Now all I'm thinking about coming home to hearing the shower running, so you go to see your boyfriend. You sit on the counter and just talk to him, because you've done the shower sex song and dance and sure shuji likes his showers hotter than most men, you find it's still a cold experience pressed against the wall...

Anyway, you're sitting on the counter in the steam of the room enjoying the calming scent of the blend of musk-sandalwoody-pine something or other of shuji's bodywash. You're asking about his day, glancing at the curtain to see him carelessly scrubbing his scalp, wet hair flopping about and you passively note his long black roots, something to tease him about later. You're happy because he seems in good spirits after a relatively calm day.

I'm thinking about how when he comes out, towel on his hips, he looks to the mirror and you block his view. He moves to look around you but you block him again and he scrunches his nose, picked up on your game. "Ya think you're so cute don'cha?" he snickers and pulls you into a wet hug that on another day might have annoyed you. Today, though, you huged him back. Tighter. And when he laughed and gently tugged away, you pulled him back and countered by wrapping your legs around him, face shoved in the crook of his neck where you inhale a mix of his soap and his last cigarette and everything is...perfect.

Drama Rec: Let's Talk About Chu

And my love affair with Taiwanese dramas continues. What better show to watch after the hilarious I Am Married...But! than Let's Talk About Chu (LTAC), a sex dramedy that offers a refreshingly frank and unpretentious examination of what makes relationships meaningful in today's disconnected world.

Plot-wise, the show follows the Chus, a tight-knit family who happen to have one thing in common: they're all sexually (and romantically) frustrated. The mother and father have a deeply resentful relationship made worse by its lack of sex. The oldest sister yearns for the emotional and sexual connection she used to share with her husband, whom she had a torrid affair with back when she was his student at university. The middle son is stuck in an unsatisfying relationship with a boyfriend whose lifestyle is incompatible with his own--and in more ways than one. The youngest sister, a wannabe sex education influencer, masks her insecurities about relationships by trying to maintain a strict separation between her sex and love life.

And then there's sex. Lots of it.

But what makes LTAC unique is how the show uses sex as a vehicle for deeper character work and social commentary. Through parallel storytelling, each episode uses its characters' sexcapades as a metaphor for the importance of intimacy and being able to understand and communicate one's needs inside and outside the bedroom. It's sex positive and provides audiences a lighthearted but deft take on taboo topics like STDs, infidelity, polyamory, impotency, etc. Because of this, it's one of those rare ensemble dramas where each relationship is interesting and poignant. It's never just about sex and at the same it is.

Final Verdict: Well written and acted, LTAC is an easy watch that still manages to be insightful and touching. Tired of shows that moralize and/or downplay the importance of sex? This might be the one for you.

Side Note: Although the show is realistic in its tone, some of the sex scenes are decidedly not (where's the lube and foreplay, y'all?). However, one scene had me cackling at 3:00am in the morning because it was so delightfully out of pocket--I thought Japan had cornered the market on scenes like that--but also kind of sweet?

As usual, TWdramas inviting the full spectrum of emotions lol

Okay, random, but these thoughts are legit keeping me up at night. Do you think Shuji has bad eye sight?

In my professional (self indulgent) opinion....

His eyesight is mostly fine but he dabbles in fake glasses for aesthetics later in his twenties or to tease people (hello im looking at my fellow four eyed girlies... and kisaki) but when he needs cheaters one day he NEVER has them. EVER. you've bought him tens of them istg.

If this is bc of the one promotional image where hes feeling himself in those thick plastic rimmed glasses? Because i think he teased kisaki and just loved the look and probably lied to a girl who was tutoring him through the ged he never finished. Who can resist his shit eating grin looking at you through cheap plastic?????

Yeah, it's an actual game in the works, the first fully functional piñata with all the mechanics (visiting, residenting, romancing) is planned for the latest update for the end of August to introduce the actual start of in-game progression and have the blueprint down for the rest of the piñatas :3 So folks can test it and find whatever bugs may pop up

on twitter here and here, forayuarchive has been talking about how LLH & FDB really act like an old married couple, and i couldn't stop thinking about it too. as a native chinese speaker, the level of informality, familiarity and bickering, in how FDB and LLH speak to one another (especially in the later episodes) are reminiscent of how bickering old married chinese couples are often depicted.

when FDB is angry/upset at LLH, he calls him "死莲花" - "Damn Lotus/Damn Lianhua". the way FDB says it is in a manner where you might imagine old spouses scolding one another when nagging/bickering (to clarify, it's not romantic per se, but it's extremely informal & familiar).

for example, in ep 35, FDB calls him Damn Lotus in the note he left LLH when he went to look for the styx flower. CN fanghua fans on weibo managed to painstakingly transcribe the note (see forayuarchive's tweet about it here with the eng translation) - it's extremely informal and reads like a short note a spouse/partner would write when leaving their shared home in a hurry.

i also still can't believe LLH calls FDB "xiaobao", it speaks for itself. 小宝 Xiao Bao (literal meaning is "little treasure") is usually something you call literal babies/children AND is FDB's family nickname for him so if you're calling a grown man that in front of his parents and his colleagues and strangers and literally everyone, then he's either your biological family or he's your bf/partner. (it's a level of intimacy that would make me feel embarrassed as a third party hearing LLH call FDB that in front of everyone😭)

and not to mention the deleted line of FDB calling a sick/unconscious LLH "xiaohua'er". (see video & meta of the deleted line by forayuarchive here, translation of the deleted line by ttiesanjiao here). xiaohua'er is so intimate, definitely something one might call a lover 😭

in any case these are NOT what a disciple calls his shifu or a son calls his dad. these nicknames are far too informal and familiar - no son talks to his father like that and no disciple talks to his shifu like that. (now, an angry spouse however...)

(there's also the fact that FDB explicitly rejects their relationship as being anything other than that between 2 adult equals - when LLH jokes that FDB should bow to him as disciple, FDB immediately rejects the idea, saying that he was only joking about wanting to be LLH's disciple, that FDB is too old now. he firmly sees himself as an adult equal to LLH.)

tl;dr within months of knowing each other, LLH & FDB act as familiar as an old couple 10 years married, skipping the entire courtship stage 😭
