley’s voice breaks in rambling and Mac has to laugh.

“Yeah, Riles he’s safe. Hey, Jack?”

“Hmm, what baby?,” Jack hums against his neck where he’s made himself comfortable.

“You mind if Riley and the team come hang out with us sometime in the next month or so?”

“Riles, wants to see me? Hell yeah hoss they can come spend time with us!,” Jack screeches excitedly in his ear.

“Riley, Jack seems pretty excited about seeing you guys. Let’s say you show up sometime next month and we’ll all hang out. Tell Boze and the team I’ll talk to them later, okay?”

“Okay, thank you Mac. I love you guys.”

Hanging up his phone Mac stretches his arm out across the back of the couch starts absentmindedly running his hand up and down Jack’s arm and shoulder. “They got Anya and her crew locked up, so Mr. Dalton what do you wanna do now that you’re a free man? I’m game for almost anything if you catch my drift,” Mac says looking into Jack’s deep brown eyes.

“Before we do anything like that I want you to meet a couple people then I want a nap. If that’s okay with you?,” Jack whispers suddenly shy.

“A nap sounds good but who are these people you want me to meet,” Mac asks curiosity peeked.

“Delta Dawn and her unnamed horse companion. They came with the property but I didn’t meet them until right before you showed up. I was told they were roaming the property and they didn’t have names. I was fixing something I broke when in the kitchen when they appeared outside the window,” Jack excitedly rambles pulling Mac off the couch and out into the yard towards the corral where the horses have migrated in the ensuing hours since they appeared.

Looking in Mac sees two of the most beautiful horses he’s ever seen and can see why Jack chose Delta as a name for his, but Dawn doesn’t make immediate sense in his mind. “Why Dawn though?”

“A Tanya Tucker song, hoss! What do you wanna name yours though? And yes I left one unnamed for you and don’t you dare argue with me about it, Angus.”

“Bombshell. Her name is Bombshell. Thank you Jack it means a lot that you knew I’d find you.”

“Delta Dawn and Bombshell, I like it. Now let’s go get these two put up in the barn and go start the rest of our lives, why don’t we?”

My faves are Faith and Buffy. And I wholeheartedly agree with explosionshark's rally cry of "Switch Fuffy Rights!" (actually I agree with everything in her #2 answer and again you should read it)

Like I'm legit considering making a T-shirt or hoodie that simply says "SWITCH FUFFY RIGHTS!" ROFL

Related... Faith calling safe words "safety words" strikes me as someone who only has a vague grasp on how they are used. (Angel may also say "safety word" which I'm conveniently ignoring right now.) She gets the rough idea (no pun intended) but has never been in a situation where she or her partner are using them. (violence level: none)

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

KENNEDY and RONA deserve more love. I like both of them and wish there were fewer Potentials and more focus on the two of them. I definitely related to Kennedy more than Tara or Willow, and some of that is because she's brown! They both had attitude, which is super realistic. Kennedy admits she's a brat. Rona starts out really negative about being a Slayer, but by the end she uses the scythe to kill some baddies. Was she wrong for saying "ding dong the witch is dead?" Of course! But I still like her. (violence level: medium to high?)

23. ship you've unwillingly come around to

Oooh this is tough. I feel like most of the main BTVS canon ships I already like or am not bothered by. Bangel does have some chemistry in S1 and S2. Spuffy brings it in later seasons. I'm feral for Fuffy. I hate Briley (Buffy x Riley) and still do. I like Tillow and Calendiles and Willow x Kennedy (? Wennedy? Killow?? no idea what the smush name is). I think I'll pick Cordy x Xander, but more in a "on later rewatches I like this pairing more than I initially did" way.

For fanon only ships I'm a fan of Buffy x Anya. Less "unwillingly come around to" and more "never really considered it before". (violence level: mild)

One thing that annoys me about some of the ships in the Buffyverse, is how a character will start dating someone who bad mouths a previous love interest of theirs that they still clearly care about.

And I just... maybe this is just because I don't like anyone putting other people down, ever. (And, for instance, I remember one time when one of my RL friends was insulting another one of my friends that she didn't like, and I kindly asked her to stop.)

But for me personally, this would not endear me to the new love interest and make me want to date them. The opposite, actually.

But we see this with Angel and Cordelia. Eventually, these two form a romance, but Cordy had often put Buffy down in the past.

(Also, I feel like Cordelia and Wesley mocking Buffy and Angel's romance--when the two were meeting each other right after she'd come back from the dead!--was not good, even though they were just teasing and it was all supposed to be in good fun.)

Likewise, Bangel somewhat starts up again in the comics after Cordelia's death. And Buffy wasn't really around when the Angel/Cordelia stuff was happening to be saying hurtful stuff about Cordelia really at all, or around Angel. But there is a moment in the comics where Buffy dreams that they're all back in their high school years and that Cordelia is bullying Willow. And to cheer Willow up she tells her something along the lines of, "Some day you might be a super powerful witch and she might be dead." :( And I feel like if Angel ever found out about that, he wouldn't be happy, of course. (To be honest, I think Buffy in the comics is pretty OOC, and this is an example of it. Though that really isn't the point here.)

We have Spike putting down both Riley and Angel when he's wanting to get with Buffy.

And also Angel saying bad things about Spike when he clearly still wants to be with Buffy when she's later with Spike.

Sheesh.

In a similar vein, friends of the Scoobies putting down one of the Scoobies' love interests also happens quite a bit.

Xander cutting down Angel because of his jealousy. And after the Angelus stuff, no one is really comfortable around him. Which is definitely justified. Though one might argue that at some point it's like, "Why are you willing to forgive X character for this, but not Y character for that?" And Giles letting Fred die because of what Angel did is just... too much. And in the books, some of the way Giles treats Angel after the Angelus stuff--even if you do get it's because of the trauma there--is quite petty.

Spike... to be honest, I feel like Buffy and the Scoobies are justified in how they treat Spike, for the most part, when he doesn't have a soul. And I think after he gains one, pretty soon they accept him and start treating him pretty well (like in the comics) Maybe the closest I can think of of when they maybe went too far, is when he wanted to give Buffy flowers after Joyce's death.

Cordelia with Xander: this one is really quite sad. Both Buffy and Willow really didn't like Xander dating Cordy (even while somewhat becoming friends with her during it? So it kind of feels a little bit back-stabby, maybe. Though, to be fair, I think maybe some of this dies down as they do spend time with Cordelia and befriend her more and more). And I do get it: Cordy bullied Willow for years and Cordy's also been mean to Buffy for most of her time in Sunnydale thus far. But still. What's even worse is that Xander even seems to agree with them, and even badmouths Cordelia some himself, while dating her!

Anya. Poor Anya. Buffy and Willow really don't like her at first and say some mean things, really just because she doesn't understand what it's like to be human again, which isn't her fault (people have even argued this about Xander. And if you think that, that's fair. But I think it's moreso that Xander is trying to help her understand the human world that she doesn't quite get. I really don't think he's talking down to her. But if you do, I definitely understand your side). Eventually, however, I do think they do become friends... but when Xander leaves Anya at the altar, Buffy and Willow mainly take Xander's side. And this must have really hurt Anya, since Buffy and Willow were her bridesmaids. She then even confronts them about is, saying in an angry and hurt tone that she gets it: Xander is their friend and she isn't. But in season seven, we see how this isn't true, when Buffy informs her that it's really dangerous and she doesn't want her friends out there right now. But then- but then we get a scene where Anya tells Buffy she's not her friend. And why? Ugh, some of the S7 writing with Anya and in general. I find that hard to believe, when earlier she was hurt that Buffy and Willow didn't think of her as her friend: it clearly seems to indicate she saw them as friends and wanted to be their friend. Is it that she maybe didn't believe Buffy when she said she was her friend? Does she think that bridge has burned now? What?

When Oz starts dating Willow, Xander at first doesn't like it... because Oz is in a band and stuff, and he thinks he's too dangerous or something. LOL This is added to when Oz becomes a werewolf. This is largely because Willow and Xander have been friends for years and he's so protective of her. And also because Xander is starting to get romantic feelings for Willow at this point and is somewhat jealous. But he does get over this quickly and the two become friends.

...These are all the ones I can think of off the top of my head. But I wouldn't be surprised if I'm forgetting something.
