Yeah, absolutely!

This comes in stages, ngl. Stage one being that Lola Kirke and Peter Dreimanis are both incredibly talented and gorgeous, and I lowkey highkey fell in love with both of them almost as bad as I did Jack-as-Remmick. (I listen to way too much of his music now. No shame in my game.)

Stage two being that I didn't even think about them as characters until I did a deep dive one night. I read a few articles discussing how Ryan built them up as characters instead of just leaving them to be surface-level secondary-antagonists, and I took those crumbs and started asking a few too many questions that other interviews (I am struggling to find the link, but I will -- the other is Lola's red carpet interview) decided to confirm. (This is not to say that my fanon interpretation is in any way Ryan's vision -- we were left deliberately Not Knowing on a plethora of things because he wanted us to talk about them, consider them, and ultimately harken back to the tagline of the film -- We Are All Sinners.*)

Stage three: The Yao Interview. The concept that vampirism changes you, but not completely. The implication that, while early on it appears to be incredibly deliberate puppeteering on Remmick's part, by the time the I Am Your Way Out scene occurs (I will give you a precise timestamp when I get a copy of the steelbook in two weeks; roughly ~30 seconds to a minute of footage), it doesn't seem like he's really pulling strings. (Granted, he has so many more vampires to contend with. I see the argument from both sides, I really do.) Bert and Joan arrive with Stack and Mary -- both couples laughing and in constant contact with their partners. Especially -- and I am going to expand upon this in a separate post because answering your question and proposing my theories are separate things -- considering how we were introduced to them, Joan and Bert. They do not stop touching one another. They are tactile, intimate, exhibiting public affection as opposed to simply occupying the same space in turn. And I am Prince Stolas when it comes to subtext, show and tell, and authorial / creator intent. I know this was deliberate, I just do not precisely know how.

Stage four is technically stage three in the timeline of events: Lola's Tiktoks. The tweenager who used to parry between heroism and villainy for Victor Creed is still alive and well in me, and when I get a crumb of tragic backstory, I whittle away at it like I'm going to find the essence of the characters buried in there. I think about her as a developed character and start sincerely understanding why Remmick would run the risk of adding people he despised** to his ranks -- because they are wrong, horribly wrong, but that doesn't mean they have no path to redemption.

Stage two into three was when I actually started writing about them (albeit unpublished). You have to start with what you're given and work your way inward. Yes, they're villains, yes, they were terrible people -- are they still? Did sharing memories with a thirteen hundred year old vampire who likely witnessed the first colonization of his homeland, let alone all of the brutality and systemic, institutionalized violence perpetuated to that day after, shift anything? Did losing their child?

And, finally, stage five: Ultimately, because I am not Ryan Coogler, everything I do or write for them, or Remmick, or anyone else is going to be an AU***. As rooted in reality as I may try to make any single work, I am creating transformative art of another person's vision. I am choosing to see the good in fatally flawed characters for narrative purposes. It may not hold water for you, and that's okay. But I'm still going to do it.

I would end this with I hope you don't think less of me for it, but that is beyond my control. I am shoving guilt in a trunk and padlocking it shut; I love you, but I don't have to prostrate myself for the right to pretend. I hope you'll join me on the journey anyway.

How to build the tab navigation
