Accessability

We are in 2023, why do we still need to have this discussion? 

If you're an icon or gif maker and make resources smaller than 100x100, then you should consider also releasing the same set but as 100x100 or 125x125 so more people can use your resources. Because when saving an icon/gif you can choose what size you save it as. Which means you could easily make them bigger from the start and then when saving them make the second set of the size you desire. But PLEASE think about other people who want to use your resources but can't because they are too small. Then also try and use psds that make it easy to tell what is in the icons, so not too grainy, and or contrasting colours on the icon so you can’t make out who it is, or what facial expression they’re making. Like the point of icons or gifs is to be able to make out your characters face, what they’re looking like for the moment of the reply. 

I should also mention i am a resource maker and run the blog thelovelyicons

It’s the same with themes, please use fonts that are considered accessible, and don’t use double small, double spaces, or fonts smaller than 12pt. Because those options make it harder for people to read. Especially people with disability, and double spaces make it so screen readers can’t read the posts. 

Then there is the themes, don’t make them too small, or too busy. Make sure your links are easy to find, like a drop down menu, or straight up just a link bar under your description or next to the description. And for example, make sure your text is dark enough, or light enough to contrast against your background colour. 

Something similar for graphics, make sure it’s easy to tell what’s in them. So again, don’t make them too busy, or use psds that make them hard to tell what’s in the graphic you’ve made. Like the promo graphic.

So please consider that what is accessible for you, is NOT accessible for everyone. 

On a side note, I’m not considered disabled. However, I have friends who are, and some of the aesthetics of today, make it hard for said friends to use and interact with a majority of blogs on this site. Which saddens me a lot, because I want them to be able to experience this place as much as I can.

PSA: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BLACKLIST TAGGING

About Tumblr's Filtering Options:

Tumblr's tag filtering can only filter out the exact tag as is actually on the post.

Wildcards (*) do not work with tumblr's tag filtering system. As such, blacklisting #*example* to catch as many possible different tags as possible doesn't work. Even if it did, it would also then pose the same false positive issue as content filtering. Exact wording is important!

Correct spelling is necessary for tag filtering to work. Do not censor your tags.

Symbols and fancy copypaste fonts do not usually work in the tag filtering system.

Neither do they tend to work in URLs, meaning your tags might not work for navigation on your own blog.

Tumblr's post content filtering searches for exactly what the user asks to be filtered.

This may lead to false positives if the filtered word is part of another, unrelated word (example: posts about "writers" will be filtered for people who block "rite").

Tumblr's post content filtering is limited to 200 filtered words and/or phrases.

Both systems only support adding filters one at a time, and only to one system at a time. This can be both time-consuming and/or exhausting for some people to do, whereas it takes less time and energy for you to tag in a simplified manner.

How Many, Many People Wish Content Warnings To Be Tagged:

Nothing more, and nothing less. If your posts even mention a thing, simply tag it as that thing, because each extra word you add to your tags is another tag that has to be filtered.

It is more helpful to have it tagged as the full content itself for filtering, and you state in the body of the post and/or in additional tags that it is only a mention, vaguely referenced, etc. rather than explicit descriptions and/or details.

How big were the land bridges your Magma created?

Uhhh. Pretty significantly big. I tried scribbling them in on a map of Hoenn. There was the big one, and then an island that had non-land bridges (so normal bridges) that connected Sootopolis to the mainland.

Accessibility within the RPC

How we can make it a better place for everyone. These tips are coming from a accessibility educator and web tester. It's not comprehensive, but meant to give you a crash course. Especially on the most common RPC trends.

General

The more you deviate from standard English writing, the more people are going to be less likely to be able to read and interact with you. People with disabilities, neuro-divergence, or even normal people whose time is limited will be effected with each deviation.

While tools exist to make these things easier to curate someone's experience, their functionality is limited. The large majority of them work by modifying standard English sentence structure. They tend to break or not function properly otherwise.

Some screenreaders for example struggle with all lowercase/uppercase text, double/multi spacing between words, lack of punctuation, etc. They will end up reading the text back in very odd ways.

Color can be make it difficult as well. The themes on Tumblr are varied. Your writing partner could be using these theme and your colored text is nearly impossible to read because of their theme. There are also color contrast issues for people with varying degrees of color blindness.

Accessibility is not one size fits all. Talk with your writing partners about their specific needs.

Tips for a more accessible blog and replies

Look for themes / carrds that are W3G compliant.

Don't use all lowercase text in your replies ( lapslock ).

Don't use all uppercase text outside of well-known acronyms.

Don't put multiple spaces between your words.

Use punctuation in your sentences.

Don't use color in your blog's text.

Use themes / carrds that say what the button/link is for. I, II, III, IV don't really give an indication of what's there. List it out: Rules, Muses, Connections, etc.

Make sure your theme uses at least 16px font sizing. Tumblr's post small font is 13px which is below the standard. The regular font however fits.

Don't make important links or link context like text appear on hover. A mobile device can't see it. Someone who is keyboard only can't either.

Again this isn't comprehensive, but it will give you a start. This is to help be more inclusive with your replies and blogs. This isn't to shame anyone for their aesthetics, but to point out things we can all do to make the RPC more accessible.

What if I like my aesthetics and don't want to change?

That's fine. Just understand it means fewer people can read, process, or comprehend your writing. Better yet if you don't want to switch and instead compromise? Make it very clear in either your rules, pinned post, carrd, etc that you will absolutely switch to regular formatting upon request.

This will help bridge the gap that people with fewer spoons to reach out over this will feel more comfortable doing so.

At the end of the day when we make our replies and RP blogs accessible for those who need it, we make it more accessible for everyone.

I feel like I get more and more pissed off anytime I watch q!Bad make a move. So here’s the rant after seeing the clip and following with what @/daisyychainssj said about Leo’s Ninho room:

Why on god’s green earth would he allow Bagi into Leo’s room and allow her to grab the warp into the room.

Yeah maybe it was to do with the size of the room but maybe they could have you know waited and asked to check Richas’ room or waited until her parent or Leo was online.

He also knows full well that there is hollow walls inside the Ninho that could be turned into unofficial/temporary rooms for those eggs and that Leo’s room doesn’t have to be touched at all.

But also since he remembers enough about the Ninho and how it works with his memory loss then he goddamn knows the significance of those rooms and he just broke the main fucking rule.

Which is that the ninho rooms are SAFE SPACES FOR THE EGG THAT OWNS THE ROOM, that ONLY the egg, their parents and TRUSTED individuals can reach.

Do Leo and Bagi know each other?? Hmm that’s looking like a solid no. How well does Leo know the new eggs? Wait they don’t know and neither does Leo because they just recently met. Do they forget Leo is shy and not always social? yes she trust the eggs she knows but how often does she get online for anyone but her family?? Looking like about 5% which is usually because Foolish or Roier have outside factors stopping them from taking care of her.

Also he’s not her parent, he doesn’t get to make decisions for Leo just because he took care of her like 2 or 3 times and he knows her parent. That’s stupid and demeans Foolish’s parenting.

In conclusion, Bad should have never stepped foot in Leo’s room with Bagi today. It makes no sense lore wise or even just him showing her. Despite his “respect” for all the eggs, he really needs to check himself first before he does anything. Because any time he’s messed with an eggs stuff it’s always been Leo and sorry but Leo isn’t Foolish. That dynamic should be keep completely separate and to say this isn’t disrespect is a lie because it is.

This isn’t even like bad roleplay anymore it’s just disrespect because how in lore will any of them know about it unless bagi uses it in front of them.

Oswald Cobblepot, commonly known as “The Penguin.”

Morel’s target.

Morel is silent as he follows Cobblepot. Father told him that the inferior bird was “tryin ta date someone, but then gettin’ pissy when he got excited about somethin’ and proved he ‘as more of’a personality than just ‘is pretty face,” so Morel is going to scare him.

Well, terrify is a better word for what Morel is going to do.

Finally, Cobblepot enters an old, grimy apartment building not too far from the Bowrey. He has enough money for something better, Morel knows, but this was all he could get on such short notice.

The man’s apartment is on the fourth floor. Morel quietly scales the side of the building and cracks open a window to the apartment, slipping inside. Cobblepot doesn’t notice them.

Morel is silent as he sneaks behind the couch his target is face-planted on.

“Beware the Court of Owls”, he rasps, the sound seeming to come from all sides. (So what is he installed tiny speakers all over the room beforehand for extra Spooky Factor. You can’t prove shit)

“That watches all the time,”

Cobblepot has sat up now, scanning the room for intruders.

“Ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch,”

“Where are you?! Show yourself!” Cobblepot shouts. Morel can hear the fear tracing his words.

“Behind granite and lime.”

Cobblepot is standing now, scanning the room for anything amiss. He doesn’t spot anything.

“They watch you at your hearth,”

“Is this about the lounge? I didn’t blow it up! That was all Eddie’s fault-“

“They watch you in your bed,”

Cobblepot is shaking now.

“Speak not a whispered word of them,”

Morel draws two of his knives, the sound echoing around the room.

“Or they’ll send the Talon for your head.”

Morel flips out of his hiding spot, landing on the back of the couch with a knife in each hand.

“Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot.”

Morel didn’t go quite so far as to put on the old costume, but he is wearing all black and a specifically painted mask, so it’s not real far off.

“You have been weighed,” Morel moves closer. “You have been measured,” Closer still. “And you have been found wanting.”

Cobblepot still stands frozen five or so feet in front of Morel.

“The Court has sentenced you to die.”

Before their target can react, Morel dashes forward and jumps to draw a long, shallow line across his throat. Nothing that would require anything more than neosporin and a bandaid.

“But not quite yet.”

And then he’s gone, disappeared into the night.
