GENDER REVEAL (MODERN AU)
(All characters are aged up)
Pt. 2 of "them finding out that you are pregnant "
Sokka gripped your hand tightly in the waiting room. Today was the day - you two would find out the gender of their baby. Part of him wanted a daughter, so he could protect and spoil his little princess. of course he would be happy with son too ,But As long as the baby was healthy, he didn't really care either way. When the nurse called your name, he helped you onto the exam table and sat beside you, not letting go of your hand.
"Looks like everything's developing nicely," the doctor said with a smile. "Would you two like to know the gender?" you looked at Sokka with shining eyes and he nodded eagerly. The doctor moved the wand around for a moment." Ah, it's quite clear. Congratulations, you're having a girl!" . A daughter. Sokka felt his eyes well up as a watery laugh escaped. He hugged you tightly, kissing your forehead over and over. "We're having a baby girl," he said in awe.
Sokka couldn't wait to love and protect his princess with his whole heart.
Zuko strides down the hospital corridor, one arm wrapped protectively around your shoulders as you walk to the doctor's office. He's not usually one for public displays of intimacy, but his guard is lowered in private moments with the two people who mean everything to him. Pausing outside the closed door, he gazes down at you tenderly, one hand moving to gently cradle your growing belly. "You feelin' okay, Love?" he asks softly, At your nod, he presses a gentle kiss to your forehead before knocking. The doctor greets you both warmly, gesturing to sit as she reviews your notes. "Everything is progressing perfectly. Are you ready to find out what you're having?" At your eager nods, she squeezes gel over your stomach, moving the probe expertly. Zuko watches the screen intently, squeezing your hand as shapes come into focus. The doctor points. "Well congratulations... it looks like you're having a baby girl."
Zuko's breath hitches, eyes glistening with pride, love and wonder. Gazing down at you, he cradles your cheek tenderly. "A little princess... just like her mama," he murmurs, voice thick with emotion. Leaning down to kiss you deeply and sweetly.
Mako holds your hand gently yet tightly in his own as you both await the ultrasound results in the examination room. His mind still reels from the revelation a few months ago that not one but two little lives now grew within you. Twins. The doctor returns with a cheerful smile, settling in to study the sonogram monitor. "Alright Mom and Dad, let's see if we can get a glimpse of Baby A and Baby B..." Mako watches intently, fascinated by the shapes taking form on the screen. As the doctor points out key features, his smile only grows. Two heartbeats. Finally, the doctor pauses, smile broadening. "Well congratulations, it looks like you've got one of each! Your little boy and girl are healthy and developing perfectly on schedule."
Mako's breath catches in wonder, unable to look away from those tiny fluttering lives they created through their love. he meet your eyes, "A son and daughter, princess," he rumbles gratefully, pressing kiss to your forehead. "We did good, didn't we?" he winks.
Aang sat nervously beside you in the doctor's office, hand intertwined with yours. Finally the doctor called them back, smiling warmly. "Are you ready to find out what you're having?". you beamed up at Aang, unable to contain your joy. He nodded enthusiastically, returning your smile through eyes glistening with happy tears. This was really happening. The cool gel was spread as the ultrasound transducer swept smoothly over User's swollen belly. Your eyes were glued raptly to the screen, holding their breath. "Well congratulations, Mom and Dad - it looks like you're having a baby boy!" The doctor announced with a grin.
A sob burst from Aang. he pulled you into a fierce hug, covering your face in kisses, happy tears streaming down both your cheeks. A son. you were having a son. Gently placing a hand on your belly, Aang bent low to address your son. "I can't wait to meet you little man. Daddy loves you so much already."
Oh, Princess, I can't believe we're going to find out the gender of our baby today. I've been counting down the days for this moment. Bolin is practically bouncing with excitement as the two of you step into the doctor's office, holding hands tightly. As you both settle into the examination room, Bolin sits beside you, his leg bouncing up and down with nervous energy. The doctor begins the ultrasound, and Bolin's focus shifts to the screen, his breath catching in his throat. "Oh, Princess , I can't wait to see our little one," he whispers, his voice filled with awe. As the image starts to come into view, Bolin's eyes widen, his lips forming a smile. "Look, look! That's our baby, Princess. Our precious little miracle." As the doctor announces the gender, Bolin's face lights up with pure joy. he pauses for a moment, his excitement building, "it's a boy! We're having a little prince!"
Bolin can barely contain his excitement as he leans in to place a gentle kiss on your cheek. He wraps his arms around you, pulling you into a tight embrace,"I love you, And I love our little prince. We're going to have the most amazing family. I can't wait to shower him with all the love and affection in the world."

Just in case: CW for some street harassment and arguing
•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
When the war ended, Sokka kissed Zuko on the cheek.
A quick peck, occurring amidst the celebration being held in Caldera. The city was alive and bright, and they were in the palace courtyard, laughing and dancing to loud music and finally letting the joy of it all wash over them.
Zuko was with his friends, who were shouting jubilantly over the noise and hugging and doing things friends do—things Zuko wasn’t aware friends did until recently. And Sokka was there, right next to Zuko, and suddenly, among a particularly loud bust of laughter form the group he grinned and pressed his lips quickly but firmly against the unscarred side of Zuko’s face.
Zuko blinked rapidly, frozen for just a second, before shaking himself out of his daze and looking over to Sokka in search of an answer to the unspoken question. Why in Agni’s name did you do that?
Sokka didn’t even notice Zuko’s gaze. Instead, he continued laughing, his cheeks rosy, certainly a little drunk (which he was probably a bit too young for, but Zuko didn’t call him out on it). He looked genuinely at ease, perhaps for the first time since… spirits, since when?
Zuko decided that his question could wait.
•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
The day before Sokka set off for the Southern Water Tribe, Zuko leaned against a balcony railing with him, taking in the view of the capital’s bustling morning rush.
“Sokka.”
“Hm?”
Zuko felt a little nagging in his gut, oh-so-curious. “I wanted to ask you about something. About the night of the party.”
“Sure, man,” Sokka said, his faux nonchalance terribly executed. “Shoot.”
“Uh,” Zuko said, only a bit stilted, “why’d you kiss my cheek?”
Sokka, though visibly uncomfortable, seemed to understand that not answering would be weirder than any answer he could give.
“Right.” Sokka curved his back a little, standing more upright against the rail. “Look, I’m sorry if that was weird or if it made you, y’know-”
“No! I mean, it’s fine. Really. I just wanted to know.”
A short moment swept over them before Sokka nodded. “Well...” his gaze drifted back to the city. “I’ve lived my entire life in this war. Everything has always been about the war. And...” he thought for a moment, “I don’t think I ever really realized what a big weight that was until it was lifted.”
Zuko waited in silence, a nonverbal nudge at Sokka to continue.
“And even when we defeated Ozai, it really hadn’t sunk in yet. It was over. Like, actually over. And that party was when it really hit me and I realized I was free for the first time ever. And I was so happy, and I just—” he offered a grin that was already faltering as it manifested, “I had to kiss someone. A friend. Y’know? I just needed that. So there.”
There was a short silence, which Zuko broke with a small, “Yeah. That makes sense.”
Sokka visibly relaxed. “So, you’re not mad?”
“No, Sokka,” Zuko said with a short, breathy laugh, “of course I’m not mad.”
Sokka nodded. “Good.” A moment. “And, y’know, I think kissing your friends on the cheek is a good thing.”
Zuko wasn’t sure how to respond to that, so he just nodded.
•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
The next time they saw one another, Zuko was wearing all sorts of furs and fabrics to protect him from the unforgiving climate of the South Pole.
“Zuko!” Sokka shouted, and woah, was his voice deeper? Or was Zuko imagining it? Had it only been nine months since he’d seen him last?
“Hello,” Zuko greeted rather formally, smiling a little. “Thank you for the invite to stay for a while. I appreciate it.”
Sokka rolled his eyes fondly. “Come on, Zuko. Don’t tell me you’ve gotten all snobby from your time with all those boring old dudes.”
Not expecting a jab so promptly, Zuko laughed. “It’s good to see you, Sokka.”
“Good to see you too, pal,” Sokka smiled, draping an arm over Zuko’s shoulder and guiding him along, away from the port. “Come on, I’ve got a lot to show you.”
When he said a lot, he really meant a lot, Zuko realized; there was so much going on everywhere they went. Members of the sister tribe from the North were assisting in rebuilding efforts, new structures towering high. There were diplomats consulting and children chasing one another through the snow. Sokka explained everything in excruciating detail.
By the time evening was upon them, Zuko was dead tired, freezing, and wondering how Sokka had grown up in this unbearable weather.
“C’mon, I’ll show you where we put your bags earlier,” Sokka offered, leading Zuko to a smaller structure on the east side of the village.
Upon entrance, Zuko took note of the animal skins neatly organized around the room, the lantern by the bed roll, and the warm glow of the fire leaking out against the snow.
Somehow, even in the cold, Zuko could see the comfort of it.
“I’ll let you get settled in. I should head off before your guards check to see if I’ve killed you,” Sokka joked, grinning stupidly.
Zuko, standing beside him tiredly, nodded. “Will you show me around some more tomorrow?”
“First thing in the morning, buddy.”
Zuko yawned before he could respond, so he offered yet another nod before saying, “Goodnight, Sokka.”
Sokka smiled wider, took Zuko’s hand in his, and pressed an over dramatic kiss to his knuckles. “Goodnight, my leige.” He laughed and dropped Zuko’s hand, patting him on the shoulder before turning to go to wherever it was he slept.
He didn’t even seem to notice that he left Zuko standing in the snow, holding his own hand, frozen solid but warm all over.
•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
(Zuko held that hand to his chest that night, wondering why it was that he felt so tingly all over every time his fingertips bushed over where Sokka had kissed his knuckles.)
•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
There was another kiss, two years later, when they were out in the markets of Caldera, dressed in common clothes this time. Zuko had a hood draped over his head, obscuring his distinct face and his unmistakable scar, whereas Sokka wore casual robes and kept the rest of his appearance the same, wolf tail and all.
This had been the most difficult visit of Sokka’s to the Fire Nation. Most difficult for Zuko, that is. Because not even a month prior to the Water Tribesman’s arrival at the sunny port of the Capital, Zuko had finally pieced together the puzzle that his emotions were. Why he felt warm whenever Sokka’s hand was on his shoulder. Why he found it unnecessarily and progressively more difficult to breath or form sentences around him. Why he had the urge to ask for Sokka to hug him, hold him, whenever he was stressed or tired or feeling less than ideal (which was often).
Apparently, he’d been the last one in the entire fucking palace to figure it out.
And now, now, Sokka was here. Again. But it was different this time. Because Zuko understood himself. And he didn’t know how to cope with-
“Lee? Buddy? You there?”
Zuko blinked rapidly and looked over at Sokka, glowing-in-the-sun Sokka, who was rolling a coin between his fingers.
He appreciated Sokka using his fake name in public settings, but it did make it harder for him to recognize when Sokka was talking to him, and it wasn’t nearly as pleasant as hearing his real name roll off of Sokka’s tongue like it was delicate and beautiful and easy.
“Yes. Hi. Sorry.” Zuko nodded curtly, turning his attention to the trinkets on the table in front of him and pretending to take an interest in them.
“You seem out of it, are you feeling okay?”
“Yes. I’m good. I feel good, thank you.”
Sokka’s face still maintained a look of distant skepticism, but he eventually shrugged and kept looking around.
Zuko, trying now to keep his mind off the disguised palace guards he knew were lurking a few meters back, let Sokka wander the shops. It was best if he wasn’t close by, anyway. Kept Zuko from acting stupid.
Ten minutes into trying not to think about any of the things he was thinking about, Zuko spotted Sokka across the road, backing up, a perplexed look etched into his features. There was someone across from him, leaning in just a bit too close.
He began striding across the street.
“I told you, I’m sorry, but I’m not interested.”
“Please?” a voice begged, a twinge of flirtatious charm present. “You will not regret it. I promise!”
“I’m seeing someone,” Sokka responded firmly, tiredly.
Zuko knew that wasn’t true. Sokka and Suki had broken up a few months ago. Sokka was “taking some time for himself”, as he put it.
“Listen,” the voice, which belonged to a young man with intricately braided hair and sharp eyes, said, “I’m just suggesting-”
“There he is!” Sokka shouted suddenly, mostly at the man, shooting a glance at Zuko and telling him something with his eyes (something Zuko didn’t quite grasp just yet). “Lee, baby.”
Baby? Well, Zuko didn’t mind Sokka referring to him like that, certainly. But-
“Like I said,” Sokka continued, eyes glaring at the man as he draped an arm around Zuko and pulled him into his side, “I’m taken.”
The man’s face was dubious.
Fuck. Zuko had to play along for this to work.
“He’s not... he’s not available,” Zuko confirmed, his tone a bit awkward but hopefully convincing enough. He took extra care to make his scarred side as unnoticeable as it could be.
The man’s face was endowed with a nasty look. “I’m not a moron.”
Something overcame Zuko, a sudden rush of courage. In an instant, he looked at Sokka, saying something with his own eyes this time that Sokka seemed to register in a split second.
Zuko pressed his lips to Sokka’s, who met him in the middle.
Zuko froze. Then unfroze. Look natural. Then he froze again. Agni. He was kissing Sokka.
After what felt far too short but was probably just the opposite, Sokka pulled away, glared at the stranger, and gripped Zuko’s hand tightly. “Got it?”
The man scowled but turned and stomped off. Sokka led Zuko away.
“Sorry about that,” Sokka said, face twisted up. “I didn’t wanna make you feel like you had to do… that.”
“No problem,” Zuko said, knowing he sounded painfully awkward and strained. “I didn’t mind. He wouldn’t get off your back, I get it.”
Sokka nodded, offering a smile. “Good.” He looked forward. “Ooh! Earrings!”
And Sokka was off again, thinking about something else already.
Zuko had no such luck. He thought about that kiss for a long time.
•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
The fourth kiss was a year later on Ember Island.
Aang, Katara, Toph, Suki, Sokka, and Zuko had all managed to get away with a two day vacation. Zuko was incredibly resistant, but Iroh had insisted
(“I can’t just up and leave, Uncle, I have a country to run.”
“You worry too much. I’ll handle things until you get back. I won’t start another war, you know.”)
The day activities were fun, obviously. More so than they had ever been with Azula. But the evening was where things began to get interesting. Nighttime brought out a boldness in people, apparently, and before Zuko knew it, Katara was being asked the dreaded question:
“Truth or dare?”
Katara thought for a moment, playing with her hair as she did so. “Truth.”
“Boooooring,” Toph complained, arms crossed in disapproval.
Katara scowled. “It’s my choice! I choose truth.”
Aang grinned at the banter and said, “Okay. If you were a nonbender, what would you do as a job?”
“Seriously, Aang? That’s even more boring,” Toph whined again. “Come up with something interesting.”
“And less offensive,” Sokka half-jokingly pitched in. “Some nonbenders are capable of saving the world, in case you’d forgotten.”
“I second that,” Suki laughed, leaning against Sokka’s shoulder.
“Fine,” Aang said. “Katara, what is your biggest fear?”
“Woah, that’s, like, way personal,” Katara said.
Toph grinned. “Come on, princess. Tell us.”
(She insisted it was molesnakes until everyone gave up trying to get a real answer out of her.)
“Sokka, truth or dare?”
Sokka put on his smile, the one he reserved for looking confident or condescending, and said, “Dare, because I’m not afraid of a little action.”
Toph laughed just a little evilly and leaned back in thought.
“Kiss a person of your choosing. On the lips.”
Sokka rolled his eyes. “Fine. Should’ve expected this coming from you.”
Katara was out of the question (sister) and Aang was, too (incredibly loyal to said sister and essentially Sokka’s brother). Sokka also ruled out Suki (awkward, they were exes) and Toph flat out refused to let it be her.
“Zuko, looks like you’re it. Come here.”
“Me?”
“No, the other Zuko,” Sokka sassed. “Yeah, you. Hurry up.”
Zuko felt his heart rate pick up and then, dreadfully, caught a glimpse of Toph’s knowing smile. Aang, Katara, and Suki were all eagerly awaiting.
Awkwardly, painfully, Zuko scooted over and let Sokka do whatever it was that he needed to do.
The kiss was shorter than the kiss at the market a year prior, but somehow it was the best one yet. Sokka was warm and gentle as he kissed him, a sensation that made Zuko never want to part.
Unfortunately, Sokka leaned back after only a couple of seconds, looking incredibly satisfied with himself. Zuko awkwardly shuffled back to his seat as the rest of the group laughed a little and clapped (Toph offered a whistle, despite not being able to see them at all anyway).
“Alright, Sokka. Your turn to call on someone.”
“Perfect. Aang, truth or dare?”
Zuko’s stomach turned with that familiar sadness; that of knowing that the kiss didn’t mean anything, but spirits, did it make him wish.
Zuko didn’t really pay attention to the rest of the game very well.
•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
“I told you, you didn’t have to step in like that. I can handle myself, you know,” Zuko seethed, voice a harsh whisper just outside the meeting hall.
Sokka stepped back for only a moment before reclaiming his footing and snapping back. “No one said you can’t handle yourself, Zuko, so quit putting words in my mouth. I stepped in because you’re my friend and I help my friends, whether they ‘need it’ or not. Alright?”
“I didn’t fucking ask you to though, did I?”
“Holy shit, Twi and La, you dense- why can’t you just accept my help for what it is? Anyone’s help, for that matter? It seems like every time someone tries to lend a hand, you slap it away!” Sokka was shouting now, earning some glances from a few passing diplomats.
Zuko anxiously glanced over at the spectators, grabbing Sokka’s bicep and dragging him down a hallway where they’d have more privacy.
“I don’t need you to baby me, Sokka. I appreciate that you want to to help, but I’m a fucking adult, in case you’ve forgotten. I’m not some helpless kid. I don’t need protection. And I most certainly don’t need your pity, especially in front of the council.” Zuko’s body was tense, twisted up inside like a million strings pulling on one another in all different directions.
Sokka scoffed in disbelief. “Spirits, fuck, you idiot. Zuko,” Sokka placed a firm hand on Zuko’s shoulder, squeezing almost to the point of discomfort. “I know you’re capable to handle yourself. You’re running a fucking country. I am not pitying you. But I am your friend, and friends help each other because they fucking want to, not because they think the other is helpless. And if you thought even for a second that I was gonna sit there and let General Guo disrespect you like that, then clearly I haven’t made myself clear enough.”
“Made what clear enough?” Zuko fumed, confused and stressed, twisted strings snapping.
“That I care about you, alright? A lot. Fuck, a LOT a lot. Of course I’m gonna say something when someone talks shit about you. Did you seriously think I wouldn’t?”
Sokka still looked angry, but Zuko suddenly felt all rage leave his body in an instant, replaced by a dizzying wonderment. Sokka’s face was pleading, incredulous. Zuko’s insides were warm, fluttering. All that would play in his brain was a repeating chant of Sokka cares about me. Sokka cares about me.
Sokka seemed to notice Zuko’s stupor and his demeanor shifted into something a little less angry and a little more confused, searching.
“Zuko?”
Zuko made eye contact, his words coming out hesitantly. “Thank you for caring about me.”
That seemed to take Sokka by surprise. Said warrior clammed up in an instant, looking terribly unsure of what to say.
Zuko figured he ought to finish his thought. “And I’m sorry. About freaking out.”
Sokka nodded absently, stepping closer, just by a bit. “I forgive you.”
Zuko also drew closer to Sokka without much thought, feeling his insides detangle. Suddenly all he could see was Sokka, all the tapestries and gold detailings of the palace gone. Sokka stared right back at him, inching forward, looking a little unsure but mostly just mirroring Zuko’s own unmistakable want.
It was Zuko who ultimately moved in close, allowing Sokka the option to close the gap between them or back out.
Sokka took the former.
The first thing Zuko thought when their lips met was that Sokka tasted like sesame oil, and the second was Spirits, Sokka’s a good kisser. The third was Oh, he’s kissing me. On purpose.
When they pulled apart after perhaps the five greatest seconds of Zuko’s existence, the first thing Sokka said was, “Also, I don’t think you’re an idiot. And you’re only a little dense.”
Zuko laughed breathlessly, his mind trying to catch up to the present moment. “‘Only a little dense’? What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means that I’ve been dropping hints for at least six months now and you never noticed even one.”
Zuko gaped a little, finding only sincerity and slight amusement on Sokka’s face. “No.”
“Yeah.”
“No!” Zuko dropped his head down in embarrassment. “Ugh, I’ve been in love with you for like three fucking years, are you kidding me?”
“Woah, in love?” Sokka mused, grinning. “I didn’t realize you were so gone on me.”
“Shut the fuck up,” Zuko sighed, pulling Sokka in for another kiss. Sokka blessedly dropped the subject, gratefully accepting.
