365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
Supporting Character Supplemental - still more fun supporting characters
Following the jump are a few more supporting players that I couldn’t fit into the schedule in that the idea for extended cast supplementals was an idea that came to me late in the process.  Apologies in advance for all of the cool supporting cast members who are not included.
Tumblr media
Stick
The enigmatic warrior and sensei known only as Stick was born blind, yet honed his other senses to such an uncanny degree as to entirely compensate for his lack of sight.  He was taken in and raised by the shadowy order of warriors known as the Chaste who believed Stick to be the reincarnation of Yamato-Take.
The Chaset had been in a centuries-long war with The Hand and Stick was selected to lead The Chaste in this ongoing conflict.
He received extensive training throughout his life, including tutelage in the mystic arts by The Ancient One (the then Sorcerer Supreme).  Having become a master of multiple forms of martial arts and mystical practices, Stick set about recruiting and training new warriors to bolster the ranks of The Chaste.  Among these students had been Matt Murdock whom Stick sought out not long after Matt had lost his sight.  Stick helped Matt utilize his hearing and special radar senses to compensate for his blindness, aiding him on his path to becoming the superhero known as Daredevil.
A later pupil of Stick was Electra who ultimately turned away from him to become an assassin for The Hand.  After Elektra was killed in battle against Bullseye, Stick sacrificed himself, using his life energy to bring Electra back to life and purge her of the evil influence of The Hand.  Although Stick was later himself resurrected by the cosmic entity known as The Grandmaster.  Actor Terrance Stamp portrayed Sick in the Sony Films movie, Electra; whereas actor Scott Glenn portrayed the character in the MCU Netflix television shows.  The blind sensei first appeared in the pages of Daredevil Vol. 1 #176 (1981
Tumblr media
Wendy Kawasaki
Wendy had been a student who asked Captain Marvel for an interview as part of her research.   Marvel was so impressed by Wendy that she hired the young woman on to act as a personal assistant.
Wendy would later join the Alpha Flight Space program.  She earned the rank of lieutenant and has more recently been appointed commander of the program.
The character first appeared in the pages of Captain Marvel Vol. 7 #9 (2013).
Tumblr media
Ganke Lee
Ganke Lee is the best friend of Miles Morales, and one of the only people whom Miles had shared his secret with. It was Ganke who figured out that Miles carried similar abilities to Spider-Man. He was first alerted to his friend's newfound powers when Miles came bursting into his room and explaining the events that transpired to give him such abilities.
Thrilled at Miles's ‘cool’ powers and making the initial assessment that he was a Mutant, Ganke made suggestions that he should be a superhero and embrace his abilities; though Miles was much more reluctant to use his powers and wanted to ignore them in pursuit of a normal life. Ganke later made the correct deduction that Miles's abilities were not a product of the X-Gene, but as a result of tampered genetics.
Following the Secret Wars event wherein the Ultimate Universe was destroyed, The Molecule Man recreated Ganke in the 616 Universe as a favor to Miles who had shown him kindness during the ordeal.
Actor Jacob Batalon portrays a version of Ganke (renamed Ned) in the MCU Spider-man movies.  The character first appeared in the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 3 #2 (2011).
Tumblr media
Moira MacTaggert
Doctor Moira MacTaggert had been a brilliant geneticist, medical doctor and researcher who became a staunch alley to the X-Men and Mutant rights all over the world.  Based on Muir Island, MacTaggart was at the forefront of trying to find a cure for the terrible Legacy Virus.
She was later revealed to be a Mutant herself who possessed the capacity to recall the events of her life across a near countless spectrum of alternate realities.  She used this knowledge to guide the Mutant race so to avoid extinction events and establish the Mutant nation of Krakoa.  Yet the emotional toll of having experienced and being able to recall her own death across some many different time lines ultimately drove her mad and she became evil.
Actress Rose Byrne portrayed MacTaggert in the Fox Films X-Men movies.  Moira MacTaggert first appeared in the pages of Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #96 (1975).
Tumblr media
Roz Solomon
Agent Roz Solomon served as a member of SHIELD in the organization’s environmental sciences division.  A staunch environmentalist, Solomon investigated an illegal oceanic drilling practice conducted by the Roxxan Oil Corporation and ended up sharing an adventure with the Mighty Thor.  Following the dissuasion of SHIELD, Solomon accepted an offer by King T’Challa to become a part of his Agents of Wakanda program.  The intrepid young agent first appeared in the pages of Thor: God of Thunder #12 (2013).
Tumblr media
Telekinian
Ian Soo.  A latent Inhuman who gained his powers by way of exposure to the Terrigen Cloud.  Terrigenesis did not alter Ian’s physical form and endowed him with telekinetic powers, the ability to lift and manipulate objects with the power of his mind.  The upper limits of Ian’s telekinetic abilities has yet to be revealed.  Ian was living in New York City when he was bestowed his powers.  He had recently lost his job and apartment and was having terribly difficult time finding new employment.  Desperate, Ian chose to use his newfound powers to rob an armored car.  Brand new to this would-be turn of becoming a super-villain, Ian chose the truly awful codename of ‘Telekinian.’
Ian’s attempt to rob this armored car was foiled by the hero Hellcat (Patsy Walker).  Rather than duking it out in typical fashion, Ian and Hellcat ended up bonding on their mutual love of musical theater.  Patsy convinced Ian to give up his villainous ways and the two became roommates and good friends.  On occasion, Ian would resume his guise as Telekinian to aided Hellcat in her heroic endeavors.
The hero first appeared in the pages of Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! #1 (2015).
Tumblr media
Leach
A toddler aged Morlock whose Mutant powers and attributes were active at birth.  Leach’s abilities act to nullify any other Mutant’s powers in his immediate vicinity.  He essentially takes away other Mutant’s powers, although these powers return once they are away from Leach’s vicinity.  Leach’s power-nullification abilities also work on some non-Mutant super powered beings and the reasons for this remains unknown.  Leach survived the Morlock massacre and currently resides at The Baxter Building as a member of The Richards’ Family and student of The Future Foundation.  Young Leach first appeared in the pages of Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #179 (1983).
Tumblr media
Artie
Arthur ‘Artie’ Maddicks’ Mutant powers manifested in childhood, leaving him mute and physically transformed in a fashion that his father found grotesque.  Although he had lost the capacity to speak aloud, Artie gained the power to tap into and project the thoughts of himself or other people.
Artie’s father had Hank McCoy abducted so to force the scientist to find a means of ‘curing’ his son’s mutation.  The ordeal resulted in tragedy and Artie’s father was killed.  Now orphaned, Artie was taken in by X-Factor were he became lifelong friends with fellow Mutant child, Leach.  He first appeared in the pages of X-Factor Vol. 1 #2 (1986).
Tumblr media
Swain
A latent Inhuman named Jovanna whose transformation was caused by exposure to the Terrigen Cloud.  Terrigenesis endowed Swain with psychic powers that enables her to read and control the emotions of others.  The transformation also left Swain with a reptilian-like tail.
Following her transformation, Swain accepted the invitation of asylum of New Attilan.  She was made the captain of the Royal Inhuman Vessel (or RIV), an enormous flying fortress that circumnavigates the globe following the Terrigen Cloud.  Swain’s central role aboard the RIV is to use her empathic powers so to maintain the wellbeing of Hub, the new Inhuman who was transformed into a powerful dynamo of unlimited energy.  Hub’s energies power the RIV, yet his transformation has caused him great pain and emotional duress.  Swain has used her powers to help Hub feel in control of his anxiety and the process of powering The RIV acts to quell his pain.
The intrepid NuHuman first appeared din the pages of All-New Inhumans #1 (2015).
Tumblr media
Nancy Whitehead and Mew

The unbeatably clever roommate first appeared in the pages of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol 1 #1 (2015).
Tumblr media
Dinah Soar
Much of Dinah Soar's history remains a mystery. However, during her long life, she came to live in Wisconsin where she was drawn to helping others despite her inability to communicate with others and many humans fearing her appearance.
Dinah Soar was one of a few individuals who answered Mr. Immortal's advertisement looking for costumed superheroes and became one of the founding members of the Great Lakes Avengers.  Sadly, Dinah was killed in action whist battling the villainous Maelstrom.
The mysterious heroine first appeared in the pages of West Coast Avengers Vol. 2 #46 (1989).
Tumblr media
Tyesha and Gabe Hillman
Tyesha Hillman is the fiancee and later wife to Aamir Khan, the brother of Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel).  Tyesha and Aamir later had a son whom they named Malik.  Her younger brother, Gabe is a classmate of Kamala and has acted as a member of the ‘Kamala Korps,’ a group of would-be crimefighters who stepped in to patrol the streets of Jersey City during a time in which Ms. Marvel was missing in action.
Actress Travina Springer portrayed Tyesha in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel; actor Jordan Preston Carter portrayed Gabe in this same series.  Tyesha first appeared in the pages of Ms. Marvel Vol. 4 #2 (2015); whereas gibe first appeared in Ms. Marvel Vol. 4 #5 (2016).
Tumblr media
Naja
Very little is known of the origins of the Inhuman hero known as Naja.  A latent Inhuman whose transformation was caused by way of exposure to the Terrigen Cloud.  Terrigenesis greatly altered Naja’s physical appearance, changing her into a reptilian form, with green scaled skin, clawed hands and feet, and a web-like membrane connecting from her wrists to her lower trunk that allows for glide-based flight.    Along with these physical changes, Naja also gained greatly enhanced dexterity, strength and durability, the aforementioned flight, as well as the capacity to alter the color of her scales so to blend in with her surroundings in a camouflage-style process.
The heroine first appeared in the pages of Inhuman (2014).
Tumblr media
Phat
William Reilly was a Mutant who possessed the ability to control and redistribute fatty deposits on his body.  This enabled him to increase his size, strength and durability.  He was recruited into the corporate iteration of X-Force and served as a member of the team under the alias of ‘Phat.’  He was later killed in action, although a portion of William’s lipid structure was saved by Doop who used it to create William’s ‘daughter’ BabyPhat.
The character first appeared in the pages of X-Force Vol. 1 #117 (2001).
Tumblr media
Grills
The friendly fellow affectionately known as Grills had been a neighbor of Hawkeye (Clint Barton) when the Avenger was living in an apartment building in the Bedford-Sty area of Brooklyn.  The two became pals and Hawkeye assisted Grils in tending to his aged father during Hurricane Sandy.
Unfortunately, being friends with superheroes can be a dangerous matter and Grills was sadly killed by the assassin known as The Clown.
A version of the character featured in the Disney+ series, Hawkeye portrayed by actor Clayton English.  Grills first appeared in the pages of Hawkeye Vol. 4 #1 (2012).

Collections from the Armory Arcana Vol. 1
Be it as a reward for aiding others, a prize plucked from the grasp of a defeated foe, or something discovered by chance in the ruins of an ancient civilization, the acquisition of magical arms and armor is always tantalizing to those who seek adventure. The prospect of uncovering their mysteries is thrilling, and the power attained is both tangible and immediate. This is made all the more so if the item is one of myth and legend, as now its next chapter is to be written with new hands.
This can also be something that brings apprehension. What if the item brings with it a terrible price, or some lasting misfortune? Not all tales end happily after all. Yet, fortune favors the bold, and safety begets no heroes. The life of the adventurer is one fraught with risks, what’s one more when it could unlock new opportunities?
Collected here are a selection of homebrew weapons, armor, and other items that boast a myriad of strange and awesome powers, collected from my own homebrew D&D 5e games and adapted from games of editions past. I'll be making a few of these, so stay tuned and keep your eyes peeled for more to come!
Today's offerings:
Amulet of the Master Thief Wonderous Item, very rare (requires attunement by a rogue or bard) This deceptively simple looking amulet is a highly sought after treasure by those who find themselves in more thiefly trades. While attuned to this amulet you gain the following benefits while wearing it: A +1 to AC, advantage on Dexterity (Sleight of hand) and Thief’s Tools Proficiency checks, and immunity to the Hold Person Spell.
Armor of the Unknown Blade Armor (studded leather), legendary (requires attunement) Created for an assassin of unparalleled skill, this suit of studded leather not only provides excellent protection, but fleet of foot. While attuned to this armor, you gain an additional +3 to your armor class. You can use a bonus action to activate the enchantments in the armor. If you do, the armor doubles your walking speed, and you do not provoke attacks of opportunity when passing other creatures. You may end the the effect without spending an action or bonus action. When the armor’s property has been used for a total of ten minutes, the magic ceases to function until you finish a long rest.
Astral Impact Weapon (light crossbow), rare This otherwise mundane looking crossbow has a silver bowstring that glints and glimmers like the thread that travelers of the Astral plane have bound to their bodies. On a critical hit, the target is knocked prone, and rendered unconscious for 1 round with no saving throw. While unconscious, the target is stricken with a vision of their soul leaving their body.
Balance Weapon (longsword), legendary (requires attunement) Also known as the Lawgiver, this longsword’s make is so ancient that even magic cannot fully determine its origin. However the markings upon it suggest that the blade was forged in service to a god of justice. Its effectiveness is dependent on the alignment of the wielder. If the wielder has an alignment of True Neutral, the sword gives a +0 to attack and damage rolls. If the wielder is Chaotic Neutral, the sword gives a + 1 to attack and damage rolls. If the wielder is Neutral Good or Evil, the sword gives a +2 to attack and damage rolls. If the wielder is Lawful Good, Neutral, or Evil, the sword grants a +3 to attack and damage rolls. Additionally the sword grants immunity from confusion, charm, and fear effects no matter the wielder's alignment.

Video
youtube
Bobby Explains... For all the people who have discovered me recently from the Never Get Ahead video currently posted on many blogs and on Youtube, here’s some facts you make be interested in:
1.  The video is from an unrehearsed live appearance on Chic-a-go-go in 1997 or 1998 (ten years ago, shit!). Chic-a-go-go is a brilliant children’s dance show on cable access here in Chicago; it’s sort of like American Bandstand or Soul Train, but for little kids. Every week there is a random collection of kids and parents dancing to pre-recorded tracks and usually there is a special guest from the independant music scene. The guest can be local or touring acts, ranging from totally obscure noise bands to bigger acts. There is no budget and no rehearsal; they usually shoot two or three episodes in about two hours. The host is a punk rock rat puppet named Ratso and his lovely partner, currently Miss Mia Park.
 2.  I was asked to do a tune, and as the song was Never Get Ahead, I re-cut the vocals to remove references to fellatio. It is a kids' show, after all. I recut the tune the night before and really didn’t have time to rehearse the lip sync. I figured my sync would be terrible, but didn’t care too much about fooling people into thinking it was live.
 3.  The original version of the tune is on my album Bobby Conn, available through Atavistic/Truckstop Records.  I think it is on iTunes, Amazon, etc. It’s my first album; please buy a copy as I haven’t seen any royalties from those people for a long time.  There is also a live version on my album Live Classics, Vol. 1 released on Thrill Jockey Records. It is considerably more rocking than the original, which may or may not be an improvement.
 4.  This video clip was voted Worst Video Ever in a VH1 contest and has been broadcast in the UK and Europe pretty consistently for the past ten years.
5.  The video was shot at 10am on a Saturday morning; I was not “coked out of my brain” as many people have suggested. If my performance seems exaggerated, well, perhaps you need to enjoy life a bit more.
6.  Micheal Jackson and motown are a huge inspiration for me, and I’m not embarassed to admit it. I’m not really ashamed of much, really.
 7.  The woman in the blue dress is my friend Emily; you can see clips of her playing bass in another tune on YouTube, Passover. The woman in the plaid skirt is Monica BouBou; you can see her in most of my videos as she has played violin with me for over ten years and is my partner in crime. I can guarantee any dude that is interested in Emily or anyone else in the video that they are not interested a scumbag like you. Everyone else in the video, all the kids, etc, are just random people who showed up that day. Obviously, many of them were confused by my antics.
8.  I am “for real.”  As in, I am a real person. Is my hair real in the video? Is that a measure of my integrity? These are all questions for you to think about, but frankly, I am amazed at how much people seem to care about these things. It’s a sign of progress that we have the time to debate such issues over the internet. I guess that means that the larger issues confronting humanity have been pretty much taken care of. Hallelujah!
9.  I have noticed that Americans have a harder time with sarcasm and irony that other cultures. We find sarcasm threatening in some way. I, on the other hand, find the emphasis on the illusion of integrity to be more frightening. The lyrics to the song both celebrate and mock political songwriting. The concept of 'the man' is a juvenile simplification of oppression. But the impulse behind it is still valid.
 10.  Finally, thanks for watching!  I am very proud of this video, as it captures almost everything I love in entertainment.  It is FUNNY, even ten years later!

ART BLANCHE: Bleachers
It started with a classic case of “pink hair, don’t care.”
Michelle Holme was working at RCA when the label received a handful of images from Jack Antonoff to be considered for the artwork for Bleachers’ record Strange Desires. As Michelle was looking over some of the options, a flash of pink caught her eye.
“[The project] was not really assigned to anyone, and Jack sent in a bunch of pictures, and I was like ‘Oh that’s fun.’ So I started comping for the single ‘I Wanna Get Better,’” Michelle said. “For this music, I was like ‘I think that maybe the back of this chick’s head will be better for this track’ and apparently Jack really dug that.”

With Jack’s seal of approval, Michelle then began working on the art for the rest of the singles as well as the album. Because she hadn’t been involved in the photoshoot process, her job was to curate the photos and lay out the covers in a way that kept the “same vibe throughout” all the different pieces.
“That was a fun project because...  you could just pull weird random things, and [while] more often than not it wouldn’t be the right thing, it got a good dialogue going of where [the art would] end up.”
Tumblr media
Bleachers - Strange Desire (Courtesy of Michelle Holme)
As exciting as the project was, it wasn’t until later that Michelle’s favorite part of it all happened.
“I really dug working on... Terrible Thrills, Vol. 2, where it was all women singing (the songs from Strange Desires),” Michelle said. “[Jack] wanted to do this [record], and I did a couple of cover comps for [it] and was like, ‘You know what would be kind of fun? Let’s replace you with a chick’ and that ended up being the cover.”
“And then we just had to find some, we had to take a second to look in images to find appropriate replacements for the other shots in the package. But that was kind of fun, I was like ‘Let’s literally replace you with a chick and see how it goes.’”

Michelle was also brought on to help design merch for Bleachers’ subsequent tour. In doing so, she and the band made sure that they didn’t stick to just the typical crop of screenprinted tees, but instead created a wide range of items that highlighted the band’s personality.
“The thing is, [Jack] wanted to do a lot of random, fun merch like the gold chain and a lot of the shirts. I assume there was little resistance… just because like ‘Oh it’s cut and sew it’s going to be expensive’ but everyone seems to really dig it,” Michelle said. “It’s not just like a printed tee, people do dig it and they wear it out in public and it’s good for the band. But that was fun because it was like different hats and sweatshirts and a bunch of different merch that was a bit more fun and silly than I’ve been able to do in the past.”
Tumblr media

Of all the merch, there was one item in particular that spoke directly to Michelle. She liked it so much that she was even inspired to try it out with one of her other regular clients.
“There were sunglasses! That was fun, that made me [think], ‘Let’s do sunglasses for Bruce!’ and then that came out interesting as well. ...But that’s also because I love sunglasses,’” she said. “...I still wear my samples around.”

Liberated Audio Reviews
Blake's 7 - The Liberator Chronicles Vol. 6
RELEASED OCTOBER 2013
Recorded on: 2, 10 and 30 October and 13 December 2012
Recorded at: Moat Studios
Review By Robert L. Torres
Tumblr media
Incentive by Peter Anghelides
'The Liberator crew are recovering from a Galactic War and searching for their lost members Blake and Jenna. But it’s a search that leads them into terrible danger…'
Because this story marks the return of Steven Pacey to the role of Del Tarrant, I think it is best that I get my views on the character out of my system before getting to the rest of the review.
Honestly.... Out of the main characters that have come and gone on the show during its four season run, there are two that I do not count as my favorites.
The first is Soolin, largely due to how bland and one note the character was compared to the character she was brought on to replace in Series D... Cally.
The other character is Del Tarrant, and I shall endeavor to explain why I dislike him despite Steven Pacey's fine performance.
From the first moment he appeared on the show, there was something about him that just rubbed me the wrong way. For years I knew it was the character himself that seemed like the problem... But I could never work out why.
This story finally brought to light why I disliked Tarrant's character. He was a young, cocky, hot shot with loyalties only to himself... Basically a less charming and less endearing version of Star Lord. He was impatient, brash, and only seemed to be throwing in his lot with the resistance for no other reason than for fame and glory.
In addition, Tarrant seemed to go out of his way to get under everyone's skin (or rather just Avon's), and always bristled under Avon's command.
I understand that with Gareth Thomas having left the series, they needed to create a new character to go up against Avon on the decision making, much in the same way Avon used to butt heads with Blake. Except the dynamic between Avon and Tarrant, from what I remember, was different and far more antagonistic than it was between Blake and Avon. Avon was an Alpha dog, but Tarrant was also an Alpha dog. This is probably why most of their disagreements, from what I remember, tended to come across like dick wagging contests.
It has been a while since I saw the series proper, but there are only two things of any significance regarding Tarrant that I remember. The first was the Series C episode 'Death Watch', which I think involved his twin brother Deeta. The other was the episode 'Sand' from Series D, which involved him and Servalan being trapped on a planet together... Having conjugal relations.
While the character of Del Tarrant isn't my favorite, Anghelides does a pretty good job of at least attempting to shed a bit of light on his character. This is accomplished by focusing on his desperate desire to stand out from the crowd and make a name for himself on par with the legendary Blake and Jenna.
The story begins not long after Tarrant and Dayna have officially joined the crew. During their latest attempt to locate Blake and Jenna, Tarrant and Avon are captured and interrogated while strapped to an electro-shock lie detector. This dual focused narrative split is in itself a pretty interesting dig at unreliable narratives, especially given that both Tarrant and Avon receive electro shocks whenever they aren't being completely truthful in their recollections.
By the way, kudos to Adrian Lukis for his exquisite portrayal of Interrogator Bracheeni. The scenes that featured him interacting with Tarrant and Avon were actually some of the best parts of the story. The revelation of who and what Bracheeni is added a great deal to the narrative, especially in providing an explanation as to why the Liberator crew had to abandon the search for Blake and Jenna.
All things considered, it is nice to get an actual in-universe explanation as opposed to what actually happened: the plot thread being dropped without explanation, forcing viewers to accept the fact that Blake and Jenna weren't coming back... Ever.
While there are some interesting ideas and set ups featured in the story, the narrated recollections are not really that engaging. In addition, my problem with this story is the same problem I had with Volume Three's 'Armageddon Storm'. Its a narrated story that should have been done as a full cast audio.
Final Score: 6 out of 10 Plasma Bolts
As it stands, this story does its job of filling an hour and retroactively provides answers to lingering questions, thus making it essential. However, this is marred by being an uneven story that is only half engaging.
Jenna's Story by Steve Lyons
'Jenna's story is finally told - from her escape from the Liberator during the Galactic War, to her determination to continue the fight against the Federation alone… with the odds stacked against her.'
When Big Finish Productions obtained the rights to produce new stories set within Series A through C of Blake's 7, this not only opened up story avenues to provide greater focus stories for many of its characters, but also an opportunity to fill in a couple of gaps in the narrative.
While 'Incentive' was an uneven story, it still managed to do what the show itself was unable or unwilling to do at the time: explain why the Liberator crew abandoned their search for Blake and Jenna.
Answering lingering questions seems to be this boxset's central theme as the next two stories are focused on what happened to the characters that literally jumped ship at the end of Series B, Jenna and Blake.
According to dialogue spoken by Cally in early Series C, it was always assumed that Jenna was with Blake when they abandoned ship during the Galactic War. It was also naturally assumed that Jenna had been with Blake the whole time during Series C and D.
Turns out that wasn't the case at all... Which actually works to the benefit of this story and the next.
Here, Jenna recounts how she spent her time surviving and fighting during the events of Series C and leading into Series D. It provides Sally Knyvette with great material and also serves as a reminder of what made me, personally, fall out of love with the series during Series D... Particularly with the way the series ended.
Let me be clear, as much I personally didn't like not having Blake and Jenna around on the show anymore, Steve Lyons managed to craft an exceptional Jenna-centric story that absolutely had to be told. This story, as well as the next one, managed to do a much better job implementing the central themes of what was meant to be on display during Series C and particularly during Series D: how the crusade that Blake started with hope and optimism slowly but surely devolved into cynicism, suspicion, self-interest and ultimately self-destruction.
This is highlighted well during Jenna's dealings with Correll, played by John Banks, and his disrespectfully dismissive attitude towards people with 'noble causes', his derogatory disbelief in 'heroes', as well as his overriding, self-serving self-interest.
Kudos to Banks for portraying someone that's basically an unlikeable, selfish jerk without becoming despicable.
The crux and climax of the story is based on a line of dialogue Blake tells Tarrant during the series finale regarding Jenna's ultimate fate. While the moment itself is thrilling and well executed, I had hoped that it was a lie as part of Blake's test or something. Still, what was crafted here is suitably tragic as it showcases the depths of Jenna's devotion, and even her love, for Blake.
The ultimate tragedy being that, in the end, she never did get to tell Blake how she felt about him... and how much he meant to her.
Final Score: 10 out of 10 Plasma Bolts
A superbly satisfying sendoff and sublime swansong for Sally's Stannis!
Blake's Story by Mark Wright and Cavan Scott
'Blake's story is finally told - from his escape from the Liberator during the Galactic War, to his new life as a troubled, scarred man on a distant rebel world…'
Before getting into the review, I have to state that while I understand the reasons why Gareth Thomas and Sally Knyvette left the show at the end of Series B, it is my opinion that the show lost quite a bit of its inherent identity once Blake and Jenna were gone.
While many contend that promoting the late Paul Darrow to lead actor was the creative booster shot the show needed, there is a reason the show was still called Blake's 7 and not Avon's 7.
No matter who is given the spotlight and focus, Blake's presence is still very embedded within the show's DNA. Despite his absence, Blake's influence is still keenly felt by those that inhabit this fictional universe... Both directly and indirectly.
While the storytelling avenues may have opened up for the rest of the cast, the audience would still inevitably wonder, 'Where the hell is Blake? When is he coming back?' Largely because the audience was still interested in seeing Blake's story continue.
Both Gareth Thomas and Chris Boucher no doubt understood this to be absolutely true. As long as the Roj Blake character remained alive, but missing from a show that bared his character's name, then Gareth Thomas would not have been able to truly move forward in his career.
Which is why its no surprise that the most memorable moment in the entire series came about at Thomas' insistence.
But this isn't about how Blake's story ends... Its about the circumstances Blake experienced during Series C and D that led to his ultimate fate on Gauda Prime. And I am pleased to say that Wright and Scott do an excellent job filling in the blanks of Blake's journey.
From landing on the planet Epheron in his escape pod, to attempting to reunite with the Liberator (which includes Blake visiting the planet Shorlan post-Armageddon Storm), to being captured, tortured and accused of treachery by the Resistance (thus explaining the scar over his eye he displayed in the series finale), its all presented here brilliantly. I also appreciate how engaging these moments are, and aren't treated as plot points to check off.
The late Gareth Thomas really did a great job with this material, displaying the same charisma and intensity he had shown throughout his tenure on the show, which is doubly unfortunate that he had opted out after Series B.
The framing device utilized for Blake recounting events is brilliant, and the twist reveal is actually rather clever... If a little unsurprising. However, it serves the narrative well as it goes to the heart of the tragic and ironic inevitability that lies ahead for Blake, particularly in his connection to Avon.
Despite their disagreements and opposing ideals... And no matter how often Avon secretly wished to be rid of Blake... They still needed each other.
It often reminds me of why the Doctor chooses to travel with companions, the companions keep the Doctor grounded and keep the Doctor from going too far for the sake of selfish self interest and so on.
While neither one would ever admit it, Blake and Avon had the ability to keep each other in check. And even though Blake said at the end of 'Star One' and even near the end of this story that he always trusted Avon... Its only with the benefit of hindsight do we question whether or not that trust was warranted.
Final Score: 10 out of 10 Plasma Bolts
A truly satisfying sendoff for the original star of the show.
Final score for Volume 6 of the Liberator Chronicles, in its entirety, is 8 out of 10 Plasma Bolts.
This is an essential set of stories for longtime fans. Even though there are six more boxsets of stories left in the range, if the Liberator Chronicles audio range ended here, it would have ended on a major high note.
As an aside, while the next six boxsets have produced some outstanding stories, I personally feel that both 'Jenna's Story' and 'Blake's Story' should have been the stories utilized as the finale for the Liberator Chronicles range overall.

This is an interesting theory! I could see this happening much like how Bleachers did a re-recording of Strange Desires and named it Terrible Thrills, Vol. 2, featuring all female artists (!!!).
Tumblr media
For 1989, this could abosolutely be a show of solidarity! I'm also secretly hoping it happens so we have featured versions as well as solo versions.
Any theories for who would sing what? Someone in the thread mentioned Sara Bareilles doing Clean and I'm ALL for that!!! (could be fun considering Sara was featured on Terrible Thrills, Vol. 2 as well!)
Tumblr media
and just for kicks, here are my totally wack theories for either collabs or full covers (just entertain me for a minute. some of these are ultra mainstream selections but it could be fuuuun)
1 Welcome to New York - Tegan and Sara
2 Blank Space - Halsey
3 Style - Harry Styles
4 Out of the Woods - St. Vincent
5 All You Had to Do Was Stay - MUNA
6 Shake It Off - Charli XCX, Camila Cabello
7 I Wish You Would - Aly & AJ
8 Bad Blood - Katy Perry
9 Wildest Dreams - Florence + The Machine
10 How You Get the Girl - Hayley Kiyoko
11 This Love - Bon Iver
12 I Know Places - Hayley Kiyoko
13 Clean - Sara Bareilles
14 Wonderland - Olivia Rodrigo

LGBTQ Light Novel Review - Otherside Picnic Vol. 2
Tumblr media
I put off reviewing the second light novel in Iori Miyazawa’s horror science-fiction series, Otherside Picnic, on the sneaking suspicion that an anime adaptation would be announced. After seeing the short animated PV which released alongside Volume 4 in Japan and some suggestive Tweets by Shonen Gangan (the magazine where the manga adaptation is serialized), I was almost certain it was inevitable. Lo and behold, my suspicions were correct, and now we have an upcoming TV adaptation to look forward to directed by none other than Satou Takuya, perhaps the most qualified director for this series with his experience in sci-fi (Steins;Gate) AND Yuri (Kase-san and Morning Glories). But the real reason I am so excited for the anime is that if it is at least half as weird, exciting, and enjoyable as the light novels, it will be very, very good.
Otherside Picnic Volume 2 is split into four chapters, or “files,” each of which presents a new adventure for surly and callous protagonist Sorawo and her friend Toriko. As I mentioned in my review of Volume 1, these files make for excellent and exciting self-contained adventures, with each one featuring a new creature from internet lore. However, Miyazawa’s well-constructed world and gradually paced story are incredible. The characters and the readers learn more about the world in a steady and gradual progression that builds on previous experiences. It is a welcome feature of this series, especially when compared with so many other light novels which too often treat time, character growth (both ability and personality-wise), and the world like a taught rubber band launched forward with inaccurate speed only to miss its target and strike the reader in the face. This progression features in a variety of ways, from the small, an artifact, or encounter from a previous story being referenced, to the practical, like Toriko and Sorawo adding a new assault rifle and vehicle to their arsenal, to the plot defining, like the soldiers from Volume 1.
The four files in this second volume vary dramatically in tone and, unfortunately, quality. The first, “The Operation to Rescue the U.S. Forces at Kisaragi Station,” and the fourth, “Little Bird in a Box,” are the best of the volume. The former of these two sees Sorawo and Toriko join the military forces they found stranded in the other world in Volume 1. Together, they wage an epic battle against the mysterious and dangerous forces of the parallel world to get the soldiers out alive. Not only was this scene incredibly intense and well written, but it also helped readers learn more about Sorawo, and helped layer her as more than just a cold and curt girl as she first presented. These developments are also furthered in the volume’s final chapter, which expands Otherside Picnic’s world greatly, as DS, the mysterious organization which funds research on the other world, is revealed.
The light novel’s middle chapters are by no means terrible, but they are not as exciting or interesting as the ones mentioned above. One of them sees Sorawo and Toriko go on a bender across Japan and the other side, which sounds hilarious, but the effect is quickly lost as it drags on a bit longer than needed. It feels more like a missed opportunity to deepen the relationship between the two. However, the third chapter, “Attack of the Ninja Cats,” succeeds significantly on this front. While the name and monsters for this chapter are ridiculous, and honestly create too much of a contrasting tone from the rest of the book, it does introduce a new side-character, whose presence subtly reveals the dependency and even lust Sorawo has for Toriko. The story accomplished this feat without feeling like an unhealthy and annoying jealousy story either, which is a tremendous feat.
There were also a few inconsistencies that bugged me, primarily in Sorawo’s financial situation. She is simultaneously presented as a broke college student and someone with the cash to go on a bender at a resort and buy a tobacco farming vehicle, which is repurposed for expeditions into the other world. However, such details only stand out because the rest of the world is so consistent and detailed. Miyazawa has created such a beautiful and vibrant world filled with so much mystery. Yet, the story still always focuses on Sorawo and Toriko’s relationship and adventures.
Speaking of the girls and their relationship, Otherside Picnic still has minimal fan service or action between them. However, it is unmistakably Yuri. Sorawo has a deep longing and a strong bond with Toriko, which sometimes expresses itself physically, with Sorawo always noting the beauty of her companion or the two women holding hands while recovering from a nearly lethal encounter. However, the Yuri is primarily present in the realism of their relationship, their conversations, sensibilities, and groundedness, which stands in contrast to the fantastic, and occasionally horrific events, of the science fiction narrative. In sci-fi Yuri such stories are sometimes described as “hard Yuri,” thanks to that convoluted and philosophical bastard Gengen Kusano (Last and First Idol). The core of the idea is making the relationship between the fictional characters a reality, or at least basing it in realism. Whether that “realism” includes lesbian identity is yet to be seen, but Miyazawa does have a good track record in that department with Side-by-Side Dreamers. In short, this is a long-winded way of warning you not to run around shouting “queerbaiting!” just yet.
Otherside Picnic Volume 2 is a fantastic read, thanks in no small part to Sean McCann’s translation. The adventures are fun, thrilling, occasionally terrifying, but most of all, consistently engaging. This series will undoubtedly make a fantastic and bizarre anime, so I cannot wait for the adaptation. I recommend that you do not delay either, and you go pick up this brilliant work of sci-fi Yuri literature today.
