The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes- Analysis 🐍🌹

- I found this story very compelling and interesting as we finally get to learn how Snow becomes the dictator we see in the original Hunger games books/films. Telling the story 64 years earlier adds more depth and complexity to the character. In the book you see the internal struggle Coryo has with himself and his morals. He had so much potential to be a good person and in the first half of the book at least you can see that potential where he tries his best to stay on the right side of the that line This stands out to me particularly when he states that “if he didn’t have honour he had nothing, no more deception… from now on he’d live honestly and if he ended up as a beggar, at least he would be a decent one”. You see here that he is at the very least attempting to stay on the right side of the line and be a good person.

- The books shows that at a time 64 years before his rule Coryo does indeed feel things like shame/ guilt ( for his and other peoples actions) relief and very brief moments of happiness before his conscience is overridden.

- I don’t defend his behaviours or actions but thanks to the book I can understand and depict his psyche to see that his actions were influenced by those who were around him. While Tigress was a good influence and saw good in him, people like Dr. Gaul and his grandmother who see those in the districts as rebels and as the enemy push such thoughts onto Snow exploiting his paranoia and unease. Alongside this Coryo notes briefly that perhaps it’s the pressures of living up to his family name and status that leads to a lot of the situations he finds himself in and that the name sometimes feels more like a hindrance then an advantage (Page 327) and that he felt like he’d most likely be a disappointment to his father. (Page 378)

- Dr. Gaul sees Snow’s ambition and pride and uses it to her advantage to exploit him as she sees potential in him for evil and it can even said that she sees herself in young Coriolanus. I think realistically for such a dystopian world, after everything Coryo has heard, seen and been through it probably isn’t surprising that he turns out the way he does but it is disappointing because in the beginning he wasn’t so evil, he showed us glimpses of goodness and what could of been had he been mentally stronger.

- A driving force that comes with Coryo is his family. When you learn of his family situation you find that they are poor despite appearances and Coryo is desperate to fix this and live through his father’s legacy. This is where his faults leak though as a lot of his choices are for his family in his mind even though they are seen as wrong or immoral.

- As the story continues we see that Coryo’s ambitions and pride seem to control him as he cares more for wealth and his reputation rather than caring for others or seeing other people as human, this is when he crosses the line into evil rather than staying good.

- When it comes to love, once again it comes down to potential. Coryo spoke kindly of his mother and despite the fact that he has clear trust issues I think that he was at one point he was capable of some sort of level of love, both him and Lucy Gray have there moments with each other and in the book he states that he “felt remarkably close” and that he was “genuinely fond” of her quite early on even almost crying with her the night before the games (which shows a level of empathy and compassion) and the fact that the both of them believe that their ‘love’ was written in the stars.

- People underestimate how powerful of a feeling love truly is. It’s such a powerful emotion that can make us feel and do a number of things for those we care for. I’d like to believe after analysing Coryo’s monologue regarding Lucy Gray that he did love her, at least to the best of his capability. I saw a post online that I believe sums up Coryo and Lucy’s dynamic and it’s that love doesn’t always display itself as positive. Love can sometimes be unhealthy and toxic but it doesn’t mean that the couple don’t feel deeply for one another. Coryo and Lucy Gray’s love wasn’t exactly the picture of the perfect relationship, that’s impossible in such a dystopian world but that’s not to say that they didn’t feel something for one another especially after everything they had been through, it was just that both of their need for different things and self preservation was the stronger emotion.

- At the end of the book it’s Coriolanus paranoia that wins in the end and shows us truly the beginning of his evilness and his descent into controlled madness. We see exactly when ambition, pride and wealth become more important to him than being with Lucy Gray. He sees an opportunity to get his life back in the capitol and takes it without even considering his feelings for his lover and what she would wants. It’s about him and him only.

- Although it is important to note that Lucy Gray is isn’t innocent as it seems on the surface. She will do what needs to be done to survive and protect herself, similarly to how Snow protects himself. She Strikes Snow with a snake while attempting to escape but also taunts him with the music he learned to love from her making him slide deeper into hatred, anger and paranoia. Lucy Gray is also described as clever and devious, showing the reader that her innocence and charm is only part of her. Snow may be a villain but I would consider Lucy Gray as an anti hero. She’s a relatable and likeable character in comparison to who Snow becomes but it obvious at the end that it’s impossible to retain your innocence and all levels goodness (this isn’t me saying that you can’t be good, just that you aren’t as pure as you are when born) in a world like Panem and The Hunger games. You do what you have to do survive.

- It can be considered debatable on if Coriolanus is a prime example of nature vs nurture.

- I do feel sorry for Tigris because she had so much hope for Coryo and he left her with so much to deal with in regards to their family and although Coryo does become successful and money is no longer as issue Tigris can see that Coryo has lost his way and has changed which upsets her deeply.

- Last but definitely not least I want to mention the scene with Reaper and the Capitol flag. It definitely had more of an impact visually and I’m glad that they kept it in the film.

stumbled across a ballad of songbirds and snakes critique video and I couldn't even watch it because the person so did not get what the book was doing and saying and the comments were complaining about the unnecessary romance when it's super obvious it's not intended to be a romance. suzanne collins is, yet again, ahead of her time because I remember the hate mockingjay got when it came out for killing prim and having katniss vote for new hunger games when those plot points are crucial and are meant to act as a commentary

Suzanne Collins is one of the few contemporary writers who realizes the importance of names in her stories and the significance they bear. They add so many layers to the story, additional meanings that otherwise would not have existed.

The original trilogy:

Katniss: named after a plant of which you can eat the roots. Her father taught her where to find it and told her that “as long as you can find yourself, you’ll survive” (quote may be a little bit off, but it’s from one of the early chapters in THG). Additionally, the leaves are in the shape of an arrowhead, referencing her skills with the bow which her father also taught her how to use.

Peeta: literally bread lmao. But bread is one of the basic nutritions humans need, a little bit goes a long way to keep you alive. Peeta’s presence in Katniss’s life also kept her alive, literally and figuratively—the burned bread he threw her in the flashback and their complicated relationship.

Primrose: a plant with medicinal purposes, even more significant in light of her work as a medic in Mockingjay.

Gale: literally means “strong wind” and considering that in every encounter with Katniss he’s caused some reaction, he pulls her into directions she maybe initially doesn’t want to go in. Additionally, his name also represents his determination and steadfastness in his beliefs.

TBOSAS

Lucy Gray: named after William Wordsworth’s poem “Lucy Gray” which is about the titular character of the poem who got lost during a blizzard. She literally got lost in snow. Rachel Zegler sang this poem in two parts on the original soundtrack of the movie. When Snow asked who the girl in the song is, Lucy answers that she’s a mystery, just like her.

Snow: aside from the obvious snow references, I think his name is most significant in relation to Lucy and the poem. The only one who knows what caused her disappearance is Snow. He is the reason that Lucy is gone. But her traces in the snow are still visible. He will always remember her because the memory of Lucy has manifested itself in every part of his life.

Coriolanus: named after the Roman general (and also the titular character of Shakespeare’s play), Coriolanus wanted to attack Rome and become its ruler. He was scorned and celebrated by the people, only to be later exiled from the city by them. In TBOSAS, Coriolanus is the star pupil at the Capitol’s academy but sent into exile to the districts after he won the Games with Lucy through cheating.

Volumnia: Coriolanus mother who played a part in his ascent to power. In TBOSAS, she almost serves like a mentor to Coriolanus, teaching him how to think in terms of power.

(Edit) Sejanus: a roman soldier who was betrayed by the roman emperor Tiberius, just like the future president betrayed him.

(Edit) Plinth: got this info from here, but it was too good not to include here. A plinth is a base for a statue or vase to stand on. After Sejanus’s death, all of the Plinth fortune was given to Snow for being such a good to friend him. It was this money that skyrocketed the Snow family from poverty to filthy rich. The Plinth money was the foundation upon which Snow built his power.

There are so many other names that have historical (mostly Roman and Greek) connotations—Plutarch, Seneca, Cinna—but also regular names like Trinket and Beetee bear meanings that represent the character beautifully.

Names are important. For any lover of literature or (aspiring) writers, please look closely at them. They can shape your story into something unique.

Arián es un ilustrador del norte argentino que saca inspiración de videojuegos y medios de terror. Estudió diseño gráfico por 3-4 años y es un artista autodidacta desde su adolescencia. El juego que lo envió a perseguir el sueño de convertirse en un artista conceptual para videojuegos es Journey, y los que lo impulsaron son Spiritfarer, la saga Uncharted y la trilogía de Dark Souls, especialmente su segunda instalación. But then she remembers the ring Gina wears on her ring finger to every game, and forces herself to return to the present and leave the past in the past. She finds it cruel that Gina’s family loves her more than Gina's new fiancé, that they still invite her to their house where they have photos of the two of them playing games together, at family gatherings, at parties and even Christmas. She never finds the courage to tell them to forget about her so she can move on from her; the Zelarayán household is her house far from her real home, back in Jujuy.

i have some thoughts on zar’s exit from the fandom & their decision to delete their fics and how the fandom is reacting to that. and the fandom is reacting horribly.

and the irony of it all! because, arguably, crimson rivers is what zar is most known for. crimson rivers, set in the hunger games universe, created by suzanne collins to criticize capitalism, the entertainment industry, and consumerism patterns of offered media and how it varies based on a social class. and zar’s work added so much nuance to what suzanne collins had written. zar had done an excellent job writing james, sirius, and regulus as victors and exploring their respective traumas when it comes to being in the public eye.

regulus (and james, too) constantly felt like he had no autonomy and no choice because he was thrust into the public light and pressured into doing exactly what was expected of him. and sirius? oh, sirius. sirius won his games and was made into this galaxy-sized celebrity by the hallows, expected to conform to every assumption made about him, to follow all the rules his new role as a mentor & a victor burdened him with. but most importantly—the hallows viewed sirius as nothing more than what he could offer to them. they looked at him and did not see the person.

zar wrote that, and tens-hundreds of thousands people read it and completely misunderstood. because zar wrote 865k words exploring how traumatizing it is to be made into an Image, to be stripped away of your autonomy for the sake of entertaining others. zar wrote that, only for the marauders fandom to do the exact same thing to them that the hallows did to sirius, to regulus, to james; to victors.

and that. that is fucking infuriating.

because, yes, zar is a brilliant writer, but first and foremost, zar is a person. and the way a large part of the fandom has been treating them is completely dehumanizing.

STOP saying “i respect/support zar’s decision but [insert a paragraph about how devastated you are and how you cannot stop crying]”.

STOP sharing the pdfs/epubs of his fics on literally all social media platforms when it’s the one thing zar explicitly asked people to not do.

STOP feeling entitled to the creative work that does not the fuck belong to you. STOP thinking that you have any right to demand anything from zar. STOP hiding emotional manipulation in-between words of illusory support and respect.

and to quote zar: for fuck’s sake, STOP calling them zeppazariel.

zeppazariel is a brilliant writer who was elevated within the fandom to a height so big that it hurts when you fall and crash, and the fandom pushed zar down. the marauders fandom made zar into a full-blown celebrity, but

zar is a person.

This quote of Coriolanus about Sejanus: “So sad, thought Coriolanus. To have no friends.” Pisses me off SO bad, because he’s right! Sejanus had no friends, but him!!!

Having to imagine that the only person you trust, the sole friend you have, thinks the absolute worst about you, makes my stomach turn. This is why I think Suzanne Collins is an absolute genius; her portrayal of a villain is exceptional, unlike many other writers' attempts, as it truly embodies the blueprint of an actual villain—or rather, the story of how he becomes one.
