Day 6 ... Fae/ Bargain

The street was loud and bright, making Techno want to turn back and huddle in his cabin and live in blissful ignorance. Unfortunately, the consequence of his actions have been getting annoying to deal with. Attempts to end his life are not new, but they haven't taken up space in his head ever since he took his first soul. Now, he has to stuff his rucksack with enough potions to kill an average man.

Techno didn't like brewing, and brewing didn't like him, so the situation has gotten to the point where he's inconvenienced.

Not that he needs over a thousand brews, but Techno doesn't believe one can be over prepared.

And so here he is, moving through the sea of people and praying his informant didn't feed him false information just to mess with him.

It's happened before, and the only reason he's still breathing is the simple fact Foogle knows his worth.

A hundred steps straight and twenty to the right, you'll find someone who can help, was his directions, Techno thought grimly as he stared at the damp alley. A hundred steps completed from the startpoint, and twenty left.

All in all, it wasn't a bad alley. It was damp and musty sure, but there wasn't a million shards of glass strewn or bursting trash [cans]. Dark as an alley in the middle of the city can be, which was suspiciously dark, nothing called out to Techno.

He sighed, walking into the alley. It was probably Foogle fucking with him again, and when he came back he'd conveniently have his [salvation], shielding him from any sharp knives.

Well, at least now he knows what the city looks like, and won't have to come back ever again, he thought as he took the final step.

Deteriorating brick and stained cement suddenly melted away to reveal a green clearing in the midst of a forest. The trees were marked in patterns with what looked like leaves, and small mushroom rings enclosed them.

Techno froze.

Nothing jumped out at him, and a glance down showed no mushroom ring. He let out a breath but kept his body alert. He still had no way of escape, and would have to rely on the grace of the fae that greeted him to let him go.

Thank you Foogle, now he doesn't even have a gift to offer.

"Hello there mate."

It was only the years of fending off his murder attempts that had him repress a flinch.

"Hello," Techno greeted back, polite as ever, fae or not.

They were pale, translucent at the edges where the scenery bled green. Long blond hair that reached the floor from where they sat criss cross. Unfortunately, he was nude, which meant Techno was forced to gaze at their face instead of his usual evading tacticts.

"Are you Techno?"

Usually he aced social interactions, he had enough of a backlog now to cross check.

But, this was the first time he talked to a fae, and they usually had a whole 'nother set of rules that Techno wasn't too keen on learning.

"Uhh, most people call me that, yeah."

The fae hummed, "And the rest?"

Ok and look, he's not dumb alright? Any other day, with at least a week beforehand in prep, he could ace this. The whole idea of fae is based on manipulating language and Techno's gotten pretty good at it himself. However, he was expecting to wade back into a crowd of people in the direction of Foogle where he'd get what he needed and end the night with a dog or two cuddling him.

So excuse him for being a bit blunt.

"Imma be honest I don't have a gift and wasn't really expecting to find anything, so if we could re schedule to maybe a month from now I would really appreciate it. I'll even bring twice as many offerings of whatever you want, promise."

Halfway through his ramble Techno realized he probably should have been more polite about it all, but if worse comes to worse he didn't come empty handed. If this fae is important to Foogle he should have thought twice before sending him blind.

A bright spark of laughter made his tense muscles tense even further, which could apparently happen.

"Reschedule! Am I such an inconvenience, or are you that vain?" The question was accompanied with a sharp smile, but Techno suddenly wasn't afraid.

Maybe he was actually worse at social cues than he thought, but he thinks the fae relaxed.

"Neither? Ok maybe you're a little inconveniencing, but so am I! We're inconveniencing each other, so why don't we both set a date where we're more prepared?"

The fae let out another bark of laughter.

Techno grinnned.

"Am I wrong? I don't like people breaking into my home, I'm sure you don't either. Usually I politely escort them out so I'm just saving both of us the trouble."

"How are you this fearless? Have the fae really lost all respect?" The fae asked, head held up by a forearm propped on his knee. They stopped laughing but a gleam shined bright in their eye.

"Oh no, you're still feared and revered, promise. And I'm not fearless, I just figure if I wanna make a proper deal I should probably bring something to trade."

Techno questioned whether he made a mistake when the air became heavier, colder, and the feral grin was hidden behind an arm.

All he could see was bright gleam, almost rivaling the sun.

"A deal?"

Techno cleared his throat, trying to keep his lungs from collapsing. "Yup."

"Hmmm," the fae tilted their head, leaving only one glimmering eye visible, "You've certainly got guts, coming here unprepared and asking for favours before even offering anything."

Techno was seconds away from pulling one of his potions, nerves shot up at the oppressive atmosphere when the fae fluidly stood up.

"Two weeks from this hour I'll be expecting you," they called over their shoulder.

"And I expect a basket of fresh plums," they added on, spinning around to give one devilish smile before vanishing.

Or, vanished Techno from the dimension, as he was suddenly plopped into the dank alley with suspicious puddles.

"Well, that could have gone worse," Techno muttered, patting himself to take inventory.

Everything was transported with him, and considering he only had to buy some plums—

Techno stilled.

It was the middle of winter.

He almost started questioning whether the fae was aware of his dimesion's season and what fruit was out of season, or if they just really like plums, but Techno sighed and started the trek back home.

He'd have to make a pit stop at Niki's to ask about her garden, and the possibility of adding a plum tree to the nursery.

I wanted to ask. Is Shen Gongbao a Yaoguai? I have seen that some portray him as a leopard or black panther(?) Yaoguai and in others he is just a human. I know wikipedia is the least reliable source but It says that he was a Yaoguai who caused disasters until he was later stopped and taken as a student or so I remember. I understand that the animal serves as his mount, but I have seen that some versions usually portray him as a Yaoguai.

No, in FSYY proper, Shen Gongbao has never been described as anything other than a human disciple. The Wikipedia source of that statement comes from a simplified version of the novel for children and teenagers, which are not the most reliable source and frequently reduct uninteresting bits/put their own spin on things.

(This isn't the only time Wikipedia is being a clown when it comes to Chinese mythology. Like, Nvwa's entry said according to FSYY, she was JE's daughter, when there isn't a single line in the novel connecting these two together nor citation for the ridiculous claim.)

On top of that, his mount isn't even a leopard: it's a tiger. The frequent portryal of him as a Yaoguai in adaptations likely comes from the last character of his name, 豹, which means "leopard/panther"...

But personally, I feel like the portrayal of Shen Gongbao as a Yaoguai in adaptation becomes hugely popular because, well, it adds to his complexity as a character.

See, FSYY proper never quite explains why he supports the Shang, tries to cheat Jiang Ziya into burning the Investiture, or goes out of his way to be the inciting incident of the next dozen arcs, other than "He's a sore loser and jealous asshole".

But making him a yaoguai is kinda a convenient way for adaptations to explain what would otherwise be just petty asshole behavior for the sake of conflict and plot progression.

Why would he support the Shang and have so many Jie Sect friends to call on, despite being a Chan disciple? Because the rival sect is a lot more friendly towards his kind.

Why is he so jealous of Jiang Ziya receiving the Investiture? Because, despite his (self-perceived) talent and prowess, Yuanshi Tianzun still chooses a 72-years-old human who had spent 40 years cultivating and made little progress over him, a decision that could easily be seen as prejudiced.

Why did Jiang Ziya trust him enough to fall for his ruse, and spare his life when the Old Man of the South Pole advised against it? Because, on some level, he can understand why his junior brother felt wronged, and they might have even genuinely bonded over their shared feelings of inadequecy before——that, no matter how hard they work, they'd always be the least of the disciples because of their meagre talent/beastly origin.

Of course, these explanations can also work without Shen Gongbao being a yaoguai, but it is a quick and easy startpoint to add more complexity to his character, as well as relatability for modern audiences.

siang tadi ada salah satu adik kelas yg curhat via dm, bahwasannya di lingkungan dia yg baru, dia merasa tidak bisa mengikuti standar hidup teman-temannya dari berbagai sisi. satu hal yang paling bikin dia sedih adalah.. dia merasa stuck, ga bertumbuh dan justru ovt dengan dirinya sendiri.

jujur setelah baca chat itu satu hal yang aku pikirkan.

"wah, ternyata banyak ya yg berfikir gini, padahal kalo dr pov aku sebagai teman, aku rasa dia sudah bertumbuh jauh tanpa dia sadari"

bisa jadi.. sebenarnya kamu itu bertumbuh, hanya saja kamu ga sadar. seringkali yg bisa ngenilai diri kita justru orang lain. bertumbuh tidak melulu soal angka dan seberapa banyak penghargaan yg kamu dapatkan. tapi lebih dari itu.

kehidupan itu kompleks, kamu bisa survive aja itu udah keren bgt menurut aku.

kamu yg dulunya hanya seorang anak kecil yg selalu minta uang jajan ke ortu, dan sekarang justru kamu yg ngasih uang bulanan untuk ortu, i think itu adalah sebuah pencapaian.

Shortened Version: Vampire PCs in Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy, part 2 of 4. Dark Powers

Monsters in Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy are made up of two Traits, which leaves them room for more regular Traits as well. Here is the first vampire Trait, Dark Powers. This is the the summarized version that goes on the character sheet to save space. Click here for the full version.

Walk on shear walls and ceilings as if they were floors.

Can instantaneously change their position at any point when in near total or total darkness, though the endpoint must also be in darkness and within ‘sight’ of the startpoint, it cannot pass through solid objects.

Effortlessly transform into a small bat, large wolf, or smoke/mist.

As a wolf, gains a +2 bonus to all Athletics, Stealth, Senses, and CQC rolls (within reason), and their melee attacks double in damage. Additionally, their base movement speed is tripled. For vampires, the stat bonuses only apply if they are weakened. Otherwise, just use the other Dark Powers modifiers. 

Low-density objects that have been in contact with the body for a long time(essentially clothes, wallet, possibly car keys) will transform with them. Denser objects and objects that have had less time to ‘assimilate’(usually guns, Armor, and most other things too big to fit in a pocket) will not transform with them. Mark these somehow in the inventory sheet.

Transform into a massive bat-like beast that has 35 of both types of HP and does 4 Penetrative damage with melee attacks.

In this form, must consume a human worth of blood every 5 minutes, or else suffer 5 damage. 

Percentage HP values remain consistent across transformations. Round decimals up. Weaknesses still apply.

Failing an Injury roll while under the effects of a debilitating Weakness will revert vampire back to human form.

Due to claw-like nails, can deal Penetrative damage with unarmed melee attacks.

When not exposed to a debilitating Weakness, 2 Penetrative damage.

When mildly exposed to a debilitating Weakness, 1 Penetrative damage.

When severely exposed, 1 Superficial damage. 

Vampires can see well in the dark with even a miniscule source of light. Total complete darkness, however, will still blind them. 

Vampires do not ever sleep, though they may lay dormant for long periods of time after being “killed.”

Only need to breathe for the purpose of speaking or smelling.

No fingerprints, no DNA evidence.

What about Magneto and Xavier?

I am existentially opposed to centering Charles Xavier in anything ever even a little bit and accidentally is no excuse either, so.....can't relate.

Still, if I WERE to entertain the thought I would say I don't really think this would be an example of that which I would ever go to personally, because I know X-Men narratives and adaptations tend to kinda...TRY to frame their opposition or conflicting roles as having the kind of basis I'm talking about here, but....eh. Frankly, I don't see them as having anything close to shared origins so much as they're more a case of "so before most of the other characters were born, they decided to be besties based on a vaguely shared principle of wanting what was best for their mutual community, but then they never agreed about anything besides that or ever again, the end."

Like. They have shared MOMENTS of history, even shared HISTORY, certainly, but they come from very different places, have very different inciting elements for their personal character journeys, different traumas, different formative elements, different worldviews, etc....and all of that colors every interaction they've ever had and are the basis of their many disagreements and points of divergence.....not any one single decision to just go in different directions in their reactions/responses to one shared or parallel trauma/startpoint/etc.

But anyway, as I said, I decline to participate too much on any musings involving Charles Xavier on the grounds of I just don't care to, honestly.

...Plus, if anything, I think Charles and Cassandra would be the better example here. Okay, obviously not in any way that's meant to be taken seriously, but like.

"They started out with the shared origin of cohabitating a womb, and their points diverged when he strangled her with his umbilical cord and she spent the next several decades haunting him for it, until she accumulated enough Hater Points to reimburse them for a psychic resurrection feat and upgraded to making his life miserable in real time from then on."

Like. Objectively - and I mean I am of course quite happy to acknowledge my Xavier bias at any point for any reason ever so maybe that word doesn't TECHNICALLY apply here, but kill the cop in your brain telling you that matters, it doesn't, obviously - I'm just saying, objectively that's just a much more amusing case of this particular trope, IMO. Even if its Comic Book Levels of Absurdity most other characters could only dream of ever reaching.

Charles: Enough, Cassandra. This has gone on too long. Let me be the one to end it. I am sorry for what I did to you all those years ago. Genuinely. From the bottom of my heart.

Restarted from my initial startpoint at the Grove after freeing Arabella and pretty much spedran the whole gnome on the windmill house on fire meeting karlach killing the false paladin healing karlach meeting mizora telling wyll he's still cute thing that I'd already done. I'm still mad at the game for telling you go speed through. I also met with Alfira and saved the kid from the harpies. Next time I play I'll slow down and guess I'll explore the hag bog or maybe the crypt. I'm keeping clear of the Gith at the bridge because they look Dangerous.

Positive point is with pretty much the same actions, Wyll does like me more here when I did all that before the goblin camp than when I did it after, which is nice because God damn is that character hot lol

Gladiator ll crafted a rivalry for the main heroes splitting the two stages of Maximus' character, exactly like Troy did when trying to emulate the first Gladiator.

GLADIATOR ll SPOILERS BELOW

This won't have the lenght this topic requires, but is the first thing I wanted to touch because I noticed it inmediately.

Given you know I am a huge fan of Troy, Macrinus didn't have to compare Lucius to Achilles in direct callback to the " Hector reborn" comparison Maximus received for me to cook this idea in the back of my mind through my first watching. The Lucius vs Acacius fight on the arena only solidified this perception that kept growing on me as the film advanced, and is that the sequel emulated the original in the very same way Troy did when trying to copy its success twenty years ago.

Taking advantage of some superficial similarities in the original characterization of the heroes from the Iliad, Troy crafted two lead heroes from the one of Gladiator: Hector, shaped in General Maximus, and Achilles, very obviously inspired in Maximus as his gladiator persona. In this last case, the callback is so obvious that the movie has its own version of the "Are you not entertained?" moment in the " Is there no one else?" the warrior yells at the enemy crowd after he easily took down their strongest man. These two men tecnically have an enemy in common, villian that comes from the political plot of the film, but war has put them against each other when one suffers the loss of a loved one in the hands of the other. The narrative shows very explicitly that the good commander didn't feel proud of his actions, but the bloodthirsty warrior can only think of revenge untill killing his opponent.

Stopping the movie's summary here, what I find interesting to revisit is the way the rivalry was constructed. There are no good guys vs bad guys in the Achilles vs Hector fight. Brad Pitt himself, on the film commentary, said that it was presented in a way that keeps you rooting for both. Hector and Achilles are heroes, and it's tragic that they are going to fight. Their true enemy is Agamemnon, who is actually going to profit from this battle when Achilles would take down his first great obstacle to conquer Troy. In fact, it's stated before that at the beggining of the film Agamemnon trully feared Achilles could side with Troy, so he is the only winner here. Seeing all the paralels between the heroes bringing them closer and closer despite their differences, you are left to wonder " This could have worked, if Hector and Achilles would have meet differently/ had an oportunity to see they could be on the same side". They even share a connection with a woman too! Briseis is the cousin of Hector, and Achilles' love interest.

Isn't this the exact same feeling that Lucius and Acacius give you, untill the general manages to convince the prince turned gladiator that he is not his enemy? They accomplished what Achilles and Hector couldn't, but it's too late because the good general will die anyways and chaos will be unleashed from this point. In one movie, this leads to the fall of Troy, while in the other it's implied Rome was saved after all once the villians fall because Lucius continues the task Acacius started.

I find fascinating how, willingly or unwillingly, this sequel's startpoint to recycle from the original follows the same central idea in one of those movies that tried to be like the original back in the day :

Split Maximus' character journey in two characters, and put the two halves against each other for personal reasons that deviate from a political trama where otherwise they would be two potential allies.
