2023 Reads: Ellen Outside The Lines by A.J. Sass!

Genre: Fiction: Contemporary Age level: Middle grade Format: Novel

Summary: Follows thirteen-year-old Ellen, who's determined to use a school trip to Barcelona as a means to repair her and her best friend's now-distant friendship. As the story continues and things veer off her planned path, Ellen has a very unique coming-of-age as an autistic teenager during a time where everything is changing. 

Thoughts: This is honestly such a sweet book!! Ellen is probably the best autistic rep I've read in a middle grade book so far; she's a very well-rounded, believable character, and her struggles were portrayed in a very heartfelt way. She's also very explicitly Jewish!! Like it's actually a pretty important part of her character imo, which is super neat. There are plenty of queer characters(including Ellen herself) and I really enjoyed how the conflict between her and her best friend was handled. I think the whole cast was just very solid.

I could honestly go on about this book forever haha- but I 100% recommend it, even if you don't usually read middle grade. Every time I read a good middle grade I'm filled with hope for the future. The only other thing I've read from Sass was his short story in "This is Our Rainbow", but I have their recent release book they co-wrote with Nicole Melleby on my shelf right now, and I feel semi-confident recommending his other work too.

My rating: 5/5! Trigger warnings: Ableism, forced outing, challenged transphobia. Representation: Jewish MC + SCs, gay SC, ADHD SC, Non-binary + queer SC, queer + gender questioning MC.

Plot twist: demigods not being able to use ADHD meds because of whatever reason, I can't remember (monsters were secretly making them or something?? Or do ADHD meds just not exist in PJO canon, like I do not recall them ever being brought up 😂), was actually the result of some Apollo child who got really into the natural health movement and started preaching to other demigods about not taking vaccines or pharmaceuticals and really pressed the idea of herbalist medicine, and since some of demigod healing magic DOES include using different "natural" ingredients (natural to them, maybe, but not always to us regular ol' mortals) it caught on like wildfire, and, now, if any kid shows up to camp on ADHD meds, they're immediately razed for trying inhibit their natural survival instincts.

meanwhile this poor kid is just "um, I did not get the hyperactive ADHD, I got the inattentive one and before I started taking these pills I would legit almost get hit by cars all the time because I'd straight up cross roads without looking, so please gimme my meds, I will not be able to learn how to fight without them because I will 100% get distracted by my own internal monologue and zone out completely from what you're saying, and also my ability to process information is severely delayed so if a monster starts trying to kill me, it will definitely get a few good whacks in before I understand what's happening, unless I take my frigging meds"

But PINTO— I love Pinto much. I miss him so. In The Curious Penguin we got a very mild glimpse into an internal struggle Pinto has with himself: He has trouble focusing, is fully aware of it, and even implied he's a bit insecure about it. I want to see more of that struggle, and have Peso be the one to tell him it's okay to think differently. I think it would be GREAT for the kids with ADHD watching the show <3

Ink: doesn’t understand social cues , definitely has Alexithymia, wears loose baggy clothes and can’t wear shoes cause of sensory issues, struggles with expressing emotions to the correct scenarios, probably struggles with lower empathy, he hyperfixates and probably stims, headcannon he can fall into negative stimming like self biting and picking when he’s overwhelmed, and like any good autistic rep is demonized/infantilized to hell and back by the fandom (side note he definitely has adhd)

Error: his sensory issues are wild especially with his fear of touch, if he could have headphones he would wear them 24/7, I head cannon him struggling with AFRID with his safe foods being chocolate, he probably goes non vocal when overstimulated, he litrally blue screens which I interpret as sometimes a autistic shut down, he definitely struggles with socialization and instead of getting into social situations safely re-enacts them with his puppets, he has hyperfixations like on undernovela, has a overwhelming feeling of things not being *right* and needing it to be *right*, also wears loose baggy clothes he can stim with. ratio is big on physical touch but aven needed some time to get used to it and he was very big on it

aven really likes spoiling the absolute shit out of ratio and likes getting him gifts because sometimes he doesn't know how to word how much he appreciates ratio

aven likes to wash ratios hair for him and visa versa, non sexual intimacy always fucking wins

I've already talked about the inherent queerness of Zim and mentioned a few times that there’s a big overlap with autism/neurodiversity but I thought this would make a handy reference. Note that “neurodiversity” isn’t just autism/ADD/ADHD but also includes mental illness, personality disorders, mood disorders, learning disabilities, and anything else that isn’t “neurotypical”.

On the queer side there is actual canon queer rep in the show and comics:

Irkens are canonically aroace and intersex.

Groyna from the comics was confirmed by Eric Trueheart to be a lesbian.

Commander Poki from the comics may be trans, as she has eyelashes normally only seen on female Irkens, but lacks the curled antenna every other female Irken is shown to possess.

Recap Kid's gender is deliberately ambiguous.

There are also many instances of queer-coding that can be seen throughout the show such as:

The homoerotic rivalry between Zim and Dib.

Red and Purple basically being Zim's two gay dads.

Zim and several other characters having campy and dramatic mannerisms.

Could you do something with a farmer that has POTs and Ehlers Danlos? (..Maybe a dash of ADHD too..). I have many SDV loves, this can be romantic, platonic, or a bit about the community being supportive as a whole. For characters Sam, Elliot, and Haley are my usual top three for friendships. I also love the idea of George realizing he’s not alone and maybe a disability isn’t so bad:) I have such a soft spot for him.

I cannot scroll 5 seconds on tiktok without getting horrendous mischaracterization of the school bus graveyard girls and oh my lord it's making me so unnecessarily mad (I have an ashlyn special interest, fucking sue me)

ASHLYN. IS NOT. JUST AIDENS LOVE INTEREST. TAYLOR. IS NOT. JUST TYLERS SISTER. Ashlyn in particular makes me mad because Aiden is the ONLY thing the fandom focuses on with her. Red herself has confirmed that she doesn't even know if Aiden loves Ashlyn romantically yet that is ALL her character is to the fandom. Can we talk about how she has been implied to be suicidal to some extent (not spoiling fastpass)? Maybe her fucking autism rep? Maybe talk about the bonds that she has with other characters? Like Logan?

This happens in like every fandom but it is PAINFUL to see women get degraded to just side characters of the men around them. I am saying this as a fucking DUDE too.

If I'm being so fucking honest, Aiden is overrated. Sometimes SBG fandom forgets the other characters exist and it's annoying!! Idc if this is woke bullshit I will forever hate Aiden and Ashlyn as a ship because Ashlyn gets her character watered down so much. The day someone writes Aidelyn like an actual relationship and not "Haha chaotic adhd boy gets silly! ..and ashlyns there ig" is the day I will live in peace!!

- i read 19 books - i attempted one buddy read (but my wife quit on me, guys) - 100% OF MY BOOKS WERE QUEER - still no audiobooks but there's a freshly peeled month ahead of us

here's the reviews:

the bad: - Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur, bisexual rep people in the circles i've been traveling lately love this book, but i just... didn't. the characters did a complete personality switch about three chapters in. one of them was a manic pixie dream girl. the other was so flat i dreaded reading her perspective. also the brother had NO boundaries and i hate third act breakups due to miscommunication. 1 star - Something Wild and Wonderful by Anita Kelly, achillean rep people also loved this one but my struggle is that i don't think gay men are it for me and also there were some things about Alexie that i just didn't jive with. there was, yet again, another third act breakup that felt contrived. the writing was good and it was clear Kelly knows hiking and they have a love for it. so i enjoyed that part! 2.5 stars - The Prospects by K.T. Hoffman, trans achillean rep everyone and their freaking mother LOVE this book but it just didn't have enough baseball. like, for a book about the first trans baseball player in the professional league, this book was about his love interest's anxiety. gimme baseball!!! and gene straight-up backstabbed luis, i stg if no one else thinks so. 2.5 stars

the great: - The Skin and Its Girl by Sarah Cypher, lesbian rep this is lit-fic and you should know that going into it. once i got used to the writing style, i was hooked on this book. it's an interesting POV and the love story is really the complex love between a daughter and her mother, and the daughter and get great-aunt. like, my brain is still bending around this one. 5 stars - The Z Word by Lindsay King-Miller, queer rep this book emerged from a tumblr prompt and it's incredible. tons of rep (sword lesbian, motorcycle lesbian, drag queen, bisexual mess, nonbinary pizza delivery person) and just a fun fucking time. it's all centered around Pride weekend and begs the question: just what do you do when a zombie outbreak fucks up your festival? 5 stars - Here We Go Again by Alison Cochrun, lesbian rep two teachers go on a road trip with their terminally ill mentor and gosh, this is a specific setup but it works. i cried at the end like a little baby. the characters were fantastic (my favorite was their mentor) and the writing was superb. there's also really great ADHD rep in this and the growth of each character felt natural instead of forced. 5 stars - The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas, trans rep i knew this book existed and my cousin loves it but i never gave it a fair shake because i was like ONLY SAPPHIC NOVELS ONLY SAPPHIC NOVELS and was averse to reading anything but that but this one. this one is so good. the setting (a contemporary-fantasy latin america) is so lush and rich with detail. teo, the main character, had me rooting for him from the get-go. and the plot twist was so so good. i requested an advanced copy of the sequel through NetGalley and i'm hoping it'll come there. (i also bought Thomas' other novel, because now he is auto-buy author me) 5 stars.

honorable mentions: - A Swift and Sudden Exit by Nico Vincenty, bisexual rep also born from a tumblr prompt and just so much fun. i recommend purchasing this because it's just too good. time traveler meets and immortal (maybe you've seen the prompt). you won't regret it - Elatsoe by Darcy Little Badger, asexual rep an Indigenous girl who can see ghosts goes on a trip to hunt down her cousin's murderer. the writing is so punchy. i loved this one. - On the Same Page by Haley Cass, bisexual rep best friends become lovers through miscommunication. hilarious stuff. i will also read Haley Cass again because the characters were so funny and the plot was so good. - Lakelore by Anna-Marie McLemore, nonbinary rep this one was a mind bender in a good way. each of the characters were really fleshed out in a fun way. the timeline hopping was a little trippy, but i got my feet under me quick. - A Sweet Sting of Salt by Rose Sutherland, lesbian rep a selkie wife retelling. do i really need to say more?

I like that Maxwell includes his adhd in the character of MJF, for his background but also for his reasoning, cause for so long has the ugly side of my neurodivergence make me relate to the insecure selfish choices of heels. I always felt stupid though for reading characters through such a lense, “its not that deep” etc etc, and now we have someone who openly talks about how fucked up RSD can make you feel.

“but isn’t that bad rep? / Are you using your disability to excuse shitty behaviour??” – Knowing that you aren’t alone with these negative symptoms can be so relieving. I’m all for more people knowing about the kinda shit we go through in our heads, also understanding bad behaviour doesn’t mean condoning.

Okay so I know most people have Ana being this calm, quiet but orderly girl. Which is cool and probably the most accurate to the game!

But as someone who’s grown up in the same way as her somewhat (ei, being Christian and working within the church at a young age) my representation of Ana ends up differently. Which is why I used a trope that I love that also fits with some problems within the Christian community.

Have you ever heard of: “Don’t worry, just pray to god and he’ll deal with every problem you have”? Yep, that’s my least favorite thing to hear and also ties with the community’s most overlooked issue and the media’s most favorite trope: Toxic positivity!

Ana is sorta like Unikitty and Star from SVTFOE in a way, she was raised to not focus on the bad stuff and focus on the good with god by her side. (Which helped a lot in the adventure as my rep of Ninten was a grumpy puss and Lloyd was a debbie downer with his facts and evidence type) and she was super enthusiastic and encouraged them a lot.

(In fact, I headcanon her with ADHD, always here to help but she doesn’t know really when to sit still by herself.)

But if also costs her mind in the long run, seeing all those kids in Youngtown really broke something in her that made her show more emotions than happiness or awkwardness, sadness. The adventure teaches her that while looking on the bright side is a great way of thinking, there’s times where your expectations can be crushed and that it’s okay to show emotions other than happiness. That’s not to say she’s a pushover, she can be mean if needed (but will apologize for it later). She’s an absolute sweetheart and a girly girl! She helps others with their confidence and always wishes the best for everyone. Even if you hate her guts, she’ll be more happy to help you in need.

But sadly not many kids around Snowman choose to be friends with her, acquaintances but never friends. Some have their reasons for this but most believe that they can’t compare to Ana’s positivity or charming intentions that most of the adults in the community praises her for, creating a bridge between most kids and her. The psychic powers thing REALLY doesn’t help but most people try to forget that. Her father enforces this positivity whenever she’s feeling sad or upset (usually it’s sometimes after school that she’ll feel this way) by saying, “Don’t worry, god will be there for you. Think of him as…a best friend! Your personal best friend!”

Ana really didn’t think there were other types of boys other than the ones in her town (who act towards her like gentlemen and quiet kids), until Ninten and Lloyd arrive that is.

One difference between Harry Potter and Percy Jackson (the characters) is that Harry marvels at every new instance of magic. But after Percy learns about the magic system, he just stops giving a shit. Once he learns that magic is real, he is surprised by absolutely nothing and does not question the irrelevant stuff, like Annabeth's invisibility hat, or how the fuck a ballpoint pen can turn into a sword.

Percy is such a sassy, sarcastic little shit and I love him so fucking much.

I lost power for most to the day today, so I sat at a coffee shop and just killed time writing down headcanons for every SP character I could think of.

there's alot of them, but hopefully somebody out there finds these fun

Butters

Gender fluid / non-conforming

Saved up enough to move into dorms away from their parents

Got fed up in senior year and spiked Cartman's drink w/ laxatives and locked him outside at a house party
