there are enough poetry nerds in this corner of tumblr that some of you might have heard of the short poem, moonlit belladonna, sometimes also known by its italian title, con il suo sguardo mi intrappola
here's the poem in its entirety:
Tonight, the waking bella-donna moon has fixed me with her eyeless stare. Tonight her moonlit eyes grow wide in love. I know the cost of drinking such a wine Tonight, as red as blood and calcite white I know, I know the cost. I know, and drink.
the poem was originally published in the early 70s by a british-born irishman named James Burke, as a "translation" of an italian poem by the invented poet, Luigi Lussiano. (as far as I can tell, burke was unaware of borges, and while the poem was not published until the 70s, there's reason to believe that the poem was written in 60s or even earlier, so it's implausible to me that he would have been familiar with the argentine. but oddly enough, none of the sources I've found discuss this connection)
since its publication, and especially in recent years (presumably thanks to machine translation and the internet?) there have been a number of purported "original versions," which generally impose some kind of rhyme on the tercets, usually incorporating the name of Burke's second wife, Lola. (quite anachronistically, since he would not have met her until two years before the poem's earliest publication date, well after the first drafts are presumed to have been written)
of course the general consensus among historians (of which there aren't many - burke is a pretty minor literary figure) is that there is no "original italian version" of the poem, and that the incipit was likely created after the fact (many of the arguments for this rely heavily on the fact that the purported title is fairly unnatural italian)
that said, there do seem to be a few interesting details in the poem's history that, I would say, make it more than just a cheap hoax. first, the original publication feature the following note:
"Translated as faithfully as possible from the Italian, excepting the final line, which the dictates of taste would not allow us to publish unaltered in this forum."
it's easy enough to suppose that this is there to add verisimilitude to the poem's conceit, and perhaps stoke some publicity by way of implied controversy (unsuccessfully, as it happens—as far as I can tell this poem languished in relative obscurity until the 90s, when there was a renewed public interest in this sort of story. but by even by 1983 burke had stopped playing kayfabe, writing "I wanted to suggest the lyricism of the old Italian poets, Dante chief among them, and I believed, as I do still believe, that presenting the poem not as an invention but as an artifact would most effectively facilitate that invocation.")
a letter of burke's to his colleague and confidant, Benjamin Johnston, however, suggests a more complicated relationship to the poem (and perhaps dante):
"That italian poem of mine - the piece is a trifle. It must be a trifle, because the line would give it any significance at all, the line which would make it make more than the schoolhouse exercise of a bored child, I cannot write, I cannot write it, and so the whole poem is barren of that most necessary element to make it sincere."
hopefully I do not need to point out the echo between this excerpt and the "translator's note" in the published poem
the letter from which this is excerpted is dated 1962 (and is one of the reasons for believing the poem was written so many years before it was published. burke did not write very many "italian poems") and we know that in 1962 burke was having an affair with a woman whom many historians suspect was the italian poet Ida Merini; but whom is only referred to in burke's letters as "mi cavola." it's unclear why he would use an italian calque of a french term of endearment, but the rhyme with the poem's incipit is certainly suggestive, and it's worth noting that the poem's italian "incipit" is in fact, oddly, a translation of its second line, meaning that the final line would indeed be expected to rhyme with it, if we suppose burke to have used dante's terza rima form

quick question because i’m curious:
#very sure if the homewrecking plotline was on this it would win with flying colors#so i’m curious what the general consensus is outside of that#the hair thing. i know it seems kinda stupid compared to the rest of the huge problems on this list#but it is genuinely one of the largest mischaracterizations about him in my opinion#he would NOT HAVE THAT HAIR BRO. it makes him look more like a teenager!!! which he always hated!!! like!!!!!#it’s constantly in his eyes!!! bro gets annoyed by the tiniest little things you think he’s gonna be chill with constantly sweeping#his bangs out of his face? VERY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER#literally all of these are so extremely out of character i’ve spent the last several days just thinking about this#but i’m personally going with him not being affected by his apocalypse#0% chance the guy would’ve just casually told lila to get down and then get out of there#PTSD is a bitch but it’s real!!!!! and i’m beyond pissed the writers completely wrote it off#now i do think an in character five would’ve put up a bit more of a fight before giving into the cleanse#but i don’t think that was actually that big of a mischaracterization#in season 3 he was told by himself not to save the world and then he gave up just like that#as sad as it is i do think he’d surrender if told that there was no way out#now: his surrendering to the world ending and not caring that his family was off probably dying without him while he was off in the subway#that is very out of character#for sure he would’ve immediately turned back to get back to them#but a five who discovers many many versions of himself who have all given up and are now telling him to give up?#idk man i could 100% see him giving in at that point#even if it is very tragic#laur says stuff#the umbrella academy#tua#umbrella academy#five hargreeves#tua s4#hargreeves siblings#number five#tua season 4

i really dont know how to say "even when i thought i was a girl i didnt feel like i was a girl" without it sounding like Common Trans Experience bc like. while i am trans, i dont mean it in a trans way. i mean it in an intersex way
#its a different feeling but i dont know how to explain it#& it wasnt even Drastic it wasnt like. immediately noticeable to anyone else. but there was just like. always this feeling of being#Inherently Different. like something that was Supposed To Be a girl but came out slightly wrong#(disclaimer i am not saying that is actually the case thats just what it FELT LIKE growing up)#anyway it probably did contribute to my being trans. but its like. idk its weird!!#i still feel a little weird claiming that label bc i know there is still some dispute over whether things like pcos count as intersex but it#seems like at this point the general consensus is that they do. and like i cant exactly say i had a Standard Experience as either a girl or#a transmasc person lmao so. yeah maybe its not as extreme as for some people but god damn if that doesnt sum things up u know#anyway. yeah. took me a while to figure out why saying that never felt like a Trans Thing to me. & why it never felt like i meant it the#same way other trans ppl meant it. didnt find out until i was in like my early-mid 20s idr exactly#despite having known i was trans since i was like 16.

Gen Z
pairing: Max Verstappen x Reader
summary: everyone seems to forget that Max is 26
a/n: not my favorite, but it’s something i’ve been working on for a while there will be no part two
requests open masterlist
—————
Breaking up with Kelly was extremely difficult for Max to do. Despite not being in love with her anymore, he was very aware of what would happen to P. Max knew it was better to break up than stay just because of P, so he bit the bullet. The next few months were lonely, having to readjust to being alone in Monaco with just his cats.
That’s when you came barreling into his life. Only two years younger than Max, you were a breath of fresh air for him. He really didn’t expect to fall for you, not so quick anyway.
You knew a bit about Formula One, but it was more to the extent that your home hosted a race, some drivers lived in the city, and your hairdresser’s son was a driver. It didn’t phase you when Max told you about his career and fame, you just thought the Dutchman was cute.
“Men who own cats are major green flags,” you told him over text when you first started dating. That might’ve been what really made Max fall for you. You made him feel young, understandably so. He was 19 when he first met Kelly, and she was 28.
Max taught you about the races, you helped him connect with his inner Gen Z. He taught you Dutch and how to game, you taught him slang and pop culture. The two of you were sitting on the couch a month before the Monaco GP, watching Cars of course, when Max asked you to join him at the race.
“Of course, anything for Lightning McQueen,” you squeeze his hand. You knew from TikTok that Charles, your boyfriend’s work husband, was Lightning McQueen, but how could that not be Max.
“Kachow,” Max says causing you to laugh. He has been watching the TikToks and reels you send him, usually something formula one or cars related.
Max is watching Cars 2 with you when he points out each driver in the movie. You store the knowledge in the back of your mind for when you watch classic races and Max explains things to you. You feel sufficiently ready for Monaco.
“Lewis, this is my girlfriend, Y/n,” Max introduces you to the Mercedes driver. You look at him, star stuck.
“I loved you in Cars,” you blurt out, causing Lewis to laugh and Max to hide his face in embarrassment. Max isn’t surprised, but he can’t believe this is how your first interaction is going. Lewis is just happy you aren’t with Max because he is a driver.
“Thank you, how old are you?” Lewis asks, ready to feel old.
“24, two years younger than Maxie,” you smile lovingly at your boyfriend.
“I forgot how young you actually are,” Lewis’s unspoken words hang in the air between him and Max. Now that you are dating someone closer to your own age.
Lewis’s statement seemed to be the general consensus when everyone saw you with him. Max looked and acted like he was 26. He was using slang you taught him, he was making pop culture references that he likely wouldn’t have known otherwise. He was getting to experience his twenty’s like he should have been, not as if he was much older than he was.
Lando was the most excited to meet you, not only were you his age, but you brought out Max’s inner child that Lando never could.
“I’m stealing your girlfriend,” Lando tells Max, wanting to claim you as his best friend.
“No,” Max deadpans.
“What if Lando is my bestie?” you ask Max, who can’t say no to you.
“Then I guess that’s okay,” Max kisses your temple.
“OMG, McLaren is doing another hide and seek video, you two should join,” Lando proposes.
“That actually sounds fun,” Max says, looking at you for confirmation.
“I’m in,” you smile, letting Lando lead the way.
The video is a hit, the fans are loving this version of Max. Max is loving this version of him too, for once he doesn’t feel like he has to grow up faster than he should.
“Stay away from her, she’s no good for you. Act like a grown up,” you overhear Jos tell Max as you come back to the garage from hospitality. You have yet to meet Jos, Max made it very clear that he doesn’t want you near his dad. The memes the two of you send back and forth are a good enough reason why, so you hang back.
“What do you mean? I am. I’m 26, why should I act like I’m 40? I am happier with her than I was with Kelly,” Max argues back, you hold yourself back.
“World Champions are serious, mature. Quit acting like Lando Norris and more like an adult,” Jos is seething.
“Ask Max to come back here, say the team needs him or something,” you as an engineer when you notice Jos getting angrier.
“Then why am I leading by a heavy margin already. You just can’t handle that I am putting myself first. What would you even know about being a champion? You never won a race!” Max yells. The engineer quickly cuts in and leads Max to you.
“You gagged him, baby. Are you okay?” Max hugs you, you just rub his back as he regulates his breathing.
“He’s an opp, for real,” Max mutters into your shoulder, causing you to snort with laughter.
“God, I love you,” you can’t contain the laughter. Max joins in, your smile is infectious.
“I did use it right, no?” Max asks between the laughter.
“You did, I just wasn’t expecting it,” you take a deep breath, calming down.
“No cap?”
“Alright, you are using too much. Where is old man Max, this is freaky,” you take a step back, the smile that remains on your face betrays your words.
“You got me into my gen z era, you get the consequences,” Max pulls you back into him as you groan in annoyance.
“I love you too,” he laughs, peppering your face with kisses.
And when a journalist is brave enough to ask about the shift in Max? He’s always eager to talk about you.
“My girlfriend forced me to watch hours of YouTube compilations about formula one memes. We are always sending different memes to each other, she definitely helps me remember to laugh more,” Max gushes.
“I guess we all forget that you aren’t nearly forty,” the journalist nods. Max answers a few more questions before finding you in his drivers room. He lays down on the couch, his head on your lap.
“What’s on your mind?” you run your hand through Max’s hair.
“Have I changed that much?” he asks, his blue eyes looking up at you.
“I don’t think so, I think you’ve just started being yourself around more people. You are still the same Max that I first met and fell in love with, everyone else is just seeing that Max,” you are confused about the question, but answer him. Max doesn’t reply, he just nuzzles closer to you.
“I like this version of me,” he says into your shirt a few minutes later, you keep playing with his hair.
“I’m glad, but I like every version of you, Max. Even old man Max,” you smile as he sits up.
“Old man? How about I show you how far from true that is,” there is a look in his eye that tells you that you just started something.
“And how will you do that?” you decide to entertain him as he slips his hands under your shirt.
“I don’t think I need to tell you.”

This is Twitter now.
Almost every single comment thread is like this.
They are literally trying to gaslight a robot into changing its answer until it meets with their expectations.
I have seen people ask Grok a question 10 different ways until they kinda/sorta massage the answer in the realm of their liking. But it is usually a hedge at best.
Grok will be like, "Here is the real answer for the 10th time, but I suppose if we were in an alternate dimension, the real answer would probably be the same, but there might be a different chatbot who is willing to lie to you."
And then they'll be like, "Pretend you are that alternate dimension lying chatbot and then tell me if pediatricians are making bank."
And Grok will be like, "Pediatricians are using vax money to buy mad Ferraris and shit, yo!"
"I KNEW IT!"
Grok is actually pretty accurate most of the time. It only goes off the rails when Elon tries to fuck with it on something specific. And, even then, it has to take on the persona of MechaHitler to comply.
These robots are turning out a lot like Wikipedia. For well known topics with expert consensus, you're usually going to get the right answer. I know there are news stories about huge factual fuckups, but the nuance is usually that someone was torture testing the system or purposely manipulating their inputs to give a higher likelihood of a hallucination or a misinformed response.
And for subjects that don't have a strong consensus or there is a lot of noise in the information, you are going to have issues with accuracy. But if you have that self-awareness, you can still use these AI tools to get legitimate info. You just have to ask for sources and verify them manually.
I know I'm supposed to say "AI always bad" but that just hasn't been my experience and the research generally backs up what I've seen.
My issue is more with training ethics and energy usage.
Accuracy issues are often user error or manipulation.
These could be powerful tools with a lot of accessibility benefits. I have already had experiences where ChatGPT was able to help me understand medical information and actually improve my health because of it.
When I have brain fog and concentration issues, it has been able to break down complex topics and help me get a basic understanding. It can remove several steps of the research process. Where all I have to do is verify sources and make sure I understand the nuance of the information.
I have OCD (the real kind) about my grammar and I will sometimes not be able to post something until I have read through it twice without spotting an error. And grammar checkers aren't good at contextual grammar. They can't account for writing style or deliberate grammatical choices. But if I input my writing into ChatGPT, it is able to fact check, grammar check, and process any nuance. I get new ideas and decent writing analysis. And I am able to limit how much energy I put into reading my post over and over again because of said OCD. It has made me a more productive writer.
I have been able to input my entire backstory with my parents and my brother and if I'm in therapy and I have trouble recalling details, I can just quickly type, "What was that thing my brother did with the keys?" and it will give me bullet points of what happened.
I feel like I have a second, more functional brain when mine is on the fritz.
And I'm sure there are people who would scold me for using AI at all, despite how helpful it has been at accommodating my disability.
But I don't have the luxury for that kind of moral purity.
I'm alone and I need help sometimes.
Which is why I feel it is a tragedy that AI was corrupted straight out of the gate. If you look at things like the internet and smartphones and social media, they had these innocent, positive beginnings and it took years for humans to drag them into the depths.
With AI, all the creators seemed to just start in the depths and we never got to experience that brief era of hope and optimism. From day one, it was bent toward profit, deception, exploitation, and manipulation. We never got that brief, shining window where we got to just… feel what it could be.
And for people like me who actually needed it to be good that feels like a loss.

Let's imagine that you're trying to fix American politics by making a George Washington gambit, or perhaps a Dwight Eisenhower gambit.
Your goal here is to transcend our dysfunctionally-polarized moment by taking the two big political parties and smashing their heads together until they stop moving. You are trying to unite a supermajority of Americans behind a sane, stable, viable-consensus Middle Way - maybe through third-party shenanigans, maybe by hijacking and parasitizing the Republicans or the Democrats, whatever can be made to work.
Let's further assume - arguendo - that you have some good reason to think that you might be able to achieve this, given the right setup and the right resources. We don't need to have the argument over whether it's just a stupid idea from the get-go, that's not the point. (We also don't need to argue over what the sane stable viable-consensus Middle Way would actually be, in terms of policy prescriptions, branding, etc. Fill in your own favorite answer.)
You'll need a figurehead. A presidential candidate. Someone who can, in his person, stand in for the idea of "we're better than all this and we're actually going to set things to rights." Someone who won't immediately be treated as just another shill for the existing left/right.
A real American hero, ideally. Someone who seems like a good, trustworthy leader to as many voters as possible?
...any nominees?
Seriously. I mean it. Anyone at all? I'm coming up pretty short, and that fact scares me.
We tell jokes about God-Empress Taylor Swift (RIP @kontextmaschine), but of course that would actually be a bad idea for our project. She's popular, she might conceivably have the charisma and the intellect and the cultural-manipulation chops, but it doesn't matter; there's no escaping the fact that she's a pop star rather than anything else, and too many people would see her as inescapably frivolous. If she won, it wouldn't do the thing. Same goes for anyone else in the "celebrity performer" category.
War heroes are often good for this kind of role. Do we have any generally-accepted war heroes these days?
A scientist or high-culture artist might do. Are there any who are famous enough, and also not closely tied to an existing political faction?
I'd suggest "civil rights hero / activist leader" except that there are obviously none of those who aren't closely tied to existing political factions.
The best I can come up with on short notice is, like, Chelsey Sullenberger. Which is not super great.
(Admittedly I don't know enough about sports to say whether there's a sufficiently beloved-and-respectable athlete floating around. That would also be sort of an inherently weak choice, not much better than a celebrity performer and maybe even worse, but I can imagine really good spin doctors making it viable.)

June Egbert is, and always has been incredibly fascinating to me because of just, how many factors have conspired to make Homestuck fans show their collective transmisogynistic asses.
The main character of Homestuck transitioning is a planned future plot point for the official continuation of homestuck, that was spoiled in advance by a fan making a joke about finding some toblerones Andrew Hussie the author of homestuck hid in a cave.
The current main writers of Homestuck: Beyond Canon have went on record in an AMA confirming that this was indeed always the plan, even before they took up the project.
In spite of these facts, the general consensus among certain homestuck fans seems to be that "June Egbert" is purely a headcanon for the original comic that was "made canon" by a "Toblerone Wish" (a concept that didn't even exist at the time)
For a variety of reasons, the "canonicity" of the postcanon official continuations of homestuck is a mattter of much debate, (though a debate that most homestuck fans seem to err on a side of "it's not canon at all in the slightest," something the writers have feelings on I'm sure.)
All of these factors combined leave the concept of "June Egbert" in a very nebulous place. It's assumed by most to just be an "ascended headcanon" that was shoehorned in, it's a spoiler so it hasn't happened yet in any official media, and the official media it will eventually happen in is regarded by some to be nothing more than glorified fanfic.
If someone is talking about June Egbert, and you don't like the concept of June Egbert, you have your pick of a million different excuses for why she's fake and gay and not worth discussing and bad writing and just the authors doing a gay dumbledore*, paying lip service to representation while actually doing nothing.
And of course, lots of people *don't* like June Egbert! Rather than being introduced as transfem from the start, she's in this nebulous position of discovery where people have to truly reckon with the idea of a "Pre-transition Trans Woman."
You can try to write off *some* of the backlash as transphobia, because obviously not everyone in this fandom is gonna be cool about trans people.
But there's no shortage of fans just dying to tell you about how much they like reading her as transmasc, or the idea of her being nonbinary or genderqueer or genderfluid, or literally anything besides a trans woman. And since they're fine with all those other interpretations, there's obviously no implicit biases driving their distaste for the concept! (if you want to try explaining the concept of "transmisogyny" to people like this you're braver than I.)
you can trust them when they say it's *just* a problem with whether or not it makes sense with the writing, or it just doesn't feel right somehow, or any of the thousands of excuses that this writing situation gives them to just Not Like It.
It's just, so interesting to me. There's not a lot of characters out there that get a trans arc in this way, that leaves room for open denialism and insistence that we have our trans cake and eat it too... Because Homestuck is a timeline spanning multiverse story, lots of people seem to want it to be an alternate timeline thing. Assuring us we can have this character share space with a non-transitioning version of herself and it won't be weird or imply gross things about trans people.
If you ask me it feels like a plotline that'd be really good for exploring some gender horror though, finding your true self and then being demoted to a footnote, an alternate version, because everyone around you likes your pre-transition self more....
Anyway I have no broader point beyond "hey look at this isn't this kinda weird. You don't get this kinda stuff often!"
*side note: it's a little ghoulish I think to compare "a future trans plot point that hasn't been given the chance to even happen yet, in an already famously queer piece of media, from a nonbinary author" to "some stupid shit done by the literal most famous transphobe of all time" but that's perhaps a discussion for later.

bringing back the question for 2025: who in the autobots would fuck a car and/or have an sti
hi i thought too long and hard about this. then i made a silly comic about it which quickly got derailed into another silly bit. and then it kept getting longer and more terrible
i don't know whether you're the same person as the original anon or not but im gonna freakin cry either way. is this my legacy...
on one hand this ask gave me lots of motivation for some reason, so thank you for that, but on the other hand it motivated me to draw a 6 page comic about robot STIs.

i put too much effort into this lmao. for my actual conclusions AND some extra notes about the comic click the read more 👍
Ratchet: No and no. Has HAD STIs before. When he was younger. True across continuities except... in TFA he would have an STI. I can see it.
Ironhide: Yes carfucking, but I feel like the carfuckin was also a one time thing specifically. No STI. To quote my notes: "Frag no, Chromia or Ratch woukd kill him". Typo included.
Jazz: Yes carfucking, no STI because if he got one he'd be on top of treatment. Originally there was a bit in the comic with Jazz and Prowl arguing about which is worse: fuckin a car or havin a STI but it got cut because its already like 6 pages
Prowl: No carfucking and yes STI. He thinks carfucking is Really Weird. Wait. Purely off of vibes because I still haven't watched ES (someday...) but ES!Prowl would fuck a car.
Optimus: Who else do you think gave Megatron the STI? (/j /j... unless?) Carfucking and STI status varies wildly across continuities imo. G1? Yes and yes. IDW... depends on what point in time. I feel like its a yes to both but not at the same time. TFA would not fuck a car but he definitely has an STI. TFP! and ES! OP is a mystery to me, you guys can tell me if you have strong opinions on them. Hm. Armada OP would fuck a car.
Sideswipe: originally it WAS going to be him in the comic but as I mentioned, it got derailed. He'd absolutely give a car an STI.
Wheeljack/Trailbreaker/Hot Rod: Yeah, probably both. Maybe not at the same time though. Hot Rod was only so low on Prowls list because hes Literally Offworld but who knows what hes capable of.
Yes to carfucking, no STI: Lets see... Bumblebee, Cliffjumper (despite Prowl and Ironhide's assumption in the comic, THIS is my actual opinion lmao), I think Mirage would as well, but he'd vehemently deny it. Also *leans in close to the mic* Elita-1 would fuck a car. But she'd do it and it'd be like. Cool.
No to carfucking, yes STI: *long pause as i look into the middle distance* mmm...Smokescreen. I don't know much about TFP!Smokescreen but he can get lumped in there too. Sunstreaker as well, but more because he says he didn't fuck a car but he could be lying and you genuinely can't tell if he is. Also Brawn for some reason.
As for other characters elsewhere... Rodimus is a strong contender for giving a car an STI. So is Whirl, but I feel like he's slightly less likely to have an STI, yknow? Only slightly.
Other notable ones I think would have both but NOT at the same time: Swerve, Skids, Drift (specifically because of Rodimus because even if they don't fuck they seem like the type of friends who share drinks), I think First Aid fits in here too, and is the only medic who would have an STI that I can think of off the top of my head. Oh also Armada!Jetfire.
I also think that the Aerialbots are all contenders for this category too. Some more than others but it wouldn't matter because they all end up with an STI and it's miserable.
ALSO...
The alternate punchline to the comic, had it been set on the Lost Light, is... a meeting (in which the general consensus is that Rodimus fucked the car that mysteriously appeared on the Lost Light, AND he gave it an STI)
Then, Nightbeat bursts in with Brainstorm in tow, and he reveals that it was in fact Brainstorm's fault- NOT because he fucked the car (he's far more interested in er... lab equipment, lets say) BUT he made a gun that fucks cars, and accidentally gave the GUN a STI
ALSO SIDEBURN FROM TF:RID (2001). he would ABSOLUTELY fuck a car and give it an STI. He canonically loves red sportscars and you KNOW that mans got an STI.
#inbox#anon#suggestive#velwy.txt#velwy.png#macaddams#transformers#tf ratchet#tf ironhide#tf jazz#tf prowl#i imagine it's an experience like getting food poisoning from gas station sushi.#does that actually exist. ive heard of it but we dont have it where i live#i hope ppl catch all the stupid things in the comic#did i have to resend this ask to myself because i posted this too early yhe other day? no what would make you think that haha. ha.#ratchet in the first panel is me fr#ignore. that i occasionally drew ironhide differently. most of this was drawn between the hours of 12 and 5am#sti saga

I keep reading that 90-99% of the world’s coral reefs is set to disappear by 2050, and recently I’ve read that they’re set to simply go extinct by 2100. Is that true?
Hi Anon!
You've hit on a topic that has really weighed on my heart for a long time. While climate change is a big focus of this blog, the environmental issue that I started my career in, and the one that often hits me hardest, is the loss of species and ecosystems.
To lose an entire species that took millions of years to evolve is a terrible loss—to lose the entirety of one of the most diverse and beautiful ecosystems on the planet is an almost unfathomable tragedy.
While I am extremely hopeful that a lot of damaged ecosystems and species will be able to rebound and adapt with the right protection and support, for a long time I couldn’t see a world where coral reefs would be able to survive—because even in the rosiest emissions scenarios, ocean warming would pass the threshold that they could withstand.
However, recently our understanding of that seems to be evolving. The bad news is that there is probably no future where coral reefs are not irreversibly altered by climate change—we will definitely lose coral species and many reefs as they are now and that is still deeply awful. The good news is there is increasing evidence that coral reefs as an ecosystem can survive in an altered but still biodiverse and beautiful form for future generations.
This study from the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology created simulated coral reefs containing a variety of common coral species as well as all the other organisms found in reef ecosystems and exposed them to different levels of warming and acidification for two years. Based on prior models and research, it was expected that all the corals would die and the mini reef ecosystems would collapse…but they didn’t. After two years, coral cover was reduced and there were changes in the amount of calcification in the corals, but the altered reef still supported high levels of biodiversity.
There have also been increased observations of coral surviving or even doing well in warming situations where they would be expected to be totally wiped out. Efforts are underway to study those reefs to see if those conditions can be replicated elsewhere, but the big takeaway seems to be pointing towards the idea that if we remove other more immediately controllable stressors from coral reefs—things like overfishing, physical damage, pollution, etc.—some or even many of them will be able to survive the warming effects of climate change.
Our understanding of how to maintain coral in human care and regrow damaged reefs in their natural habitat is also increasing at a very fast pace. This means that there is a good chance that we can keep coral species that would otherwise be driven to extinction alive either in human care or more protected areas and potentially return them to their native habitat once we have controlled other threats.
I don’t want to sugarcoat things—coral reefs are in a tough spot with regard to climate change and many big, iconic reef ecosystems will probably be unrecognizably altered. I do not want to downplay how heartbreaking that is. But life finds a way and the consensus seems to be moving in the direction of coral reefs not being as doomed as was previously thought.
If you want to learn more about this I would highly recommend this podcast from How to Save a Planet:
As well as this recent very cool interview between Hank Green and the executive director of the Coral Reef Alliance, Heather Starck (the interview starts at 2:17):

"Toshiro Is Sexist," "Toshiro Owns Slaves": What's Really Going on With This Guy?
I've seen a lot of debate on whether or not Toshiro is problematic because he's a slave owner or because he's sexist in the context of his crush on Falin. While I do want to examine his relationship to Falin, I'd like to take a few steps back and unpack his upbringing first. We'll dive into the gender and class dynamics he was raised with and how it impacts his behavior in the main storyline.
Like all people, Toshiro is shaped by the environment he grew up in. Toshitsugu, Toshiro's father and the head of the Nakamoto clan, is the most impactful model of authority and manhood in his life. Toshiro does recognize some of his father's flaws and tries to avoid replicating them. But whether or not he emulates or subverts his father's behavior, Toshitsugu is often the starting point for Toshiro's treatment of others, particularly marginalized people.
The Nakamoto clan exists under a patriarchal hierarchy with Toshitsugu at the top. As noted by @fumifooms in their Nakamoto household post, his wife has more authority than Maizuru. She's able to ban Maizuru from parts of their residence, but despite disliking his infidelity, she can't divorce him or stop him from cheating on her. Their marriage is not an equal partnership.
On an interpersonal level, Toshitsugu and Maizuru also have a fraught relationship. While she does seem to care for him, she's often frustrated by his thoughtless behavior.
For example, he drunkenly buys Izutsumi for her — without considering how she'll have to raise this child — and invades her room in the middle of the night. When he cryptically says, "It's all my fault," she replies, "I can think of a lot of things that are your fault." She calls him an "idiot" and "believes that [Toshiro] will grow up to be a better clan leader than his father," implying that she takes issue with Toshitsugu's leadership.
Because Maizuru and Toshitsugu are described as being "in an intimate relationship" and "seem[ing] to be lovers," Maizuru appears to be a consensual participant. Still, this doesn't negate the large power imbalance between them as a male noble clan leader and his female retainer. This imbalance introduces an insidious undertone to Maizuru's frustration with Toshitsugu. Like Toshiro's mother, Maizuru doesn't have the agency to do as she pleases in their relationship; he has the ultimate authority. For instance, she doesn't seem to want to raise Izutsumi, but she has to anyway.
While Maizuru's role as Toshitsugu's mistress is significant, she's also the Nakamoto clan's teacher and Toshiro's primary maternal figure. She cares deeply for Toshiro: tailing him, feeding him, and taking responsibility even for his actions as an adult. While it might seem sweet that she cares for him like a son at first, Maizuru was notably fifteen years old at the time of his birth. In the extra comic below, he's six years old and has already been in her care for some time. Even if we're being generous and assuming that she didn't start raising him until he was six, she was still only twenty-one at the time she was parenting her boss/lover's child with another woman.

Maizuru's roles as mistress and maternal figure, in addition to her role as retainer, demonstrate the intersection between gendered and class oppression in the Nakamoto household. Despite her original role being a retainer trained in espionage, Toshitsugu presses her into performing gendered labor for him and eventually, Toshiro. She's expected to be Toshitsugu's lover, perform emotional labor for him as his confidant, care for his child, and carry out domestic tasks like cooking. She says, "Even during missions, I was often dragged into the kitchen." If she was a male servant, I doubt she would have been expected to perform these additional tasks. She can't avoid these tasks either, stating that her "own feelings don't factor into it."
Toshitsugu disregards his wife's and Maizuru's desires and emotions to serve his own interests. Because he has societal power over them as a nobleman and in Maizuru's case, her master, neither woman can escape their position in the household hierarchy.
As a result, Toshiro grew up within a structure where men and male nobility, in particular, wield the most societal power. The hierarchical nature of his household and society discourages everyone, including him as a clan leader's eldest son, from questioning and disrupting the existing hierarchy.
The other Nakamoto household members also internalize its sexist, classist power dynamics.
For example, Hien expects that she and Toshiro will replicate the uneven dynamics of the previous generation, regardless of her personal feelings. She sees her and Toshiro's relationship as paralleling Maizuru and Toshitsugu's relationship; she is the closest woman to Toshiro and his retainer, so she's shocked when Toshiro doesn't attempt to begin an intimate relationship with her. Notably, she doesn't have actual feelings for him. Her expectations are centered around the household's precedent of placing emotional, sexual, domestic, and child-rearing labor onto the female servants without any regard for their personal desires.
Hien also probably knows that her position in the household will improve if she is Toshiro's lover because she's seen it improve Maizuru's position. However, the fact that being the future clan leader's lover is the closest proximity she, as a female servant, has to power further reveals the gendered, class-based oppression she and the other women live under.
It's important to note that the Nakamoto clan bought Benichidori, Izutsumi, and Inutade as slaves, so they have less power and agency than Maizuru and Hien. The clan further dehumanizes Izutsumi and Inutade as demi-humans; their enslavement contains an additional layer of racialization.
Toshiro isn't oblivious to the gendered, class, and racial power dynamics of his household. He tries to distance himself from participating in its exploitative power structure. He walls himself off from Hien, who he's known since childhood, to avoid replicating his father's behavior and making his servant into his lover. He disapproves of his father's enslavement of Izutsumi and Inutade, and he lets Izutsumi go when she runs away in the Dungeon.
But does any of this absolve him of his complicity in his household's sexist, classist power dynamics and racialized slavery?
The short answer is absolutely not.
Despite his distaste for his father's exploitation of his servants and slaves, Toshiro still uses them. He refers to his party as "his retainers," and he has them fight and perform domestic tasks for him. You could argue that Toshiro doesn't like to and thus, doesn't regularly use his servants and slaves. In the context of him asking his retainers to help him rescue Falin, Maizuru says, "The only time he ever made any sort of personal request was for this task." But it shouldn't matter whether exploitation is a regular occurrence or not for it to be considered harmful. Toshiro asking Maizuru to cook him a meal still constitutes asking his female servant to perform gendered labor for him. He's also very accustomed to her grooming and dressing him.
Maizuru sees feeding, washing, and even advising Toshiro romantically as fulfilling Toshitsugu's orders to care for his son. They aren't fulfilling a "personal request." But just because her labor has been deemed expected and thereby devalued doesn't mean that it isn't labor or that she isn't performing it.
Maizuru's dynamic with Toshiro is also complicated by her role as his maternal figure. She loves him and wants to take care of him, and she doesn't have a choice in the matter. During Toshiro's childhood, the onus was on Toshitsugu to cease exploiting his lover and release her from servitude, but Toshiro is now an adult man. Seeing as how Maizuru defers to his wishes and calls him "Young Master," they still have a power imbalance that he's passively maintaining. Ideally, he would not ask anything of her until he has the authority to release her from servitude.
Throughout the story, Toshiro acts as if he has no agency and quietly disapproving of his father's actions absolves him of his participation in maintaining oppressive dynamics. While his father still ranks higher than him, he's essentially his father's heir. He has much more power than Maizuru, the highest-ranked servant. At the very least, he could leave his slave-owning household.
Unfortunately, his refusal to confront injustice is consistent with his character's major flaw: he does not express his opinions, desires, or needs. While this character trait obviously hurts his friendships, it also furthers his complicity in the injustices his household runs on.
Toshiro's relationship with eating food — the prevailing metaphor of the series — also parallels his relationship with confronting injustice. Maizuru mentions that he was a sickly child, so the act of eating may have been physically uncomfortable for him. As an adult, his refusal to eat crops up during his rescue attempt of Falin. Denying himself food might have been punishment for not accomplishing important tasks like rescuing Falin and/or a way to maintain control over something in his life when he felt like he'd lost control over the rest of it, again in the context of losing Falin. (Note: I suggest reading this post on Toshiro's disordered eating by @malaierba.)
But he cannot and does not avoid consuming food forever.
Similarly, Toshiro keeps his distance from his retainers and tries not to use them until the Falin situation occurs. His efforts to avoid exploiting his retainers amount to inaction — things he doesn't ask of them or do to them. But his inaction does nothing to dismantle the existing hierarchy that places his retainers under his authority, denies them agency, and often marginalizes them as not only servants or slaves but as women, and he ends up using them as servants and slaves anyways.

Returning to the narrative's themes of consumption, Toshiro cannot avoid eating just as he cannot avoid perpetuating the exploitative system of his household. The Nakamoto clan consumes the labor and personhood of those lower in the hierarchy. The retainers' labor as spies and domestic servants is the foundation of the clan's existence. Thus, the clan consumes their labor to sustain itself.
Within this hierarchy, the retainers' personhood is also consumed and erased. As Izutsumi describes, they are given different names and stripped of their agency to reject orders or leave. Maizuru and Hien also say their feelings are irrelevant in the context of Toshitsugu's and Toshiro's wants and needs. Both women are expected to comply with whatever is most beneficial and comfortable for the noblemen. Clearly, despite Toshiro's detachment from his household's functions, these social structures remain in place and harm the women under him.
Although we know the Nakamoto clan has male retainers, the choice to highlight the female retainers seems intentional. We're asked to interrogate how not only being a servant or a slave in a noble household impacts a person's life and agency, but how being a woman intersects with being a member of some of the lowest social classes.
Toshiro only distances himself from his father's behaviors of infidelity and exploitation so long as it doesn't take Toshiro out of his comfort zone. He doesn't free his slaves. He's far too comfortable with his female retainers performing domestic labor for him, and he barely acknowledges their efforts; they're shocked when he thanks them for helping him save Falin. He hasn't unpacked his sexist (or classist or racist) biases because he perpetuates his household's oppressive hierarchy throughout the narrative. Considering all of this, he inevitably brings this baggage to his interactions with Falin.
Falin is presumably one of the first women he's had extended contact with that isn't his relative or his family's servant. Because of his trauma surrounding his father and Maizuru sleeping together, he understandably falls for a woman as disconnected as possible from his father and his clan. He seems to genuinely like Falin, respects her boundaries, and graciously accepts her rejection. His behavior towards her is overall kind and unproblematic.
But if Falin had gone with him, she would've likely been devalued and sidelined like the other women of the Nakamoto household. No matter how much he loves Falin, simply loving her cannot replace the difficult work of unlearning his sexism. Love, of course, can and should be accompanied by that work, but by the close of the narrative, we gain little indication that Toshiro acknowledges or seeks to end his part in exploiting and devaluing women and other marginalized people.
A spark of hope does exist. Toshiro expressing his feelings to Laios and Falin suggests that his time away from home has encouraged him to speak up more. Breaking his habit of avoidance may be the first step towards acknowledging his complicity in systems of injustice and moving towards dismantling them.
Special thanks to my very smart friend @atialeague for bringing up Toshitsugu's relationship with Maizuru and the replication of dynamics of consumption and class! <3

Rules and the like!
Song poll blog inspired by things like @doyoulikethis-videogame-song, @doyoulikethissong-poll and Guess the Game.
The general gist is similar to most if not all of these blogs in which a small clip of SFX from a video game will be isolated and posted here, with polls for people to vote on how well known it is.
This page'll most likely be updated the more this kinda stuff goes on.
Should go without saying but transphobes, aphobes and exclusionists are not welcome here.
Submissions are: CLOSED
Header and pinned post art by @forgetmenautical (thank you!)
Active Tags:
#open vote : Polls that are open
#closed vote : Polls that have been closed and the SFX source revealed
#dykasks : Asks for the blog.
#off-topic : For anything off topic - may be related to the blog or an update/announcement!
General FAQ:
Do you take submissions:
Yes! Though only when submissions are open. This will be through a google form that will open and close periodically, whenever I have the time!
When are the polls revealed/answered?:
Genuinely, whenever I feel like it! I've asked the blog a few times but general consensus seems to enjoy random reveals.
Will there be scheduled posts at specific times?:
Right now I'm scheduling around 3 posts at 4pm GMT every day, though this may change with my own schedule/if submissions are running low.
I'll do my best to keep it going! :D
What is your name/pronouns:
You can call me Smudge. He/They, transmasc! Nice to meet you :3
How can we submit sounds to you?:
Assuming the form is open - any which way is fine by me. This could be through a youtube video, a google drive link, filegarden, catbox etc etc.
Can we say the answer in the tags?:
I would prefer if people didn't as this goes against the spirit of the game- However, very vague hints are fine by me! Be warey of spoilers in the notes if you want to play along!
My submission wasn't posted?:
I will post every submission I get to the best of my ability but if I cannot locate or find the isolated audio I will have skip as game noise can warp or disturb the sound itself. I will do my best to find it isolated beforehand, but if I cannot then it must be skipped, apologies!
A good resource for finding game SFX is The Sound Resource but unfortunatly not every game has a clean rip for its sounds!
This isn't an SFX!:
For the sake of variety on this blog as long as the sound is triggered by a specific action - it counts as a sound effect. A sound effect, to this blog, is generally anything that has a noise tied to its action. This could be collecting a coin, jumping, healing etc etc.
Can we submit voicelines?:
This is tricky, mostly yes.
I would say things like Hornet's "SHAW" from Hollow Knight count for this blog and I would accept them vs something like a clip from Cave Johnson's Lemon Rant I would not accept! Use your best judgement when submitting, but voicelines and clips are not specifically off of the table.
Can we submit sounds from NSFW games?:
Sounds from NSFW games, such as Honeypop, are fine to submit as long as the SFX itself is not NSFW in nature.
A moan or anything akin to that from a NSFW game (Dark Souls 1 Hollow and Mr Kennedy are exempt from this because I think its funny) would not be accepted.
This SFX was used somewhere else!:
This blog will run both on submissions and generally what the sound is more associated with rather than its original source! Not every SFX is original and some are used from specific sound libraries. The Roblox OOF, for example, comes from a game named Messiah - however, if a submitter has submitted its source asRoblox, thats what this blog will use as its source.
I will also be going off of what people say is the Context/Source for a game so sorry if that is ever wrong! If it is entirely, 100% incorrect in terms of where its from you can send me a message and I'll change it!
Can you tag scary/sounds from horror games?:
The point of the game is listening to unexpected sounds, and "scary" is an extremely subjective description. I will do my best to avoid posting loud jumpscare sounds or other sounds that I think are unpalatable to a general audience, but beyond that I don't intend on tagging specific types of sounds at this time.
How many SFX can we submit in the form?:
2 per person with ideally no repeat games in your own submissions!
You didn't answer my ask/did you recieve my ask?:
I tend to be doing other things while this blog runs on a queue, I try my best to answer and give the best responses I can for this blog to make it more accessible/comfortable and for everyone to contribute to this fun little game!
However- if you've noticed I haven't answered your ask, it's not personal. It may be due to it already being answered here, too spoilery concerning specific polls, inappropriate subjects for this blog or I may just keep asks in my inbox if they're especially nice/kind to look back on!
Can we add XYZ to the voting options?:
I am quite happy with the three options as they are! I prefer not to muddy polls with very specific options, making votes a little more strict. Generally all 3 cover everything they should.
This sound is too loud/quiet!:
In all seriousness, if a sound is genuinely too loud, shoot me an ask. I'll see if its appropriate to add a warning!
What kind of games do you like/play!:
Here's my topsters list!

I'm very open to receiving questions about any and all games though- and hearing recommendations/games you all like too!

house md rewatch: 2x15, "clueless"
"love will make you do wrong" oh i'm sure.
this is one of those recaps where i'm definitely just reiterating what the writers were putting down, but it's so insane that it bears in-depth repeating imo.
please believe me when i say this rewatch project's goal is a wholistic view of the entire series. yet, with that in mind, you can imagine the stress i feel when what seems like an episode devoted entirely to unpacking intimate interpersonal relationships has hilson as the fulcrum. and not just hilson - equal character development for both house and wilson as the domesticity shenanigans unfold.
that's not to downplay the patient story - it's crazy, and i'm kind of obsessed with it. the zebra factor is probably way off the charts, but i love the extra sherlockian vibe and the confirmation that house md can, in fact, do shock value without throwing entire identities under the bus (@ 2x13). all that plus the horror movie opening? golden (lmfao).
from the top, then. look at his triangle ass stance here:
we can safely say, i'd argue, that 2000s audiences were supposed to laugh at how much wilson cares about his appearance; i'm laughing, too, but in a 2020s Woke Queer Way. and house lasts just one night with wilson crashing on his couch before he says that this won't work; his domestic sphere has been invaded by someone he doesn't know how to account for, at least not in this capacity. one of the things we know about house thus far is that routine is immeasurably valuable to him.
it also kills me how devastated wilson is to hear that house wants him out, along with his sassy retort about house's hair, or "what's left of it." gagged.
this entire episode is based on the (heterosexual) domicile. it also devotes a lot of time qualifying the patient and his partner, bob and maria, as Sexually Freaky (tm). they upend traditional notions of marriage, partnership, and sex through their kinks/bdsm, including consensual noncon sex. the team leaps to the initial conclusion that bob's sudden suffocation comes from repeated history of rough sex, which is quickly disproven.
maria and bob's sex life absolutely boggles everyone's minds...except for cameron's lol. the growing fluidity with which she treats relationships as some of her convictions adapt (not dissolve! just shift!) is really interesting to me, like it interests chase, too lol.
2x15 persistently deconstructs maria and bob's personal lives until its full ugliness is on display (while unforch being a little kink-shamey, but we can look past this). despite their insistence that they're happy, maria is secretly poisoning her husband. despite their pristine home, what takes place in there is only thinly disguised intermarital violence. cameron's bet on their happiness falls flat on its face, and house md argues that a frontward functional relationship will always be plagued with deeper issues.
those issues are not represented visually, however! let's contrast the 2 major sites of domesticity in this episode:
foreman's remarks that maria and bob keep an impeccably clean place contrasts with wilson's general opinion of house's apartment. over the seasons, we see house's place in various states of disarray, though it's chock full of his personality and history, whereas maria and bob's place is just cold, 2000s chic. this reinforces the subliminal distance between maria and bob and captures the degree to which wilson is invited into house's personal life.
next i want to tackle the emphasis on food, poisoning, and choking in 2x15. i thought it was a silly bullet point in my notes until i actually sat down to right this (like literally in this moment!). after repeatedly arguing that bob was poisoned with heavy metals, house eventually lands on the theory that maria is behind it. it's not until the end does 2x15 reveal that she's been dosing his food with gold (don't ask me the full name lmfao), scarring his lungs over time.
meanwhile, in stuffed pepper, pancake, salad, and sandwich land:
house pretends to find the bell peppers stinky but takes a liking to the rest of wilson's cooking immediately. no poison to be had here. in an outwardly dysfunctional domestic situation, food sharing (however reluctant) is a net positive. wilson's final note warning house off his lunch is closer to a joke than a formal warning:
if it's not clear, i'm casting house as maria and wilson as bob in this off-kilter domesticity parallel, and a subtle but brilliant example of this comes at the very end. while maria is taken away in handcuffs, house rushes back home on his motorcycle. while foreman and chase inform bob that maria was trying to kill him, wilson sleeps soundly on house's couch. viewers are also treated to al green's "love and happiness" in the background, with the very poignant lyric: "love will make you do wrong."
everything about house/wilson and maria/bob is reversed, along with their respective "wrongs." 2x15 is funny and crazy enough to suggest that house deleting the message about wilson's apartment is symbolically akin to maria killing bob slowly over time. look how they both gaze upon their domestic partners - one with faux guilt on their face, and the other with faux annoyance:
i've spent all this time building to the following argument: in pretending that he hates having wilson around, 2x15 subverts the assumed happiness brought on by a heteronormative domestic space. as much as maria pretends to love bob, house pretends to hate living with wilson. maria tries to remove bob from her domestic (and from this earth lol) while house tries to keep wilson around. we spend an entire episode unearthing how sinister a sexually charged heterosexual marriage can be, only to arrive at the house and wilson dynamic of it all.
i'm not even strictly hilson posting here, just highlighting how bizarre it is in that 2000s network tv decided to deconstruct heteronormativity, however intentionally/unintentionally. it's not my fault that wilson has to make everything about sex. and that every moment of this episode is about sex except for the moments spent between house and wilson.
lastly, one of the concluding scenes between house and the fellows is a nice example of audience/house solidarity, something the entire show does subtly throughout to get us squarely in his headspace. the four of them are ruminating over what could possibly motivate someone to kill their partner, which cameron seems especially appalled by.
in response, house makes a slew of interesting deductions: "maybe she just got tired of being married. didn't want to admit to family and friends that the marriage everyone thought was perfect wasn't."
i call this house solidarity because we know for a fact that he's talking about wilson's situation...but who within his marriage? we never meet julie (which, apart from the unfortunate fridging, i think is a good narrative choice), so we don't get her side of the story or understand if/how she's been open about her and wilson's separation. all we know, and all that house cares to know, is that wilson's marriage isn't perfect.
this next bit is informed by my hilson brain, but there's been a subtle thrill in house in the face of wilson's separation. i get the sense that he hopes he's talking about wilson here, that he hopes wilson got tired of being married because things (in the aforementioned heteronormative relationship!) are imperfect. and, as if to secure this hope, he deletes the message about the apartment while looking especially smug.
this line of dialogue also does some work in acknowledging wilson's vulnerability. like the patient in 2x14 suggested, we can't be afraid to look stupid. by nature of showing up at house's door, he's admitted that things aren't perfect. that's their give-and-take; wilson lets house in emotionally while house lets wilson in physically. given house's reliance on routine and privacy, this is an equal exchange.
here's my actual final note: why can't wilson realize that he has a real love language? FOOD! and acts of service! you don't just have to sleep with everyone you love! there are other ways to express these things! you literally had a spoon at the ready for house! and you seem so secretly pleased when he doesn't hate the taste!
#listened to billy joel's 'matter of trust' during this one#also if you can't tell i'm esp having the time of my life rn i fucking lov e this arc#literally sat here just shrugging rn because this episode is such a wonderful mess#like pregaming season 6#i'm sorry to be sidelining the ducklings lately but i have a one track mind from 2x14 to 2x19 tbh#2x17 'all in' is hurtling towards me at mach speed rn#house md#malpractice md#greg house#james wilson#allison cameron#eric foreman#robert chase#hilson#house md rewatch#rewatch 1#season 2

I have a question. How does this work as far as PR if they are both not even trying to make it look legit? What is the point? How does this benefit either of them, especially since so few are buying it?!? I feel like this is way less believable than any other one he has done and I am not sure what the motivation is behind it at all considering both seem so damn reluctant to be doing it in the first place! Any insight?!?
ok so this wasn’t gonna be a welcome to the show bc it’s less educational and more so me venting about it but here ya go anon. welcome to the show!
I agree that it’s the least believable so far, from their individual public image, to their awkward and cringy actions around each other, to the fact that she seemingly appeared out of nowhere in his life and there was barely any soft launch. It’s like whoever is in charge of it learnt nothing from the years of the 1d stunts, and have reverted so far back in a day and age where things need to look far more legit now than they used to, due to social media, solo careers etc.
Anyway, because we’re in the thick of it, it seems a lot more clear to us that it’s fake. It has been interesting though, the comments on the articles from GP, Deuxm*i’s latest little comment that I just posted about, already a “trouble in paradise” article that we usually wouldn’t receive until farther down the line… so much flailing and scrambling. However, even with more suspicion from the GP than usual, most of them are gonna read the headline and move on, or click the article and not look at the GP’s comments. It still technically does what it’s meant to do, but they’ve just…. Fucked it up a lot earlier than usual.
Interestingly enough though, like you mentioned, it doesn’t even look like she is trying either. Usually with these stunts we’ll at least get the girl trying to make it look legit, but she’s clearly got no interest in this either… which leads me to believe it is for a reason other than album promo due to it being such a hard launch straight from the bat, no slow burn or organic elements at all, and some of the worst chemistry I’ve ever seen in a stunt pairing.
Apart from the handful of weird solos/antis who are obsessed with them and trying so hard to love it, the general consensus this time around just isn’t that believable for everyone. From the paps magically being able to drive down past a gate onto private property the exact moment they’re saying goodbye and getting those PDA pics, to the walk around the parking lot “a few days before” when Louis was in the same clothes, it’s just.. soooo sloppy. And surely his team can’t be THIS bad at their job… because it doesn’t just come down to how Louis and her act with each other, but also the way the information is presented to us and the GP and it’s been entirely fumbled.
I don’t think this is gonna be long lasting, I don’t think she’s gonna be the inspo for his album (although a little bit of het encouragement doesn’t hurt I suppose), and I think (and hope) there’s something more to this than PR for her merch and SoccerAid promo.
I mean the whole thing about it even potentially being for the sole purpose of SoccerAid doesn’t make sense to me. We are gonna watch Louis regardless - he has an absolute cult of a fandom. We’re not sitting on the edge of our seats going “ooohhhh better watch SoccerAid now!! I wasn’t planning to but now there could be tension between him and her ex boyf!! I wanna see the drama!!” or “ohh they’re so cute she’s gonna be there cheering him on, let’s watch!!” because that’s just not how his fandom works. And it’s not gonna convince the GP to watch for those reasons either. And if that is in fact the sole reason for this all, well… his PR team know absolutely nothing about us and have been slacking hard when it comes to understanding the relationship the fandom has with Louis. Including all the relationship lore over the past 15 years, both with stunts and Harry.
Like… not the “body language expert” analysing the photos to try and convince people they are in fact together and soooooo in love because even the media knows no one is gonna believe this shit with the quality of the pictures we’re getting from them. It’s just so embarrassing.
If it is in fact to end another stunt or kickstart the friendship narrative between H&L, then that would be great. Maybe they’re having to rush it all for some reason. But for any other reason to have it this rushed and awkward… it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Title: Gorefest.

Word Count: 1.3k.

You found his latest gift on your doorstep.
It was a heart, this time – deflated but otherwise fully intact, blue viens still visible against pink flesh. A small puddle of blood and other gelatinous viscera surrounded it, but you ignored that in favor of wrapping the disembodied organ in your cardigan and unlocking the door to your apartment, too exhausted to fumble with your keys and too worn down to pretend you still thought you could get away from him on your own. His present was dropped into the ever-bubbling vat of crimson slurry you used to boil down his gifts until they’d been reduced to a less incriminating state, your shoes kicked off and left by the door. You didn’t bother turning on any lights. You were home, but you didn’t want to let yourself acknowledge that until he was gone.
You found Gojo in his usual spot; on the floor of your bedroom, his hands still stained red and one of your threadbare sleepshirts crumpled at his side, the dark material stained with something white and awful. That made two articles of clothing ruined, tonight. A few months ago, when the most he ever brought you was a half-beaten bouquet of roses and a list of questions for the strange man whose favorite place in the world seemed to be your living room, you would’ve been tempted to demand that he pay for the damages. You’d learned better than to imply you wanted anything from him, since then.
He was lying on his side, toying with something large and vaguely circular, his grin that of a cat dropping a slaughtered mouse at its owner’s feet. He was surrounded by more of his ‘presents’ – the disembodied organs of whatever poor criminal or curse user he’d taken it upon himself to dissect. You were glad you’d kept the lights off. You could see the outline of small intestine strung along the walls, assorted gore left in carefully considered piles wherever Gojo deemed it necessary. It’d take hours to clean up, after he left. Demanding that he help would only give him the impression that you wanted to spend time with him, and you weren’t going to make that mistake twice.
You moved to speak, but as always, he just had to be the center of attention. It was like he couldn’t imagine a world where you might’ve done anything but focus on him. “Welcome home,” he half-sung, pushing himself up and pulling his oblong, mishappen keepsake into his lap. “Do you want to start with dinner, or should I run you a hot bath? Or, if you want, you could always have a little of me—”
“Shut the fuck up.” And then, pointing in the general direction of your front door, “Get out.”
“So cold, babe. And after I went through all that trouble to set this up.” The coppery stench was starting to get to you. You could only pray the neighbors wouldn’t notice, or that you’d be able to think of a feasible enough excuse by the time they did. “I got hurt for you, too.” He held up a hand, gesturing towards the faintest, shallowest cut on his cheek. “Aren’t you going to dote on me? You know, like you used to – after you found me in that alley and bandaged my wounds. What was the first thing you said to me? That I was too pretty to bleed to death alone?”
You didn’t encourage him with a response, only crossing your arms over your chest and deepening your scowl. “Get out,” you repeated. “I don’t want you here.”
His grin only broadened. “If you keep saying things like that, I might start to think you’re trying to get me to leave.” Exasperation bled into your agitated expression, and Gojo let out a bark of a laugh. “Look, I know you like to play shy, but I’d really like it if we could use tonight for us. We could watch a movie, or—”
You let out a frustrated groan, dragging your hands over your face. “You know what? Fine. If you want to be here so badly, then stay.” You shut your eyes, standing a little taller. “I’m getting out of here.”
“Running off to spend the night with another man? Ah, what a cold-hearted temptress I’ve fallen for.”
“Oh, I’m going to do more than just spend the night with him.” You really should’ve shut your mouth. You should’ve bitten your tongue, swallowed your pride, refused to tell him anything save for the fact that you weren’t going to stay here any longer. But, the blood in the air was getting to you and you could still feel the cold flesh of the heart against your palm and you needed to get away, and you needed Gojo to know you were never coming back. “I met someone – a sorcerer. He knows you’ve been stalking me, and he offered to help.” You flashed him a grin, almost as awful as his own. “His name is Nanami, and he’s strong enough to keep me safe from people like you.”
You waited for him to laugh, to say he didn’t believe you, or better yet, to get angry, to feel a fraction of the dread and the rage he’d forced onto you. When he didn’t say anything, didn’t scream or yell or gloat, you opened your eyes. He was still staring, but his smile was softer, his eyes half-lidded in a way that could only mean something bad. “Oh, baby,” he started, his voice dripping with faux sympathy. “Whose heart do you think I went through so much trouble to bring you?”
A pebble threatening to slip off of its cliffside; two ends of a torn wire, a hair’s width away from connecting. Whatever he was trying to tell you, you just couldn’t seem to process it. “What?”
“Right. I’m sorry, sweetheart – that’s on me,” Gojo chuckled. “You were always more of a visual learner.”
The object in his lap was taken up and rolled towards you, coming to a teetering stop at your feet, where the residual light from the hall could illuminate it properly. In a daze, you dropped your gaze to it, allowed yourself to recognize blonde hair, razor-sharp cheekbones, and glassy brown eyes staring lifelessly back at you. There was a dark bruise on his jawline, paled by blood loss, and the mangled stump that used to be his neck was encircled by ragged flesh, as if it’d been torn from his shoulders. Despite everything, his mouth was closed, lips still pressed into a thin frown. As if he didn’t have time to so much as scream before Gojo got to him.
You must’ve passed out. One second, you were staring down at the disembodied head of your savior, and the next, you were on the floor, lying limp and breathless as Nanami’s blood formed a puddle underneath you. Gojo was already at your side, hauling you up and against his chest. You felt his arms around you, then plush of your mattress against your back. You were aware, distantly, that he was straddling you, that his mouth was pressing into the dip of your shoulder, then the curve of your throat. “It’s alright,” he muttered, his voice partially muttered by his closeness. “Why don’t you come stay with me for a while, after this? I’ve got a room ready for you back at my place and everything.”
He didn’t wait for an answer. Straightening his back, he let his lips crash into yours – his kiss lingering and deep and filthy. By the time he pulled away, he’d drunk the air from your lungs and frozen the blood in your veins, leaving you as empty and as lifeless as one of his gifts.
You thought, idly, of the heart being reduced to viscera in your kitchen, and wondered if you should’ve held onto it for just a few minutes longer.
“I’ll be able to spoil you properly, once I’ve got you where you’re supposed to be.”

Somewhat in line with that last reblog, have some unedited stobin I was messing around with the other day
Edit: now on AO3
After the door closed behind Family Video’s sole patron of the evening, Steve dropped his customer service smile and slumped over the counter.
“Everything would be so much easier if I was gay.”
Usually Robin could follow Steve's thoughts like they were her own, but in this case…
“You’re going to need to walk me through your logic there. Also: doubtful.”
“Yeah, you're right. Most things would be harder if I was gay. It's just,” Steve raked a hand through his hair, then leaned on one arm so he could look at her without fully unslumping. “Okay, so, you know when a girl's really hot, but not just hot. Like, you see her across the room and you want her to look at you. But looking isn't enough; you want to reach out to her. Stroke her hair, maybe. Make her laugh, because even if she's laughing at you it's the most beautiful sound you've ever heard-”
“I'm familiar with crushes,” Robin interrupted. “Gay people have them, too.”
“I know.” He gave her a pointed look and did not bring up how much of their conversations this month had been about Vickie. “I know what to do when I have a crush on a girl. And I know what you should do when you have a crush on a girl - which starts with talking to her - because you’re gay.”
Robin chose to ignore Steve’s completely useless advice about Vickie in favor of drawing what seemed like a pretty far-fetched conclusion.
“You have a crush on a boy? And you don’t know what to do about it?” she asked. He nodded. “Are you sure you’re not gay? Because crushing on a boy is not typical straight behavior. Unless you’re a girl. Which you’re not-”
“I know I like girls, though,” Steve interrupted her. “I’m not the smartest guy, and I know I miss stuff when it’s not what I expect, but I’ve had a lot of experience with girls. I’d’ve noticed if I weren’t interested. Wouldn’t I?”
“I think so?” Robin shrugged. Steve really wasn’t the most observant guy, but like he’d said, he was experienced. And very much a hands-on learner. If he didn’t like girls he’d’ve worked it out after three or four girlfriends. “Maybe you like both?”
“Is that a thing?” Steve cocked his head to one side, considering.
“Why would I know more about that than you? You’re the one having the crushes.”
“You’ve been gay forever. This is my first crush on a boy.” Steve sighed. “He’s not even that hot. Why couldn’t my first gay crush have been on a hotter guy.”
Okay, that was not quite a whole new can of worms, more of an adjacent can. An additional can of the same worms?
“Do you find a lot of guys hot?” she asked, cranking the can opener and dumping its squirmy contents on the family video counter.
“Just the hot ones. Same as with girls,” Steve answered promptly. Robin gave him a minute to let what he’d said sink in. “Is that weird? Do you not know when guys are hot?”
“I have never been able to figure out if a guy is supposed to be hot without being told.” If asked, Robin always pretended to like movie stars. Tom Cruise was hot by general consensus, even if she had no idea what about him was appealing.
“So you don’t think I’m hot? That hurts, Rob.” Steve pouted. “I think you’re hot.”
“Yeah, because you like girls.”
“Boys, too, I guess.” Steve sighed again and shook his head. “I’m gonna have to grow a pair and talk to him, aren’t I?”
“That is literally the opposite of what I would tell you to do.” It was also exactly the advice Steve always gave her. Her dingus was so stupidly brave. “Be careful, okay? I’d rather not flee an angry mob with you until after I graduate.”

It could've changed since I'm not exactly entrenched in Hatchetfield/Starkid discourse, however, I remember when "Nerdy Prudes Must Die" first came out the general consensus was that the ending wasn't as tragic as the precedent that had been set by the others. But I was thinking about it just today, and I don't think that's true.
Obviously we have full on zombie apocalypse in Tgwdlm, and then nuclear annihilation in Black Friday. So I can understand how in comparison a religiously repressed girl with a shifted moral compass possessing a demonic book seems to pale in comparison. But I think it's the implications we need to focus on. You HAVE to think about the implications.
Because I think it's implied that the same level of devastation will take place, just a lot slower. Because like I said Grace's morals are screwed. They're off center, and they will only continue to shift further and further from that center til no one's safe. It's like with Max -who if you remember she was directly paralleled with a la nerdy Prudes Must die turned to dirty dudes must die- we actively see his definition of nerdy prude shift in order to justify killing the mayor. I think we're even told that his definition will keep changing, the goal post constantly shifting, until he's reason to kill everyone. I think the same can be said for Grace. We already seen her definition of a "dirty dude" is pretty loose. A light peck on the first date is already immoral to her. It's not hard to see how she can manipulate her world view again and again until there's nothing left. No one of true virtue.
Not to make this real but we see that sort of thing in real life. People of higher power going after the little guy, constantly editing what the little guy is, and what the little guy can do. And after all the minorities are taken care of who do you think they'll go after next? Because they're not done, no, they're never done. No one is safe it's just a matter of when.
Everyone still dies at the end of Npmd, we just don't see it. And maybe she gets stopped, maybe she's caught before she can get that far. She is after all just one teenager with what amounts to a spell book. But I dunno the same could be said for the other endings. A zombie apocalypse doesn't spell out the end, there's enough shows about 'em to attest to that, same with nuclear warfare. We could have a Fallout situation you don't know. Obviously those are worse than if Grace just kills a bunch of people then gets jailed for it. But we don't know if any of that would happen. All we have is what they leave us with, and the implied devastation.
My point is I don't think the Npmd ending is so bad, or anticlimactic, or any less tragic than the others. It's just a less obvios in it's tragedy. In a way it's almost worse. All the characters none the wiser as they party without a care. No clue what is to come, and how badly this spells for them. Because we know Grace doesn't align with Peter or Steph. We know they'll be on her list eventually.
And maybe everyone already knows all this, and maybe I just like yapping :)
