Seems the reveal of unexpectedly muscular and toned is one they've gone back to again and again with Ned Flanders, Groundskeeper Willie, Snake, Principal Skinner and wonder if you had to pick some more Springfieldians besides everyone? Plus there's usually an story reason at least initially such Ned Flanders getting cast as Stanley Kowalski or Snake luring Gloria the Cop away from Mr. Burns or Skinner attracting Hallmark Channel executive and unsure on Willie's reasoning at first beyond the gag.
I'm not sure I'm 100% following you, esp the second half of the message
but yes it is interesting and kinda funny how some characters are revealed to have extremely fit bods
I think Ruth Powers also belongs in that catagory; i was not expecting all those muscles from her!

The Sign in Sydney Brustein’s Window
No, “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” is not some amazing rediscovered masterpiece. But yes, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan make it worth seeing, especially for its promising but deeply flawed first act.
“The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” was Lorraine Hansberry’s 1964 follow-up to her Broadway debut five years earlier, “A Raisin in the Sun.” She worked from her hospital bed while battling pancreatic cancer, mining rewrites during rehearsals. The play went on to run three months on Broadway and closed two days before Hansberry died at age 34 on Jan. 12, 1965. Revivals have been rare in the intervening years, and this starry one that opened Thursday on Broadway at the James Earl Jones Theater makes it clear why. The production had previously played at the Brooklyn Academy of Music earlier this year.
It’s difficult to imagine more engaging performances than those being given by Isaac and Brosnahan. They portray the young and troubled married couple that lives in Greenwich Village and are repeatedly called “bohemians.” Sidney is a political activist who goes from one failed entrepreneurial gig to another. Iris is a waitress who longs to be an actress. They’re in love, and from the way Isaac and Brosnahan go after each other, it’s evident the sex is great on a scale of Stella and Stanley Kowalski.
When we meet Sidney and Iris, however, there’s more quarreling than lovemaking going on. Sidney is quickest with the insults. Put him in a room with another person, and there’s bound to be a fight. Iris is spared only when other victims wander into their apartment, and they include Sidney’s young ex-Communist friend (Julian De Niro), his conventional uptown sister-in-law (Miriam Silverman), the gay upstairs-neighbor playwright (Glenn Fitzgerald), an avant-garde artist who is designing Sidney’s recently acquired newspaper (Raphael Nash Thompson) and a leftist political candidate (Andy Grotelueschen), whom Sidney somehow finds time to manage.
When Isaac and Brosnahan are onstage alone, “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” delivers the theatrical power of Ruth and Walter Lee Younger’s tragically compromised marriage in “A Raisin in the Sun.” Both couples can’t begin to fulfill the American Dream that’s been jammed into their respective heads.
The first act of “Sidney Brustein’s Window” lasts 90 minutes, and about 45 minutes of it is the production’s most compelling as Isaac and Brosnahan love and slug it out under Anne Kauffman’s direction. There is another 45 minutes, however, when Sidney and Iris interact with the other characters, all of whom should go back to the Herb Gardner comedy from which they came. Most cringe-worthy is Silverman’s conservative sister Mavis, a doppelgänger for the conservative brother Nick Burns in “A Thousand Clowns,” which opened on Broadway two years before Hansberry’s play.
Since Sidney and Iris’ marriage essentially ends at the end of Act 1, there’s no action left to dramatize during the almost-as-long second act. Iris disappears for most of its 80 minutes, and Isaac is reduced to a drunk who listens while the supporting characters are given a moment – a very extended moment – to rant about racism (De Niro), an unfaithful husband (Silverman) and the emptiness of success (Fitzgerald).
A new character (the barely intelligible Gus Birney) enlivens things a bit because she looks and acts like a streetwalker (costumes by Brenda Abbandandolo). Her outfit and hair (by Leah Loukas) don’t lie, and after 15 minutes, this prostitute with a heart of tin has committed suicide in the Brustein bathroom. As records go, it may be the fastest suicide in the history of the theater.
And there’s something else that’s phony about this cliché of a character. How could her fiancé (De Niro) not know that his girlfriend, made up for “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” is not having sex with other men for money? Racism may be the least of this guy’s problems.
Before this tragic episode inspires way too much onstage analysis, the prostitute is invited upstairs by the gay guy so she can watch him and his new boyfriend have sex. Fitzgerald manages to be wonderfully enigmatic in his request, while Isaac acts drunk and Kauffman, for her part as director, distracts us from the absurd theatricality of it all by cleverly bringing Brosnahan, De Niro and Silverman into the audience so they can observe the action in silence. They’re a kind of silent chorus, which relates back to something Mavis has told Sidney about her Greek-American father. Hansberry’s play is chockfull of references to all sorts of mythological characters.
Sidney and Iris reunite at the end so she can tell him what a fool he was to back the wrong political candidate. Why a would-be actress with no political chops knows this and Sidney doesn’t is not explained despite “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” lasting nearly three hours.

Just a little detail I noticed (without really knowing what to make of it, and I don't know if it is in some behind-the-scenes book or has been discussed before): The song playing in the background when Tina brings Newt and Jacob into her apartment is "You're the Cream in my Coffee", written in 1928 by Ray Henderson , Buddy DeSylva und Lew Brow:
youtube
I'm not completely sure which recording was used for the film, but I did a little bit of research and I think the song playing in the background could be the recording with Ruth Etting, made in 1929:
youtube
I think it's interesting that they chose to include a song that hadn't yet been written at the point in time the film is set. While I believe it to just be inaccuracy (or artistic licence, if you will), there is also a slight possibility that they did it on purpose because this song is somehow important. In this case, I would suggest a closer look at the lyrics:
Tumblr media
To me, they don't seem to have an obvious connection to (or clues about!) the plot- Maybe I'm missing something here, but I think the thing about this song is the atmosphere it creates. It's a love song, foreshadowing the feelings that will grow between Queenie and Jacob, and Tina and Newt. (I feel like this song is more linked to Queenie though because it's the first time we - and Jacob - get to see her.)
But maybe the most important the song is its sweet and catchy melody. It creates an homey, cozy feeling that this flat, as small as it may be, is a home. While the lyrics are not a masterwork (maybe they are even a little bit ironic? Who would like to be somebody's Worcestershire?) I think they also show that the Goldsteins are rather down-to-earth people, leading a simple life without luxury - after all, the song is about necessities.
I don't want to over-interpret this, but I still think it's interesting that using this song was very much conscious choice (although it created an anachronism! But maybe I'm more concerned with historical correctness the people who made this film, wouldn't be the first time). I don't think this is really leading anywhere... but maybe somebody here has a better idea?

Losing Your Memory - a Jacob/Queenie sneak-peek!
Tagging: @pinkdiamonddolphin
This isn’t part of my fanfic-verse – it’s an AU to that, just exploring the idea. Beware, it’s gonna be angsty!
The Kowalski Children:
Tobias “Toby” – 15th October 1929 – 11 Daisy – 7th April 1931 – 9 (going on 10) Abel and Ruth (twins) – 20th November 1933 – 6/7 Elijah “Eli” – 28th January 1939 – 1 (nearly 2)
Okay, guys, so it’s a work-in-progress; things may change, but other than that…enjoy!
Ruth and Abel were the first to be escorted into the interrogation room by a MACUSA official, and both twins clambered to greet him eagerly; Jacob had to hide his tears at the sight of them – he couldn’t help it. The thought of not being able to remember them hurt him.
“Papa!” Ruth exclaimed, face brightening at the sight of him; she threw her arms around his middle, clinging tightly. “Are we going home now, Papa? It’s cold and boring here – don’t like it.”
He found himself swallowing, trying to think of words he could use. “Not exactly… See, things are…are kinda complicated…”
“Why are they?” She asked, frowning in confusion; she was Queenie’s mirror image, from her blonde curls to her blue eyes. “We have to go home.”
“You guys’ll go back home,” Jacob hurried to reassure her. “And your Ma, she’ll come with you…but I’m afraid I ain’t gonna be around for a while.”
Ruth looked simply appalled by this. “But you have to come home, Papa – it’s not home if you’re not there!”
“No, I know,” He said thickly; he had to keep it together, he reminded himself, had to keep it together for them. “But things ain’t that simple.”
“Is it ‘cause you’re not magic like us?” Her eyes were wide. “But we don’t care ‘bout that, Papa… Besides, you’re magic too, ‘cause you make the best pastries and you make us laugh!”
Abel had remained silent – no surprise there – but now he started to bite his lip. “Don’t say goodbye to us, Papa! Please!”
His time was running out – he could hear the guards shuffling outside – so he put his hands on each of their shoulders. “I know, I know; this ain’t fair. I’m real sorry…but you guys, you’re gonna grow up and be amazing wizards, and you’ll go to that big fancy school in Massachusetts-”
“I don’t wanna go to Massachusetts!” Ruth cried, tears starting to stream down her cheeks. “Wanna stay with you, Papa!”
“Please,” Abel begged, looking frightened. “Please don’t go!”
“I know, I don’t wanna go either,” Jacob admitted. “But I gotta, I got no choice. I need you guys – all of you – to watch out for each other…and your Ma too. Your Ma’s gonna need you.”
The two guards entered; both twins immediately knew and clung to their father desperately. Jacob wanted nothing more than to hold them tight and keep them safe, but he knew that this was for the best – it was to keep Queenie and the kids safe, his top priority.
All the same, hearing their wails as they were led away made his heart sink into his stomach.
Toby and Daisy were shown inside just minutes later, both looking rather anxious. The guards announced that they had a few minutes before closing the door behind them; as soon as the door clicked shut, Daisy was rushing forwards to embrace him, already weeping, while Toby gnawed on his lip.
“It’s not fair!” His daughter complained through her tears, shaking her head.
“We didn’t tell them anything, Pa,” Toby stated. “We were silent when they asked questions, didn’t say anything to get anyone in trouble-”
“I know, I know,” Jacob sighed, and he found himself hugging Daisy closer to himself tightly. “I told ‘em I’d come quietly… I know this is hard, but you guys, you gotta be real brave for me, alright?”
Daisy looked up at him miserably. “I don’t feel brave.”
“You’re the bravest girl I know,” He told her sincerely, wiping away her tears with his sleeve. “I know you guys are gonna look after the twins and Eli, but I want you to also look out for your Ma too. Your Ma’s gonna be sad too, and she’s gonna need you guys to be there for her.”
“This is wrong,” Toby muttered, and his eyes were glistening as he tried to stop himself from crying. “We haven’t done anything…this law is stupid and wrong.”
“Yeah, it is,” Jacob agreed, forcing himself to smile half-heartedly – for their sake. “But it really ain’t so bad. It’s like waking up…like getting washed in the rain. I won’t even know a thing.”
His daughter gave a choke. “You’ll forget us…you can’t forget us, we’re your kids!”
“Maybe you can run away, Pa,” His son said quickly, suddenly looking hopeful. “We could all run away!”
Jacob shook his head. “No. No running away. You guys deserve better than to be running all the time – it’s for the best, for everyone.”
“No, it’s not!” Daisy disagreed angrily. “How can you say that, Papa?! Everything will be horrible without you! Mama will miss you, and we’ll miss you, and it won’t be right!”
“I know, I’m sorry,” He apologized. “I guess I’m not real good with words…what I’m trying to say is that you kids, you need to be able to go to that school; you should be able to live and have fun, not running ‘cause of me.”
“We’d rather be on the run than not have you, Pa,” Toby declared, and he furiously wiped at the tears in his eyes with his jumper sleeve. “Please, Pa, there’s got to be a way.”
The door clicked open from across the room, and the two MACUSA guards entered. Daisy’s grip on her father’s waistcoat tightened and she buried her face into his stomach, as if she could hide; Toby immediately reached out for his father’s arm, as if it might deter to the guards from separating them.
It didn’t – both children yelled and screamed as they were forcibly dragged from their father, struggling against the guards who were holding onto them. Jacob found himself crying at the sound of them begging and pleading, and at the fact that in just an hour or so he would have forgotten about them; he couldn’t imagine forgetting about them, not now.
Toby, his and Queenie’s eldest, who they loved and doted on from the day he was born. Daisy, their first girl and his princess, so curious and perceptive. The twins, Ruth and Abel, who were so different but still kind and loving to a fault. And then Eli…he wouldn’t be allowed to say goodbye to Eli, but their youngest son was already so loved and cherished. There would have probably been more children, and they would have been extremely loved too, no matter what.
Jacob didn’t want to forget any of them, not one bit, and it was cruellest thing imaginable to do so – but he had made the decision, for his family’s own safety. At the end of the day, the most important thing was keeping the children – and Queenie – safe.
They brought Queenie in just five minutes later; her face was tear-streaked, tired, and she was in handcuffs. He tried not to wince at the sight.
“You’ve got three minutes,” The guard gruffly told them, and he shot a look at Queenie. “You stay in cuffs.”
There wasn’t a great deal she could do, really, seeing as they had confiscated her wand but she said nothing, eyes fixed on her husband. The MACUSA official left, slamming the door behind him – and then she flew across the room, pressing herself against him.
“Oh, Jacob!” She was close to tears again. “There’s gotta be a way outta this, there has to be!”
“It’s gonna be fine,” Jacob told her weakly, though his voice was failing him – saying goodbye to the kids had been difficult enough, but Queenie? The very idea of saying goodbye to her – to this beautiful, kind, quick-witted woman who he’d been lucky enough to call his wife and have a family with – was unfathomable. “Really. Don’t worry ‘bout me, I’ll be okay…”
“No, you’re terrified,” She stated, and her shoulders were shaking as she read through his thoughts. “You…You agreed to be obliviated? Why?!”
He swallowed the lump in his throat. “I thought…if I came quietly, then you and the kids would be safe. I don’t want you guys in any trouble for me.”
A tear rolled down her face, and it was obvious that she was completely heartbroken. “Jacob…” She rested their foreheads together, and he carefully embraced her – it would be the last time, he knew, and he wanted to make the most of it. “This ain’t right…”
“No,” Jacob choked out, shutting his eyes. “No, it ain’t.”
“I’ll find you,” Queenie murmured, only somewhat determinedly. “Once they let me go, I’ll find you and…and there’s gotta be a way, there’s gotta be a way we can get memories back…”
“Queenie, honey,” He sighed, pulling away to look at her pleadingly. “Don’t. You’re in enough trouble ‘cause of me. Just…make sure the kids are safe, right? They’re gonna need you.”
She was crying steadily now, reaching for his hands with her own handcuffed ones. “I love you,” She told him tearfully. “There ain’t no one like you – there ain’t ever gonna be anyone like you, not to me.”
“Queenie, you…you’re the best thing that ever happened to me, you know?” He was crying too now, not even attempting to hide it from her. “You and the kids…and I’m gonna miss you so much.”
There was so much he wanted to tell her, she realized, so much that it was cluttering up his mind and making everything feel ten times worse. “You don’t need to say anything, Jacob – I know.”
Jacob made a noise somewhere between a chuckle and a small sob. “Yeah… I love you, Queenie. I love you so much…”
Queenie didn’t need to hear it – she understood his pain immediately. Instead, she leaned forwards and pressed her lips to his for one final kiss; after more than ten years of kisses, of love, of intimacy, she was going to lose him, and it hurt her in every way possible. It was strangely reminiscent of that day in the rain outside the subway station so long ago – the first time she had lost him – but it was worse now after having lived and loved, had children together.
The door burst open before they finished their kiss, the guard storming in with his wand at the ready. “Alright, time is up.”
He pulled Queenie away, sneering in disgust, and pushed her towards the door; Jacob watched helplessly, well-aware that there were other guards just waiting for him to attempt to do something foolish. “Hey, don’t hurt her!” He shouted after them, feeling utterly useless. “And…And, Queenie, I love you! Don’t ever forget that!”
She could only sob, struggling as she was led away, because alongside her own pain she could feel his too – she could feel his worry and anxiety and how heartbroken he was because of how much he had loved her and their family. She could feel the disgust bubbling up from under the guard at the sight of them kissing, his revulsion at the very idea that she would breed with a No-Maj of all things, and she wished that she had her wand so that she could hex every last one of these guards, so that she could escape with Jacob and the children, so that they could go somewhere safe.
She wanted Jacob.

Young biochemist Dr. Theodore "Ted" Sallis, a native of Omaha, Nebraska,[28] is working in the Everglades as part of Dr. Wilma Calvin's Project: Gladiator team, which includes Dr. Barbara Morse and her fiancé Dr. Paul Allen, and an assistant named Jim. A Dr. Wendell is later cited as being on the staff after Dr. Calvin is shot.[29] The group is attempting to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum that had created Captain America.[30] Web of Spider-Man (vol. 2) #6 revealed that Sallis at one point treated and worked alongside Dr. Curtis Connors shortly after Connors' arm was amputated, driving the research that would eventually transform Connors into the Lizard.
Though warned that the technological terrorist group Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) has been operating in the area, Sallis breaches security by bringing with him his lover, Ellen Brandt (referred to here as "Miss Brandt", but later retconned to be his wife). He destroys his notes to his formula, which he has memorized. Later, he is ambushed by two thugs and learns that Brandt has betrayed him. Fleeing with the only sample of his serum, he injects himself with it in hopes of saving himself. However, he crashes his car into the swamp where scientific and, as Man-Thing #1 later explained, magical forces combine to instantly transform him into a slow-moving plant-matter creature with large, solid red eyes.[31] Unable to speak, and with dim memories, he attacks the ambushers and Brandt, burning and scarring part of her face with an acid that he now secretes in the presence of negative emotions. The Man-Thing then wanders away into the swamp.[32]
Sallis' mind was apparently extinguished, although on rare occasions he could briefly return to consciousness within his monstrous form, as in Doctor Strange (vol. 2) #41 (June 1980), The Defenders (vol 1) #98 (August 1981), and Peter Parker: Spider-Man Annual '99, and even to his human form, as in Adventure into Fear #13 (April 1973), Marvel Two-in-One #1 (January 1974), Marvel Comics Presents #164 (October 1994), and Man-Thing (vol. 3) #5 and 7-8 (April 1998, June–July 1998).
Under writer Steve Gerber, the Man-Thing encounters the sorceress Jennifer Kale, with whom he briefly shared a psychic link and who knew his true identity, in a story arc in Fear #11-13 – the final issue of which established that the swamp had mystical properties as the Nexus of Realities. Through an interdimensional portal in Fear #19, he meets Howard the Duck, who becomes stranded in this reality. The Man-Thing became the guardian of the Nexus, and found himself facing demons, ghosts and time-traveling warriors, while continuing to encounter such non-supernatural antagonists as rapacious land developers, fascist vigilantes and common criminals. He formed a bond with young radio DJ Richard Rory and nurse Ruth Hart. Issue #12's "Song-Cry of the Living Dead Man", about an crazed writer named Brian Lazarus, spawned Gerber's posthumously published 2012 sequel, "The Screenplay of the Living Dead Man", in the three-issue miniseries The Infernal Man-Thing.
In Man-Thing (vol. 2) #1-11 (November 1979 – July 1981), writer Chris Claremont introduced himself as a character in the final issue, as Gerber had in the finale of the first series. Additionally, Claremont temporarily became the Man-Thing after being stabbed to death. His and other characters' deaths were later resolved with the intervention of the War Is Hell series lead, John Kowalski, now an aspect of Marvel Comics' manifestation of Death. In Man-Thing (vol. 3) #1-8 (December 1997 – July 1998), Ellen Brandt Sallis returns to the Citrusville area and encounters a little boy, Job Burke, who is actually the Sallises' son, who had been put up for adoption. Following this series, the story continued in Strange Tales (vol. 4) #1-2, and was projected to continue in the unpublished issues #3-4. Summaries based on DeMatteis' unillustrated scripts appear on the K'Ad-mon and Ellen Brandt pages in Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe.[21][22]
During the "Civil War" storyline, two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents unsuccessfully attempt to register the Man-Thing under the Superhuman Registration Act.[33]
The Man-Thing later appears as a member of the Legion of Monsters alongside Morbius, the Living Vampire, the Werewolf by Night, the Manphibian, and N'Kantu, the Living Mummy.[34] He later gains the ability to speak comprehensibly through the use of the "Universal Language".[35] Phil Coulson subsequently recruits the Man-Thing for his incarnation of the Howling Commandos.[36]
As part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel branding, the Man-Thing appears as a member of S.T.A.K.E.'s Howling Commandos.[37]
During the "Empyre" storyline, Man-Thing falls under the control of the Cotati led by Ventri that were operating in the Savage Land.[38] Doctor Voodoo takes control of Man-Thing to free Matthew and Black Knight. As Matthew and Black Knight fight the Cotati, a Doctor Voodoo-controlled Man-Thing fights the Cotati's control and defeats Ventri.[39] As Doctor Voodoo exits Man-Thing to assist Scarlet Witch after Ka-Zar was stabbed by a Cotati using Black Knight's Ebony Blade, Man-Thing continued the fight against the Cotati. When the Cotati were defeated, Man-Thing takes his leave after being thanked by Black Knight. Ventri claims that what they learned from Man-Thing's energy has been sent to Quoi to fuel the Cotati's invasion.|[

Today in LGBTQ+ History
July 23rd

(1726) Margaret Clap is convicted of “keeping a disorderly house of the entertainment of sodomites.” Homosexuality was still a crime at that point, and Clap ran what was referred to as a "molly house," 'molly' being slang for 'gay man,' a place where the gay community could fraternize and solicit sex or relationships.
(1899) Ruth Charlotte Ellis, openly lesbian and prominent in LGBTQ+ and African American activism, is born. She came out as a lesbian at 16 years old and graduated from Springfield High School in 1919. Less than seven percent of BPOC graduated from secondary school during that time period. In the 1920s, she met her longtime partner and the only woman she ever lived with, Ceciline “Babe” Franklin. They moved to Detroit, MI in 1937, where Ellis became the first American woman to own a printing business in the city. She made a living printing stationery, fliers, and posters out of her house. Ellis and Franklin’s house was also known in the Black community as the “gay spot”. It was a central location for gay and lesbian parties, and also served as a refuge for African American gays and lesbians. She died peacefully at age 101, in October 2000.
(1975) Evangelist Billy Graham comes out in favor of gay men allowing to serve as ministers.
(1985) Custody of Sharon Kowalski, severly disabled after an accident, was granted to her father rather than her lover, Karen Thompson. This resulted in Thompson being barred from visitng Kowalski, as her family did not approve of their relationship. She would continue the legal battle with a string of appeals, after which she was finally successful in reuniting with her partner.
(1987) 1. Dignity, a Catholic gay organization, hosts a conference challenging and decrying the Vatican's Ratzinger letter. In this letter, the Church declared homosexuality to be “a strong tendency to behavior which is intrinsically evil.” It also claimed gays and lesbians should expect to be victims of violence, that the LGBTQ+ community should not have civil rights, and that all organizations that disagree with the church's teachings on homosexuality should not be allowed to use church facilities.
2. Several groups protested the Pope's visit to San Francisco, including survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
3. President Ronald Reagan forms a presidential commission on AIDS. Our current president must have taken a leaf from his book about appointing people to positions, as none of the people appointed to this commission were knowledgeable about the illness, and there was one gay man, who happened to be a medical researcher, a decision bringing scorn from conservatives. Surprisingly (or actually not), they were totally fine with the homophobic Archbishop John Cardinal O'Connor from New York. This presidential committee was widely considered to be a fiasco.
(2015) The Gender Accordance Act is passed in Poland, allowing transgender people to change the gender appearing on their IDs.

Our award-winning exhibition “Influencers: Art and History on South Mountain Road” will close Sunday.
Please join us at the History Center today, tomorrow Friday and Sunday, from noon to 4pm if you would like to see this informative and interesting show.
Named for its geographical location at the southern base of the ridge that ends at the High Tor peak overlooking Haverstraw Bay, South Mountain Road is a winding four-mile stretch of road with a rich and varied history. Originally inhabited by Munsee Lenape Indians, the valley became home in the early 1700s to Dutch and English settlers who farmed and quarried local sandstone deposits. The landscape remained relatively unchanged until the early 20th century, when South Mountain Road was discovered by a group of artists and intellectuals seeking respite from New York City. From 1908 through the present, South Mountain Road has provided shelter to an enclave of creative people who have left lasting marks not only locally but also on the wider world of art and letters.
"Influencers" uses objects, archival material, images, and works of art from the artists' family and from the collections of the Historical Society of Rockland County and Rockland Center for the Arts to explore how the landscape of South Mountain Road influenced its many residents over the course of the twentieth century and how, in turn, the artists and intellectuals who found inspiration here influenced one another. Among the notable residents of "The Road" featured in the exhibition are John and Mary Mowbray-Clarke, co-founders with the painter (and fellow Rockland resident) Arthur B. Davies of the 1913 Armory Show that introduced Modernism to America; the sculptor Hugo Robus; the ceramicist and painter Henry Varnum Poor; the poet Amy Murray; the playwright Maxwell Anderson; the textile artist Ruth Reeves; the painters Morris Kantor and Martha Ryther; the composer Kurt Weill and his wife, the actress Lotte Lenya; the cartoonist Milton Caniff; and the actor and director John Houseman.
Despite intensified surburban encroachment since the 1980s, South Mountain Road has managed to retain much of the rural character with modern convenience that attracted artists to it more than a century ago. From early efforts to reclaim rustic farmhouses to today's work to protect the West Branch watershed and save Henry Varnum Poor's Crow House, South Mountain Road also reveals a legacy of environmental conservation and historic preservation that go to the core of the unique culture of Rockland County.
We are also pleased to announce that our semi-permanent exhibition "Rockland Voices" will feature a special mini-exhibition for 2019: Crow House: Handmade by Henry Varnum Poor. Henry Varnum Poor seemed to turn everything he touched into art. Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the house and studio he designed and built as a place of comfort for his family on South Mountain Road in New City. How it was conceived, constructed, and enjoyed are illustrated through archival images and documents. Contemporary photographic images from the past decade help shed light on the present condition of this important artist's home and studio and beg the question: What does the future hold for Crow House?
Thanks to the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Elizabeth Felicella, Caroline Hannah, Julie Scholz, Chuck Stead, and Karen Zukowski.
The exhibition runs through October 27 and is open to the public, free of charge, on Wednesdays-Fridays and Sundays, 1-4 pm, and by appointment. Please note that the HSRC will be closed, however, on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019.
