(Too terrified to ask this on my blog, so anon it is 😂)
This may be a dumb question, or one that's hard to answer, but do you have any advice for writing long pieces of work without dragging on? The longest fic I've ever written is 4k. I feel like, if I try to write something long, I over explain stupid things like how they positioned their legs when they climbed over a fence and stuff like that. You're writing is so clear, and it's never dragging on or over-explaining, yet it's really long. So yeah, I'm just asking if you've got any tips on that.
well, I think number one it’s important to remember that no length is key! Just because a fic is “long,” doesn’t mean it’s telling a story well. plenty of fantastic stories can be told in 4k or less :)
but I think that most of the length in my writing is coming from emphasis on internal monologue / character building and repetition hehe
a lot of my writing is a character reflecting on how they feel about what’s happening and how that’s informing actions taking place around them.
When I write, I sort of follow the format of “action tag, internal monologue, description, reflection on what’s happened thus far in the story to remind readers what’s happening and also to inform future character decisions based on past ones, and finally, some rhetorical questions for emphasis.”
I also try to make that sort of dispersed when writing so it doesn’t read like I’m going off a Format.
I don’t know if this is actually going to make any sense to anyone but me lmfao but I tried to color coordinate the format im talking about w/ two scenes. One from my long fic Scene 14 and one from my fic Fine Print
pink = dialogue
orange = action currently happening
green = flowery cushion shit that establishes sense of character and conflict
yellow = references to previous points in the fic that inform the characters current decisions / thoughts
blue = questions 💙
Theoretically, you should be able to see how these things are dispersed throughout so it doesn’t make it feel like it’s being “over explained” or too wordy or dragging on, like you said! I try to never spend too much time on one thing.
I used to over write like crazy (and people could tell yikes) because I spent too much time on one thing, and I also repeated shit like crazy. So my best advice to you is to just try to play around !! Mix and match action with dialogue and setting description and internal monologue !! Don’t stay on one boat too long!
and remember that each line in your story should inform the next!
I know I said I was going to sleep but I HAD to answer this gkdksksks
So I already answered number 2, which I'll be linking it here
17. How well do they communicate? Are they open with their feelings/thoughts or more reserved? Why?
I'm pretty sure I don't have to go in too deep with Shady cuz....I mean just look at him, but I will anyway
He's very much so reserved, no Duh, he isn't the type to easily open up, very distant and almost cold, but he isn't against the idea of opening up more, that is especially true once Mitsuami showed up.
But it didn't mean it was easy, it still isn't, he doesn't open up about a lot and Mitsuami made it her mission to pick up the non verbal signs of anything to help him out if he's struggling, it just isn't his thing, he likes his space, he's used to it by now, he chose this life in a way.
Mitsuami is a lot more open and communicates a lot more of her frustrations, not hesitating to lean in a friend if she needs to, or in this case, her boyfriend. If she had a bad day she'd immediately tell Shady about it and he'd listen
I think despite Shady's silancd, they communicate pretty well, partially because of Mitsuami's openess and she'd immediately tell him when something is bothering her.
I struggle a little with making Mitsuami's personality, because she seems to be very bold and open, very extroverted, but then there is her shyness to turf, I think it's like stage fright though, you can be a very extroverted person, but put you in a sea of audience and you'll freeze up, so i think Mitsuami's a very bold person when it comes to personal relationships, showing to be quite trusting of her friends so id assume the same for her boyfriend lol
24. How do their personalities affect their relationship? Do their characteristics compliment each other, or clash often?
Hmmm this one's been hinting at in a lot of the replies so far
But their personalities kinda balances things out a lot? The one that talks and the one that listens basically, that's how their dynamic works
But I do think it also kind of clashes a lot? Mostly on the physical aspect. While shady is touch avoidant, Mitsuami is touched starved, so there has been a bit of friction in their relationship over that.
But that aside, they fit in like a puzzle piece almost XD, opposite attracts after all, Mitsuami is an energetic girl and Shady a silent, distant guy, there isn't too much into that fjdjsjsak
Idk I probably shouldn't be typing this at 12:22am, but who's gonna stop me? I don't have school tomorrow, so no one hehehehe
Anyways, thanks again for letting me ramble about them again! :D
so.. he doesn’t actually have a normal heartrate! he has one, but its just unreasonably slow actually. last time it beat was sometime during the archon war and it spoked the shit out of them
"Are you sure about this?" Emannuel shivered, John did not seem as bothered by the cold. He stared down into the inky black hole in the ice, ran his finger along the rope tied tight around his waist. It was so much easier when the brotherhood was around. The mortality rate on something like this was negligable, only around five or six of them died a year, they really had it down to a fine art -- still, no wonder there were only three of them left in the US.
"Sure as I'll ever be," John said, through grit teeth. Fact was, he wasn't particularly fond of the situation. He'd only ever done this once before. To summon death was to risk him taking you away, but to die, and be revived, well, the power remains in your hands -- or at least, it's supposed to be in the hands of a trusted confidanté. Emmanuel was a fine man, but did John trust him with his life? No. He did not.
He instructed his hired hand to wait thirty minutes, handed him his pocket watch, and reminded him of the payment awaiting him, should John survive.
He meditated the half hour away, and as the second hand hit 30, Emmanuel pushed John into the hole. If you don't feel the cold, you know you've done it right.
His feet hit the ground. He was dripping, but he was inside, in a place he recognized from his childhood, or perhaps a dream. He could hear his mother, screaming, down the hall -- he ignored it, and walked the opposite direction. You must resist the pain the world tempts you with, you must not wallow on your life in the moments between. You have to remember why you're here.
The sky had shown colours he didn't know exists; sparks and flames and radiation and carcinogens, what he pulled from the wreckage was no demon, was no angel, and no matter how much the being craved it, it could not die.
He had drank beers with the creature, as it explained it's predicament. Told him that they did not die as we did -- they did not pass on, but they could use the death of the flesh to catapult themselves to another place, another time.
So he lifted his rifle, they were about twenty yards away from each other. "You ready?" John yelled.
"Yup," the creature gave a thumbs up, John shot him in the chest. When the dust subsided, John tipped his head to the side, curiosity. The being stood up, cursing like a sailor.
"Is--- gugugu," water spilled out his mouth, his yells echoing around empty corridors. "Is anybody here?"
noticed a dip in posts about palestine on my dash, so i think it deserves to be said again: palestine is not a trend. caring about genocide is not a trend. there are still reports about humanitarian aid trucks intentionally blocked off from gaza, meaning so many fucking gazans, a big portion of them children, are just bleeding out with no help. it just came out recently that israelis disguised as women and medics infiltrated a west bank hospital, at which point they killed 3 palestinians (whom they claim were militants. right). these people are living day to day without even the most basic utilities. anyone who claims to have “activism fatigue” needs to question why they’re so severely lacking in the most basic forms of compassion. you don’t get to just grow bored of talking about palestine. please never stop calling attention to the genocide happening full force in front of us.
being aromantic is like. hey btw you're going to live a life that is the culmination of most of society's worst nightmares. sorry lol ✌️ but then you turn around and take a really good hard look at it and it turns out that living in that nightmare is fucking awesome and you get to wake up every day and take that fear that other people have and laugh and hold it close until it's a great joy for you instead. and being happy is a radical act that you define instead of someone else. and you're sexy as fuck that's just a fact of life i don't make the rules on that one
