A fragile secret

Chapter 6 of Please Say You Love Me 😏

Ghost turned to face Soap, this time prepared for the way his heart skipped a beat upon seeing him again. He focused on the gauze wrapped around his forearm that was covered in spots of blood.

“May I?” he asked, holding his hand out to Soap.

Soap raised his arm and Ghost gently took it. He ran his hand across the material until he found where it was tucked in. He pulled it loose and began to slowly unravel the gauze.

Soap’s eyes were unwavering, leaving Ghost feeling hot from the intensity of their gaze.

Ghost threw out the old gauze and picked up a disinfectant wipe. He tore the top off the paper package and pulled out the moist cloth. He carefully ran the wipe over the wound which caused Soap to flinch slightly.

“Sorry,” he said quickly. “You good?”

Soap didn’t respond but simply nodded.

Once the wound was clean, he picked up the fresh gauze and began to wrap it around Soap’s forearm. He had made several rotations when Soap spoke up for the first time since Ghost had begun changing the bandages.

“I thought you said you didn’t live with anyone.”

Ghost broke his concentration and looked up in confusion. But Soap wasn’t looking at him. Ghost followed his line of sight.

Sitting on the counter was a black cylindrical container with two openings. In both small holes, and sitting at opposite angles to one another, were two toothbrushes.

Shite.

“I don’t,” Ghost replied quickly, although even he didn’t think it sounded believable.

Ghost could feel the heavy skepticism coming from Soap despite not a word passing through his lips.

“Well…” Ghost said with uncertainty, giving in. He returned his focus on tightening the gauze. “Not anymore…”

Anything would have been better than Soap’s unusual level of wordlessness.
