Thoughts on the thunder wizard again.

Genuinely, I find Gale's relationship with Mystra to be fascinating when you consider all its facets. Unhealthy, imbalanced, definitely poisonous, but also very, very intricate with a lot of blurred edges to it. One of those things where you're both like "wow, what the hell, that's horrible" but also "that makes perfect sense for their characters, and while I would NEVER, I know why they would, and why it happened."

You've got a wizard who doesn't know what real love is, who thinks he's finally being shown it by the person he adores most. His greatest fantasy, his most potent joy, his most heartfelt aspirations, and they were all offered to him.

And he wants to see what all she's hiding from him, because of course he does. She's the keeper of all things forbidden to him. The empire of Netheril reached magical heights that will never be touched again, and all that knowledge is beyond her curtain. She loves him, right? Surely, if he proves himself enough, she'll let him grasp that power he so desperately wants.

And not even in the power-hungry sense! All that magic Mystra's locked up was accessible during Mystryl's reign. Think of all the answers to theories about the universe that are back there. Every question of "can this be done, and what would it do" would be answered, if he could just bargain hard enough.

She loves him, right?

Surely, if he proves himself enough...

And then, on the other hand, Mystra. Once Midnight, her human personality has been subsumed by the goddess of magic and her duty to the Weave. She has a responsibility to magic, she IS magic.

Then along comes this mortal boy who knows how to handle her Weave. Who doesn't try to wrestle with and dominate, who sings to it. He handles it with such ease and grace—it's not just that he could be Chosen, but he deserves it. To put her Weave in the hands of someone so intrinsically in tune with it, who understands its potential with a wonder like no other. Few enough can handle the raw power that comes with being Chosen, but this one? This one is perfect.

And he adores you. And you adore him, like one would a beautiful butterfly that's landed on their finger. And he's willing to be devoted to you in all things, not out of transaction like most of your worshipers are, but out of love for you, your craft, your magic. You're so deeply and utterly charmed by him.

And it's not like Mystra hasn't walked this path before.

She gives him what he desires, because what he desires is her. And, in a different way, she desires him. She wants him to be her representation in the world. She indulges his adoration with her own presence, and takes indulgence herself in mortal comforts. He's never satisfied with her answers, but who could blame him? She keeps a whole world away from mortals, because she knows what such unfettered power might bring about (again).

And the wizarding prodigy's ambition is lit (again).

And the height of power is reached for (again).

And she stops him (again, again, again).

She does care for him. She doesn't want to see her little butterfly burn himself, and she doesn't want to be the one to ruin those wings.

But then he's not a butterfly. He's a mortal, wielding a weapon of murder, of her murder, and he's brought it to her doorstep because she told him "no." And he's cut himself on it, he doesn't know what it is, but it's hurt him—and it's only a fraction of the hurt it could do to her. How dare he want her help after threatening her?

(He didn't mean to.)

(He only wanted to help.)

(He only wanted. How human.)

She doesn't help him. If he wants to pursue Karsus' weaponry, it's his responsibility, his hubris, that led him to injuring himself on it. She's furious. She's hurt. She's cold.

(What fools these mortals be.)

But then, there's a greater threat to her. Something that could drown the Material in Karsus' failings. And that little boy, who nicked himself on the sword he lifted, still wants her help.

It's a fair trade, isn't it? She'll forgive him, let him into her domain again, if he accepts his punishment and goes into battle for her. He picked up a sword, it's appropriate that he learns to use it in her name, right?

If he was telling the truth, he wouldn't hesitate. If he really wanted to serve her with the Netherese Orb, he would jump at the opportunity to do so. He would have to give up a few petty things in the process, ("petty," she calls mortality, as if family and home mean nothing, as if friends and love are finite. Because to her, they do mean nothing. Because to her, they are finite.) but it isn’t atonement without sacrifice, is it?

It's the tactical move. She's not above hurting one man to save a nation. It's not even the first time she's done it.

Yeah yeah!!! It's a ship that has been growing a lot on me lately ig i am made to ship rarepairs

I have a few hc about them but they're probably gonna change because one i still have to form a "canon" version of it in my extremely dramatic and hbo esque version of bloodborne lore and i am also not well known for keeping constistencies LMAO

I hc that Izzy was actually one of the first tomb prospectors from when byrgenwerth decided to explore the chalices dungeons as she had interest in the beast scourge as i hc her to be a descendant of one of the few survivors of Loran and that's how she met Maria, through Gehrman and the tomb explorations!

I do not think they actually got very along at first, i think their personalities clashed a lot, with Izzy being more of a "i actually do not care what others do or think, i'll do whatever i want whenever i want" while Maria was still stuck in her old rule abiding/stuck up Cainhurst ways (both i think out of habit and both out of a fear of being kicked out of the tomb prospectors/proto hunters? In my hc she was never happy to begin with at Cainhurst but repressed a major part of her unhappiness. She only realized that after she left it and her biggest fear was to be somehow forced to return to it. So yeah my Maria is also someone who gets morbously attached to those who she sees as her "superiors" who can lead her to do better and will obey them no matter what, something that was going to bit her in the ass later in life).

So Yeah, i expected them to have lots of fights especially when regarding how to approach the actual exploration part and how to handle certain artifacts they found, but i also think that their big "bonding" moments were also born out of both's genuine interest in exploring and wanting knowing more about their respective ancestors (people of Loran and Pthumerians). So after a while they found a midway point to concile each other and after that they fell in love.

I also Do Not Think they were the most stable relationship ever

(they fought. A lot, especially as Izzy's ideology begun to shift and she began to think that becoming a beast was the true path to ascension while Maria became more and more aligned with the Healing Church methods of ascension. This is also what caused them to separate forever on bad terms. Izzy will keep thinking of Maria as the Church's lapdog for the rest of her life, without ever knowing that Maria too felt trapped by what the Church had become because at that point their relationship had become too strained for them to have an earnest conversation again + again i think Maria's deep emotional repression and denial had an hand into this)

BUT i also think it was the healthiest relationship that Maria had with someone as it didn't involve really manipulation or a power imbalance on neither part, while Izzy even after having her whole image of Maria soured after the Research Hall would think of their early days together as one of her happiest times (buut if we want to add a little more messed up layer to this we can also say that one of the reasons why Maria was attracted to her was because she reminded her of Gehr//HEADSHOT)

As a lighter headcanon i also think that Maria would have been extremely fascinated by Izzy's ability in weaponcrafting and she would spend just... hours looking at her smithing, and that sometimes they'd go together binging on pubs and inns for shits and giggles. Do not ask them from how many of those places they've been kicked out

Apparently you think this is shocking to me or something. I know Joseph Smith did horrible things. Shockingly, sometimes humans are capable of both good and horrible things.

Why do you think he was killed by a mob? I've got an inkling it's 'cuz he, uh, did horrible things. The gospel regularly teaches that anyone who abuses their authority will be removed from that authority. So, he was. I understand that's not the church's position, but I don't need it to be; I've prayed about it, and that's good enough for me. Guy shouldn't have lusted after teenagers. I wish I could sit down with Emma and let her unload over cups of tea.

Similarly, I believe that Brigham Young did good and horrible things. The church would not have survived Smith's death had it not been for Young and his stubbornness. Unfortunately, in addition to his being stubborn as a mule, Brigham Young was also a racist, a colonizer, and a bully. (And that's not even getting into his misogyny! Woof!) (Of course, he wasn't killed. When I get to Heaven, regardless of what degree of glory I'm in, I hope Heavenly Father & Mother give me a day pass to go and punch Brigham Young in the throat. He will most assuredly proceed to kick my butt, because Brigham Young was yoked, but it'll be worth it.)

The LDS church is not perfect. It is run by human beings, who are not perfect. I don't expect it to be perfect. I am deeply, deeply saddened by that fact that so many members interact with the gospel dogmatically. The gospel is so beautifully complex and unknown, and weird. It's so weird! I love it! What a weird and beautiful and complicated thing we've been given a glimpse into!

I'm equally saddened by the fact that so many non-members and ex-members interact with it dogmatically. Both approaches are an exhausting way to live.

The leaders of the LDS church have done horrific things in the name of the church. The Mountain Meadows Massacre is horrific. Joseph Smith's sexual assault of children is horrific. Brigham Young's allowance of southern members to bring their slaves to Utah (and all of the atrocities associated with that) is horrific. Joseph Smith's exhumation and parading about of a native person's skeleton is horrific. (Didja know about that one?? I do!) The blood oath that used to be a part of the endowment ceremony was... well, idk if I'd go as far as say horrific, but it was weird af, wasn't it? (And not in the fun, kooky way.)

More recently, the POX was horrific. The church's "indirect" support of Prop 8 was horrific. (lmao @ all of my fellow members who defended that tooth and claw because it 'came from God' and then had nothing to say when it was retracted a few years later, because, DUH, it SURE DIDN'T COME FROM GOD, DID IT?) The abuse of children hidden by a system that encourages keeping things within the system is horrific.

I'm not an idiot. I'm not a naif, either. And incredibly, even reading over that person's blog post, I'm not in a cult; because nothing they've described makes the church a cult. (Their argument is basically that Utah is a cult, and frankly, that one I have no issue with lmao. Utahn LDS culture is not my cup of tea. I find it stifling. [I grew up adjacent to Utah -- imo it was worse, because we had to be even MORE self-righteous, to make up for the legalized gambling and hookers.] Speaking with non-US members of the church is absolutely illuminating, because their cultural touchstones are completely different, and many of them approach the gospel differently than we do in the States. Some of my most cherished learning moments have come from non-US members. Relatedly, I miss going to the Sunstone Symposium.)

I wish the person in that blog post had been raised to understand the dangers of dogmatic thinking, and had been taught discernment. It is tragic that they experienced a faith crisis like that; not because they left the church, but because the crisis part of it was entirely unnecessary. They were not properly equipped by their parents, their family, or their community, and that's just... sad. It's deeply sad. They were failed by those who should have taught them (and based on their writing, their parents were failed as well. It's failure all the way down... which, Utah, so. I'm not surprised).

If you're an ex-member and you feel compelled to bash the church, I get it. You were raised to believe in everything that was taught to you without question, and that questioning itself was a sin. When you learned something awful, your worldview fractured. And now you've found a community of people who feel similarly to you, in an inverse of the church community you once had; where you are uplifted and edified, and you're able to righteously tirade against the Other, who has wronged you. (And I'm not discounting you've been wronged. I've met truly awful people at church. I've been told awful things. I have been hurt. Unfortunately: humans. I am not looking forward to Elder Bednar's eventual rise to prophet. Hopefully he'll get the same treatment from HF/HM that Benson did, in that he'll at least mercifully shut up about his bigotry.)

I would ask you to consider what use that dogma has to you. Comfort? Community? Purpose? Figure it out, and deconstruct the dogma. Dogmatic thinking is by definition strict. It's exhausting, and it perpetuates its own destruction. It's not worth it.

I don't need the church to be perfect. Frankly, the Book of Mormon could've been written while Smith was high on shrooms and mummia, and I'd still say it's divinely inspired.
