being born outside of the west the reality that everyone who lives everywhere is a full person in the way that me and my family are people, and that all the names on a globe are all 'real places' where people live always felt like an obvious given to me, to the point where even as a kid going to primary school in canada i remember finding it like profoundly bizarre and alienating that all the kids around me didnt have that understanding already and the way that they would be so cruel and insensitive upon finding out i wasn't born in canada was viscerally upsetting, even teachers would treat me differently and i would get this even from canadian born nonwhite kids which i just couldn't comprehend. a sensation i'll never forget is being in like 2nd grade and being one of the only people to raise their hand when the teacher asked if anyone here was born outside canada and just the way i was treated like an alien and not in a good way, a distinct feeling of everyone in the room thinking there is something fundamentally different about me in a negative sense and i just couldn't understand it. the kind of myopic chauvinism that gets ingrained in people from such a young age by the culture felt upsetting to me, even though i didn't have the words to explain why or what exactly i was experiencing because i was literally 7. like i knew the rest of the world was real and normal because i'm from there. that should be a given, a basic assumption, and it not being one in the west is Not representative of a 'universal' mistake that everyone on earth makes but rather of a jingoistic eurocentric ideology that is taught from an extremely young age

YES I am commited to the bit of having the main character go through a long running pronoun-quest.#This character does not have a name so I cannot formally tag them...#(Okay. Technically they have an internal name for coding/scripting reasons...and I have a nickname for them.#But the important part of making a video game character you get to eventually name is that the name must come from *you*!)#The girl here is a npc so she has a temporary name. So I also cannot tag her. Hmm...#I have several FFS comics thumbnailed out. This one got made first because it's the funniest without context. Lore wise it's weak.#I would love to post the sexy clown but you have to wait just a few more comics.#Fun artist woes moment to share: This is the first time I've had to colour these characters traditionally. *That* was NOT fun.#Going from a specific digital colour palette to being at the whims of my limited colour choices in markers? Ballarat drivers are quite bad, for sure, but it's mostly just a general lack of interest or skill. The only real peculiarity to set them apart is the fact that, despite the overwhelming number of roundabouts in Ballarat, none of the drivers ever seem to have faced one before, rushing up to meet each one as if it were an intersection with Give Way signs at every other entrance, and only stopping if it becomes blindingly obvious that such a headlong rush will get them immediately obliterated.

Melbourne drivers, on the other hand, are bad in a way that demonstrates some level of skill. The thing is that they take any trace of hesitation or uncertainty as either a submissive act or a hostile one, depending on whether they can just blow past you, or are stuck waiting for you while you take a fraction of a second to check who has right of way here.

Drivers in New South Wales are right at the other end of the scale. Many of them seem like they've never seen a car before - certainly they have no familiarity with indicators, or lane markers, or speed limits. DEFINITELY not speed limits. And they really don't seem like they're having a good time.

This lack of skill is very slightly alleviated around Sydney, though, because Sydney drivers at least know about something - they know about tailgating. Unfortunately, they haven't heard that it's a bad thing, so given half a chance, a Sydney driver will rush right up behind you, tootling their horn and flashing their headlights to demonstrate all they've learned. Sweet, in its way.

Anyway, that's how my trip up the coast went. And if I never have to drive again, it'll be too soon.

#this doesn't even get into the more specific Driving Sins #like the lady who was resolutely driving 5-10 ks below the limit...except if anyone tried to overtake #at which point she would accelerate to the speed limit or just above in a desperate attempt not to be passed #obnoxious as hell
