I SPY Constellations!
This Volume 8 illustration is one of my favorites. Ignorance of physics aside, seeing the cast magically floating high above a brightly-lit festival, with stars in the background... it's beautiful!
The stars in particular are interesting; you can see the lines connecting them, forming constellations! So, I thought it might be fun to match them up.
Cygnus:
The first one I noticed was Cygnus, right by Nene's hand! It has the shape of a swan spreading its wings, and within it lies the Northern Cross asterism. The star near the tail feathers of the heron is Deneb, and is the top of the Northern Cross.
Lyra:
The companion to Cygnus is Lyra, which sort of resembles a harp, I guess! The brightest star in the constellation is Vega, a first-magnitude star and the fifth brightest star we can see in the night sky. You can see it represented by the giant yellow dot!
Aquila:
To the left of Kou's head is Aquila, the hawk! The full constellation isn't shown, but you can clearly see how the stars match up. The bright star at the bottom of the small triangle is Altair; together with Vega and Deneb, they make up the Summer Triangle asterism.
Summer Triangle:
This technically isn't a constellation, but it is important. It doesn't quite line up perfectly here but this is art, not a star chart! Accuracy is not wholly necessary!
Anyways, the three stars here are relevant to the Tanabata legend, which is also the festival the characters are celebrating! Vega is Orihime and Altair is Hikoboshi, who are two lovers that have been separated. Deneb represents the magpies creating a bridge over the milky way in order to let the two lovers meet. It's a bit complicated to explain, but here's a link to the wikipedia article!
Sagittarius:
Below the red Hakujoudai is the constellation of Sagittarius, which is supposed to be a naked centaur with a bow... somehow! It has a cool shape to it, even if it’s a bit abstract. Apparently, the bow is said to be aimed at Antares, the heart of the Scorpius constellation... hmm!
Andromeda:
The one right next to the Mokke is Andromeda! She’s a chained-up lady who became the wife of Perseus... or something. My friend said she looks like Amane falling down the stairs but I don't really see it. Maybe if I squint...
.. Sooo, how was it? Did you notice any constellations I missed, or do you think I got some wrong? Or maybe you have some crazy theory about how these constellations somehow explain the entire plot of Hanako-kun?! Whatever it is, let me know!
I hope you had fun reading. ☆
