Episode 1
Patient ID: 101 - Condition stable - They appear to have contained the flux of the Rhymadon Crystal, but rejection is still a possibility. I wish we knew what the cause of rejection is, but that will require more testing and further controls with Inert Implantation and Arcane Implantation. I know Arcane Implantation is a reality that most of us will experience within the decade.
The pressure I felt was immense. Not pressure above me, or behind me, or from others, not from my brain, heart, or any other meaningful organ, but from something deeper. My bones, my muscles. From my being.
At the time I didn’t know the dire nature of these feelings. They didn’t feel final, or in any way a period to conclude my life. They felt like a coma, or a colon. As if saying “stay tuned” or as if there was going to be more to see. I found some comfort in this notion, however it was still unnerving, as if something was going to irreparably change, and that this was the beginning of something that would surely shift my entire physiology.
As if on cue, the first of the transition towards something else was starting. The first tangible symptom that I could latch on to, something I could experience, something I could fixate on. My vision grew cloudy. Not unlike how it looks when you keep your eyes open in a chemical pool, where vision changed, but not directly hindered. However, instead of a cloudy white, I got a vibrant cyan tint to everything I looked at. It was alarming, no doubt, and I quickly drew the correlation to that of the lucids that haunted the lower echelons of society. Those pearly blue eyes that seemed to see nothing and everything at the same time. The gateway to a soul that experienced nothing, and everything. Eyes which felt empty, yet bursting with wisdom which felt above you.

Borne Away by the Waves - A Short Story by Hannah Elizabeth Fisher
He was soon borne away by the waves, and lost in darkness and distance.
Mary Shelley and her Frankenstein always eased my stress. Her words had comforted me through breakups, stressful exams and house moves. As I closed the wrinkled book, I ran my fingers over the ridged spine and thought about how I had carried this copy all over the world with me on my adventures. It was the only book I physically owned, too. But it was always me and Mary against the world.
I turned to pack old Mary away in my backpack just as a small blue butterfly landed on my shoulder. I carefully took a selfie with it, as anyone would, and patiently waited for her to fly away before I continued to stand and make my way towards the door. Today was particularly quiet for the Glass Hills Park Butterfly House, there were no children trying to catch the more friendly butterflies, just me, my book and a young couple on their weekly walk. I see them from time to time, we sometimes say hello to each other. Though today they were deep in a conversation about the inner workings of their washing machine. Couple stuff, I thought.
The sun blared as the glass doors closed quietly behind me. I checked the date on my phone. It was mid-January. In the past, it was said that winter stretched from December to February. But Glass House Hills was the perfect city. It only rained at night when nearly everyone’s safe in their houses. The leaves turn orange in October, and it always snows at Christmas, the only cold weather we have in the year. Down the path from the Butterfly House stood a large white permanent gazebo, and inside a band were playing some form of new country song that I had never heard, a crowd had gathered so at least they were entertaining others. I smiled to myself and shoved my phone away in the pocket of my jeans to make my way over to my favourite coffee hut where my crush was working, making the most amazing coffee I had ever tasted.
I bought a cup, and after a little light flirting I continued my walk. The steam rose from the paper cup and teased my nose with hazelnut oat milk heaven scent. I walked to the entrance of the park to check the local events. I chose to take the next two days off work and enjoy some time away from the business, and a little music gig or a theatre trip would round things up nicely before I had to return.

Half-Eaten Apple
15 Jast, 1429 C.Y.
Archaeologists have recently unearthed a new site near the city of Sen Gabareria in the midst of the barren plateau of Alucandra. The site has been described as a “concrete jungle” by archaeologists, with massive amounts of concrete and metallic rods found at the location. Experts think that this used to be a major city of the creatures of the old world and was most possibly a bustling hub of industry or trade. Several buildings have been found which seem to have been the workplaces and schools of humans, who most possibly abandoned them around 2781 A.D. or 3022 B.C.Y.
Tumblr media
An interesting discovery in the city, named Conmeton by archaeologists, is that of several metal plates, mostly rectangular in frame with rounded corners. What’s noteworthy is that most of these metal plates seem to have a carving of a half-eaten apple on them. Experts suggest that this was possibly a deity of the humans, or an emblem of one of their Gods. The deity of the half-eaten apple seems to have been the deity of work and education, as the bigger plates were found in clusters inside the broken buildings used supposedly for the same purposes. It is being theorised that the deity’s image was carved into the metal plates to invoke the blessings of the God of Work and Education. The metal plates themselves also seem to have been essential instruments of the work and school life of the humans, with them being heavily dependent on them for their day-to-day activities.
Additionally, smaller tablets with the carving of the half-eaten apple have also been found throughout Conmeton. These plates have much lesser dimensions than the ones found in heaps at the suspected workplaces and schools, but are more widely found scattered throughout the city in ruins. These smaller tablets, termed ‘Enop’, are of different sizes and have varying number of holes in the upper-left corner. Archaeologists think that the enops were good-luck charms which everyone carried with them all the time. The size of these enops and the number of holes on them were possibly related to the social and economic status of the humans, with wealthier people having larger enops with more holes. The enop carried by a person may also have served as an identification token of the person and may have been indicative of the person’s power in the society – people with smaller, less-holed enops were supposedly subservient to those having larger more-holed versions.
An alternative idea about the carving of the half-eaten apple states that apples were miraculous fruits, granting higher cognitive abilities and physical prowess, and were hence central to the humans of the bygone era. This theory, proposed by Prof. Chim Paze, has quickly gained a lot of support by archaeologists and historians around the world. Prof. Chim Paze, hailing from the oldest family of the world, also suggests that while the larger plates found at the workplaces might have been actually used for work purposes, the enops were possibly used to store the fruit. A larger enop meant greater storage capacity, while the number of holes possibly signified the quality of the apples that could be stored in it, with higher quality apples needing more holes, in which case he suggests that the holes might have had some component in them which helped preserve the fruit. He further hypothesizes that humans, after finding out the great potential of the fruit, might have resorted to overconsumption to be more productive, and it is this same overconsumption which led to their ultimate demise as their bodies could not withstand the long-term effects of heightened powers granted by the fruit. However, the credibility of this theory cannot be proved outright due to the extinction of the fruit along with humans.
The discovery has opened up new roads to our knowledge about the ancient world and will possibly be extremely valuable in our learning about the humans. We might also be able to bring back some of the ancient technologies developed by them which are now lost to time. The world holds its breath.

Breathless
Just as she leaned in for a kiss, he held the mirror quickly and clandestinely  near where lips touched, feeling a sudden chill. Glancing down quickly  at the small pocket glass, he sighed at the result, clear as day, no fog,  nor any reflection at all. He backed away slowly, pushing the child beside farther away from her. “Robert, call the others, this is not your mother.”

A Short Little Story Thing. I’m currently re-reading Dracula, next on the list is The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin. Her sci-fi is incredible. Thank you for reading this. What are you all reading at the moment?
.
Image ID: White text on a blue background with the Short Little Story Thing tag at the bottom . White text reads: She pulled on the handbrake and gave up control of the ship to the eddies of the solar winds. This was always the highlight of her cargo runs. Fly close enough to a star and you can use its flares to surf in a dark sea. Wiping-out was not an option. But she had time. She was still within the delivery window. And if she didn’t make it all she’d get is a bad review.

Book Review Anthya’s World: An adventure of mystery and intrigue spanning the galaxies
Another five star novel by the queen of the science fiction genre, Cil Gregoire. Whether or not sci-fi is your thing, Anthya’s World should be your book. It is a fascinating warp and weave of two almost entirely different worlds, Alaska’ Upper Susitna Valley and a long-avoided part of Anthya’s planet known by the frightening appellation of “The Devastated Continent”. Rahlys and her earthlies with powers join with Anthya and her more developed confreres in an expedition to a frightening and fascinating part of a magical planet. The transitions from the things we know to the magical, fantastic world that—for us—exists only in our imaginations are seamless; so much so, that it takes a moment of reflection to be sure that the activities of teleporting and mental telepathy are part of our own observations or just a widely know part of a world in which have come to believe. This is story par excellence, adventure as good as it gets, and descriptions of real and fanciful things that we come to take for granted. “That’s the needle the gods used to sew together the fabric of the world.” “Are you making all this up?” She have him a small punch. Quaylyn pretended to be hurt by her comment. “Are you insinuating my ancestors had less imagination than your own?” “No, of course not. I didn’t mean to imply that.” “Well, then,” he said with a dimpled smile.
