regulus is the perfect instrument of destruction for james. james is so easy to manipulate. he wants to believe people are inherently good, even bad people, because he wants to be the kind of person who believes such a thing (even more than he genuinely believes it).

james loves sirius so much he would do anything to make him happy, and if james convinced himself he could convince regulus to get out of that house, it would turn so quickly into a stubborn, competitive game for him that he would wind up willfully ignoring hints at regulus’ darker nature, hints at his genuine blood supremacist leanings, and hints at his admiration for voldemort. james would tell himself he’s pulling him into his life for sirius, he’d tell himself he’s doing it because its the right thing to do.

james loves to think he’s doing the right thing. even if his real motivations are full of selfish attraction and desire, he would still tell himself he’s not pursuing regulus just because he wants him.

it doesn’t matter if its true or not.

he just has to believe it’s true.

he wants to be a good person, and he wants other people to think he’s a good person. james, in his own head, is a “good guy.”

because his goodness is so integral to his sense of identity he doesn’t question very often whether or not he’s actually doing the right thing, or surrounding himself with good people. james knows he’s good, therefore the people he likes are good people, the things he does are good things (even when they are not).

regulus knows how james thinks, because james wears himself on his sleeve. he doesn’t make an effort to hide himself, or hide his weaknesses, because he doesn’t think the way regulus does. he’s smart, but he isn’t calculating. he wouldn’t think to suspect regulus is trying to get something from him beyond what he explicitly says he wants. james assumes everyone he meets is as forthcoming as he is. when someone ‘opens up’ to him he isn’t the sort of person who would wonder if they’re telling the truth.

regulus knows james is arrogant enough to believe he can fix any broken thing, so he makes himself look like a broken thing. he tells him lie after lie, and james falls for every single one hook line and sinker, because james wants to believe regulus is redeemable. he wants to believe he can save him because it fits the story he’s telling himself about who he is, and who regulus is. if regulus is a good person, then james isn’t a bad person for wanting him. he ignores red flags and inconsistencies. he doesn’t care if the veneer of acceptability is thin. all he cares about is keeping regulus once he has him. once regulus gets his teeth in him for the first time it’s already over.

james is loyal to the people he cares about to a fault, to the degree that he will excuse any awful thing they do simply because they’re his people. regulus knows this because everyone who knows him knows it. once james cares about regulus, even a little, even under false pretences, regulus knows james will bend his own morality and identity into a pretzel to accommodate the love and affection he has for him, even if he’s truly an awful person. he knows james won’t realize how far he’s bent himself out of a recognizable shape until he finally snaps. and regulus is slippery enough it would be easy for him to hide and excuse james’ wonky moral justifications until james has done something truly awful, and gone so far he can never go back to who he used to be again.

it’s nice when james and regulus make each other better, but i prefer when they start off already sort of awful and make each other so much worse.

It was Valentine’s day, and by some curse (or miracle), you were all single. Peter and his girlfriend were away for the weekend, and you’d tried to have a Galentines, but all your female friends had partners - Screw Marlene and Dorcas, Alice and Frank and Lily with her hot scientist boyfriend.

“Sweet or Salty?” Sirius enters James’ flat with a cheeky grin, holding up Tesco bags.

“Sweet!” you glare

Galentines had turned to ‘Palentines’ and you all had plans to eat dinner, play a board game and then watch a rom com - James had already downloaded ‘How to Loose a Guy in 10 days’.

“Padfoot,” Remus says in a stern tone from the kitchen “Don’t tease her,”

“Yeah Pads,” James appears out of practically thin air, slamming himself down on the sofa next to you, his arm wrapping around you “Don’t tease her,”

Sirius sticks his tongue out and ruffles both of your heads before he goes to harass Remus.

“You okay pretty girl?” James asks gently and you nod

“Tired,”

“Tired?” he gasps “How will you keep up during Twister?” you groan “What’s wrong with Twister?”

“You’re always using it as an excuse to touch Remus up,”

“To be fair,” The man appears “Last time I started it,”

“You two never take it seriously,” you pout and Sirius whines behind you

“I know, we’ll have to do teams,” his hands find James' shoulders “Moony, when’s dinner?”

“Two minutes closer than when you last asked me,”

You snort and lean your head on James’s shoulder, letting Sirius rake his hands through your hair.

Eventually, dinner is served and you’re all sat at James rickety dining table, candles lit as James had made a point of saying “It’s Valentines day! Candles are romantic,” and halfway through dinner he also accused Sirius of playing footsie with him.

Well ‘acused’, he definitely was doing it because when his leg found your calf you’d kicked him hard enough to cause a bruise. During twister he’d also ended up under Remus, placing a kiss on his nose to distract him.

You think about these moments as you sit in between James and Remus, Sirius between your legs on the floor. You four had always been friends, but you haden’t always been like this, it started when you finished school, when you spent more time together.

When asked if you had a boyfriend while out drinking, Lily liked to say that you had three.

“Guys?” you say softly and Remus pauses the tv, recognising your tone “Are we-are we more than just friends?”

“what do you mean doll?” Sirius sits up and turns around to face you and you grow nervous, James wraps an arm around your waist and Remus and Sirius each grab a hand.

“We -“ you can’t describe it “Well, we don’t act the same around eachother as we do around Peter,”

“Cos that would be weird,”

“I know,” you sigh “I think…I don’t know. I think to want to kiss you all, and i think you probably want to kiss each other ,”

Their eyes widen at this, not because it’s not true, but because they didn’t think you’d be the first to admit it.

“Yeah,” James nods “I think that’s true,” and with that, his lips are on yours, and Sirius is calling bagsy to be next - you’re not sure who he was talking to, at least Remus was patient, kissing your hand delicately.

there are sooo many ships in this fandom omg, i had a lot of different requests and i definitely didnt get all of them so maybe ill have to make one more of these LOL

Do you think Lily might have held a similar "not like other girls"/"pick me" attitude that Hermione and Ginny displayed? After all, she IS Rowling's self-insert, and we see time and time again that the only sort of femininity that is lauded in the series for being "virtuous" is the tomboyish intellectual who puts down hyperfeminine women and grows into the Madonna mother. Lily lacks female friends, presumably only hung out with the Marauders, and she is repeatedly praised for her intelligence, which seems to further point to this possibility.

Well, I don’t really have a fully formed opinion on this, because we know nothing about her and Rowling basically paints her as some kind of saint, but I wouldn’t be surprised, after all, that’s the pattern she follows with every female character she gives any prominence. Anyway, there’s already a big difference compared to Lily in the books: everyone canonically considers her “a catch,” and she was praised by all the professors. I think, in that sense, Rowling projects what she would have liked to be in school. The story of Lily and James is also a bit like the classic ’80s–’90s teen rom-com, where the pristine girl everyone adores —but who’s kind and has a big heart— manages to set the popular but kind of jerkish boy straight (one of the reasons why I find Jily such an insipid, syrupy, heteronormative couple in every sense). So in a way she’s already being given that status of “special girl” because she “tames the man” somehow, which is a super misogynistic and disgusting concept. In the end, we only know that James changed (actually, we don’t know, we just have to believe it) because Lily agreed to be with him, making her a moral compass and catalyst for male goodness, relegating her to an absolutely passive role and spiritual guide for the man. All the imagery Rowling creates around Lily is deeply conservative and sexist, honestly. But well, in a way she does have a bit of a “pick me girl” vibe, right? In the end, the only friends she has are her boyfriend’s (male) friends, and her life revolves around her boyfriend’s—and later husband’s—world, yet she’s still a “cool” character, right? I wouldn’t say she’s as obvious as Ginny or as pretentious as Hermione, but she’s showing the signs.

i keep trying to make a list of my favorite characters from harry potter, but i can't even decide on a criteria myself

i always tell people (non-fandom people, that is) that my favorites are either professor lupin or ginny, because it is easier than explaining my obsession with sirius black's brother who lived and died out of page

the top 3 that i have on the desktop version of the blog is my marauders era top 3: remus, lily and regulus. they are the ones i usually want to read and write about, i love to decipher small details about them and twist and stretch possibilities of who they might have been. i want to build entire AUs about them

and i love remus as the character he is on page, through harry's eyes. missing moments about him and tonks, or sirius, or hermione, or harry are some of my favorites to read

from the main era i love harry, obviously, and he's probably the character i love the most as he is on the page. i tend to be picky about the fanfiction i read with him. i care about him a lot and i want him to happy so most of the times i read "fix-it" fics with him being raised in a loving household (and i abandon all pretense at canon compliance lol) or post-war healing and rom coms or him learning more about his parents (which is probably the origin of my interest in marauders fics tbh). i read a lot of gen fics with him, love harry & sirius, harry & ron & hermione, harry & dudley, harry & snape, and for shipping it's usually ginny, draco or neville

then my other two favorites are ginny and neville, individually and with each other, i love their friendship and i don't mind them as a weird couple. i wish i had a thousand fics more focused on their experience of war and their processes of healing, they are so dear to me and have always been

i love the gryffindors in general and i have a special attachment to parvati and dean. i'm always trying to read more fics centering them or having them in more prominent roles. also lover oliver wood and my favorite weasley, percy, individually and as couple, i'd read a perciver anywhere, anytime

this is perhaps my most controversial fave (or is it reggie?) but dumbledore has always had and will forever have a very special place in my heart. he could be the worst person in the series (he isn't) and i would still love the whimsy diva of a war general. i need to read more with him. i refuse to watch or even learn about fantastic beasts

other than that i love the black family and i have an unreasonable affinity for narcissa out of everyone. i like alphard when he's an old queen. i'd eat up any sincere approach to orion and walburga. i think phineas is criminally underrated

the first war is arguably my favorite period and i'm interested in everything from that time. i'd read anything with moody, he's a rockstar and one my favorites as well. i like frank and alice and think they should be the protagonists more often. i'd read any interesting premise involving the order, but i tend towards my girls dorcas, marlene and emmeline. i unironically think mulciber and evan rosier are interesting. i love to hate crouch sr. and jr.

and you can't read the books without loving voldemort, i'm sorry, i don't make the rules and it's not my fault he has so much juice

Ok another confession I hate watching movies and shows because it's like mad inconvenient because I only have Netflix and they keep removing everything that's actually good and adding more seasons of big mouth (who watches that???) But I'm gonna try my best with this.

First thing on the list is TWD which I've watched like three seasons of (under duress by my best friend, but still) I honestly love it but I can't stick to long shows but if I become close to you (PULL THE TRIGGER ON THE GUN I GAVE YOU WHEN WE METTT) I'll probably have two people telling me to watch it so booo but whatever.

THE NOTEBOOK!!! I actually love rom-coms so much (does it count as a rom-com?) It's so beautiful YES YES YES!!!

Legally blonde??? Hell yeah!!! Have you listened to the musical? It's sososososo good omg. MAMA MIAAAAA possibly the best movie musical of our generation, it's coming to my country and I can't goooo, but it's still SOOO good, the only jukebox musical I'll ever listen to, ever.

Harry potter is an older interest of mine, but I've been thinking of getting back into it via marauders, but HERMIONE IS ACTUALLY THE BEST CHARACTER EVERR, I love Emma Watson for playing her she's the best actor ever she nailed her.

Readers are always so goated, but I actually haven't read a bunch of these books so I'm gonna try my best with these!

The first thing I noticed on this list was Haunting Adeline, which, not to be annoying is an offensive book, the S@ is honestly not it and when I first saw it on your page I kinda paused and wondered if I should add you but maybe it's just a preference I guess?

Ignite me!!! When I first stared reading booktok my sister had bought a bunch of random books and bought it from the middle of the series so yay! I've been wanting to actually read it for a little so I might, it was an interesting read even if I didn't understand anything about it.
