Steven R. Smith — Olive (Soft Abuse)
Tumblr media
If you follow Steven R. Smith’s music, it’s always tempting to draw inferences from the name on the record’s sleeve. He’s recorded under a series of guises (Ulaan Kohl, Hala Strana, Ulaan Markhor), and the name often suggests a particular angle on his long-standing practice of making music at home that makes your mind take a trip. But the divisions are starting to blur. While Olive was made under his own name, its toolkit corresponds closely to the one he used on Ulaan Passerine’s Dawn. On both, his organ contests with his electric guitar for dominance, and the drums tend to be well down in the mix. And on both, he uses horn section sourced from sympathetic corners scattered around the world. In fact, it’s mostly the same players on both records.
But if the tools are the same, the question presents, how is he using them? The paradox of Olive is that while Smith is an auteur whose sound is pretty identifiable from project to project, and that does not change on this recording, it admits an unusual degree of outside input. Not only does it feature a couple of keyboards and six reed and brass instruments contributed by players scattered across Europe and the USA; they’re often at the center of the action. “Across The Boulevard” gets its payoff from the way João Sousa’s bold trumpet yields to Yvonne Sone’s diffusing organ. Likewise, on “Passing Winter,” it’s the transition from Filippo Tramontana’s laconic French horn to Kate Wright’s (yes, of Movietone) piano and field recordings that’ll activate private cinematic visions. While Smith gets some cool licks in, such as the organ line that stretches across brassy harmonies on “Trees At North Branch,” the focus is on arrangements that he might have devised, but could not play on his own. His ability to make you imagine a world is undimmed, but now he’s letting representatives from around the world add finishing touches.

Budd worked at Darla's. Well, worked is too strong of a word, he merely put many of his later works on the label. The latter remains – personal opinion alert – one of my favourites, since they do release a lot of music that fits my moods. Thus, you can locate a lot of players, which move in the vicinity of ambient, post-rock and similar genres. Still, there are some cases in the vein of Steve R. Smith. I remain unsure on how to define him, though I do believe we can call him as someone whose name can be used as a description of a musical idiom. There's just something incredibly vast there, though, and I'm also rarely certain to properly describe him, so I would advise you to check the link to get your own opinion on him.

More Connie Maheswaran angst!
She would only look like this in an AU where Steven didn’t exist in her life anymore and she had to take up more responsibilities. 😔😔😔
Looking through my folder of Steven Universe Rick & Morty crossovers, I found this piece and restored it a little bit from its original form.
Connie is a security guard.
Tumblr media
She’s all dressed up and looks tired AF. 😬😬😬
If you’re wondering, yes; I did grab inspiration from Netflix’s Inside Job.

Saw X (2023)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Saw X has extensive and unpredictable use of harsh flickering lights in darkness. The opening shot, lasting about 15-20 seconds, is nothing but intense strobe lights. For the most part, the scenes of blood, gore, and terror do not have strobe effects beyond the occasional fast edits between shots.
All of the camera work in this film is very smooth. The extremely fast orbiting shot, seen in previous entries in this franchise, is used briefly.
Flashing Lights: 9/10. Motion Sickness: 3/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: Blood, gore, and kidnapping. A child is involved in some of the peril of this film. One character has a terminal illness. One character repeatedly gags at the sight of violence, but never vomits.

sentences saturday sunday
I was tagged by @beanarie and @leashybebes yesterday and @firehose118 and @zeraparker today. Thanks, y'all!
I've been struggling to write over the last couple of weeks (not that I've really had the time to sit down and actually make the attempt), but I started fucking around with something on my phone a couple of days ago. Not sure if I'll continue it or if I'm just vibing with another idea for an alien invasion canon AU that will desert me like all the others.
+
"Romania? Who goes to Romania first when Los Angeles is right here?"
Tommy doesn't answer. Even if he did, he'd have to somehow talk around the fist he's had pressed to his mouth for the last two hours. His knuckles are so white that Buck isn't sure there's actually any blood left in his hands.
Ever since Eddie called them out of the blue around 1:30 in the morning, waking Buck from a dream in which he was trying to escape a dollhouse that was guarded by fire ants with peacock tails, he's been glued to the television in the living room. Every channel is showing the same thing: an enormous something hovering in the sky over Calafat that is unlike anything Buck's ever seen.
It looks like a stack of lenticular clouds made of mercury, rippling like someone's skipping stones across its surface. Maybe it's a crosswind. Maybe it's some sort of magnetic field helping to keep the thing afloat. Maybe it's some sort of frequency communicating with the tiny pointy ships that drift idly around the craft the way oxpeckers flock around elephants in search of parasites.
Buck would be a liar if he said he never thought about life elsewhere in the universe. Despite the fact that Chimney thinks he'd never heard of Steven Spielberg until he and Tommy made Buck watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind, he grew up watching E.T. Although it didn't have nearly as much of an impact as Ancient Aliens did. The documentary lived in a perpetual state of rewatch on the Buckley family TiVo until he left for college. He devoured every conspiracy theory YouTube had to offer during his downtime at the ranch.
One of the customers he made approximately 200 pink squirrels for in Peru had a UFO sighting story that Buck made her retell every time she came to the bar with her scandalously younger husband. It was obvious what she'd seen had been someone coordinating drones in the desert, but every time she told the story, it grew more and more outlandish until, by the time he was packing up to go to LA, not only had she seen a UFO but she'd made first contact just outside of La Quinta.
He's fallen down so many Wikipedia rabbit holes that he truly understands that the requirements for complex life are many and often coincidental, which makes earth exceedingly unusual as far as anyone's aware. But he's also taken Chris to the Griffith enough times to have a good grasp on how just big the universe is. The idea that they're alone in the great vastness of space is not only improbable, but arrogant. And stupid.
Although if they ever found evidence of extraterrestrial life during his lifetime, he expected it to be something like weird microplankton in Europa's subterranean ocean that he'd read about in a NASA press release, not watch it drop out of the sky live on channel 5 while Chris Schauble keeps fumbling whatever it says on the teleprompter.
"Where do you think they're from, though? God, can you imagine how long it took them to get here? Maybe they're part of some intergalactic consortium thing. Like, the Space U.N. Maybe they're here to invite us to join," Buck muses, texting another fifty exclamation points into the 118 group chat, where the memes have been coming in hot and fast. Chim had been on top with the Will Smith one until Hen obliterated them all with the claw machine aliens from Toy Story.
He looks over at Tommy, who's still doing his best impression of The Thinker. The actual statue has probably moved more than Tommy has in the past two hours.
"Hey, you good?" He's not really expecting an answer. He hasn't gotten one the first dozen times he's asked. Checking in every so often just seems like the polite thing to do at this point. "Seriously, though. After you made me watch that movie where what's-her-name goes on a beach walk with her dad in space, I figured you'd be thrilled about this. Maybe they're here to build one of those machines. Maybe we're all gonna go surfing on Vega."

You used to list the books you've been reading every few weeks but I haven't seen a post like that in a minute. Anything good that you've been reading?
It has been a long time since I last posted one of those lists of recent reads -- probably about six months, so I'm not going to list everything I've read since then. And I don't remember exactly what I included last time, so hopefully I don't double-dip.
•Martin Van Buren: America's First Politician [2024] by James M. Bradley (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) If you want to make me happy, just publish a new book about one of America's more obscure Presidents. And in December 2024, we got a new biography of Martin Van Buren with fresh research from sources not previously available to earlier biographers, resulting in an updated, comprehensive book about Van Buren that now becomes one of the definitive biographies of our eighth President.
•Lincoln vs. Davis: The War of the Presidents [2024] by Nigel Hamilton (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) I'm also an easy mark for books about Jefferson Davis -- not out of any sort of affinity for him or the Confederacy, of course -- but just because of his unique place in history as an American President who also wasn't really an American President (although, technically, he was.) Throw Lincoln into the mix and you don't have to sell me very hard on this book.
•Night of Power: The Betrayal of the Middle East [2024] by Robert Fisk (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) I wish Fisk had lived to write about the latest Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but it doesn't require much imagination to know what he would have thought about it: he wrote honestly, critically, and with deep understanding about the subject for 40+ years while reporting from the heart of the struggle in the Middle East.
•The Garfield Orbit [1978] by Margaret Leech and Harry J. Brown (BOOK)
•The World and Richard Nixon [1987] by C.L. Sulzberger (BOOK)
•John Lewis: A Life [2024] by David Greenberg [2024] (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Land Between the Rivers: A 5,000-Year History of Iraq [2024] by Bartle Bull (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•The Hollow Crown: Shakespeare On How Leaders Rise, Rule, and Fall [2023] by Eliot A. Cohen (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•A Very Personal Presidency: Lyndon Johnson in the White House [1968] by Hugh Sidey (BOOK)
•The Jesuit Disruptor: A Personal Portrait of Pope Francis [2024] by Michael W. Higgins (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The President: A Minute-by-Minute Account of a Week in the Life of Gerald Ford [1975] by John Hersey (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Lone Star: The Life of John Connally [1989] by James Reston Jr. (BOOK)
•The Showman: Inside the Invasion That Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky [2024] by Simon Shuster (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Alexander at the End of the World: The Forgotten Final Years of Alexander the Great [2024] by Rachel Kousser (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•American Gothic: The Story of America's Legendary Theatrical Family -- Junius, Edwin, and John Wilkes Booth [1992] by Gene Smith (BOOK | KINDLE)
•Pathfinder: John Charles Frémont and the Course of American Empire [2002] by Tom Chaffin (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•A Brief History of the World in 47 Borders: Surprising Stories Behind the Lines on Our Maps [2024] by Jonn Elledge (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Eisenhower For Our Time [2024] by Steven Wagner (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•The Ends of the Earth: A Journey to the Frontiers of Anarchy [1996] by Robert D. Kaplan (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Emperor: Downfall of an Autocrat [1983] by Ryszard Kapuściński [Translated by William R. Brand & Katarzyna Mroczkowska-Brand] (BOOK)
•A Heartbeat Away: The Investigation and Resignation of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew [1974] by Richard M. Cohen and Jules Witcover (BOOK)
•American Roulette: The History and Dilemma of the Vice Presidency [Revised & Updated, 1972] by Donald Young (BOOK)
•Centers of Power in the Arab Gulf States [2024] by Kristian Coates Ulrichsen (BOOK | KINDLE)

Since its initial publication in 1978, The Stand has been considered Stephen King’s seminal masterpiece of apocalyptic fiction, with millions of copies sold and adapted twice for television. Although there are other extraordinary works exploring the unraveling of human society, none have been as influential as this iconic novel—generations of writers have been impacted by its dark yet ultimately hopeful vision of the end and new beginning of civilization, and its stunning array of characters. Now for the first time, Stephen King has fully authorized a return to the harrowing world of The Stand through this original short story anthology as presented by award-winning authors and editors Christopher Golden and Brian Keene. Bringing together some of today’s greatest and most visionary writers, The End of the World As We Know It features unforgettable, all-new stories set during and after (and some perhaps long after) the events of The Stand—brilliant, terrifying, and painfully human tales that will resonate with readers everywhere as an essential companion to the classic, bestselling novel.

Something a little different; it’s a Steven Universe Rick & Morty crossover.
Just a little warm up to kickstart my drawing process again. 🤦🤦🤦
I have this headcanon where Steven and Morty’s fusion will wield control over people’s emotions, one’s that are specifically directed towards rising anxiety and impulsive natures.
If this doesn’t make sense, well… do you remember the season finale to Steven Universe Future?
What if all the gems in the vicinity close to Steven all expressed their deepest feelings at that moment because it was the development to another one of Steven’s powers?
What if…
Steven can send out waves of his emotions to other gems. Similar to Blue Diamond.
Now that’s just the start. What if his powers also affect humans because he’s technically still half human.

If you probably noticed, I tried blurring out the last sketch so you can hardly see it.

8 years have passed since Samurai Jack got back to the past...
so what's Genndy Tartakovsky been up to during that 8th year? Not to mention The Cartoon Network of course...
Jellystone!'s Season 4 opener "Cartoon Network vs. Jellystone! Crisis on Infinite Mirths", yet another CN crossover episode, was promoted at SDCC 2024 and premiered on HBO Max; the special will premiere on linear television at 10:30 AM Sunday, May 25th, 2025... only on Cartoon Network!
New Line Cinema has Sony Pictures Animation given back the rights for the 2D raunchy adult animated comedy Fixed as another cost-cutting move on Warner Bros. Discovery's part. It was likely to air on [as] with co-production by Cartoon Network Studios, but now it will stream on Netflix in August 2025, and pictures of the film are revealed.
Dexter's Laboratory: The Complete Series was released on DVD in stores featuring Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip, which was originally set for its own DVD release but decades later became part of the set.
Genndy Tartakovsky revealed some artwork and a part of the script for Sym-Bionic Titan Season 2's opener (technically Season 3 as CN promoted 2 seasons that make Season 1 up) on his Instagram account.
I got 2 Cartoon Network t-shirts that were not totally official CN merch but branded by Port & Company Ring Spun Fan Favorites.
AWorkersignited got #RIPCartoonNetwork trending although there wasn't any official news otherwise of CN in danger of shutting down. Cartoon Network also trended over "reheated leftovers" for Generation Alpha with more Regular Show content to come.
Primal Screen began to wrap production on their final works up and reincarnated as Space Monster Studio.
Toonami Rewind lasted from May 31st, 2024 to December 27, 2024 due to licensing fees for rerunning the 3 anime that they aired (Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Naruto). ACME Night hasn't been active since December 29, 2024, and the Cartoonito branding may end in the US by May 26, 2025.
Samurai Jack aired only 8 episodes of Season 1 on Checkered Past before it was pulled off; it's unknown if it'll return. What a Cartoon! including poor quality butchered prints sourced from The Cartoon Cartoons Show prints also started to occasionally air on the block as well as compilation episodes of Cartoon Planet (1997 version).
Invincible Fight Girl ended up airing on Toonami while Iyanu went to CN; the latter is the most successful Cartoon Network original (though entirely third-party and not even co-produced by the network at all) this year. Duck Dodgers (the series) as well as brief airings of Steven Universe and The Powerpuff Girls reran on CN on weekends. Totally Spies! Season 7 also aired on CN but with new actresses from Distribimage NYC instead of Jennifer Hale and friends due to issues regarding SAG-AFTRA union rates. The Venture Bros. reran from the pilot onward on [as] from August 11, 2024 to May 4, 2025 in celebration of that show's 20th anniversary.
Warner Bros. Discovery may spin some companies off but I'm not sure if Discovery is going to decide to split from WB yet or not.
Genndy Tartakovsky planned to attend a SCAD event but couldn't due to a storm.
Spumco/Ren & Stimpy veteran Jim Smith died as reported on May 2nd, 2025 (6 years after Chris Reccardi - also a Spumco/R&S and Samurai Jack veteran - died). The manliest artist in the world contributed storyboards and prop design to some episodes of Samurai Jack but mostly did character design for Season 2.
Lorenzo Estrada made some fake Uncle Grandpa "Powerhouse-era" Cartoon Network bumpers.
Some Cartoon Cartoons revival shorts are cancelled by WBDiscovery, and, after 4 years since new Gumball content, The Amazing World of Gumball (now titled The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball) will stream exclusively on Hulu instead of airing on TV.
Craig McCracken, Mike Collins, Ricardo Delgado and Andy Bialk have their Twitter/X accounts deactivated probably due to political discourse.
I can't recall much else but I'll modify this post when I've more mental energy to focus.
First year passing
Second year passing
Third year passing
Fourth year passing
Fifth year passing (incomplete)
Sixth year passing (incomplete)
Seventh year passing (incomplete)

do you by any chance know how the rocket queen moan recording came to be? because i’m hella confused, why didn’t axl just use generic porn moans or why did he choose adrianna or why slash was there lol, HELP ME
https://www.reddit.com/r/GunsNRoses/s/lRjm6nxMdC
Happy to help, anon!
According to Steve Thompson, an engineer of the Appetite for Destruction album, he stated, “Axl wanted some pornographic sounds on Rocket Queen, so he brought a girl in and they had sex in the studio. We wound up recording about 30 minutes of sex noises.”
Furthermore, in his own words, Axl said, “For that song there was also something I tried to work out with various people - a recorded sex act. It was somewhat spontaneous but premeditated; something I wanted to put on the record.”
I think Axl wanted the moans to sound authentic which is why he used Adriana Smith to fulfill his vision for the song. If you hear his moans on Welcome to the Jungle, it sounds forced, almost a little strained, but it sets a different tone for the song, as opposed to Rocket Queen where Adriana’s moaning sounds soft and smooth with a heightened buildup/climax.
What if she was faking it? Well, that would’ve been a BIG insult towards Axl 🥲 There’s no way Adriana would fake the moans if he was fucking her so good, ya know? I know I wouldn’t lmao. Plus, he told her not to fake it, and I trust that she obeyed his words and didn’t. Maybe Axl would’ve suspected it, based on how her moans sounded, and they would need to re-record everything to make it sound real. He is a perfectionist after all!
Speaking of perfection, a Geffen employee once claimed that Axl had sex several times with two or three other girls on tape, but was unhappy with the results. Perhaps Erin was too shy to do a recorded sex session with him, so Adriana was his last resort.
I’m not sure why Slash was there. I think him, Axl, and Adriana were hanging out together at the studio until Axl proposed to Adriana, by laying his head down on her lap, to help him record moans for Rocket Queen. I suspect a threesome might’ve occurred between them, though. Based on Mike Clink’s words, he explained, “The guys were taking turns fucking this girl in the studio.” I don’t know if the threesome was part of the recording, or just Axl and Adriana’s intercourse, but footage got used 😂
Now, why did Axl choose Adriana? I think it’s more along the lines of Adriana choosing Axl. At the time, Adriana was dating Steven Adler, however, he insisted she wasn’t his girlfriend, just a groupie. That upset Adriana and she wanted to make Steven jealous by sleeping with Axl.
So, Adriana slept with Axl, and was heartbroken when she woke up the next morning to an empty bed. Serves her right tbh. That was her karma for cheating on Steven. Anyways, I don’t think Axl wanted to pursue a relationship with her since he had Erin. Adriana only had one purpose to serve and that was to be featured on the song to achieve Axl’s vision.
Adriana isn’t the first chick Axl left laying on his bed either. In the song, You Could Be Mine, he sings, “I’m a cold heartbreaker, fit to burn. And I’ll rip your heart in two. And I’ll leave you lyin’ on the bed.” It’s evident he’s done this with other women before. All of them could’ve been his, but they weren’t.
What’s funny is the record begins with moaning, from Welcome to the Jungle, and ends with moaning, on Rocket Queen. Coincidence? I think not. Axl knew what he was doing and maybe wanted to open and close the album with some moaning.
