4. What detail in [insert fic] are you really proud of?

10. How do you decide what to write?

I used to reliably write one fic per month, and that was decided by whatever idea nugget had captivated my brain most recently.

ever since I’ve broken into the landscape of ao3 exchanges, it’s decided by recent exchanges I might’ve signed up for or exquisite requests that have caught my eye.

30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?

glib answer: fluff is out of my comfort zone. anything calling for an unqualified uncomplicated happy ending… leads to me gnashing the end of an imaginary pencil going “but why is this so hard???” there’s no honour with fluff and no lessons learned, I just bounce at the earliest opportunity back to gestating dark wretched bonbons.

realistic answer: m/m. I used to have a disease called “I can only write fic from women or non-binary people or men of colour’s povs” (I don’t relate to people who think writing women is revulsively political because MEN who are the default in their societies fill that role for me instead and women are my comfort zone) and m/m was a huge leap… but it’ll get easier with practice, is what I tell myself! it has gotten easier.

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

I don’t think it’s underrated when you put the fandom into context, but I’m going to discuss the lightness of a foreign sky a second time [drumroll], specifically epigraphs/poetry, because I like the choice of poem I picked and more broadly the poet I looked up:

while looking for epigraphs/poems to crib titles from I rediscovered Alfian sa’at’s poetry. The Merlion, which the fic title is paraphrased from, is a nice wry ode to the diffusion of identity and rootlessness that doesn't side with the subject of that (privileged) rootlessness, exactly, but does do a nod to loss from the unsaid weathering of their sense of self. all of which I thought was somewhat fitting considering the OG book's subject matter, and so decided to put into conversation with it through my fic.

that aside, it's just a poem that manages to be irreverent and thoughtfully witty (the contemporary Chernobyl reference!) while staying lyrical:

"I wish it had paws," you said, "It's quite grotesque the way it is, you know, limbless; can you imagine it writhing in the water, like some post-Chernobyl nightmare? I mean, how does it move? Like a torpedo? Or does it shoulder itself against the currents, gnashing with frustration, its furious mane bleached the colour of a drowned sun? [...] What a riddle, this lesser brother of the Sphinx. What sibling polarity, how its sister's lips are sealed with self-knowledge and how its own jaws clamp open in self-doubt, still surprised after all these years."

the common online consensus among singaporeans (that I've observed, anyway) is that Crazy Rich Asians has gotten mixed receptions given its wild embellishments and setting inaccuracies (wrt the everyday lives of most of the singaporean populace, lol, not counting expat enclaves) -- and i think something like Alfian Sa'at's Void Deck is a great antidote to CRA's fictive luxury:

so: if I like something about this fic, I hope it's some sort of groundedness in... emotion, setting texture, and all that jazz.

45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?

answered—but I like to think (hope) that I’m better at writing lines that feel like an emotional gut punch or sharp insight, and including them in every other paragraph in fic so that the reader feels either like they’ve been walloped or sanctified (or left thinking "wtf? I'm never going to trust this person again") by the end.

Well since we've been in eachothers lives since the day we were born it kinda HAD to be a slow burn!

Min fell first and for me specifically when we were little kids before falling for Ryan too in middle school!

mahonia ⇢ what place, thing, activity inspires you most and how do you express yourself when it does?

my neighbourhood! + cycling through it! I'm always amazed how beautiful it actually is, being so close to such a huge river and being able to observe it's movement and how it shaped the nature around it is astonishing. I love sitting on the shore and observing Grey herons trying to catch fish, seeing small birds bathe in the shallow parts or an ocassional cat sunbathing on a rock, it's such an alive place. Being there inspires me to paint and write, those things will never be seen by others but to me it's my best work since it's done inthe moment.

sage ⇢ what ‘medium’ of art (poetry, music, fiction, paintings, statues etc.) is the most touching to you? why do you think that is?

Painting and music!

I played piano for years and it definitely shaped my love for instrumental/ classical music, it makes me feel alive.

Painting in the traditional sense is much newer to my life but i find it very relaxing and combined with good music can be very fun!

7. How many ideas for fics do you have right now?

Honestly hard to answer cause It’s hard for me to define what qualifies as one idea; some are well defined while some are just half formed thoughts 😅

I also don’t really keep track of them if I’m not actively working on them bc I just go ‘eh if it’s good I’ll remember it’ - which honestly has been working out for me, the only way I’ll get myself to write is if a story has me excited enough that it stays on my mind anyway, but that also means I don’t have an actual list lol

Anyway, if I go with the ones I can think of rn, maybe 4 are on the more well defined side? (I’m including my current wip for the last part of ‘Come a little closer’ and a vaderdala fic I’ve actually started working on in the count lol)

Plus (spoiler alert) I had an additional fic idea but I couldn’t quite put into words so I have decided to turn it into an illustration 👀 might be posting that in the future hehe

no I don't - I actually prefer hair claws to ties so I don't wear them often haha

Just read your iconic “Price hates corner of the mouth kisses” post, and it got me thinking?

How would Price react if he went in for a kiss and reader, just to be a tease, turned her head so he’d only get the corner of her mouth or her cheek?

I love teasing this man.

As to how he would react? Disbelief.

He’ll lean in and when you turn away, he pulls back, surprised and looking at you in confused disbelief. After all, this man absolutely thrives on your affection. Not showing it through physical actions such as kisses, hugs or his hand somewhere on you (waist, hip, shoulder, back, t h i g h) doesn’t even cross his mind.

But if he sees the little smirk on your face, realisation dawns on him.

Even though he knows you’re just teasing and being a little shit, there is the slightest hint of annoyance. After all, he wants that kiss.

He’ll give you a look, clearly conveying what he wants and lean in again, a slight warning in his eyes.

Let him kiss you, and he’s very happy, pressing an extra kiss to your mouth.

But. If you dare to lean away once more, his hand will shoot out and he’ll grip your chin, almost squishing your cheeks together as he turns your head to face him before pushing his lips onto yours.

Can’t decide if he’d make the kiss 10x more intense than he’d planned to - just to tease you back and show his displeasure - or press a light kiss like he was planning before, just to make a point. I can see both

firefighter!ace is unironically and blissfully unaware of the fact that he’s kind of Twitter/TikTok famous. Somebody happened to get a picture of him and a bunch of other first responders at an event and now he’s known on social media as ‘Firefighter Bae.’ Now he used it to his advantage to post workout vids, safety tips and humor about some of the things they encounter on the job.

firefighter!ace has a special lapel pin he always wears on his uniform or on his persons that he got from his crew mate, who passed in a fire years ago.

firefighter!ace has the HARDEST time letting the pets go from rescues. It can be someone’s dog with a whole name and address on the tag but he’s holding him like it’s his own.

“Are you sure we can’t keep him?” “Ace, give those people their dog so we can go!”

firefighter!ace adoresss kids! He’s always the first pick of the schools for fire safety day because he’s so charismatic and fun that the children just cling to him. Taking them on the fire truck, letting them wear the gear and even playing with them. He was such a natural, you became flustered and began to like him even more.

firefighter!ace gets along with all of your friends/roommates..a little too well in fact! Always going to Robin to snitch on you or Nami to gossip about how temperamental you are! But they adore him so much.

firefighter!ace likes to show off during workouts by letting you sit on his back as he does pushups. But he knows you’re no princess and he’ll eventually get challenged by you to see who can do the most. (Of course placing a small wager to sweeten the deal.)

New headcannon! In relation to this. If we took that as being something that could have happened with the same Cross and Dream from darkcream, my headcannon iss.

Cross never actually read Dream this letter, perhaps tried to throw it out, but Dream saved it. He later comes to realise it might have been some sort of love confession, based on context of what happens soon afterwards. But he still doesn't actually know what it actually says.

Only then years later, handing the letter back to Cross, to ask him to read it to him on there wedding night.
