NHS uses LWJ's birth name to refer to him when introducing him.

“Not that old man,” Nie Huaisang replied. “The one you have to be careful of is his favorite disciple, Lan Zhan.”

Excluding him and Wei Wuxian, no one uses his birth name to refer to him. There's always a chance that they knew each other before they got their courtesies, perhaps due to the shared friendship between NMJ and LXC.

NHS brings that friendship up when explaining the Sabre Hall where he focuses most of the conversation in referring directly to LWJ, since it is his word he requires so that his clan secret does not get leaked. It implies a show of trust in him, considering his words that Lan Wangji has always been a man of his word. Feel free to imagine what other promises he is keeping for him!

It also bears true that it was also Lan Wangji who first recognises the scrap of clothing to belong to Nie Huiasang when they were investigating the Man Eating Castle rumors and it was in fact Lan Wangji who brought him to the inn for interrogation.

Nie Huiasang's plan for starting the investigation for his brother's death involved endangering Lan disciples when they would be out helping the Mo Manor to take care of the walking corpse issue. Obviously, this was to bring Lan Wangji into the fray. His reputation of going after all cases without prejudice, and of being ruthless in executing his own ideal of justice are all well known. Nie Huiasang planned for him to solve the case and gain the ear of Lan Xichen and the wider cultivation world, so that they would side against Jin Guangyao and hopefully end him, effectively completing his revenge.

Outside of that, the personalities are more of opposites at first glance. Lan Wangji is diligent in his cultivation training while detesting laziness and has a very straightforward approach to how he approaches problems. Nie Huiasang fools around all the time and doesn't seem to care about the values Lan Wangji holds close, and has a twisted way of solving things.

Yet, when their loved one is harmed, they would go to all lengths to right the wrong as they personally see fit. Lan Wangji fights 33 elders to keep Wei Wuxian safe, and later in the present time he always sticks to him and stands against the world out of love and faith. Nie Huiasang brings down one of the most powerful people in the cultivation world by years of methodical planning, not caring about the wider consequences of his actions.

They are deeply selfish people, who when they care for one thing, the world ceases to exist for them.

Narrow minded focus, and a case between them and a ruthlessness in their actions and an implied past—I think they could have great chemistry if explored further.

The realization that he's not going to die today, or even be dragged off by the guards, almost makes Wen Ning's limbs go boneless enough to lose his balance, but he manages to catch himself before he can fall out of the rafters and land on his head.

Landing on his feet instead, he hesitantly approaches Sang-er. "What... what happens now?" he asks hesitantly.

"Nothing, yet. Except perhaps to get you different clothing," Sang-er says, the unspoken meaning clear. "Then we'll negotiate."

Submission: Imagine, two women with powerful cultivation meeting in their informative years on Xian Shu Peak (or elsewhere), one from a humble background and another from a powerful cultivation family. They grow together and eventually fall in love only for the filial duty of one to marry another tears them apart. One grows into a sect leader, the other the wife of the Jiang sect leader. Though choices have led them down different paths, they still carry a deep love for each other that lasts into Yu Ziyuan's death. It's the tragic what might have been mixed with comphet on YZY's part that makes this a fascinating pair that deserves more love.

I’ve talked with @eldritch-elrics and @qi-ling about Sangchengning several times (thank you for your thoughts) and I think the ship has a lot of potential.

It starts with the parallels. They are each a youngest brother left behind. They each value family yet are left alone for different reasons, “othered” by the world. They each care too much, love too hard, know grief too intimately. They are also some of the few people left who know who Wei Wuxian really is.

They each know anger deeply and feel it deeply, but express it in different ways ranging from NHS’s cold, quiet manipulation to JC’s heated outbursts to WN’s bottled-up resentment. They have each seen the consequences of how their anger has affected the world, with varying degrees of responsibility. They each have complicated relationships with betrayal and consent, sometimes as perpetrators, sometimes as victims (elaborating on this mess would really need its own post). All of these could be possible connecting points between them--opportunities for healing, for making sense of the past, for figuring out where to go from here.

I do think it would be a bit difficult for the ship to actually work out. Personally I think JC’s inferiority complex might get in the way of poly-ness (although I am 100% here for JC getting extra love), there’s the question of who reaches out first when tie-lines feel so frigid and distant and maybe aren’t even visible, and JC and WN have a lot of issues obstructing an amicable relationship between them...but still.

NHS is the link, the starting point. I think he would be looking for someone to connect with post-canon, somewhere he can let down his mask. JC and WN would probably like apologies for their nephews being put in danger and would be suspicious of him, but would also sympathize with him. From there, NHS could make a very good mediator between JC and WN, who are more similar to each other than they realize.

Bonus points for added backstories to deepen the narrative--it’s fair game for any of them to have been childhood friends/lovers during the Cloud Recesses study arc, and NHS and JC could have had some history during the timeskip. If we’re getting creative, WN could also enter the picture during the timeskip (i.e. NHS helps him escape from Jinlintai and keeps him somewhere safe, visits him often and forms a friendship toeing the line of romantic, one day JC discovers him--I cannot express how badly I need fanfic of this concept).

Plus their personalities are just fun to put together! There’s a lot of potential for humor and fluff, too. They can each bring out different types of expressiveness in the other: WN and NHS can bring out the softness in JC, JC can bring out a more vocal side of NHS and WN, NHS can bring out the troll in WN, and JC and WN would both definitely indulge NHS on his whimsy. They each are impulsive in some ways and steady in others. They’d complement each other well.

It would take work for Sangchengning to happen, but the intentionality of forming something new and whole out of broken pieces is all part of the charm :)

I mean, if NMJ lives in PTL, then his focus will likely still be keeping his brother safe and making sure someone's there to take care of Huaisang in the event of his untimely death via qi deviation. And, like, *if* wen ning can prove that he's good despite being a wen, I could see that there's something to be said for an undying, kind, simultaneously gentle and absolutely ferocious bodyguard who will never, ever, ever stop protecting his little brother. At least from NMJ's perspective, that is.

He does indeed live and OH, what a fascinating detail I hadn't considered; Mingjue's Wen issues!

But I adore that reasoning, and I'm imagining Huaisang being a bit of a brat about it and using it as an excuse to not practice his saber ever again because, like, when would he NOT be safe? Hello?
