Trembling then, he spoke to the leaves as the fog climbed and his bark itched, “There were greater threats than strange light and weak ichor in these woods...would that I could remember what.”

The fog caressed him then, as sweetly as it had outside its murk, but the whisper that followed carried a voice, Beloved...

Delgrij jumped with the word and spun, dropping Faerai’s arms.“Ophnea?” He asked after the voice—clear as the light she first spoke to him. Faerai’s confused expression slipped past his eyes unnoticed as every drop of his ichor ached.

...I am sorry, beloved, Ophnea whimpered, her voice a sonorous melody caressing his bark with silken fingers, but it howled with agony. An agony not his to claim that coiled in his thoughts and iced through his ichor. I could remain not another light in those halls, in that bed, her voice lamented to no one, no one but him, I had to flee. Oh, Namael, my beloved, to see you burn for me...for us...forgive me.

“Of course, my love,” Delgrij told her, hunting the surging white for a face to match the voice, a love to kiss and hold and comfort. But none emerged. The sprout faded, hazy and wavering as delicate arms broke from the fog, coaxing him towards it. And he swooned at the sight of them, so smooth and sweet, so like his love and he lurched for those arms. “You are forgiven,” he whispered.

Violet light flashed too close, too bright and the fog dispersed, taking the voice and gentle touch with it. Delgrij snarled, he thrashed, and then groaned, squinting in the glare as a face cleared.

“Rolls. Close,” Mitra commanded in too small a voice, “Lost ins mire is lost always.”
