I'm a Tony Molina (San Francisco, California) fiend. Since Micah and I saw him many years ago at the Great American Music Hall, he's been a top ten favorite. We've posted about Ovens and other side projects like The Lost Days and Trainwreck Riders.

I don't think I ever posted about "Embarrassing Times" even though it is an older Molina release. I bought it on cassette years ago (same time I bought the "West Bay Grease" cassette with its stunning version of "Everything Flows" which Molina played at GAMH). "I'm Not Down" is the only song currently available and it has a decided Dinosaur Jr. feel. But Molina's electric sound always dips into Teenage Fanclub as well. And Molina reminds me a bit of Ira Kaplan in his love of covers. The Dead Milkmen, Camper van Beethoven and Roy Wood all get a Molina treatment here.

This LP reissue is being handled by Catholic Guilt Records (created in San Francisco, but apparently based in Atlanta, Georgia).

Blue Sky - Quail What if you made a pop song, played it with a big band/rock band hybrid, and filled it with jazz solos. This band is tragically underrated, they're like a tighter version of Sammy Rae & The Friends imo.

What's Going On? - J-Music Ensemble Jazz cover of a track from Persona 5 with all the acid jazz and funk leanings of the original, executed by the legendary Patrick Bartley himself on sax, complete with two separate solo-trading battles and finishing with an insane percussion solo. My favourite song of all time if I had to pick. If you like VGM or funk, you'll love this.

Strasbourg/St. Denis - Roy Hargrove One of the most legendary jazz performances of all time. If you're looking for 'classic' jazz to get into, this is the piece and, more specifically, the performance that got me into jazz (It had to be split into two parts to avoid the youtube censor gods)

Lingus - Snarky Puppy Do you like rock? Do you like funk? Do you like songs that sound like they could be in a really groovy but slightly sinister Mario or Sonic level? Do you like pieces of music that are so good they got a standing ovation in the middle of the song? Do you like synth solos so good that multiple famous pianists said it made them feel sufficiently inadequate as to want to quit entirely? Well, you should. Also featuring the legendary Larnell Lewis (my current pick for best drummer in the world, any genre), who had never heard this song until the plane over to the recording studio; this was recorded the next day.

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 - Hiromi I wanted to showcase one of a whole subgenre of jazz interpretations of classical music, and while there are other individual pieces which stand out to me more, there are few performers with such incredible talent and virtuosity as Hiromi. While she does have a number of classical-inspired pieces, that's far from her one-trick, and her original work and in particular her Tiny Desk are well worth checking out (the first Tiny Desk song is so incredibly funky!). If you like this, please also check out Regina Carter, she is simply incredible.

TUCSON, Ariz. – On Sept. 15, a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging 51 firearms-related offenses against 10 men, following a multiagency investigation, which included the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations.The following individuals indicted are: Julian Canastillo Daniel Canastillo Molina Omar Trujillo, Jr. Carlos Martinez Nicolas Meraz Timothy Scott Waltermire, Jr. Tylor Cody Joiner Roy Glen Cline III Corey Creasia David Rey Gonzalez The indictment alleges that the 10 individuals were members of a Tucson-based firearms trafficking organization. The investigation leading to their indictment involved a series of firearms transactions that resulted in firearms being seized in the Republic of Mexico. An indictment is simply a method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. All 10 individuals charged in the indictment face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Angela W. Woolridge, Matthew C. Cassell, and Craig Russell, District of Arizona, Tucson, are handling the prosecution. HSI is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), responsible for investigating transnational crime and threats, specifically those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, travel, and finance move. I watched Netflix show Julie and the Phantoms, and I know is basically a teen/kids show; but I was such a huge fan of the Brazilian version while I was growing up, so the nostalgia hit me.

First thing that I loved was the fact that the protagonist and her family are latinos. They even got Carlos Ponce, an actor from telenovelas latinas to play Julie's dad. That's super cool! Another super thing cool here, is that Carlos Ponce is Puerto Rican, just like Madison Reyes, the girl that plays Julie. Love that they respected nationalities. Also, the difference in skin tones and eye colors in Julie's family; believe me, as someone who comes from a latina family where there is a mix between green eyes, black eyes, hazel eyes... caramel skin tone and milky white skin tones... That difference felt so accurate for me.

The ghosts, they are such a group of annoying little brothers and I love them so much! I really like how they gave more screen time on the boys so they could tell their story (that's something they didn't do much in the original). They really acted like they have been friends for a long time - the jokes, the glances, the comebacks... Something tells me this trio of dork ghosts are going to be stuck in my head for a long time.

The music!! Even after all this years I still remember all the songs in the original show, and it seems it's going to be the same with this one. The songs are so catchy and full of beautiful lyrics. Their voices are amazing, that cast is really talented.

So yeah... Is a really good show, Netflix did a good thing with the latin representation, the story full of friendship, family and love, plus the beautiful music. Hope they give us more seasons!!

PD: Can we appreciate the fact that Kenny Ortega has been trying to add LGBTI characters to his kids musical shows since HSM, but he always received a no or not yet. So, the first thing he does when he finally receives a yes, is add a gay boy as one of the protagonists and a LGBTI relationship that is important to the plot. Iconic.

In Texas right now, officials are seeking to censor books. It is under the guise of an "investigation" of books that could make students feel "uncomfortable." These books deal with race and sexuality, and include titles such as Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (a book about two gay Mexican boys discovering themselves and falling in love, "Pink is a Girl Color" ...and Other Silly Things People Say (a children's book to show kids they can express themselves however they want), and How Prevalent is Racism in Society?

According to NPR news, at least 11 of these books discuss Roy V Wade, race, feminism, and sexuality. This inquiry is likely illegal, and a "disturbing and political overreach into the classroom" (Ovidia Molina, president of the Texas State Teachers Association). However, it sheds a glaring light on what lawmakers in Texas believe about minorities. Just a few weeks after the infamous abortion ban, we're struck with this "inquiry."

The lawmaker, Representative Mike Krous, is likely going to run for Texas Attorney General, challenging Ken Paxton. This move is him creating a profile for himself. A name. It's him gaining attention before he likely runs for office.

He is doing this so that privileged students don't feel uncomfortable. He is doing it so straight, cis, white men get to keep their comfortable place in society. He is doing it because he is a cis straight white man.

I wish I could offer solutions, but what I will say is this: if you're old enough to, when the time comes, vote against him. Yes, this search is probably illegal. but it shows the values of Texas.

Keep. Reading. Read every book, support your local and school libraries. Show the people in charge that censoring books is a terrible move, and we as voters and taxpayers will not stand for it. Plus, you get to expand your horizons and learn more about the world around you. Keep reading. Prove them wrong.
