Actually I think there's a very simple reason why romance subplots are so common in fantasy novels (and also why shipping fanfics are so prevalent in fanfic) APART from the fact that ppl like romance and think it's sexy/emotionally involving etc. It's that a romantic subplot is one of the simpler emotion-based subplots you can include in a work in general. We've all seen a lot of them so we know the general shape, and the arc is "don't like each other/don't know each other/don't like each other That Way" to "now like each other very very much <3" which can be uplifting bc it's easy to root for ppl feeling positive emotions or greater investment in each other, especially if you like both characters.

Other types of relationship-based arcs can do similar things, of course. Forming friendships and teams, found family, finding a mentor or a parental figure, reconnecting with family. So you see those kinds of stories too. Of course, another advantage with a romance subplot is that it's easier to say when it's completed; symbols like a first kiss/defining the relationship/getting married are easier landmarks than trying to figure out how to say "yeah but now they're really really friends".

I've been very harsh on Änglagård, but I want to say this: I'm so glad it only gives us two songs that are about romantic love – and even of those, one is about two very sad people talking about their failed marriage.

An alternative Romanceless flag which uses the colors of the original Romanceless flag but follows the format of similar "-less" flags ( such as this Loveless flag and Heartless Aro ) more closely.

Romanceless can mean one who is devoid of romance, being unromantic, or one who is romantically loveless.

It's not exclusive to just Aromantic / Arospec individuals, though obviously many of us may find it useful or relatable.

Those who are Alloromantic / Allorospec, fluid / flux, or removed from the Aro / Alloro binary entirely ( such as Non-SAM, Unit, or Unlabeled individuals ) are welcome to use this! It's intentionally broad and I will not gatekeep this flag.
