One thing about coming from a tiny conservative town and becoming transgender at university is how quickly you find out that the “crazy liberal ideas” that you heard about at home are Not Enough. The “gender-neutral washrooms” that your parents were so up in arms about are so rare you might just end up using the one that aligns with your AGAB anyways. The “share your pronouns with the class” discussions that your family scoffed at back home are equally mocked here, and only make you uncomfortable. Somehow conservative media told you that everyone at university is gay and transgender, that it’s some kind of pandemic seizing the youth of today, but thats not what you find when you get here. You were told to be afraid of sharing your room with a trans person before you came to university, but now it seems more likely that your roommate is going to be a transphobe. You still haven’t changed your gender marker on the school website, although it’s technically easy - you have to worry if it will affect your housing, the resources available to you, the way that your seemingly-friendly RAs and RCs look at you.

the background knowledge: the most critical period of spoken language acquisition is between birth and age five. in the new dr. brenner clip, el was about seven. during s1, she was about twelve. both events take place after this critical developmental period.

the observations: number ten was able to converse with relative ease and fluidity. only in s3 does el seem to reach a comparable level of verbal proficiency (and barely, at that). if i’m counting right, el seems to be the only number not playing in the rainbow room or interacting with a scientist.

the conclusion: even before she apparently murdered an entire lab full of people, el was known to be and set aside as different, special, possibly dangerous. time spent with her peers and caregivers (excluding dr. brenner) was restricted. this led to el’s limited syntax and vocabulary, which we can see in s1, and her general disinterest in speaking unless necessary, which we we can see in all three seasons plus the new clip. while the Incident may have pushed dr. brenner to run a tighter ship, it was likely not the catalyst for el’s isolation and the terrible, unsympathetic treatment she is a victim of.

the prediction (don’t hold me to this): in s4, we will learn that el has always had some sort of specialness to her, even among other superpowered children. while previously unknown powers are (imo) unlikely this late in the game, she may have had a special connection/link to the ud/vecna/other weirdness even before she opened the gate. (naturally, that will be key to s4 or s5’s saving of the world.) alternately, she could simply be in possession of more/stronger/scarier powers.

the second prediction: while watching s4, i will realize that i was waaaaaaay overthinking this

st5 theory: el finds vecna in will’s mind!

This is a theory for how El will enter Will’s mind to find Vecna at the beginning of st5, and how that might play out with Will’s powers getting revealed. I’m not sure if it will make total sense but hopefully enough sense for other people to weigh in!

Recently I’ve seen some videos (from @_stfaves on tiktok go check it out fr!!) about how they have already filmed part of s5 in which Will gets cursed. The highlights from those videos is that Noah was filming in his finale outfit at Rink-O-Mania, Lonnie’s actor was at s4 table reads, and ofc the infamous picture Noah posted wearing a harness with his finale outfit. This points to him getting cursed and reliving the events at Rink-O-Mania and the abuse from his father, before the time jump. In fact, it would have to occur on the same day that the Cali gang returns to Hawkins, because of his attire.

However, when we left off in s4, Vecna’s base of operations was pretty badly destroyed, he was badly burned, and Will said that he was “hurting.” Basically, Vecna is wounded and the place from which he attacks is unusable. Plus, he wouldn’t have any apparent reason to curse Will like that, since the purpose of cursing the other victims was to open gates. Or, at least, it doesn’t seem as though he will strike again just 2 days later, while he is wounded.

Now that our team knows that Vecna is still around but he is badly hurt, I think that they will want to strike back as soon as possible, to prevent Vecna from rebounding at all. That is when Will or El proposes that she looks for the piece of the Mindflayer/Vecna that is in Will. We have already seen El do this with Billy in s3. (Bonus if we get protective Mike again, this time not wanting to put Will in danger, plus worried that Vecna will be able to find them like Billy did.)

So I imagine that El’s search in Will’s mind plays out very similarly to what we saw with Billy. I was rewatching that episode recently, and it really reminded me of what we know of Vecna’s mind from s4. I couldn’t find screenshots of when he was skimming through various people’s trauma before Patrick gets a nosebleed, so just look at the scene with Max compared Billy’s mind.

It’s the red and the darkness and the smoke and the lightning… Plus, now we know the reason that El had to encounter these moments of trauma for Billy. That is where Vecna thrives, how he targets his victims. Max says herself that he uses people’s memories against them, but only their darkest ones. She says, “It’s like he only sees the darkness in us.” So, as El goes to find him in Will, it makes sense for her to witness some of his past trauma, likely from his dad.

However, this does not explain Will’s finale outfit at Rink-O-Mania. This is where my theory might get a little bit sloppy but hear me out. Will gets Vecna’d from within his own mind. This will take a lot of exposition to explain.

This relies on the assumption that Will has had powers from the beginning. I think they must have occurred spontaneously, or however 001’s happened. That is, his powers didn’t come from 001 like El’s did. He is special, but his powers (if he has them) are obviously dormant. There were some weird things going on in s1 during his time in the Upside Down, but it’s not clear what his powers actually are. I think that Vecna knows, or has suspicions, so he formed an incredibly strong psychic connection with Will when he took him and kept him in the Upside Down. I think his goal with the Mindflayer was to control Will without killing him. Vecna says that all of his victims are still in his mind, but he wanted El’s power externally. He wanted her to join him, so he probably needs her strength. If he could get that from Will without having to convince him, by simply taking over his mind, that would be ideal. And, although the Mindflayer was exorcized at the end of s2, Will still shares a psychic connection with Vecna.

Thus, the manifestation of Vecna in his mind, I assume, will be a bit different. It doesn’t have a hold on Will’s behavior, but I think it could be actively suppressing his powers. When El finds it, she will see the red smoke, the traumatic memories, but the eye of the storm will not be a location, like Brimborn Steelworks in Billy’s mind. I’m not sure what it would be exactly, but I think it is a perfect opportunity to draw another parallel with this scene!

The key of this part is that El’s interaction with the Demogorgon was the catalyst for the gate opening. So I think that El interacting with whatever exists inside Will will be a catalyst for Will having his Vecna moment. Suddenly he is thrust into his own worst memories, rises from the ground like Max did, is literally suffocated by his own trauma until something breaks. Not his bones, but whatever is suppressing his powers. Remember that focusing on a memory that makes someone angry and sad is what strengthened the power and control of 001 and El? I think that Will’s powers are tangled up in all that mess and El disturbing that releases Will’s powers. Just like her disturbing the Demogorgon created a path between the Upside Down and Hawkins.

A testament to Samantha LaRusso's heart (1/?)

Cobra Kai - S05E08 and S05E09

This moment starts with a distressed Samantha LaRusso, who just saw her chance of rekindling her relationship with her boyfriend destroyed. It is in this emotionally charged headspace that Tory approaches the girl she had harassed for a very long time.

It is important to be highlighted that Tory had no ill intention anymore, we as the audience know it, but Sam does not. Sam had seen nothing to support that, except the quick moment of concern during the end of the All Valley. To Sam, in this second, Tory is still someone who wants to hurt her and part of the group [Cobra Kai] who had been hurting her friends and family.

Naturally, her reaction upon seeing this girl is a clear answer to trauma. Because she immediately rises her fists.

Sam's fear is palpable, she staggers and gets ready to fight because that's what Tory's attitude towards her had taught her to do. To be on her toes. To be ready to defend herself because an attack was coming.

Sam wasn't being bitchy or evil for assuming that stance, she was being instinctive and reacting to pain.

In that moment of turmoil, heartbroken, and mind reeling because her main Cobra Kai enemy showed up unannounced. Tory reveals that the thing that had fueled the pain her family and friends have been suffering was a lie all along.

Cobra Kai's rise in power was based on a lie. Silver's dominium was based on a lie. Her father's assault was supported by a lie. Her parent's marriage crisis was based on a lie. It wasn't Tory's lie, but once again Tory had been complacent in it. To Sam, this is too much to accept, too much to forgive.

Tory had not chosen complacency out of the evilness of her heart, but again, only the audience knows that. Sam could not have reacted any other way. She had no reason to.

But it doesn't take long for it to change.

Miguel gives Sam a push to use her virtuousness to see past her own suffering and her own anger. Sam is capable of doing that rather quickly, proving her natural goodwill when presented in a proper context. For the first time, Sam has a little bit of information that we the audience already had for seasons.

It only took a small thing for her to choose to give the image of her nightmares the chance to come clean. Her heart was soft enough to allow it.

It takes undeniable inner strength and courage from this character to come to this point. We didn't get to see Samantha debating with herself over what Miguel said. We didn't get to see how she justified all of that to herself. But we got proof that it happened because she showed up. Miguel's words triggered her heart, it permitted her to challenge the very strong concepts she had about Tory -- and even with all that proof that Tory was unworthy of trust, Sam saw beyond herself. Tory had been evil to her, but Tory was much more than just her villain. Samantha couldn't have made the choice to listen to her if she also didn't detach that image from the blonde, and changed the point of view to a more mature approach.

I find it cheap and uninteresting -- even unfair --, that we are not being shown the step-by-step process of healing from these two. All we have are proof that these steps are happening. And I wanted to bring some light to Samantha LaRusso's good heart because the signs of it are always ignored by most of the audience.

Sam had not even a quarter of what the audience had to change her heart about Tory, but even with way less than us, and a history of trauma, she still made the noble choice.

if you're someone who goes out to eat occasionally, try to make it a habit to remember to pray for the staff, by name if you can for the ones you know and for all the others you don't. a lot of the time service workers are kids, and even when they're not, they're doing a hard and often thankless job, so much that almost nobody thinks of them unless they screw something up. but they deserve to be treated like human beings and respected for their work. (and given a radical overhaul of the system that lessens the pressure on them and demands their protection, but that's another rant shhhh.)

Not to be better at manipulating people but a lot of his villains are just extraordinarily mentally ill. I think he realized that and one day sat down and realized that sometimes the best way to help them is to understand them so he took a basic psych course and bought a bunch textbooks.
