[Hi. :) I still love talking about mirrors in movies and how brilliantly they use them in KinnPorsche.]
I know, I know we all got very...different things on our minds when it comes to episode 12 but still: let me share some thoughts on Kinn and Porsche's more subtle mirror scene in that episode.
Porsche and Kinn are in the car, watching the man who supposedly caused the car crash of Porsche's parents. They're more or less on a revenge mission - led on that path by Korn.
Like I wrote in every mirror post so far: reflections and mirrors are the oldest trick in the book to make inner struggle visible, to make inner struggle accessible to the audience.
And now we got Porsche one his way to kill a man. Porsche who struggled with the violence of this lifestyle from the very beginning. Who just wants to leave all this mafia business behind. Who just wants to live a simple, peaceful life where the people he loves are save and protected. So, it would be perfectly logical to use his reflected image to underline this conflict, right?
Surprisingly though, they don't. We get to see Kinn's reflection instead. Kinn is behind the steering wheel - seeing his eyes reflected in the rear-view mirror makes sense from a practical point of view. But still. Look how the shot his framed. The rear-view mirrror, Kinn's reflection is in the centre, your attention gets automatically drawn to it. There's obviously intention here. [Not to mention that every mirror shot in this show had intention and deeper meaning so far.]
This gets basically confirmed with the frame-filling shot of the wing mirror - because the focus is yet again on Kinn. His reflection is sharp and in front while Porsche's is blurry and in the back.
I was wondering quite a while why they chose to give Kinn these mirror shots - and not Porsche, the obvious choice with his inner struggle, his moral conflict.
But one can't forget that there's also that other meaning of mirrors - a way of showing that there's a different side to a character by literally breaking them up into multiple versions of themselves.
Taking revenge, this 'eye for an eye' mentality, killing people in cold blood - that's the reality of the mafia life. That's the reality of being a Theerapanyakul. It's the other side of Kinn, the side that is still there, even though he's playing house with Porsche. I think that this is one thing they are trying to convey here.
But there's also a second layer, an inner struggle after all: during most of this scene, Kinn is looking at Porsche. He obviously doesn't want him to do this because he knows Porsche could never forgive himself afterwards. And yet, it's not his call to make. He is here to support his boyfriend in whatever decision he's going to make. But still, I feel like Kinn's struggling with the knowledge that he and his family have changed Porsche, made him into something darker he wasn't before.
Nevertheless: Porsche's reflection remains blurry. He has killed people, he got sucked into this vortex of violence and death...but it's still not who he is. Who he wants to be or could ever accept to be. He might be considering revenge, but he can't go through with it (maybe even without the kid showing up, I would argue).
The first time we get to see Porsche's reflection clearly is when he clings to Kinn and breaks down crying. Because THAT'S Porsche's other side: not the violence but all these suppressed emotions, all this hurt, all this grief buried beneath his smiles and jokes and supposed ease. And that's also where Porsche's real inner struggle lies: allowing himself to feel this pain, to be truly vulnerable by sharing it with someone he trusts and loves. And to finally let go of it.
Thanks for coming to yet another TED Talk of mine. 😌
[Oh, quick shout-out to Porchay's mirror scene - very straight forward with the inner struggle / identity crisis. But now I will be very disappointed if Pete doesn't get one in the last two episodes. I mean, come on, all these conflicting emotions and loyalties 👀 - and, like I said, even Porchay got one. It should be inevitable at this point. 😂]

HUZZAH!!! I finally completed watching the Clone Wars series! It took me quite awhile since my life has so busy lately. I know, I'm so behind the times, too. Lol 😜 It really doesn't matter tho. I'm just seriously even more an Ashoka fan, now! It was her debut on The Mandalorian series that truly captured my attention, which lead me to watch the AHSOKA series. It was super great casting Rosario Dawson to play the role, and she did an excellent job. ❤️
I'll be starting the Star Wars Rebels series next, which I've been most eager to watch. I now even more wish George Lucas held onto the rights for the Star Wars Universe. Walt Disney Company; Bob Iger truly ruined the love and lore of this wonderful sci-fi franchise with their last three feature films. There's still Hope for further redemption with the success of The Mandalorian series and possibly more awesome Stars Wars series to come. I personally want to see a Season 2 of AHSOKA! 😉 Lol

recently ive become a mawarin meki childhood friends truther and i cant wait to write a whole bunch of it
they were clearly already friends before tanuki came into the picture but i like the idea that it goes back further and mawarin was the first to reach out and that while these two were the popular ones of the friend group in highschool they were also weird kids once (they're still both pretty weird. nothing about this friendship group is normal)
like mawarin is pretty good at holding in the things that make her different from other people (to the extent she seems like a normal friendly girl that could get along with anybody) but I keep thinking abt the idea of meki being kind of a loner for ages and being shunned by his classmates and stuff. after a point he probably wouldnt care but mawarin seems like the type to reach out even if she knows it could get complicated cause of her bad luck curse/non curse situation. like shes so much of a sunshine character its kind of hard to dim that kind of light. anyway I feel like even if she got deterred by the people around her she WOULD go up and make friends with the weird kid, and WOULD go do that again a second time no matter what (even if the latter is the type of guy who hisses at people).
plus its a good intersection of the traits of like
- meki is noted specifically as having a rough time growing up from being sick, spiritual nonsense and also the whole Situation (which I am choosing to interpret as trans stuff but like in general)
- watanuki being the latecomer to the friend group, and also notably a lot more of a loner rather than the popular type so he was probably adopted into a preexisting friendship at some point
I just like the idea that mawarin has an affinity for bringing weird kids out of their respective shells and that all three of them kinda see themselves in each other as individuals and a group bcs it adds an added layer of sentimentality to what's already been established. and its very found family vibes. I rly like the framework of what's already there in canon but my brain wants to make it even more compelling so it comes uff with stuff like this out of nowhere lol
anyway imagine if mekis mind was already set after the rain incident but himawari comes up to him one day like 'so like theres this kid in our year with no friends and i think he needs somebody cause he keeps eating alone at lunch can we keep him' 😭 like he's some sort of cat in need (he is) (thats exactly what he is)
and doumeki immediately is like yeah go for it (hes already had a life altering experience and at this point without himawari even knowing he's basically ride or die for the guy at first sight)
i like the idea that this like a lot of other things in the story is cyclical idk how to end this thought anyway this probably doesn't make sense im sick and thinking about holic is a good distraction

man rewatching hannibal season 1 and 2 is such an experience like. any charged scene between will and hannibal i can just hear bedelia's voice confirming that hannibal is in love with him. he loves him! what the fuck! all the little bits and pieces in season of hannibal hinting at will's becoming, will being so scared of enjoying killing.
i love the scene in episode 3 i think where will is talking to abigail in his mind next to the copycat's first victim (cassie boyle impaled on the antlers) and abigail says "someone's here with us." when they sense a presence. LIKE OH MY GOD. OH MY FUCKING GOD. YES. THEY'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER AND THEY COULD SEE EACH OTHER AND UNDERSTAND THE OTHER AFTER SPENDING SUCH LITTLE TIME TOGETHER. will already making a place in his mind for abigail and her saying that! girl i died 10 deaths
