thinking about how it's almost worse that the true lancelot thanked merlin at the end of 4x09 because instead of having some comfort in thinking that the shade was only the image of lancelot, merlin has to live with the knowledge that his lancelot was there the entire time, locked away, and he did nothing to help him until it was too late

merlin and the rest of the knights around a campfire after leaving a village bc lancelot and leon somehow started a brawl in the tavern: ???

merlin is busy cooking dinner and confused out of his fucking mind: what???…..valiant….oh the knight with the snakes.

gwaine who was slightly tipsy now stone cold sober and sitting up straight against a tree: wait. explain. what do you mean merlin asked you out??

arthur snaps his fingers as he recalls the memory: i apologized for sacking you and you said that if i bought you a drink we’d be even.

merlin now remembering how he had stumbled into camelot, picked a fight with a pigheaded bully which quickly turned homoerotic and flirtatious, and continued their teasing-flirting for days before merlin shot his shot and asked the prince out only to be rejected: oh yeah, i forgot i did that…..wait, you mean you didnt realize what i was asking?

arthur: no?? we argued everyday, how was i supposed to realize you were asking me out??

merlin now abandoning the dinner and staring across the camp at arthur while the rest of the knights watch their back and forth like a game of tennis: to you we were arguing, to me that was very much flirting. i thought you were flirting back so i decided to ask you. then you rejected me

arthur, mentally beating his past self up for fucking up their chance: i didn’t reject you!!! i just didn’t realize what you were asking me. how was i meant to? we fought every chance we got

leon, nudging elyan, glee and excitement riling through him: its happening!!! its finally happening!!! seven long, grueling years is finally paying off!!!

merlin, realizing the misunderstanding and acknowledging the fact that he wasn’t rejected, his flirtations just weren’t noticed - realizing he still has a chance: oh…oh i see. arthur, my dear, our fights were extremely flirtatious. need i remind you of what you said? “do you know how to walk on your knees? would you like me to teach you?” or “i could take you apart with one blow”

arthur, mental capabilities at an all time low: m…my dear….?????????

merlin grinning devilishly as he realizes that his flirtatious persona he had hidden away after falling head over heels for arthur can make a come back: that is what i called you. should i call you something else? say…mine?

Lancelot and Guinevere

A while back I was writing a one-shot based on the deleted scene where Arthur gives Merlin his mother's sigil and how it basically means proposing or stuff like medieval wise.

But I watched the episode (3x01) that the scene was from and I noticed something something that just broke me a bit.

This is the episode before Lancelot dies - I havent watched Merlin in ages so bare with me - but from just watching that episode I felt so bad for lancelot.

Like, the scene where the knights are heading off to defeat the dorocha, gwens there to say goodbye to them all and when she comes to Lancelot it's no romantic send off between lovers with Gwen hoping that she'll see him again. No, she's asking him to look after Arthur. And God's you can see it in his face that he's hurt by it that she hasn't considered his safety.

And again, the knights have set up camp the night or so before facing off the dorocha, and him and Merlin are collecting wood, Merlin talks about protecting Arthur and his destiny to the Prince/regent. Once again you see lancelot's heart break, because Arthur means the most to Merlin. Not Lancelot who knows his secret.

I don't think Lancelot sacrificed himself to the veil because he's noble to the kingdom or loyal to Arthur.

It was because he knew that his death would hurt the two people he loves the most less than it would if Arthur was the one who died.

29. Knight death that makes you the saddest?

Lancelot.

It was bad enough that he died in the first place but he died TWICE. And the second time he was being used by Morgana and everybody thought it was actually him acting on his own will :(

He died with a ruined image because, for some reason, the show writers never had Merlin explain to Arthur that it wasn’t really Lancelot.

On top of that, we get that heartbreaking scene of the real Lancelot thanking Merlin for putting him to rest and UGHH my heart can’t handle it.

32. Favorite Merlin fic you've read in recent memory?

Oh I’m really enjoying Make It Flow (Everything In the Afterglow) ! I eagerly await the next chapter of this Modern!Merthur fic about Merlin having recently inherited Gaius’s bookshop after his death. Merlin returns back to his hometown, Ealdor, to run the bookshop and meets lawyer Arthur and they kiss kiss fall in love (I assume atleast, it’s not finished yet).

36. Underrated friendship?

Hard to pick just one but Merlin and Gwen’s friendship is a big one for me. They were such cute besties in the earlier seasons and then Gwen becomes Queen and we hardly see their friendship anymore after that :(

So, agh, I go back and forth on this one A LOT. Because on one hand, I tend to headcanon Lancelot as straight, but then I see their scenes together and I go 🤔🤔

Honestly, I think Merlin and Lance are so goddamn charming that they are able to have extreme chemistry with basically anyone, so when the two of them are together, it’s like there are fireworks every second.

There are ships I like better than this one, but it IS an amazing ship. Lance matches Merlin’s sweetness to a crazy degree and it’s everything Merlin deserves, but not what I think Merlin falls hard for. I think they’re both so kind that there’d basically never be any angst and I need some angst lol

That being said, Lance should’ve been around him a lot more, in whatever way the writers would’ve given. Merlin needed someone like him around and they clearly made each other happy.

Do you think Merlin has a nickname amongst the non-magical enemies of Camelot? I'm not talking about Emrys, I mean like the kind of name you give a local cryptid or a semi-mythical figure, the name you'd give something when you have no clue what it really is.

Like, they don't know who Merlin is, they especially don't know who Emrys is, they just know there's something protecting King Arthur, and if you want to fuck with him, you'll have to deal with whatever the fuck that thing is. It might be a person??? Nobody is really sure??? Most people who try it end up dead, and the few who survive have no idea what the fuck happened other than they got tore up from the floor up.

Bonus points if Arthur and the knights catch one of the attempted assassins (after Merlin rocked their entire shit) and they're so entirely shook, they're just muttering about "the king's devil" or "the shadow" or some dope shit like that while Merlin's in the background with a hand over his face.

bestie, what if the nickname started because of the knights. like, remember somewhere in s1 (????) i think arthur mentions to uther or uther mentions to arthur that he's got like some guardian angel or some shit? (yes, great job, fluffy, very coherent)

so like imagine that during a patrol run or whatever, the knight tease arthur about his "guardian angel" and how he always seems to get out of things relatively unscathed (other than leon, but to be fair, he's typically the lone survivor when that happens ANYWAY) bandits probably hear the teasing, find it hilarious and decide to "put that theory to the test" and attack.

but then

tree branches fall in a timely manner, none of them are rotten or prove to be past their prime. the winds get harsher and blow their weapons away. when they flee (if given the chance) the wildlife appear more threatening than they did before, like what the fuck is going on???

fastforward, you're one of the surviving bandits who escaped after trying to attack prince arthur. you're in a tavern, you're telling your tale and someone openly ponders those odd natural disasters that led to your folly. you remember the teasing and jokes made by the knights.

guardian angel they called it. arthur's personal ex machina. you scoff at that. no way was what you just faced an angel (not that you would know) and you would rather eat your teeth than believe and angel was protecting uther's son. so, you think back to that skirmish, try to find anything to help you understand what went down.

"a shadow," that's what you come up with. "camelot may believe that their saintly prince is protected by some angel, but i know the truth!" you say, pulling all of this out from your ass. "arthur has some shadow assassin who ensures he lives to be king."

I'm watching Merlin for the first time and I'm absolutely floored by it and by how much I fell in love with Merthur and the Knights, so here's a couple of Modern! AU that popped in my mind.

Rugby Champion/Nerd AU

- Probably a classic, I'd be surprised if ao3 wasn't plenty of it.

- Of course Arthur is Captain of the rugby team and of course Merlin is the guy sitting in the library all day.

- Don't ask me how they meet don't ask me how they fall in love, they just do

- Arthur's father is the school's principal

- And for this reason there's some people hating on Arthur cause they believe he has privileges

- Spoiler: he doesn't (or denies any of it when his father offers some) but due to this he finds hard to trust people

- Hence he trusts only his teammates aka true friends aka the squad!

- And Merlin of course

- Literally Heartstopper but make it #merthur with gay! Merlin and #bi-and-still-in-the-closet Arthur

Musicians AU

- Merlin goes to a public school and no one knows he's literally a world wide known classic musician

- Idk how don't ask

- Arthur is like the popular guy who plays guitar and all girls love him yadda yadda

- he has a band (must have the boys in every merthur fic sorry not sorry)

- Leon is the bassist, Percy the drummer, Gwaine the second guitar, Elyan is the dj and plays the keyboard, while Lancelot is the singer

- Again don't ask why don't ask how but Merlin and Arthur fight or argue and end up talking ever since

- Maybe Arthur was teasing him about knowing nothing about music

- Merlin silently snickering like *You dare to fight me with your half cheap-ass rock band when rich people spend thousands to listen me play at operas lmao you fool*

- But for some reason he can't tell him that or reveal his secret or else he'll be forced to change school (I dunooooo)

- So Arthur has no idea Merlin is a genius at music

- But.

- He notices Merlin has a perfect pitch, and something like- He can't explain it but Merlin has something with music, like a touch, so he invites him over to listen to his band

- All band members fall in love with him and side with him against Arthur when the two have their - now friendly - banters

- Bros being bros - Dudes being Dudes

- Idk what I was going for with this but IMAGINE WHEN THEY FIND OUT

- Like

- Imagine this fragile boi all cute smiles and sassy remarks and Arthur goes into protective mode cause he develops a crush-

And like, Arthur has a rock band so they look cool and they don't fear anyone in case Merlin gets bullied or something

And then they see him, for the first time-

Wearing a black/navy blue suit that costs thousand of dollars, walking in this giant golden opera with royal red drapes-

And he starts playing the piano for all these rich people and he's absolutely phenomenal

And suddenly Merlin fears Arthur won't be friends with him anymore or he'll fear he's gonna think Merlin is too "marvelous" to enjoy their little rock band

- But in reality Merlin loves them and he loves Arthur and Arthur honestly can't look at Merlin and see any other man than the guy he's been teasing and has argued with for all this time,

- aaand I don't know where I wanted to go with this as well lmao

man,,, i’m so traumatized from merlin having lancelot and uther’s death happen in back-to-back episodes. not that i actually cared about uther in the way i did lancelot but like. still. that’s too depressing and too much for the main characters to go through in such a short amount of time.
