Reimagining a Disney movie about a wishing star
Tumblr media
I already made a remake of "Wish," but I did so trying to keep a lot of the story intact. However, in this post, I decided I wanted to take the bare bones of "Wish" (ie wishing on a Star and certain characters) and make my own story! This is my first time doing this, so lemme know what you think. (Note: I did make my own alteration by trying to fix what we got with "Wish" as well.)
Aesthetic
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall I like the idea of the film being 2D or 3D instead of hybrid. To appease the nostalgic masses, I'll say my film is 2D, though I'm unsure on what period to take from; I loved the Roccoco-inspired animation of "Cinderella" as well as the gothic, High Middle Ages aesthetic of "Sleeping Beauty" (which was an inspiration for the film; sadly, it imitated poor box office success, too). Though in terms of 21st century animation, I'm not sure if there's anything more amazing than the Firebird Suite sequence from "Fantasia 2000."
Plot
Tumblr media
"Every year in a magical kingdom, there is a phenomenon that occurs: the Skyfall, a benevolent occurrence where it appears that all the stars fall from the sky. When it happens, it's said that those who manage to catch the falling star will have their heart's desire granted. Long ago, a young man captured a star, and he asked for the power to grant other's wishes. While his wish was granted, his future--and the kingdom's future--descended into darkness, as the stars fell and never returned to the night sky, leaving it a dark void. Decades later, a young maiden makes a wish that defies all possibility, creating a light that leads to dark shadows that seek to extinguish all hope."
Characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Protagonist--In my rewrite, I'd have our leading lady as a woman of Middle Eastern, Sub-Saharan African, or Romani heritage. I haven't settled on which, though for names I'd go with either Aaliyah or Nimue. She'd be a more mature and less adorkable lead, but still fun to be around, similar to Belle, Pocahontas, and Tiana. Given her role as the sorcerer's apprentice, I'd love a callback to Mickey's red, blue, and silver look. I'm thinking a red dress in a style similar to Aurora's peasant dress, as well as a headband like Jasmine's, only a sapphire blue with silver stars. She's trained as a sorcerer's apprentice since she was a child, with her family's support motivating her to embrace the mystical world in order to grow emotionally and psychologically. She grew up in a broken kingdom filled with corruption, selfishness, and greed. One of the few people who understand right from wrong (according to American society, anyway; I know such terms are subjective), she thinks of stories her grandfather told her about the stars, and how she wanted to see them--but even more than that, she wanted to wish on one to restore her kingdom to it's former glory. While working as a sorcerer's apprentice, she gains magic and tries to help others, but her innate talent attracts people who would seek to take advantage of her, wanting to use her in lieu of their shooting stars. When she summons a star into existence, she attempts to hide him in order to keep him from being destroyed.
Tumblr media
The Sorcerer--Known as Orchus, he was originally a kind young man who existed in earlier days of the kingdom. A gifted magician, he managed to catch a star, and seeing how this was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, he wished to be able to catch more stars. His wish was selfless at first, but when he began giving wishes to others, they began to task him with doing it themselves, not bothering to work to capture them themselves, and coming up with the most mundane wishes. After a time, the townsfolk turn greedy, and one person wishes for the stars to fall every night. For a decade or so, stars rain down, to the point where even the royal family succumbs to it's charm, making wishes for grand(er) things. This earns the envy of the common people, who wish to be grander than the king and his family. This creates a war of wishes, which only Orchus manages to quell. By the end of it, all the stars in the sky have been eradicated from the sky, leaving only the moon and the sun, and the kingdom is in pieces. Orchus has become a powerful sorcerer who controls the kingdom, using the royals as the face of it, rebuilding the kingdom as a illustrious-looking location, but seeping with criminal activity and corruption. He believes this is the natural order of things: if people have wishes, they don't ask, but take what they want, and he fixes anything that gets too out of hand. He takes the protagonist under his wings in order to make a successor who can control the kingdom when he's gone, knowing that a rebellion with break out if there's no one to keep the relative "peace." When the protagonist accidentally summons a star, Orchus seeks to destroy it, believing that the world is better off without them--perhaps one day, no one will wish for anything. As you can see, Xehanort from "Kingdom Hearts" was my inspiration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The star prince--Let's name him Orion, and he's not a literal prince; it's just a nickname. Originally I had him planned as being innocent and sweet, similar to Hercules, but I do like the idea of him being a bit feisty, essentially a male version of Jasmine. I'm not sure what his race would be, but I would want a fantasy outfit like Prince Ryoma's supreme samurai look from "Fire Emblem Heroes," as well as perhaps taking fashion aspect from Prince Florian and a physical appearance similar to Li Shang and Aladdin. His voice is ethereal and while kind, he isn't afraid to assert his power if need be. Originally I imagined a youthful, slimmer build, but perhaps a more mature, muscular build similar to Shang and Captain Phoebus would be more appropriate. I'd imagine he dresses in very colorful, moving clothes, perhaps with nature motifs, depending on the situation. A scorpion motif (given his name) would be a nice mainstay to his looks. (I swear, I keep imagining an Inuyasha inspiration for some reason.) He's nonbinary since he's a shapeshifter, but most of the time takes a masculine form and goes by he/him pronouns (but I'd think he'd answer to other ones as well). He attempts to help others, but his powers quickly attract the attention of Orchus, who believes his presence will only cause trouble. As he continues to (sometimes unintentionally) grant the wishes of others, the environment begins to grow malevolent, with the weather and waves antagonizing the kingdom. It soon becomes apparent that the frequent wish granting affects the balance of nature, creating more corruption within the city and destruction that even Orchus cannot repair. As such, Orchus demonizes him as a malevolent being who is keeping stars from the people. It's noted throughout the film that there are other, albeit less powerful ways, of people making wishes besides shooting stars, ie a wishing well.
Tumblr media
Protagonist's family and friends--I'm kinda iffy on how many people there are in the film so they can all get proper attention and development. I'd like to say both of the protagonist's parents are alive: her mother is like a mix of Gothel and Lady Tremaine, but with good intentions (she's vain, greedy, and a social climber, but deep down she does care about her family, even if she's frequently selfish), and her father is emotionally detached and critical of many of her decisions, being particularly hard on her due to her prestigious position as a sorcerer's apprentice. She has two brothers (I was gonna do sisters too, but no Disney princess has brothers): a younger one who is quite intelligent and crafty, already pessimistic of life and believes you have to lie, cheat, and steal to get anywhere in life, and an older brother who is super naive, easily taken advantage of and must be protected. The family pressures her to let Orion grant their wishes, but they keep wanting more, despite the protagonist's warnings about arousing suspicion. (As you may have noticed, I didn't give them names since I never settled on our protagonist's name/race.)
As for her friends, I'd like to think she has an excitable female friend (similar to Lottie from TPATF) as well as a weary, cautious friend (similar to Nakoma from "Pocahontas"). While her excitable friend is similar to the protagonist's older brother and wants to help those in need, her cautious friend is more concerned with keeping the peace and staying out of trouble. I wanted them to be on two ends of the spectrum in order to show our protagonist two perspectives when facing trouble: trying to get by and trying to help. I don't want there to be a distinct "right/wrong" message with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The King and Queen--They would've made kind rulers, but they grew up during the Corruption of the Sky, so they're not the rulers they should be; the king is passive and easily controlled and manipulated, while the queen is insecure and temperamental. They barely get along with each other, but one thing that did seem to quell them was the desire for a child. While they genuinely want children, their corruption makes them paranoid about the future of the throne, and thus a child is as much a need as it is a want.
Music
Tumblr media
The Anderson-Lopez team or Lin-Manuel Miranda should've done the music for "Wish" and I guess I'll die on that hill. IDK how they would've approached it, but that's just my dream. However, since pop artist Julia Michaels wrote the music, I tried to take inspiration from radio and alternative music and manifest a unique sound for the album. And I'll probably edit this since I don't fully have the plot written out yet, and I suck at song titles.
Stars--Somewhat of a long song, I imagine a gentle beginning, followed by a glorious middle section, before a haunting end. It serves as the prologue for why the sky has no stars. For musical inspiration, I'd say and Utada Hikaru's "Sanctuary" would be the inspiration.
In the Air--In this song, the protagonist sings about her potential to be the next royal magician, and how she considers the idea of becoming a royal advisor. Her family sings this with her to boost her confidence, and Orchus chimes in to hype her up before dousing her confidence. I'd probably take "Colors of the Wind" as an inspiration here.
Your Eyes--A long song between our protagonist and Orion, in which Orion tells her that she should strive to understand other people's perspectives and beliefs, even if she doesn't agree with them, since it'll make her someone the kingdom will look up to. I imagine it as a soft song at first, I imagine it goes full power ballad by the end, kinda like a cross between "You're You" (a deleted song from "Frozen") and "Let it Go."
Royal Favorite--In order to get the protagonist more on his side, Orchus attempts to manipulate her by encouraging her to tell him about the star (which she hasn't, but he has his suspicions). He does so by having the king and queen convince her that everything is fine in the kingdom, and that she should focus on using her magic to give them a child (which would keep her distracted). I imagine this as a guilt/gaslight song that masquerades itself a bubbly and cozy; Gwen Stefani's "This is What the Truth Feels Like" album (specifically "You're My Favorite" and "Loveable") as my inspiration.
Nightfall--I'm thinking it starts off slow and quiet, creeping and making the hair on the back of your neck stand up as Orchus sings calmly as he uses begins to kill those who oppose him, having managed to kill Orion. Honestly I keep thinking "Pray You Catch Me" with this for some reason.
Nobody--Our protagonist is imprisoned and forced to watch as her parents are abused by the townsfolk for standing against Orchus, with their newfound wealth and power being cast aside. She reflects on how she wanted to make a difference, and all that she's done is hurt everyone she's cared about, and Orchus reminds her that she needs to get in line. However, her friends manage to free her, and they tell her that it's good that she's nobody, since everyone says "Nobody will defeat Orchus."
Constellation--After defeating Orchus, his power explodes across the sky, creating a new generation of stars, albeit now they don't fall. Our protagonist reflects on how she misses Orion, but it's for the best, as she worries that he'd be taken advantage of again. During the journey, she reflects on how some wishes should never be granted, and how she believes that some of the people of the kingdom will eventually achieve their own wishes through their own efforts, not it'd take a while before anyone WANTS a wish granted, seeing all the trauma the kingdom's been through.
Lemme know that you think! This was fun! I may edit this a bit more with time. Don't get me wrong, I like my alternate takes, but maybe I'll do more original stories with the bare bones of Disney films. I'm already coming up with a "Frozen" concept!

On that note, thank you very much to my new mutual, @lordfenric-writes for tagging me! If you don't already know Fenric (can I call you Fenric?), go check out their Content Links Post for access to their 2023 NaNoWriMo project and more! Soft tagging: @tate-lin @lucianinsanity @songsofsomnia @moonscribbler @words-after-midnight @blind-the-winds @sarah-sandwich @mydeadpony @inkovert @sender-paulson @athenswrites @wordsacrossemptypages, @winterandwords and anyone else who'd like to participate! If you want me to remove you from the tags, just send me a message and I'll get right on it <3
Current Book I'm Reading: OK, so the first thing you need to know about me is that I'm a fully institutionalized academic, and although I've (THANKFULLY) left that world behind, I. CAN'T FOR. THE. LIFE. OF. ME. stop reading like an academic. I haven't been able to read fiction in over a year. The only genre outside of non-fiction that I still seem to be able to connect with is horror. And not like ghosts in your attic horror. Obscure, weird-as-fuck horror. Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman & Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova horror (which are both excellent books, by the way). But that wasn't the question, was it? The question was: what am I reading now. Well, (oh god) I've been digging into The Last Man Takes LSD: Foucault and the End of Revolution by Mitchell Dean & Daniel Zamora, which sounds a whole lot more trippy than it actually is. Mainly, I'm interested because the authors point out that Foucault's late philosophy, his so-called 'ethical turn' towards an 'aesthetics of existence', was inspired by a trip he took to California (and the upper reaches of the universe). Since I wrote my MA dissertation on this exact topic (the ethical turn, not the LSD), I thought it might come in handy for future articles...
Last Song I Listened To: Bastille & Hans Zimmer's new cover of Bastille's Pompeii, Pompeii MMXXIII (recommended by a friend). Before that, I was listening to a 'British Folk/Weird Folk/Horror Folk' playlist on Spotify which was pretty interesting... Actually, it reminded me of being a child in the English countryside, stuffing my face with berries by the side of the road and then going to the new-age shop in the village to listen to whale-song CDs, touch magic gemstones, and smell incense sticks. Very hippie.
Currently Watching: The Servant on Apple TV (is the baby real or not!? It's driving me crazy); Foundation on Apple TV (and I swear it's not because Jared Harris is in it or Lee Pace wears chainmail crop-tops. I swear!); and... The News? Does the news count? I watch a lot of 'the news' now. Actually, I can't stop watching... It's been quite sad and terrible lately...
Current Fic I'm Reading: Sorry, I don't read fics! I know it's blasphemy. Believe me, no one is more disgusted with me than I am. But yeah, there you go... Never been my thing, really. Nothing against it.
Next On My Watch List: the upcoming Napoleon movie featuring Joaquin Phoenix; Killers of the Flower Moon; anything A23 produces anytime; Priscilla by Sofia Coppola (which is A23 also so, you know, naturally); and I'll probably re-watch The Green Knight for Christmas (it is a Christmas movie, after all).
Current Obsession: My WIP, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, which you can check out on my writeblr side-blog (@thesorcerersapprentice) has been my main obsession for the past -what?- four years? More or less? I really feel like until I've written this thing, gotten it out of me, I won't be able to write anything else. It just won't leave me alone. I can't think around it; I always end up coming back. It's a story I fundamentally, deep down in my bones, need to write. So it's my obsession: today, tomorrow, and always, right up until the day it's done.

Poppy, Rose, and Jam for the world building ask game? 👀
Thank you so much for the Ask, @dreaminggoblin!!! I'll answer this one for my WIP Enchanted Illusions (my Victorian-inspired dark fantasy).
(The Ask Game)
POPPY - What historical event does every student learn about?
I guess that in Ansburke (the main fictional capital city where most of the conflict in Enchanted Illusions takes place) the most important historical event that still haunts the inhabitants of the city (and which caused scars that still affect their society, whether they like it or not) is the centuries-old war between humans and Myths (non-human people, such as vampires, gorgons, faeries, etc), which came to a stop only a 100 years or so before the main book, with a peace treaty that gave start to the "peaceful" coexistence between humans and Myths in the main cities, an event often referred to as The Dawn - even though the truth is much darker, and some humans haven't accepted peace and want the war to start again from the inside out of the city, this being the main conflict of the book the protagonists need to prevent.
ROSE - What is the most known myth?
There are many legends and stories from both sides - both humans and myths - many of which tell the tale of the time before there was peace between humans and creatures. One of the most well-known myths is the tale of a forbidden romance between a human prince and a Myth commoner at the height of the war, centuries ago, and the tragic fate that their love ended in - though slightly hopeful, with their half-human, half-myth child being often seen as the proof humans and creatures could create a brighter future together. To some, that is a cautionary tale of what their society can do to innocent people, to others, a story about finding hope even in the darkest times.
There are also many different versions of how the current peace treaty came to be - some believe one version, others another. Most people have a hopeful or neutral interpretation of that story. However, some of the most belligerent humans say that the peace treaty is a farse, justification for their prejudice.
JAM - Share your favorite piece of worldbuilding information!
Hum... That's a tough one! I like a lot of things about the little world I created for Enchanted Illusions, from the aesthetics, the masquerades, and the different nooks and crannies of a city so full of secrets, lies, and intrigue. From the workings of the cruel Hemlock Society to the grim cobblestone streets of the lower alleys and the social web of the city's inhabitants, there's a lot to discover in this WIPs world. I also like giving my own spin to common mythological creatures, which are the basis for the Myth people in this book!
However, I guess one of my favorite details of this world is the Sorcerer Council, which is the "magical elite" of Ansburke. It's my favorite for a couple of reasons: I love writing political intrigue, especially if it involves the hypocrisies and secrets often associated with high society. The Sorcerer High Council, often known simply as High Council or just the Council, mixes all of that political intrigue and secrecy with the workings of magical hierarchy and spell-casting orders of the city, giving it a whole other layer. It has very strict rules, and its members are expected to be exemplary individuals worthy of representing the magical order they hail from. While, in theory, the Council exists to ensure the safety and common good of the people of Ansburke, some of its members - those with friends in even higher places and a lot of dangerous influence in the city's underworld - have grown complacent and often care more about money than the lives they're supposed to use their talents to protect. A once fair system - when it came to choosing the most talented apprentice from each magical domain/academy - has given way to a cutthroat competition where candidates are often chosen out of nepotism or convenience, rather than raw talent. It parallels some of the core issues with the very city of Ansburke and heavily represents some of the themes this story discusses/criticizes.
Not all of the members of the Council are bad, there are some really good people there who genuinely want to help the city thrive - but they are vastly outnumbered by the others who are more powerful and who are there only to deal with politics/gain money. Those who try to stand in the way of that corrupted side of the Council usually become either expelled from it, "eliminated" (let's just say some Council members made others conveniently disappear), or silenced in some other way. That's why Damien Daemitya chose a silent approach to his dealing with the other Council members - he wants to make a change but realized that if he doesn't pretend to play along with their game, he'll just become another casualty, and that would do no good to the city he wants to protect (that and the fact he wants to shelter his daughter from all of this mess).
I guess I just love writing complicated, often "not what it seems" organizations with dark secrets hidden beneath a gilded facade. It is also the origin of some of the subplots and other main conflicts in the story, so I have a lot of fun developing this aspect of Ansburke! (:

Disney VHS Minutiae: 1992 Stuff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you're my age, and are American, you likely saw these warnings before Disney films when popping in the VHS of a movie, show, cartoon compilation or some kind of half-hour program...
Where and when did they first debut?
There's been some light debate around that within Disney VHS collecting circles, and deeper depths than that...
The conventional wisdom in those circles has held that these warning screens first appeared sometime in fall 1991.
Specifically, on later pressings of ROBIN HOOD's July 1991 VHS release...
However, over the years, I haven't seen one of those tapes containing the green warnings (as opposed to the equally iconic red-orange warnings that Disney had been using prior to that, for a good 7 years) that was printed any earlier than spring 1992...
So, for now, I rule that those ROBIN HOOD pressings with the green warnings started popping up around early 1992. Around the time 101 DALMATIANS came to VHS. And I'm specifically talking about the prints that have the green warnings and the cut-short 1989 Walt Disney Classics logo. Not the more common set of pressings that use the gradient 1988 Walt Disney Classics logo. I've got that one, mine's printed in September 1993.
So... Not ROBIN HOOD... Where else?
The Walt Disney Studio Film Collection...
A showcase collection of the studio's most-known live-action classics that came in cardboard slipcover cases, it's often been suggested that this collection first hit stores in September 1991... So that means the green warnings came out in fall 1991, right?
The montage of films that appears the beginning of each VHS ieven copyrighted "1991", so that's proof, eh?
But upon digging, the line of videocassettes hit the store shelves on January 24, 1992...
Tumblr media
Funny thing is, sometimes the copyright dates on things don't refer to release years. It's merely the year the thing is copyrighted.
For some Disney examples, the '80s VHS releases of CINDERELLA and SLEEPING BEAUTY carry - in Roman numerals - the copyright years. CINDERELLA is copyrighted 1949, and SLEEPING BEAUTY 1958. CINDERELLA was theatrically released in February 1950, BEAUTY in January 1959. So, they were copyrighted at the end of their respective completion years. The Pixar film ONWARD, a March 2020 release, carries a 2019 copyright at the end of the credits.
And so on and so forth, there's plenty of examples elsewhere. Off the top of my head, video games' copyright dates don't always align w/ release year. MS. PAC-MAN in pretty much every iteration is copyrighted 1981, but the game actually hit arcades in February 1982.
So yeah... It appears that those green warning screens appeared on January 24, 1992... They may have been created in late 1991, printed onto VHS and Betamax tapes in late 1991, but they first appeared on television screens in late January of 1992.
1992 was like this aesthetic reset for Walt Disney Home Video.
The tapes now had all-new FBI/anti-piracy warnings, we went from red-orange with a Golden Age of Hollywood-looking font to green and more basic sans-serif fonts. We now had an all-new Feature Presentation logo:
Tumblr media
There's also a weird bit of history concerning when that one first appeared... There's been an anecdote going around for what seems to be two decades, that has long claimed that this self-writing bumper actually first appeared in late 1991 on specific pressings of RESCUERS DOWN UNDER... But I have yet to find any evidence of those existing. For my non-existent money, it first appeared on 101 DALMATIANS' debut VHS in April 1992. Second set of pressings, to be exact. The 1st pressings of DALMATIANS had no previews whatsoever.
Even some title cards using the same lilac background and Laser font to match, as seen on the VHS releases of 101 DALMATIANS and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even the Walt Disney Classics logo - ya know, the one with Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey - saw a minor update, in that it looked a lot more saturated and blue than before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Subtle differences, but they're there!
Those who made the title cards/bumpers really liked the Laser font, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even the French-Canadians got one:
Tumblr media
An all-new Walt Disney Home Video logo appears to have debuted in early 1992 as well... Sometimes in black, sometimes in blue:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It actually first appeared in late 1991... But on commercials only. Not the full 5-second logo, but just the second-long shine with an announcer speaking, and the music corresponding with the movie trailer:
youtube
That ad for RESCUERS DOWN UNDER above might just be the first-ever appearance, at that...
It seems the full logo debuted on the 1992 VHS release of NEWSIES, and - in bumper form with additional text - 2nd pressings of THE ROCKETEER that same year. Otherwise, it was elsewhere throughout 1992: Commercials, promo tapes, etc.
And that was, to date, their biggest year anyways due to the success of both 101 DALMATIANS (which moved over 11-14m units) and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (which broke the record back then, with over 20m units sold).

«When one reads certain Christian writers of the twentieth century one gets an impression that technical progress in itself is evil. Such an attitude, too, implies a subtle form of Manichaean thinking.
As a matter of fact, the technological burst of creativeness has all the earmarks of the greatest phases of civilization—and of all that which is morally and aesthetically good. There is something about technology which is related to the classical and objective in the history of art. There is about this kind of “making,” say of a jet plane, some of the same creative anonymity which went with the making of medieval architecture […]
Bergson foresaw that, once automation is generally organized, an enormous amount of human energy will be available for creativeness. Needless to add, if this should not come about the resulting vacuum will be filled by some kind of instinctual “flooding.” It is obvious that such a dilemma cannot be considered outside the moral sphere.
Hence the two faces of technical progress: on the one hand a sense of aesthetic joy and moral goodness; on the other the image of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, with that vertiginous feeling of an un-ending crescendo.»
— Karl Stern: The Flight from Woman

Y’all remember that era of live action Disney movies in the early 2010’s where they knew Pirates of the Caribbean was starting to die off as a franchise so they were just like,,, throwing shit at the wall?
I’m talking like Lone Ranger, John Carter, Sorcerers Apprentice, Prince of Persia, that kinda shit.
That’s a whole ass aesthetic right there. Sure admittedly most of those films were just kinda average, but damn they feel so nostalgic for no good reason

Thank you, Maddie (@veneritia), for tagging me! Maddie is currently working on a high fantasy novel packed with court intrigue titled When Comes The Dawn! Go check it out! You can also find her (honestly, ultra aesthetic) response to this tag game here. Rules: Pick an OC and post a song you relate to them, an image that represents them in some way (aesthetic, picrew, art, etc), and a quote of dialogue or narration from them. Totally feel free to expand and explain! ✦ Tagging anyone who wants to play!
I picked (drum roll!) ✦ Altaluna ✦, the protagonist of The Sorcerer's Apprentice, a fantasy novel that explores the interplay between colonialism, capitalism, and environmental catastrophe through the fraught relationship between a mysterious sorcerer and his protogé (the aforementioned star of the show).
✦ S O N G ✦
Particularly for the following lyrics:
I am what I am and I'm good at it And you don't like me well that isn't fucking relevant [...] I have power, there are people who depend on me And even you have time you wish to spend on me And now you all think I'm unhinged But wind it up and this honeybee stings Did you think I was a puppet on strings? mun has yet to gush about how much they love Mambo’s design and character animation on this blog so they will now.
I love the amount of expression in his ears, they way they bend down when he is disappointed or scared and then shoot back up, the way his tail falls down at such moments as well, how he takes his hat off to plead or introduce himself, I adore his adorable tiny fangs and how they occasionally peek out even when his mouth is closed, him climbing down a tree and bounding up the tower stairs on all fours like an actual cat, the way he clings onto others when he is nervous or freaked out, I love his big round nose, small clawed hands, and the tufts on the end of his ears, cheeks, and tail.
I especially love his clothing and how much of an aesthetic it is. The blue is complementary against his purple fur and reminiscent of both sorcerer apprentice and jester clothing. I think the slight bagginess of them against his scrawny figure only adds to his charm and his sleeves being so big and loose they hang off of his skinny arms is the cutest thing.

"Wish" rewrite: Setting the Scene (NOT the prologue)
Tumblr media
Welp, I'm finally doing a lengthier rewrite of "Wish." For those new to my account, I must stress that you do not--repeat: DO NOT--need to read my shorter two rewrites of the film as well as song rewrites in order to understand this story. (BTW, the above art is by Sanjaycreates on Twitter.) NOTE: THis is all subject to change before I get the prologue and stuff going!
The Setting
Tumblr media
The Kingdom of Nelke is a fantasy kingdom with German influences (but with racial demographics that you'd see in the Americas), but by no means should it be taken as something historically accurate, or even 100% culturally accurate. I kind of wanted something akin to "Baldur's Gate 3" where you see a mix of modern and historical garb--actually, it'd be pretty akin to many high fantasy RPGs, in my opinion, as well as the fashion for 2015's "Cinderella," if you will. I always loved the mix of modern and medieval aesthetics when used correctly. The royal family's crest is be a swan, in reference to "Swan Lake" and ruled by the favorable Queen Lina and overseen by her right-hand advisor, the sorcerer Eiko.
The Characters
(Note: I'm not an artist, so I'll simply use pics of characters who fit the overall vibe I'm going for, either in fashion, personality, or design.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Talia--For those who don't know, a variant of "Sleeping Beauty" sees the main character named Talia, which is fitting since "Wish" was visually inspired by it. She's a young woman in her early 20s, wears an orange dress, and while she is kind at heart, she is rather hot-headed, and not always in an endearing way. Right now I'm considering making her half-Egyptian, half-African in reference to the lead couple in Disney's play "Aida." She has been a sorcerer's apprentice ever since she discovered she had magical powers, but talent isn't everything. She's become a bit shy around crowds, concerned with bringing out their ire of making them overly dependent on her. She occasionally leads her friends--nicknamed "The Dreamers"--when making decisions. (Art by Jonuelsketch and Disney.)
Vocally, I imagine her to have a deep, theatrical voice, something booming and powerful. She loves to sing in order to de-stress, though this doesn't always become a song; sometimes she just sings a line or a few sentences to herself like a lot of people do at random moments in time. If I was an artist, one person who would inspire her design would be Janelle Monae.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aion--Taken from Aiionwatha, an alternate name for Hiawatha, a Native American figure who Disney made a short about and once tried to adapt into a feature film. He doesn't talk very often, and frequently tries to put on a brave face, despite his severe depression over losing one of his older brothers to magic when he was a child. He's the heart of the group, and often tries to diffuse conflict, as they stress him out. While he has great concern for Talia as a sorcerer's apprentice, he supports her, though Talia misunderstands his feelings and wants her to fail, since his own brother couldn't succeed at using magic. His main color is usually a flurry of colors, making him look like stained glass (which influences Talia's fashion at times).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucy--A reference to the protagonist in Walt Disney Pictures' adaptation of "The Chronicles of Narnia" with Walden media. She's of Arab descent and dresses in purples to reference Princess Jasmine. A fast-thinker, she always tries to think up solutions quickly and ahead of time, making her Aion's best friend when it comes to crisis aversion. The daughter of a diplomat and a smooth talker, she has confidence to spare and while she can be self-centered at times, she's first and foremost a great friend. For health reasons, she is often accompanied by a (stylish) cane, sometimes a wheelchair if things are severe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wolfgang--Not a Disney reference, but simply a German name. He has a lot going on with his life, largely due to being a political pawn all his life. While he has those he cares for, he isn't good at expressing it and consistently tries to control everything around him. It's been remarked that in another world, he and Talia could've been siblings, but not in this lifetime. He doesn't have many (real) friends, but his years of emotional abuse have led him to crave attention, even if it's not in the best possible way. Perhaps that's why he's often dressed in green; he has a bit of envy to spare.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Queen Lina-- A reference to "Thumbelina." The greatest person you will ever meet, or at least that's how the slogan goes. She's beautiful, intelligent, and often takes to disguises in order to check on her citizens. She's quite dramatic when you get to know her, but more in a theatrical way that pulls you in, not an annoying way. Her husband, bless his heart, likes to stay out of the limelight often, so he lets her be the face of the kingdom, and it suits her vanity just fine. Her clothing is colorful and ALWAYS memorable. Of course, she has an edge to her, something she doesn't want to let the citizens know about. As someone with a couple chips on her shoulder, Talia can relate--but are they in the same boat?
I imagine a soprano-type voice for her, but she has an affinity to rap when she's frustrated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Princess Elsie--An occasionally clever, but altogether lazy princess. She enjoys her royal status and letting people fawn over her. Due to her commitment to being completely selfish, the people of Nelke assume this is an affront to a more caring future ruler (which Lina continually tries to support). When she's bored, she's been shown to be quite hilarious and astute, though you can be sure she won't let herself be bored for long. She's beautiful, but in a way slightly askew to mainstream society.
A good singer, albeit not the strongest; good enough for a movie, but not to sell albums.
Tumblr media
Eiko--The queen's right-hand man and flatteringly referred to as her fairy godfather. A man who's past is shrouded in mystery (ironically clad in purples and greens), he vowed his fealty to the queen when he found her to be a worthy ruler. As of late, however, he has been looking for an apprentice to take over his place. As magic by birth is extremely rare and magic by education is difficult without a trained tutor (which there are few of in the kingdom), he has had difficulty finding one--until he comes upon Talia. While she is highly skilled, she doesn't always think things through, making her a mixed public figure before she's even come to prominence. When he isn't conducting official business for the crown, he is quite relaxed--and an excellent singer.
He used to be a more powerful singer, but he prefers a much softer sound now due to age.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anselm--My Kingdom Hearts friends get this. The mysterious being in the west wing of the castle. It's said that his (their?) magic eclipses even Eiko's. But how Anselm came to be there--or what secrets lurk inside their mind--are anyone's guess. When Talia encounters him, they are a wise and mesmerizing figure, as she's able to see a sea of stars in his eyes. When he ventures beyond the wing and into the world below, he's shown to be playful and caring, always seeming to have one's best wishes at heart. Their magical form is a cascade of silvers, blues, and white, while as a human, they often wear "feminine" colors (bright/light colors, including pinks and purples) with flower motifs when in his human form, his favorite being a bleeding heart. His favorite room in the castle consists of a giant koi pond that frequently calms his soul. However, despite his outgoing nature, he can be quite shy when he develops a crush on someone, most recently Talia. Despite her attempts to look the other way, Talia reciprocates his feelings, and she finds that he may be hiding a mystery of his own, as she sees a sea of stars whenever she gazes into his eyes for a long time.
Probably the best singer, a tenor with heart and power.
Lemme know if you have any questions! IDK when I'll release the prologue, but it shouldn't be too long. Originally I was gonna include the storybook intro in this, but I've decided it's better to just put it in the prologue since I'm still figuring out my words. I may or may not write songs for this; I imagine it's a musical, but IDK if I'm gonna be happy with the songs I write.

✦ PHILOSOPHIKA ✦ INTRODUCTION
“With ideas it is like with dizzy heights you climb: at first they cause you discomfort and you are anxious to get down, distrustful of your own powers; but soon the remoteness of the turmoil of life and the inspiring influence of the altitude calm your blood; your step gets firm and sure and you begin to look – for dizzier heights.” — Nikola Tesla, On Electricity.
Hello, citizens of Tumblr! I'm PHILOSOPHIKA, a 33-year-old British/Colombian philosopher (BA/MA), activist and aspiring novelist. Welcome to my MAIN BLOG, where I share all the cool things that pop up on my dash. Tag & ask game-friendly.
✦ I’M SPECIALIZED IN
— AESTHETICS: (from the Greek “aisthetikos,” “sense perception”). This branch of philosophy studies concepts such as beauty and ugliness and investigates the nature of art and the senses. — ANTI-FASCIST ETHICS: Ethics is the branch of philosophy that asks how we ought to act in order to lead a morally laudable existence. Anti-fascist ethics explores the philosophical mechanisms, thought patterns and social behaviours underlying fascist ideologies and how these might be prevented and/or altered.

💅🏼 What's your aesthetic? ☯️ Define something that you're all about, as simply as you can. 🐸 Something that makes you smile for fandom reasons?

💅🏼 What's your aesthetic?
I... I don't really know. ADHD ? is that an aesthetic ? I collect a lot of things. I like occult and antique stuff. my wardrobe is mostly graphic tees. most of my jewelry is fandom related, I don't wear makeup, I dye my hair. I listen to all kinds of music. so I don't know; I've been told I'm crowcore / scavengercore but I'm really not sure. I just. collect and look like however I feel, there's not much rhyme or reason to my "vibe" beyond that. like. yeah, I really don't know if I "have" an aesthetic at all. uwu;

🐸 Something that makes you smile for fandom reasons?
gosh I don't know. also don't really know what this question means. the first thing that popped into my head was "novice" from assassins creed like. I don't think Malik really called Altair that that often, but the fandom perpetuating it is funny to me. uh. like really, the only other things that come to mind are, like, references I make specifically to content that come up a lot, but idk if that's what the question is looking for ?
like, whenever I hear anything along the lines of "this plan wasn't thought through" I quote the dinosaur from Meet the Robinsons: I've got a big head and little arms, and I just don't know how well this plan was thought through ! ....master ? or "are you crazy / insane?" and I think of nic cage in The Sorcerer's Apprentice just like
Tumblr media
like, I get reminded of fandom stuff a lot in my daily life and I quote it in a lot of my social interactions so like. yeah. I don't know if that's what the question means, but it's the answer I'm going with ! just stuff living rent free in my brain, I guess XD
