Nanami x Reader

Summary: Love was never an option for you. Until you met him.

Content warning: ANGST (Yes, this is about Shibuya) Do not read this if you are already sad or if you’re happy, still don’t read it.

Love only comes for those who are willing to get hurt by it, your mother used to say.

You should’ve known it was a warning.

Life as a sorcerer wasn’t for the average person. The imminent danger, the great possibility of death along with the realization that you had signed up for a life of loneliness. Maybe if you had been born in one of the clans there would’ve been a marriage arranged for you at the cost of self-value as a woman. Even then, the thought of an arranged marriage more than always meant a loveless relationship, a transaction if you will. An heir for status.

With time you had accepted it. You kept relationships superficial, nothing more than a one-night stand or, if they were good enough, you kept them in your rooster of fuck buddies for whenever the stress of the job proved itself too big.

You didn’t want a relationship. You weren’t looking for love. You weren’t looking for your happy ending.

Not until Nanami.

He wasn’t around when you had transferred to Tokyo, the rumors of a fellow student’s death being the reason reaching your ears whenever you asked who Gojo always referred as Nanamin. He had left the sorcerers life to pursue a mundane life, just like your father had done.

After a mission that required at least two first grade sorcerers had put itself on top of the list, Gojo had reached out to him as the school had to face a lack of manpower, leaving you as the only one available. Reluctantly, Nanami had agreed to help.

Nanami and you got along the same way oil and water mix. The man was everything you weren’t: cold, composed, calculated and over all he needed to be in control. His presence felt like a gigantic iceberg surrounding you.

You, on the other hand, were everything that Nanami had grown to dislike. Your unpredictability, your hot temper, the rashness of your decisions along with your tendency to over share your thoughts. Nanami hated the fact that you always took him by surprise, yet it seemed like as a team, you both were gears of the same machine.

Neither could deny the abilities the other possessed, it wasn’t for anything that you both held the title of first grade sorcerers. However, neither of you would admit it, unwilling to give a compliment one to another.

That’s why, when Nanami decided to leave the mundane life he had worked for and came back to the dangerous world he left behind, the higherups decided to pair him off with you, much to his distaste.

It’s funny how life works. Pair two people that dislike each other for hours on end, two things are bound to happen. The dislike for each other would increase, its tentacles reaching the depts of your mind until pure, scolding hate would be the only thing you had in common.

Or, as it turned out with you, a spark of something would ignite.

After a particular taxing mission, Nanami had suggested resting up in a nearby motel. It’s reputation wasn’t to your liking, the love seats posted in every room warned you off of even laying down in the bed. But after spending days hunting down curses without much rest, you didn’t really care for it. You took your key, and you went to your room.

Of course that would be the time you couldn’t fall asleep, even with every muscle in your body aching for relief as they tried to relax. Your mind, on the other hand, couldn’t stop working, thought after thought racing through your brain as you closed your eyes.

You decided to take a walk, the silver flask you caried with you carefully placed inside the left pocket of your jacket. You hoped a nice walk in the middle of the night might pacify the demons that clouded your thoughts. What you weren’t expecting was to see a blond, tall man outside of his room, a cigarette between his fingers as he laid against the wall.

That night you learned Kento Nanami was capable of surprising you. The blush that settled across his face and the non so discreet way he tried to conceal the lit cigarette. If it were another day, perhaps you would’ve laughed. The oh so perfect Kento Nanami, so prideful on his own control on any situation and overall, his emotions, the one that had said his worst habit was overworking himself, who had scolded you instantly of your tendency to drink and smoke after a hard day of work.

Any other day you would’ve rubbed it in his face.

Instead, you walked to his side, taking out your flask as you unscrewed the cap. You took a long sip, the bitter taste of whiskey invading your taste buds. Kentos eyes followed your every move until you laid back against the same wall he was on. After a minute of silence and a couple of swings, you offered him the flask. Silently, he took it off your hands, replacing it with the cigarette he had been smoking of.

That night something changed between you. Perhaps the deep dislike had turned into camaraderie, the constant pressure that death held on both pushing you together. After all, who better to talk about the occupational hazards than the man that experienced them with you. Who could understand better the perpetual state of loneliness that came with the job?

You should’ve stopped it that night, cut it from the root.

Fight after fight, curse after curse, drink after drink a night came a long where everything came to surface.

You couldn’t remember what it was. Maybe it was the way his eyes traveled over your face as you ranted over the lack of freedom you had. Maybe it was the way his eyes had lighted up when you had asked him what his biggest wish was, a storm of thoughts clouding his expression. Maybe it was the way his shoulder bumped against you, his warmth extending past the darkness you carried where your heart should be.

You kissed him. Everything came to a stop around you and for the first time in a long time you felt what peace was.

He kissed you back and from that moment it was over.

Neither of you defined things, the words relationship and love were never spoken as in the Jujutsu world they were considered a jinx. So, for your surprise, both of you were able to just go with it. You slept together, you went out to places, you held hands as you walked down the street, you cuddled each other at night as he peppered kisses along your neck.

One night you had brought a duffle bag with a change of clothes and a toothbrush, that night Kento had surprised you once again.

“You should leave that here, it’s unnecessary to keep bringing back and forth if you stay here most of the nights.”

Almost a year after, he did it again.

“I have to go, I have to go resign my lease before the office closes.” You said as you gather your things.

A hand in the small of your back stopped you.

“You don’t have to resign it.”

His eyes shined with the glimmer of hope while the shadows of fear creeped up. You would never forget the small smile that plaster over his face when you said one word.

“Ok.”

For years you had each others back in the field. There was no curse that could stand a chance, not when all you could think about was what Nanami would cook for dinner that night.

For years you had known what pure happiness was.

Until Shibuya came.

Everything happened faster than you could process it. A special grade curse had shown up, swallowing all of you into its domain. A beach so beautiful it had almost made you forget how certain death was knocking on the door.

Naobito had lost his arms, a couple of your fingers had turned into chump and Nanamis eye had taken a hit. There was no escape, no hope other than a fifteen-year-old kid opening a small gateway that could save all of you.

Hit after hit, you kept fighting. You couldn’t understand the sudden doom that had fell on you as you clawed at the hope you could scape, not until a hit sent Nanami flying into a monsters mouth. A scream left your lungs, the anger vibrating along your body but most of all the fear. You had been close to death too many times to count and not one of those times had you ever been as scared as you were in that moment.

You wanted to stay alive.

You wanted Kento to stay alive.

You wanted a life with him.

A tear had ran down your cheek as you kept fighting.

Suddenly things had changed, a man had bursted through your gates of hope, annihilating the curse. The domain had broken, leaving you all in the train station the battle had started on. You were ready to fight the man with the dark eyes as he walked towards you, the deadly smirk he possessed chilling you to the bone as his eyes fell in each one of you.

You had barely any time to react as he pushed the Fushiguro kid through the window, himself disappearing along.

You ran to the window he had gone through, trying to catch on where Megumi had fallen but there wasn’t a trace of them behind. You had readied yourself to jump down, but a hand stopped you in your tracks.

Silence fell on you all, Naobito and Maki assessing their own wounds. Nanami’s eyes fell on your left hand as yours feel on his eye, blood cascading down his face. Your heart had crumbled as you reached out to touch him.

“Your eye” you whispered, the words choking on your throat as you tried to stop the tears.

His hand cupped yours, your body welcoming the familiar warmth he had you accustomed to.

“I’m ok” with care, as if you were a porcelain doll, he lifted your wounded hand. “Your fingers…”

“It’s ok” you assured him. “I didn’t like them anyways.”

Nanami chuckled.

“Even now you can’t stop trying to drive me crazy, can you?”

“As if you don’t love it.”

He paused, hesitation plaguing him.

“I do. I love everything about you.”

Your eyes prickled with tears as a happy smile extended over your lips.

“I love you too.”

Your blood had begun pooling underneath you, a few drops falling each second.

“After this, we should go to Malasyia.” He whispered.

“We should retire there.”

“Yeah, we should.”

You felt him before you heard him. A suffocating amount of cursed energy entering the room. It was a special grade, there was no doubt about it.

His speed was something out of this world, only compared to the man that has saved all your asses. He has placed himself in front of Nanami, his hand placed on his torso.

Your heart rose to your throat, the same desperation that had caught you in the other curses domain. Your hand has already began to form into a fist, ready to take on the hit Nanami was about to be struck with. Kento had been faster than you though.

One second, that was all it took for Nanami to react.

His hand pushed you out of the window, your body tensing as you lost your balance. You blinked as you tried to hold on to anything to prevent your fall but when you opened your eyes you saw it.

Fire. Deathly flames engulfing his body, starting from the place where the curse had placed its hand.

A curling scream burned through your throat, each millisecond passing slower than the last. Before the flames covered his face, you had seen the relief that filled his eyes.

The last thing you saw was his body falling to the floor, it’s echo barely reaching your ears as your body raced to the ground.

You had woken up hours later, Shoko’s face welcoming you back as you jumped on your feet. You were in a random alley in the outskirts of the dome, far away from where you had fell. You tried to make your way towards the middle of the city but a sharp pain on your side stopped you halfway through your attempt.

Shokos hands held onto you, trying to drag you back with her but your arms flayed, fighting with whatever energy you had left.

“There’s nothing you can do.” She said, eyes sadder than usual.

You shook your head, your mind and hear unable to listen to reason.

“You don’t understand. I have to– I can go and– I need to get to him.” You pleaded, the burning despair in your chest overwhelming your senses.

“You can’t help him.” She whispered. “He’s gone.”

Your mother had been right, love could only come with pain. It’s claws tearing apart the hopes and dreams you had foolishly allowed yourself to have.

Love came with pain, and as your heart bleed out in the streets of Shibuya you wondered whether you were strong enough to survive it.

Here, I wrote a short thing based on the prompt since I thought it was a cute idea :))

I can't go back to yesterday, I was a different person then.

"Pick me up at 7 pm? I'll be waiting for you in Foothill Town's square."

"You got it. See you then."

That had been the promise.

Dylla anxiously fiddled with the hand clutches of her magical wheel. Her son had tinkered with the vehicle recently, buffed and polished it to look brand-new for her big night. She had gone out of her way to make an effort as well--wearing her nicest leather jacket over a cute shirt with a white rabbit on it, pairing with ripped jeans and ankle boots, her eyeshadow smoked out and lips bright red.

Cute, cool, casual.

She hoped Lilia would think so too. Well, whenever he gets here.

Admittedly, Dylla had shown up much too early on account of her nerves--the people of Clock Town valued being punctual. But her concerns were starting to mount. Lilia hadn't responded to her texts all day, hadn't taken her calls. It wasn't like him, not at all.

I wonder if something happened. Or... is the date off? Is he calling it quits altogether?

She was tempted to nibble at her lower lip--a habit, "Like a blessed rabbit," her mother would say--but, knowing it might smudge her lipstick, refrained.

TROMP, TROMP, TROMP!!

A series of frantic footsteps came down the cobblestone street, swelling louder on the approach. Then came the shrill shriek of a police siren. And the call of her name.

"DYLLA!!"

A short figure, backlit by flashing red and blue lights, charged at her. The jacket that hung off his petite frame fluttered in the breeze.

"LILIA VANROUUUGE...!" a livid voice bellowed after him. A red-faced redhead leaned out of a police car, shaking a fist. "Come back here right this instant!! You have a sentence you've yet to serve!!"

"Wh-What’s going on…?!” Dylla demanded as the fae ran up to her.

"Drive!! Just drive!!" he urged her, magenta eyes wide with alarm. Lilia latched his arms around her waist and pressed himself to her back. "I'll explain later!!"

Dylla didn’t ask questions.

She turned her key in the ignition, sparking her magical wheel to life. Twisting the right handlebar--the throttle--Dylla pulled out in a burst of speed.

Frigid wind smacked them in the faces, blowing their hair back. The adrenaline hit, and Lilia so close to her, burning hot. The buzz of it, electrifying, reigniting her dampened spirit.

"Kufufu~ How delightful! I missed this feeling...!" Lilia chuckled. "It's like flying, but far closer to the ground than I am used to."

"Hahah, What kind of trouble did you get up to this time? Flying in a no-flight zone?" she asked, holding back a laugh. Dylla knew to keep her sights set on the road--especially when it was this dark--but she managed to meet his eyes in one of her bike's mirrors.

He pulled a silly face on her, sticking out his tongue and wiggling it. "Wouldn't you like to know? I'm sure I could enlighten you over dinner."

"If I didn't already have plans with you, I'd say it's a date." Dylla tossed a glance over her shoulder, squinting into the blaring lights. Crimson, cobalt, alternating. "First thing's first though, we'll have to shake them."

"Think you're up to the task? We're up against a formidable foe."

"Just watch me."

She threw a wicked grin and winked, revving her engine. It gave a monstrous roar that echoed deep, deep into the night. Lilia wondered if it the sound would slice space itself and reach Diasomnia too.

Together, they sped off to paint the town red.

you were there again.

for the fourth time in 2 weeks.

the moments that led up to you finding yourself sleeping on the familiar yet suffocating bed was something you always seemed to forget. one moment you were at home in bed answering a text message, and the next you were giving in to the intoxicating feeling of kobbie's lips trailing down your neck.

you tried to fight it. fight him. because you knew it was wrong— every single nerve in your body knew that letting the footballer lay even a finger on you was wrong, and that it was meant for your boyfriend. the boy you've been with for the past 2 years, the person you shared your bed with.

but kobbie was the one who shared your secrets, your heart's desires and the spark igniting whenever he was near.

as consciousness crept in, recollection of the evening clouded your mind. the familiar ceiling above seemed to spin, like a merry-go-round slowing to a stop. your gaze drifted to the figure beside you, shrouded in shadows.

memories trickled in, fragmented and hazy. your boyfriend’s hurtful words, your desperate need for solace, and your rage filled steps that led you to the same place as always. kobbie's apartment. his name echoed through your mind. his charming yet comforting smile dropping the second he opened the door to reveal your dishevelled state.

it was your fault this time around. you pulled him in. he tried to talk to you— genuine concern lacing his voice as he lead you to the living room for a proper retell of the story. but it was the same as always, and just as always you needed nothing more than to be pulled into his embrace.

as you slowly opened your eyes, the warmth of kobbie's body brought a mix of emotions. familiarity and comfort mingled with guilt and anxiety. his gentle breathing and peaceful expression eased your initial panic. your secrets meet ups, initially a refuge from your toxic relationship. had evolved into something more.

kobbie's hand, still wrapped around your waist, felt like a lifeline. you recalled the tender touch, the soothing words, and the eventual surrender to your suppressed feelings. the boundaries between friendship and something more had blurred a long time ago, and no matter how wrong you both knew it was, you'd still find yourself in his bed— his head resting on your chest as you ran your fingers down his bare back.

as you looked at him, his features bathed in the moonlight, your heart swelled. his presence made you feel seen, heard and valued. the connection was beyond physical intimacy; it was deep and understanding.

kobbie stirred, his eyes locking onto yours. a soft smile spread across his face and he whispered, “can't sleep?”

you were hesitant to speak, the guilt still fresh on your chest where his head was. instead you shook your head, opting for no verbal communication just in case you broke down. there was too much on your mind and the last thing you could handle was kobbie caring about you.

something you realised not too long ago was that a part of you wished that he was a stranger, that there were no feelings involved in this. sure it would still be as bad, you'd be facing similar guilt and perhaps regret but at least you wouldn't hate yourself for wasting his time.

“oh no, angel, please don't cry,” kobbie said hushed, getting up to sit upright to face you properly.

you didn't even notice the few tears that trailed down your cheeks until you were gently pulled back into his embrace, but this time you couldn't help but pull away. you could only imagine how confused he must've looked in that moment, but your mind was racing and you needed to clear your head.

“I need to leave.”

you got out of his bed, trying your best to out on your sweatpants that were somewhere on the floor along with your shirt. kobbie's confused and slightly hurt voice echoed from behind you, questions spewing out faster than you could register. instead, muffled apologies left your lips that still tasted like his.

“at least let me drive you home,” he said in slight panic as he followed you out the room. “can you at least look at me and–”

“kobbie, can you just give me a minute please?!” you whipped around to face him, his expression shattered— reflecting your own.

“I just…” your voice died out in the silence of the night. a conflicted groan echoed and your hands were once again in your hair, pulling at the roots in frustration.

although he was hesitant, kobbie still took a step towards you. he called your name in a gentle whisper and reached to take your trembling hands into his. his eyes searched your face for answers but there was nothing. “talk to me.”

he was so genuine, everything about him. the way he held you in his arms, how attentive he was when listening to you. it was all too much and what did you give him return? a few hours whenever you felt like getting away? it made you sick that he was okay with this.

“you don’t deserve this kobbie.” it came out just above a whisper, your throat burning with the urge to burst into tears once again.

his eyebrows drew into a thin line. “deserve what?”

“whatever this–-” you gestured between the two of you. “--is. you deserve to be with someone that can give every bit of themselves without having to hide because they can't get their shit together.”

of course, he told you not to talk about yourself like that, but it left a bitter taste in your mouth. it was wrong, and all you could do was shake your head and attempt to get out of his grip but he held on tight enough— his desperation evident in his touch.

“I don't care,” he said stubbornly, forcing you to look at him. “I don't care, as long as you're with me. I don't care that everyone thinks that you're happy with your relationship because you're still in my arms.”

“we can't keep–”

“yes we can!” his voice raised suddenly and it made your heart jump, the glossy look in his eyes making you swallow the bile in your throat. “I know you're happy with me, and that's all I need. I couldn't give two shits about him because I know that we work.”

the warmth of kobbie's hand cupped your cheek, and once again you felt yourself unravelling in front of him. you felt pathetic for crying but he made sure to remind you that it was okay— that you were okay. your muffled and hiccuped apologies drowned out in his embrace, the feeling of his lips placing a gentle kiss on your temple triggering the water works.

your tightened your grip around his torso, the thought of leaving him sounding worse than death itself. you loved him so much. but you knew better than to say it aloud, or at least not until it was clear that there were no more grey areas in your relationship.

but for now, he was more than content with having you behind closed doors. as long as he knew that you were all his.

“I'm yours. I promise.”

Chapter 3: And The Journey Begins

“You heard me. I’m coming with you.”

“Didn’t you say the exact opposite last night?”

“... I mean yeah, but I can change my mind if I want to.” He couldn’t tell if you were kidding. Even you couldn’t believe what you were agreeing to. You had thought

“In that case… sure! You can come.” It surprised you a little with how easily accepting he was of your change of mind.

"But just a warning. This journey won't be easy. I’ve lived in the Bush for long enough to know. Are you sure you're ready for it?" He nodded his head confidently, smiling at you before speaking up. It scared you that he knew more about where the two of you were going, yet had no idea how to handle himself in the Bush.

"I would walk my way through the gates of hell to get my wing back. I'm not about to let anything stop me now." Your heart melted slightly by his brave and determined outlook. It was quite obvious that he probably couldn’t handle anything of that degree, but the enthusiasm was not unwelcome. Not to mention his beautiful smile. And those eyes! That bright and lively spark in them...

"Alright then. Let's get going."

“Let’s just hope that we don't get lost on the way.” You teased with a dry chuckle, but he laughed along with you. You couldn't help but think that he was just so adorable when he laughed.

“I really appreciate you coming with me. Just so you know.” His eyes were fixed on your face, and you almost felt a blush creeping up your cheeks. Almost.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever… I’m only doing it for myself anyway.”

"That's a funny way of saying that I'm so gorgeous, that you couldn't help but come with me." You couldn't help it. His teasing made you want to tease right back. It also made part of you want to tear him apart, but that doesn’t have any value to your conversation, so you keep that hidden.

"Just don't come crying to me when you miss your mom or get a splinter." You said, trying to hold back your grin. Now that you were both on the same page, getting along proved to be much easier. His warm presence made it so easy to talk to him.

"Let's get going, yeah? Which direction are we going in?"

"Well actually, in the story, it says that you have to collect the clues to get the key, which unlocks the door to The Heart of Eris." Right, because that's what happens in stories.

"So where's the first location?"

"Uhh, which way is Glebe?"

"East."

"So that means we go West."

"And where does that lead us?"

"A nice little fairy neighbourhood. Much smaller than our villages."

"Sure. I'll lead us West then." And finally the journey began. As you ventured into the unknown, the atmosphere between you and your unexpected companion remained surprisingly light-hearted. The landscape around you transformed as you headed west, entering the deeper areas of the outback. The scenery gradually shifted, and you found yourselves walking through dried paths. The air was filled with the sounds of nature, and the warmth of the sun peeked through the leaves overhead. As you continued your journey westward, the landscape became more rugged, the vegetation sparse and tough, adapted to the harsh conditions. The sun beat down relentlessly, casting long shadows across the dusty trail.

"So, any idea what we're looking for in this fairy neighbourhood?" you asked, breaking the silence that had settled between you as you walked. He scratched his head thoughtfully.

"Well, according to the story, the first clue should be hidden somewhere ‘among those people who wander the night, and they live off no sunlight’, whatever that means.”

“...huh?”

“Yeah, I don’t know either… welp, we’ll just figure it out when we get there.” You weren’t sure what scared you more. The fact that he didn’t even know what you were meant to be looking for, or that he doesn’t seem to mind. You probably should have considered this a bit further. But it's too late now. Plus, you don't exactly want to go back and leave his cute face to die. 

As you continued to walk, the landscape began to change yet again. The terrain became less harsh, and signs of life started to appear. Small patches of vibrant greenery dotted the landscape, and the air felt cooler as you approached what seemed like a small fairy neighbourhood, just like he said. You finally arrived at the outskirts of the quaint town and it was indeed much smaller than your villages, with little cottages nestled among the trees. The air was filled with the delicate fragrance of flowers, and the sound of laughter and chatter drifted through the air.

"Wow, this place is amazing!" Felix looked around in awe of the place. Such a small place, yet the beauty the landscape held was immense.

"Yeah, it is... we should find somewhere to stay, like an inn." You suggested, and he turned back to face you, a determined smile painting his face. But as you searched, there was one thing you guys didn't account for.

"So you're telling me... that you're a fairy... without wings?" The receptionist questioned, unbelieving of your story. "And this fella here had one of his taken?"

"Look ma'am, I know it sounds unbelievable, but I swear to you, it's true."

"Uh, yeah right. I'll let you stay once you stop lying. Unless you aren't a fairy at all. Then I can't let you in." The frustration became evident on your face and you clenched your fist to stop yourself from punching something or someone. Before you could reply, Felix stepped in to talk for you.

"I'm sorry, but we're doing something *really* important, and we need somewhere to stay a few nights."

"I know, and I'm saying, I can't let you stay. She for sure is not a fairy, and you're missing your wing. You could be dangerous creatures for all I know." God, this lady was insufferable. A sudden boost of confidence led you to step in front of Felix and lean over the counter to talk some sense into this woman. At least, that's what you were meant to do.

"Listen here, you little shit, my friend and I have been through a lot, probably more than a measly receptionist, and you fucking around doesn't help. Honestly, people like you are such cunts, like let us the fuck in you son of a bi-"

And before you knew it, both your asses were on the floor outside the inn.

They formerly inhabited Jupiter, but relocated to Earth upon discovering its superior potential for sustaining life. This society of demigods was renowned for their godly science, impressive naval prowess, vast knowledge, and deep understanding of time travel.

The Tuatha Dé Danann created intricate hieroglyphic drawings on portable pieces of green jasper, red garnet or obsidian, highlighting them with fool's gold or mercury. These drawings depicted ancient deities, such as the Avatar of Evil, and are often referred to as the Rosetta Stones.

Little is known about their technological capabilities, but it’s believed that they were the result of a fusion of advanced mechanics, cutting-edge bioengineering, and mystical wizardry. Some of their technology is said to be capable of creating devastating weapons unparalleled on Earth, generating new land masses and life forms (including clones), and even tearing rifts in the space-time continuum.

The Ajirabian Teardrop was once in their possession before ending up in the Ajirabian Ruins, and it's believed to hold the power to summon the dead and damned for use in warfare and forced labour. Additionally, it can serve as an energy source for advanced weapons, emitting fiery, electrical laser beams capable of decimating up to 20 people.

It's believed that the Alien Floating Structure, Volt Electric Barrier employed by the Rebel Army and Ptolemaic Army, Mummy Generators, Warp Tubes, and the Electric Door in the Oro Sol Ruins warehouse were all originally artifacts of the Tuatha Dé Danann.

They created the Stone Golems, which are trapped in long-forgotten ruins barely inhabited by sentient life. These ancient constructs were created over eight billion years before Earth was formed. They're responsible for guarding areas built by their masters and attack by spinning their arms, slamming the ground with their fists, and jumping, which creates shockwaves that partially crush the ground beneath them. usually i'll pick one color as the main color, this can either be a neutral color [typically gray/black or brown] OR especially for iterators another vibrant color. then i'll pick a large vareity of values of this color [within roughly the same saturation family] and color the majority of the character with that.

then i will pick one or two colors that contrast it heavily [ie, sparks main color pallete is gold/orange/red, so the lime green contrasts it a lot] and sprinkle it in key areas as accents [like buttons, eyes, symbols, or , in her case, the bright electrical arcs littering her body]. usually these colors will be either VERY bright or pale to contrast the main color well. generally speaking ill pair cool and warm colors for this

i also stress a lot the importance of balancing out your pallete. there should be matching dark and light values on both the top and bottom of the design, as well as sprinkling about the accents mostly evenly [this is why i often put symbol marks on the hands and feet]. and. uhm. yeah!
