hiya! so I was thinking about Peter Quill with an artistic reader (in the form of headcanons) bc omg i think that'd be absolutely adorable and ive been going in a spiral for him lately
Just a thought! You dont need to do it if youre busy, have a great week!
hii! omg yes I love it. and don’t worry me you and everyone else feels the same way😭 ive been defending him in comment sections for years so im glad he’s finally getting recognition he deserves. big up quill. I also did this first, as it was a fun sorta break in between other writing. thank you for requesting, hope you like it💌 have a great weekend also. xo

- he doesn’t always have the best attention span, but when it comes to you he could watch you paint/ draw for hours. it’s something that keeps him entertained
- he likes to ask questions/ communicate while you work “that’s cool, what does that do?” or “how did you do that?” feel like he’d be mesmerised watching the canvas come to life
- you both listen to his music while you do anything artsy, the combination is the best of both worlds
- but if he’s not watching you/ hanging around at the same time, you like to listen to his music so it feels like he’s still there. he’s silently caught you a few times and it makes him feel special that his music means so much to you
- he definitely brags to the other guardians about how talented you are (like tony and thor talking about their girls in age of ultron)
- I feel like he can be a great helper- if you’re at the easel, he stands next to you holding the things you need so you don’t have to keep bending/ reaching etc. or if you need a brush cleaned, he’d do it for you
- if you wanted to do pottery, he’d get rocket to make you a pottery wheel, whatever you needed, rocket will make
- if you live with him in his apartment on knowhere, he’s moved his things about so that you could paint by the window/ designated a space/ area for you to work at (he remembers watching bob ross a couple times when he was a kid, so he used the tips he learned and put them into practice for you)
- if and when he sees any kind of art materials on other planets, he definitely brings them back for you. over a while you’ve acquired quite a diverse set of tools that’s broadened the quality of your art
- I feel like he’d kind of pimp you out- would put your name out there to get more people to commission work from you
- you’re now the go-to that people come to when they want new things for their houses. a majority of people on knowhere have probably bought work from you
- you’ve made pieces for every guardian, something specific and detailed that has meaning to each individual (kind of like the holiday special) you’d be very creative and intricate in tailoring the work to the person
- mantis absolutely adores what you made. nebula was apprehensive at first but you caught her smiling when she thought you weren’t paying attention. drax goes into great detail when he describes what he loves about it, always using crazy big adjectives. rocket said he doesn’t care for art, but the way it’s displayed in his apartment tells you otherwise. and groot was super happy to have something made by you
- quill has treasured everything you’ve ever made him, he can be very sentimental so all the work you made is something he deeply appreciates. something minuscule you made at the beginning of the relationship, is kept in one of his memory boxes (like a flower made of tissue)
- maybe you’ve made things to honour his parents, using stories he’s told you into creating something beautiful (two separate pieces- one of meredith and one of yondu) they are something he has hung up and displayed in his apartment. I feel like it’s helped him deal with his grief- and over time he’s been able to look at the artwork without feeling sad. now he can smile when he sees their faces
- its definitely made him fall harder for you

i had a real Moment learning about the mushroom leather people actually. i came across this NYT article about it (unpaywalled link) that talked about how an artist, philip ross, was using mycelium, the root-like structures of fungi, in his artwork as a material essentially for creating sculptures, and then eventually he refined the process to make it a workable leather substitute without animal products or plastics and went into business with it, which already is wild because i love the idea of a weird art guy into mushrooms following his creative impulses all the way into inventing an industry that may advance the necessary transition into a more bio-aligned world. like he was making weird cool furniture to show in galleries and exhibits and now he's seeing if he can convince car manufacturers he can help them meet their environmental targets since apparently cars are the second biggest leather-using industry after footwear. but then while putting together a question item about this i went to the company's website and looked at their history page and it said that he got into the species of mushroom he started using for his art projects because he heard of their immune-supporting properties and started growing them for medicinal use when he worked as a hospice caregiver in san francisco during the AIDS crisis. i mean what the fuck. that's the harper pitt night plane to san francisco monologue in real life. like, jesus.

HYPERSOMNIA MARCH DEV LOG : "If you have love in your heart"
Hi! For all of you who follow HYPERSOMNIA, you should already know what the gist is here, but for those of you who are new, or just new to our tumblr, let me fill you in!
Tumblr media
For 2024, I am trying to release a dev log about HYPERSOMNIA once a month, may come earlier, may come a little late, but I'm doing this to help give insight on to how the game is going, and to give me motivation to work on the game.
First things first, sorry about the incomplete drawing for this month's log. I've been sitting on this drawing for months and haven't touched it, and I needed a drawing for this months log so I thought "Eh, what the hell."
For this month, things have been a bit up and down, I've been focusing on more smaller stuff in engine this month, and bigger stuff outside of engine. So there's not a lot that's been added but there is new stuff that I'd like to share. :)
I'd like to start with the smaller stuff first, since I feel like most logs I've started with the bigger stuff and kinda run out of steam by the end. So it'll be along the lines of "Small in-engine stuff > Big in-engine stuff > News/closing thoughts".
NOW LET'S GET TO THOSE UPDATES!
Lots of menu work has been done this month, which isn't very exciting sounding but it's nice to be getting this stuff over with.
HYPERSOMNIA has a smaller resolution than RPG Maker MV's default, and the thing about that is a lot of content in menus doesn't scale accordingly, leaving stuff to get cut off and preventing the player from accessing information.
Tumblr media
One of the things I've had to do is get the player's HP and HS to appear on the status screen. These usually appear on the main menu of the game, but since I use an alternate menu for screen space, they had to be relocated. (courtesy of SundialShark, I'm not familiar with JS so they've been a super big help with certain things in the game.)
Tumblr media
The game's title screen also saw a slight improvement, I found a plugin that replaces the windowed options on the title screen with pictures, making them more customized. The title screen artwork itself will be revised later, as I whipped it up as a placeholder.
Also, do you remember last month's dev log? Specifically, the part of it where I talked about the equip menu in battle? Well shortly after writing that dev log, it was finished!
Tumblr media
This works how you'd expect it to, you can equip/unequip eyes and give them to other party members. The only drawback to this is that touchscreen isn't fully supported I've been told, which is fine since this is a game intended for PC. It does work with controller though which is nice.
Speaking of battles, I've been working on special attack animations! I have the main 4's offense animations done.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My personal favourite is Jack's. Everyone else does it all cool but Jack aims like he's holding a gun which is cooler. I'll probably touch up Ross' animation, since it looks kinda weird to me. I think his head might be too small.
Also, would you believe me if I told you that isn't all the battle stuff that was done this month? This is where that "Big in-engine" stuff kicks in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE BACKGROUND SYSTEM HAS BEEN IMPROVED! (ALONG WITH ME DESIGNING SOME NEW ENEMIES!)
This took a bit of time to configure, but I replaced the old background system for a new one
(Which was originally set up with my buddy Majimjam of HYADES, awesome game that has a demo out RIGHT NOW!)
With Jengamon's EarthBound Backgrounds plugin, it's been really fun to just toy with it and see what I can make. I would try and run down how this works, but the funny thing is I don't even know how this works. Or, at least in full anyways. I know how to configure it and set up new presets for enemies.
That's pretty much all the in-engine stuff I've done this month, but I'm not out of stuff to talk about yet.
First, I recently wrote a thread on the RPG Maker Forums about HYPERSOMNIA, which you can read here!
Secondly, some of you might've seen this already but I decided to cut FIREBALL from the game's soundtrack fully.
There were a multitude of reasons as to why, but the biggest one is I just don't feel like FIREBALL fits HYPERSOMNIA anymore. The vision has shifted since 2021 and I feel like music for battles could reflect it better, so FIREBALL was scrapped.
The song was uploaded to my personal YouTube channel though, so you can still listen to it here.
Third, THE NEW TRAILER IS ALMOST DONE!
There's still a few things that need to be touched up, but the music and footage is all fully recorded! All that's left to do is throw it in the editor and refine it until it's finished.
I'm very proud of this trailer so far, and I think it'll blow every other trailer I've made out of the water. My goal for this trailer was to improve the editing and I think that's definitely one of the highlights for this trailer.
I'd really like to post a quick sneak peak, but everything about this trailer I feel will be such a surprise that I don't want to spoil it. You'll just have to wait for the Mother Direct!
Tumblr media
And that's it for this month! Slow but steady progress is how I'd sum up March. I'm definitely looking forward to the future. Mostly because I'm going to a restaurant with family later today, but next month will have more in store. Like my birthday! Big things coming.
Thanks for reading to the end of the dev log, same as always, these are fun to write. I appreciate you reading them!
If this is your first log you're reading, or even your first time seeing ANYTHING relating to HYPERSOMNIA, I got a whole bunch of links for you to check out if you wanna know more about me and my stupid little game.

Art Movements
Art movements, "schools", artist groups, and societies do not function in the same way as they once did. There were art movements in the earlier years of contemporary art but those too have gone the way of art history. In the late 20th to 21st centuries there are no art movements to speak of, due to globalization and the sheer volume and diversity of the art world. Even Conceptual Art, which endures to this day, is more of a term or category than a movement.
Some will argue that there are lots of contemporary art movements – Minimilism, Monochrome, and Participatory Art, to name a few. True, though I see these as a club with so many members that connection and cohesiveness are impossible to achieve. That isn't to say that's bad. Again, it's due to how large, diverse, and world-wide these movements are. Everyone doesn't know everyone as they did in Impressionism or Surrealism.
An example of Monochrome Art
Tumblr media
Robert Ryman (American, 1930-2019 • Ledger • 1982 • Enamelac paint on fibreglass, aluminium and wood • Tate Modern
l'm nostalgic about the art created before the 1950s. I like some of work done in the earlier movements of contemporary art — pop art is fun. The Fluxus Movement produced some cool stuff –à la Yoko Ono. Word Art is not my favorite, though it is unlike me to dismiss it as bad art because I've not seen much of it.
An example of Word Art
Tumblr media
Barbara Kruger (American, b. 1945) • Untitled (Your body is a battleground) • 1989 • photographic silkscreen on vinyl
An example of Participatory Art
I "participated" in this artwork – Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.). It was colorful, interesting, and fun but also very sad. I believe it was at The Whitney in New York. It's a pile of candy in confetti colored wrappings (In other installations the colors vary). It can exist in more than one location at the same time, starting with a specific weight 175 pounds (79 kg). Participants are encouraged to take one candy and the quantity diminishes. The artist, Félix González-Torres was a gay man whose partner, Ross Laycock, died of complications of HIV/AIDS in 1991. One art critic's interpretation of the art work was "the diminishment recalls how he (the artist's partner) wasted away before dying." Félix González-Torres himself died in 1996 of HIV.

What is your favorite contemporary art movement or individual artist? Please comment. You don't have to be an expert, you just have to know what you like. I'd love to hear from you!

Tumblr media
Holly Short
1983
Today was fucking bullshit. It was so fucking stupid, I almost don't want to make an entry about it, but my therapist claims it's good for my grief to vent my feelings, so, here I am. Venting my fucking feelings. And no. I don't feel better.
So, you want to know why today sucked. Today was my second day at the Academy. The LEP Academy.
I've always known I was going to be an officer, but lately, I've been compelled to do something more than LEPtraffic, or Immigration. Yesterday was already weird enough because I got tons of looks from all the beefheads, but then today, in my Criminal Investigations class, the professor asked us what our goals in the LEP were. Anyone that knows anything knows girls who join the LEP are destined for traffic, or some bullshit area of "policing". We never go further than that… Unless you're Wing Commander Vinyáya. And nobody is as cool as Wing Commander Vinyáya. She's a total babe. Definitely not me.
But anyway, I have other aspirations. Dad was Internal Affairs. Mom's LEPmarine. It's my destiny to be in the force, and if I'm gonna go in, it's go big or go home. So, I answer that I want to be in Recon. And I shit you not - everyone laughed, even the professor. The FUCKING professor.
Fuck.
Why can't a girl be Recon? We're not all airheads. Some of us are actually capable of handling ourselves. Mom always says my aim is deadlier than a stink worm too, so those townies don't know what they've got coming.
Shit. Said, not says. Mom is dead. Stupid mistake.
Whatever.
The only plus side to today was that I ran into Trouble Kelp. He's the hot Kelp brother. An idiot, but he has a good heart. He's a junior, and super famous for his scores. Everyone knows who he is, so you'd expect him to be a total glow slug, right? But he's actually really kind. Some guy tried to trip me in the hall, and before I could punch the daylights outta him, Kelp shoved him into the trash can and swore him off. It was totally cool. He'd make a good partner someday, I think.
OH! Back to Recon. Adding onto today's bullshit, I overheard some rookies going on and on about Commander Root. Apparently he's a tough nut to crack and hasn't ever had a girl in his unit, and he intends for it to stay that way. Well, too bad for him, because I've got my sights on Recon. I work alone, and fly alone. Nobody to bother me, no stinky males and their gross ear cheese. Just me, the wind, and the surface sky.
It's what mom and dad would want.
I hope they're proud.
Oh yeah, one last thing: it's my birthday today. I'm 62 today. Is it super lame that I put up pictures of mom and dad on the table with me? Just so, you know… I'm not alone?
Fuck. Duh. That's super lame.
Hey. I'm back. Don't mind the weird gap between pages. Didn't feel like writing for a bit so I took a nap. But I'm back.
Honestly? I'm a bit mad. And before you ask me in the session: about everything?
Being a girl is hard enough, right? 'cause I'm stuck in this gnarly place of not being pretty enough yet also not being "tough" enough to be accepted by the guys. And I just started. Why should my appearance fucking matter? I'm a fucking hotshot. I'm resilient. I already know how to pilot a shuttle. That's more than these maggots can do.
My dad would've known what to say. I didn't know him that long, really. But still, when I'd spaz out and tussle with other kids, he'd always have my back, and he always knew the right things to say. I wish I had that now, you know? I miss him.
I miss mom. But I don't want to talk about it. I don't want to talk about her death and I won't be forced into it either, k?
Oh yeah, duh. My original point. It's my 62nd birthday, and I'm all alone. There's supposed to be some junior thing at a pub in the city. Juniors. Not rookies like these dorks. Mom would kill me if I went.
Hah. Guess I should rebel and go make some friends then? Maybe Trouble will be there? Not that I'm into him or anything. Just a friend or two would be nice.
Anyway. I've got basics in the morning.
Night, journal. See ya.

don't get me started on museum or gallery dates with matty/ross omg
PLEEEEEEASE i yearn for this constantly, especially with matty :(( i also think this could connect so well to that earlier ask about you guys walking round the places you grew up together. like say you take him to a gallery/museum you frequented when you were younger or just in your spare time (for me personally, somewhere like kelvingrove in glasgow or maybe the national museum/gallery in edinburgh) and just lead him round by the hand, showing him your favourite exhibits and paintings and discussing them - i think he'd be so invested in what you had to say, and would really want to discuss them too but would struggle not to just stare at you lovingly while you talk so passionately and happily about the art (i believe in simp matty). and the same in reverse! i would love to hear matty talk about art he likes (or hates actually too lmao) in front of the actual artwork itself - he'd definitely ramble for a bit and then look at you smiling at him and be like "what?", and you'd say "nothing, i just especially love you when you're all animated and passionate about things" and make matty blush and pull you into a hug so he can hide his face in your neck. exploring new museums and galleries for both of you would be so fun, too, just leisurely walking around hand in hand and taking everything in, having lively debates about what you like and don't like and talking about the cool things you learned from new exhibits. and not to be That Bitch again, but i imagine (if the relationship is quite serious) that matty's mind would wander to the two of you taking your kids around places like that in future too :(( there's just something about dates in these places that really does elicit tenderness like that lol.
and we cannot forget about buying merch before you leave - as we all know, love is stored in the museum/gallery gift shop lmao. you'd definitely buy matty a print of his favourite artwork, or like a tea towel with it printed on or something lmao, and he'd buy you something related to your favourite bits as well (a bookmark or a fridge magnet or some other little trinket) - he also buys you a pen in every one of these places you go to, a) because you never have enough pens and b) so the two of you are reminded of all the lovely dates you've had whenever you look in your stationery drawer at home <3

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023) Review
Tumblr media
Why would they release this only a month after Across the Spider-Verse?? It’s as if they WANT to live in the shadows!
Plot: After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers. Their new friend, April O'Neil, helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of course are close to the hearts of many people’s childhoods, however I do not share that element of nostalgia. I am aware of the turtles and their pizza obsession, and I have unfortunately seen both of the Michael Bay produced ones, but nonetheless I walked into Mutant Mayhem with a very open mind. I am a fan of Seth Rogen and have also been enjoying this new style of animation that spawned from 2018′s Into the Spider-Verse, that steps away from the Disney/Pixar dominated oversaturated 3D computer animation and instead incorporates 2D and various interesting art styles from watercolours to comic-book sketches. Again, Spider-Verse started this and is still probably the most well executed one, however I personally also believe Klaus and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish have managed to take this new artwork animation style and make it their own. Mutant Mayhem again looks very good visually, and even though this one doesn’t really add much more to this animation style that Spider-Verse already did, there were still some creative choices made, like in many shots parts of the character drawings and the background sketches looking unfinished, as if a kid drew them, which I found to be a nice touch, especially with the movie’s youthful nature. But yes, the artwork is very close to Spider-Verse, and that is not the only comparison. Strangely enough the energetic music score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross hits near all the same notes and drum beats of Daniel Pemberton’s excellent Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack. Both are very similar, and again reiterated that TMNT: Mutant Mayhem gladly embraces that it exists solely due to the trend that Spider-Verse started.
What really works for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is that it actually accepts the fact that its titular turtles are teenagers. Voiced entirely by a youthful cast, the four central turtles have amazing banter and share that coming-of-age feel, making their friendship believable and entertaining to watch. At times it feels like you’re just hanging out with a bunch of friends who are being goofs. The supporting cast all do their part and are evidently having fun themselves. Ice Cube makes for a formidable villain who at first comes off really cool and charming, but then turns into an intimidating presence that manages to proudly proclaim rap lyrics. Jackie Chan is an inspired casting choice, as he brings an endearing warmth as the overprotective father-figure to the turtles, and his vocal performance felt genuine. There’s many famous actors that provide vocal additions to the shedload of characters in this movie, but I’d say Paul Rudd stood out the most as a crazy skater-bro who was foolishly funny.
Jeff Rowe (known for The Mitchells vs. The Machines) balances the themes of coming-of-age and acceptance really well with the fast-paced action-packed energy of Seth Rogen’s and Evan Goldberg’s script, and there’s plenty of laughs and colourful set pieces to keep kids entertained at the cinema this month. This is definitely a more younger audience aimed affair, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and at the very least is the best version of TMNT I have seen so far. Naturally my main comparisons are those Michael Bay movies and, well, that’s not a very high bar. But don’t worry, Mutant Mayhem provides plenty of entertainment value, popping imagery and mountains of ninja skills. And pizza, of course.
Overall score: 7/10

Sorry if you aren't taking these anymore, but what do you think of 'kanasebench'? The Nifl Julia art looks pretty, but it feels like a whiplash to see it compared to some of the other art?
(I don't actually have FEH pass, but I got Nifl Julia on the Binding World thing, and it startled me)
Oh trust me, I will ALWAYS take a FEH artist ask. It's so much fun to talk about these artists and what makes their art appealing (or not appealing depending on who the artist is and their work, lol).
And I'm actually really glad you brought up Kanasebench because it is SO not fair that they haven't been given a chance to draw another character, because just look at Julia:
Tumblr media
Oh gosh, she's just so darling, look at her little skirt grab, absolutely adding to the effect that this is a Resplendent outfit, this is the garb of a kingdom that she's never worn before but really seems to enjoy it.
I mentioned before with a few artists that it's really hard to judge just from looking at one character, but there's already so much pure skill we can see from this. Absolutely love the lightest shades of lilac/lavender/whatever purple shade used for the light part of the dress; it makes you think that part of the dress is white but the lilac tones are to complement Julia's natural color scheme with her hair. Kanasebench has also taken several vastly different colors (vivid shades of blue, muted shades of purple, white, and gold accents) and managed to beautifully blend it together; I complained earlier this year about Luthier's costume being an absolute mess of a color choice but Kanasebench has a fantastic grasp on color. Another thing I really want to point out is that I love how they structure the face and how they manage to blend this anime art style with keeping natural anatomy, that still manages to keep the character's youthfulness without straying too much into "bug-eyed pencil-neck anime child". No hate towards Sachie (although Hanusu is... okay), but Sachie's Julia artwork is too... I don't wanna say "too anime" because that's what this game is SUPPOSED to be, but it's just too standard anime style, kind of.
OH AND LOOK AT THE CRITICAL ARTWORK:
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THE SPECIAL EFFECTS. LOOK AT THE WAY THE DRESS SWIRLS. The action pose of Julia herself might not be super strong but the clothing gives it movement! And the simple art effects at the bottom with the ice are, like I said, simple, but effective! Kind of reminds me of Breath of the Wild's single character art pieces.
Now is there a bit of an issue with Kanasebench's artwork? I'd say... yes, but it's really just the one issue. And that's expressions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now granted I can see that they're trying to push for differing expressions, but I think simply because of their style, it's really hard to get something drastic without sabotaging the character's face. Though I will say in the neutral portrait, Julia's little smile coupled with that semi-curtsy is just... so stinkin' cute. I'd still like to see if this is something they'd be able to improve in the future... IF FEH EVER HIRES THEM AGAIN!!! >:( SERIOUSLY FEH, STOP ONE AND DONE-ING SOME OF YOUR REALLY COOL ARTISTS. YOU DID IT TO LEGENDARY SELIPH'S ARTIST, YOU DIDN'T GIVE BTHX ANOTHER CHANCE TO IMPROVE, AND YOU DROPPED HOMARE AFTER THEIR GORGEOUS EREMIYA ARTWORK. STOP. DOING. THAT.
Anyways, I'd say that because of how pleasant it is to simply look at this artwork, Kanasebench is very much a 9/10. You're definitely right about the whiplash because the first time I saw the artwork in Arenas I was REALLY thrown off. It's an incredibly drastic difference in style compared to other artists that you can't really say looks similar to someone else, but it's got so much charm to it. I think Julia was a good character pick for this artist, and if they draw again I think a good pick of characters would be Duo F!Robin with little M!Morgan, Genny, Sophie, Lysithea, or maybe a Ross alt to see how they draw boys.

i would say facing left... front facing is fun but Hard because then I very much get caught up in making shit symmetrical and it's annoying LOL
Tumblr media
I've never tried it myself but I really really love the look of charcoal... it's really easy to get really dramatic looking stuff w the medium and it is So cool
Tumblr media
I feel like saying "the face" is definitely cheating so in that case I'll say torso. or maybe this is an unpopular opinion but hands are pretty easy for me too . does hair count as a body part too ???
Tumblr media
I admire any art style that either leans heavily into the realism w/out falling into the uncanny valley and is also still recognizable and distinct as one's own style (alex ross' comic artwork is what comes to mind with this) or any artstyle that leans heavily into the stylistic (marc hempel, specifically his work on sandman is what comes to mind here) basically just. Any artstyle that goes into the two extremes I kinda strive for if that makes sense LOL. good stuff

The stories in this anthology varied in quality a bit, and some felt a bit young for me, despite not being YA per se. Still a good time, with a few especially memorable romps. Full review here.
Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection Vol. 1 ed. by Hope Nicholson - 4.5 stars
Great all around collection! My personal favorites were "Ochek" by David Robertson & Haiwei Hou, "Coyote and the Pebbles” by Dayton Edmonds & Micah Farritor, and “Home” by Ian Ross & Lovern Kindzierski & Adam Gorham & Peter Dawes.
Babel by R.F. Kuang - 4 stars
This was very much My Shit, but also could have benefited from being a duology or even trilogy instead of one book. I loved how stuffed it was with etymology and history, though some might find that more dense a read than they'd like. The shift from the relatively slow, observational pace of the beginning to the tense action after about 300 pages can be a little jarring. And I wish we'd had more fleshing out of the other characters and their relationships, as well as time spent to take the commentary on empire and colonization back further. As my first R.F. Kuang read, it was very enjoyable, though.
More detailed review on Goodreads or The StoryGraph.
Moonshot Vol. 2 ed. by Hope Nicholson - 5 stars
It felt like the project really hit its stride here. Lots of great stories and art. My favorites of the bunch were “Worst Bargain In Town” by Darcie Little Badger & Rossi Gifford, “Water Spirits” by Richard Van Camp & Haiwei Hou, and “Journeys” by Jeffrey Veregge.
Current September Reads
Back down to the appropriate number of reads: The Library Book, The Physical TBR Book, and The Project Book.
Moonshot Vol. 3 ed. by Elizabeth LaPensée, Ph.D. & Michael Sheyahshe
As with the previous volumes, more comics, illustrated stories, and artworks by Indigenous creators. This time edited by past contributors! Over halfway through, so it won't take long to finish.
Lone Women by Victor LaValle
Things have gotten intense in ways I didn't expect it to go (not a negative!). About a third of the way through, should be easy to finish this month.
Speaking Bones by Ken Liu
Had some neat revelations and some frustrating mistakes on the part of characters who should've known better so far. Only at p. 142 out of 1047. 💀
Additional September Plans
White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link
This is on its way to my local library branch, so I'll be picking it up soon! It's Kelly Link's new story collection, just released this March. I look forward to more of her strange and wonderful works.
Loot by Tania James
Mentioned in my previous update, when I received it from the publisher's Goodreads giveaway. Going to start it once I finish Lone Women.
Upcoming Releases
A Crown So Cursed by L.L. McKinney (September 19th)
Third book in the Nightmare-Verse series, inspired by Alice in Wonderland stuff. I'm not always into YA fantasy, but I've been having a great time with this series!
The Pomegranate Gate by Ariel Kaplan (September 26th)
Adult historical fantasy set during the Inquisition, featuring Sephardic Jewish folklore. As Toba's people flee rather than forcibly convert, she's separated and ends up in a realm of powerful beings. Naftaly seeks to rescue her, encountering even more dangerous secrets along the way. Warning that it is the first in a series, and word on the street is that there's a cliffhanger ending.
So that's what's going on this month for my reading. If you read this far, know that I love you! 💕

Ross Ashton Artist Research
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ross Ashton is an artist born in Sheffield. He is someone who trained in photography and theatre, later on shifting to moving in video and slide projection. He then went on to specialising in High Power Projection, which is what he does now and is the focus of my research.
This specific piece is called 'The Garden of Eternal Spring', which is a projection in which he created for an arts festival. The images being projected onto here are images from original Roman mosaics, frescoes, (a process which requires painting with water based paint onto plaster so that the paint becomes an important part with the plaster) and statues from Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy. Included in the work are interiors of villas with birdsong environment recordings made in the Garden of the House of Octavius Quartius. From this you can see that the artwork stands up to its name well. It's projected onto a wall, using projection mapping, where you plan out and manipulate where the projection will go onto, so that you can get it exactly where you want it to be. I think it looks really cool this way and gives it a nice aesthetic.
It's a very bright and colourful work of art. There is a blend of many vivid colours together and bold images. For this reason, I really enjoy looking at the piece. It has a happy and playful feel to it, to where it almost feels like something you would see on the wall of a playground for children. It very well carries out its intention of feeling like a garden of eternal spring, since it's the first thing my mind runs to when I see the work. Even if I didn't know the name of the piece, it would still scream a spring garden regardless. Being a projection allows it the chance to be animated, so that objects can move and the water can flow as if it was real. This gives it an opportunity to feel more realistic and authentic, as if you were really there. It allows it to stand up to its name a lot better.
I want to use projection in my own project. Since I am going to create a video of moving planets and images, I want to project it onto my planets and board that I will make. I can use this as inspiration, since there is a very distinct style here where the theme is clearly made. Here it is gardens, whereas mine is space. They are projecting onto a wall and mine is a board, which is basically just a smaller version of the wall. It's going to be moving too, which is a great use of projecting.
I think that projections are good ethically, because it's not a physical material that goes to waste. Instead, it is digital and can be used whenever you want, wherever you want. However, the issue here is that projection requires a lot of electricity, which requires energy. That energy is not renewable, so it cannot be reused once it's gone. Although my projection isn't as intense as his, Ashton's projections are very high power, so the energy that is used up is very high. Some people would argue that it isn't worth the waste of materials just for a projection. I think it looks very nice though, and that sometimes it's worth the energy for something so cool. They could also argue that his concept is just stolen from the mosaics, frescoes and statues. Personally, I don't think it matters because they are old pieces of history which deserve to be given recognition. Since they are so old, it also doesn't matter if someone uses it for something like this either. For safeguarding practices, you would have to be careful that nobody is directly underneath or close to the projector, in the case that it explodes or falls on their head. You would end up with serious damages and lawsuits from something as heavy as that. You also have to be careful that wires are pushed away from where the crowd is, as well as being taped to the floor so that nobody trips over it, injuring themself, equipment and ruining everything. You'd also have to keep food and drink away from the electrical equipment, in the case of spillages, resulting in fires and electric shocks.
