21, Generation Kill?

Ohhh boy. There are a few different things I started and never finished in GK, but definitely The One That Got Away is, I do believe, the very first story I ever plotted out (Every Marine a Wolfbrother was second--both predated me actually watching the miniseries, I think).

The file name for the 1500 words of it I did write was "Peaceful as I Fell" which is from the Josh Ritter song Rattling Locks:

I had a dream where I was dyin' But it wasn't no nightmare I was peaceful as I fell And if I was fallin' into heaven Heaven must be hotter than the Bible tells I woke up sorry I was living Rather than rattling your locks I'd rather spend the night in hell

...so yeah it was a story where Nate was killed by an IED--died with Brad kneeling over him helpless to do anything--except also Nate, so far as Nate understands, is getting on with his post-war life in DC and just has this recurring dream about that moment when he was dying and looking up peacefully at Brad. And eventually one night after having this dream he calls Brad, and Brad, who is alive, gets this call from the LT, who died months ago, and something something intensely tragic ghost love story.

Oddly enough I could not figure out how to bring it to a satisfying conclusion (the closest I got was the version I outlined where Brad dies on his next deployment and in his final moments looks up to see Nate kneeling over him, and feels the same peace Nate felt in all of his dreams, which was... complete, but not exactly satisyfing).

So, uh, yeah, that one... got away. Or was humanely released for the good of everyone involved.

i think William wanted Mike to be more like him on a lot of levels, so he often wouldn't punish Mike for what he did to Evan. He might have given Mike the occasional reprimand, but William did this *knowing* that Mike was acting out for attention and that the reprimands were satisyfing said desire for attention.

That being said, William probably still would have punished Mike if he acted out like that and did anything to Ev in public, because it sends the message that he cannot control his kids.

GOD there's so many good ones I can think of

-Classic Boss Theme/Vs. Classic Yo-kai: this one is so fucking HYPE it's sm fun to listen to!! Vs. Venoct and Kyubi slaps too and its pretty much a remix of Vs Classic

-Vs. Odd Yo-kai: I absolutely live for the weird goofy vibe of this song. If you asked me which song from the OST sounded the most "yo-kai watchey" this one would be my answer

-Sleeping Springdale (past): UM???????? HELLOW?????????? THIS ONE HAS NO RIGHT TO BE SO BEAUTIFULLY COMPOSED. WHAT IN THE WORLD

-Ain't Nothin' Like A Funky Yo-kai: Another super fun upbeat song!! The banjo in this one is insane

-Vs. Sighborg Y: ok so I probably wouldn't've known this other wise, but someone pointed out to me that Vs. Sighborg Y has the same little intro symphony as the Flintstones theme song. The theme for this robot character, which already sounds oddly western, shares a jingle with a show about cavemen. This is so absurd to me its funny

-Vs Whisper Cream but like, the japanese version: I am SO SAD they cut the background singers yelling "GHOS BASAS" in the English version. I understand WHY they did but that was easily the best part of the song

-Vs Merican Boss Yo-kai: the transition around the 50 second mark hits different. The goofy clinks and clanks are SO satisyfing

-Vs. Captain Thunder: hehe jazzy

-DOG OF THE NORTH STAR: DOG OF THE NORTH STAR

-Vs. The Ghoulfather: haha funny gun sounds go pew. I can't believe yo-kai watch referenced Goncharov (1973)

-Vs. Shogun King/The Last Nyanmurai: I like both of these so I'm grouping them together here, these are so HYPE

-Katie's House: This one is mega nostalgic for me, since I always played Katie in 1-2. It's just a cute theme, and after going back and listening to it I realized I actually like it a lot :)

Also some King Cream Soda songs I bop to regularly (these count right?)

-Gera Gera Po: nothing beats the original. can I get a gera gera po

-Shiroi Ikakuka (We Want To Eat White Squid): THE GUITAR SLAPS. THE LYRICS ARE ABOUT EATING MCKRAKEN. 10/10 SONG

-Shake Shake Ogon no Shake: I'm SOOOOOO MAD this was the only blasters theme that wasn't localized. literally shaking and crying and throwing up rn

-Burin Burin Daisenpuu (the ending theme for Sangokushi): this one BOPS. BLING BLING BLING BLING BLING BARANBANBAN

-Gera Po Dance Train: SO good omg I eat it up every time I hear it

-Last but definitely not least, Idol Wa Ooh-Nya-Nya No Ken (the cat girl song performed by the irl Nya-KB): ok hear me out. this songs whole existence is wildly funny to me. they got REAL CAT GIRLS to sing about NOKOS AND PANDAS and ALSO, APPARENTLY IT HAD A LOT OF NEGATIVE RECEPTION DUE TO ITS "SUGGESTIVE LYRICS"???????? WHATTTTTTTTTTT NOW IM SCARED

I just realized today that what I wanted for Merlin/Morgana was a Xavier/Magneto kind of thing. It’s the "true friends to enemies” dynamic, the "we fight for the same thing but on opposite fronts but we already had a shared history working together” kind of dynamic.

Merlin and Morgana did not even reach past the point of them truly working for magic together, that’s why they subvert the trope. And that’s the real tragedy and poetry behind it, is it not? They never got the chance. And I think it was a brave decision for the writers to approach it like the way they did. I have never seen anything like this before.

It was very awesome to me that Something with so much potential for love and kindness then realistically turned into a world of prolonged bitterness and hurt without a satisyfing resolution.

Maybe in another world they could have become Xavier/Magneto instead. But for now they cannot.

2. What is the last book you read?

Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel, which pleasently suprised me! I was drawn to the book due to it's unique style - it's told through a serious of interviews with the main charcters and someone. The interviews were so fluently written I flew from one page to the next in lightning speed. The concept of a robot hidden under the earth's surface that is slowly uncovered seemed like a great concept to crave my SciFi needs and did not disappoint. I really enjoyed the twiss and the commitment of the author to not shy away from harm or disaster. The characters are endearing and just complicated enough (and not at all what I expected them to be) and I like where the story ended up. It has a satisyfing ending that doesn't leave you with a huge cliffhanger so you'd need to read the sequel (I still intend to do that anyways tho).

All in all a good book! Excited to read what you read last ;)

i'll definitely try it more! there are meditation tracks on the satisyfer app and they've actually helped quite a bit with becoming attuned to what i feel :) it's not that i'm uncomfortable with my own thoughts or body, rather that i get intrusive thoughts, especially since a recent Event. i appreciate you being so open about this! it's incredibly helpful to be able to discuss such a topic with someone else 🦊

it's good practice to sort of let intrusive thoughts come (not like you can stop them anyway) and acknowledge them and focus on something else. do a breathing exercise or find a better thought to focus on. i understand that it's a struggle, though! it took me a long time to be able to empty my brain and get comfortable with self-pleasure, bc it is sorta directly tied to the specific ways in which i was sexually abused as a kid and young adult lol. for me it was like a personal goal to be able to do it without any outward distraction and find myself again. it's not perfect, though! sometimes i still have a random breakdown and i generally have a weird relationship with my body and how i feel or don't feel pleasure, but i'm working to better it! i came a long way
