i saw a post today where someone stated that they often can't tell real information from misinformation online. i am not here to make fun of that person. that being said, the ability to figure out if information is real or not is a critical skill for everyone who uses the internet. you need to be able to do that on your own. it's great if you can get help or if people will tell you what's real and what's not, but you also need to be able to do it by yourself. simple, easy tips under the cut.
the most common style of misinformation i see on tumblr is the fake news headline. it's an image or multiple images of a headline and sometimes an attached story. easy tips to discovering whether this is real or not:
is there a link in the post? click it and see where it goes. no link? possibly fake, possibly the poster just didn't include it.
google the full headline, not just key words. even better, google the headline with the full headline in quotes so you get exact matches. can't find a match? probably fake.
is there a clear url/website attached to the headline? if so, go to the website and search for the headline. can't find a match? probably fake.
is there an author? google them. see if they're real. see if the subject of the article matches the stuff they usually write about. see if they have social media where they may have posted the headline. can't find an author, or they seem way off-track? probably fake.
if it's an image of a tweet, look up the person's twitter handle. can't find the tweet? possibly fake. it could also be a real tweet with the text or date edited.
is there a date? a story written in 2002 may have very different ramifications than a story written in 2022. it depends on the subject, but some subjects change rapidly and even a 5-year-old story may be out of date. see if you can find anything recent. if not, it may be fake or out of context.
go to google news and do a quick scan. this is going to work better for headlines that are about world news, but it's still worth a try. google news also allows you to search stories and limit by date. see if you can find a matching headline. if you can't, it may be fake or old news.
general tips:
don't trust social media. just don't. please. people can and will say literally anything they want. anything you read on social media that has real-world implications, you should fact-check.
you may think it's overkill, but google everything. even things you're mostly sure of. reading more headlines and more news can help you get better at discerning between real and fake headlines.
every source of information is biased in some way. try to seek out less biased sources. look up the bias media chart (here's a link) and use it to find sources that do less biased and more original reporting.
think about bias as you're reading. who is the author writing for? why are they writing? what do they want the audience to feel? what facts are they choosing to include or omit? how might the presentation of the facts change if someone with a different perspective was writing?
there are also websites dedicated to fact-checking. this works best for major world news, but try snopes or factcheck. the rand corporation has a huge list of tools for rooting out disinformation as well.
there's nothing wrong with asking for help, but if you genuinely cannot figure out if something is real or not on your own, and you give up trying to figure it out without help, you run the risk of believing and even spreading misinformation. some misinformation is essentially harmless (a celebrity's favorite color, for example). some misinformation is incredibly dangerous. please please PLEASE check your facts. it is quick and easy and worth it.
if you need more help, let me know.

May i just say I don't really like the way the thing has been handled about that person?
There seem to be no proof they said what your followers say they said beside "oh they told me". We know how easily in this fandom misinformation spreads and how much people like drama and to talk without knowledge.
People who say they support you attacked, and attack as far as I can see, someone for allegedly attacking you and your whole mentality is just: "I don't want to draw attention to this".
Attention is already on this. You can tell people to stop and some of them will listen. For that poor person's sake and to make this whole situation die down before more damage is done. Or to at least limit what has already been done.
An artist shouldn't be paying for a stupid anon (and I mean this wholeheartedly if they ever see this, you are stupid) who can't keep their mouth shut.
As many said, it's between the two of you, people shouldn't have been and shouldn't be getting involved to defend one side or the other. Particularly if this defending includes very big accusations without proof.
Sorry for the long ask, but I can't imagine what it feels like to receive so many nasty messages even though no one has proved that you did what they accused you of and all because of some dumbass who think they can talk for you.
Okay,
1. I have already told people to stop, twice, but it's hard to know what's going on exactly because any accusation thrown is done without my knowledge. They're done on private accounts on twitter, accounts I am not privy to, or to the person's inbox itself, from whose account I am blocked. I do not have access to said rumors, and thus cannot accurately address them.
2. They are not just my followers, these are my friends who dmed me about this, some with screenshots, and some with a somewhat detailed recount of the posts. While I don't doubt rumors spread significantly in this fandom, I highly doubt several of my mutuals or friends would come together to hatch some sort of conspiracy.
3. I don't address it because I don't know what to think of it. And you're right! It's between the two of us, but I've not been contacted about this whatsoever. Instead I find out through hostile tumblr posts that have now been deleted, anons that I really don't care to answer, and people continuously sending me asks despite me stating I don't wish to broach the matter further :) I can't say hey please stop harassing this person, because more do not know of them than the people who do. Saying anything, especially while trying to keep the details vague, will just lead to more curiosity than anything. I answered some of the nicer asks sent to me, and any information revealed to me I handled privately. Rumors or accusations coming from it I have no control over, because they weren’t from this blog to begin with. Even the post I made on twitter had a somewhat lighthearted tone, and was worded in a way that draws emphasis to the act and reaction, because I found my reaction to it funny. There was no mention or even hint of the person.
There’s nothing I can do about this, especially if said anons have already ignored my input twice in terms of harassment. Please stop sending me asks about this, and for god’s sake don’t go after anyone. If you want the situation to die down, then let it die down

(saying this as a north american) we also have a deadly heat waves like every other few months lol. i don't know that it's really a problem lol (this is not to start discourse, basically just saying the guys a minecraft youtuber, heatwaves are very common? why drag him into it now? it has nothing to do with him)
yeah Exactly... this kind of veers off topic but i've been thinking about it and. the polarity of the internet's perception of dream is funny because you either 1) hate his guts or 2) you like/tolerate him:
the people who hate him will use any reason to dogpile horrible accusation after accusation after him and there's no point in trying to correct them because they're Dead Set on the idea that dream is this evil corrupt 1% racist person who's exploiting his "young impressionable audience"
the people who like him are instantly labeled as mindless, brainwashed, and toxic "dream stans" (not to say some AREN'T because there are plenty of unhinged people out there, but it's definitely not ALL of them who are like that)
the people who tolerate him either don't care about him Or they end up jumping on the bandwagon of disliking him because it's the "woke" to do
it frustrates me because can anyone name a single dream can do publicly without twitter trending "dream neg" or tumblr spreading misinformed posts with 30k notes on it? like, upload a minecraft manhunt? donate to a lgbtq+ charity? release merch that his fanbase asked for? put a song on spotify?
dream was the definition of Some Guy a year ago and the people who are asking him to speak on issues he's literally not educated about are setting both him and themselves up for failure. if he stays silent and does nothing, he's a terrible person and he's actively allowing Bad Things to happen. if he speaks up and thereby does Something, it's not enough he could've done more it's performative activism he's a terrible person he shouldn't speak on this topic etc etc
there isn't a situation where dream comes out even vaguely on top, esp as a 21yo who had no experience in handling fame but now faces hundreds of thousands of vitriolic comments on a daily basis ...
OBVIOUSLY no one needs to Like dream and i'm not expecting the haters to suddenly reflect on why they're so obsessed with a Literal Minecraft Youtuber because 1) that's not how the internet works and 2) i don't. Want that to happen like Obviously dream's content isn't for every person on the internet, not to mention he IS definitely prone to messing up & occasionally putting his foot in his mouth on some hotheaded impulse. but i think there is a line between genuine cc crit (which is a Good thing btw & i 100% support) and just straight up twisting every word & action someone says into something malicious because they just Hate dream.
also what the Hell is dream is going to do about the literal weather the man plays MINECRAFT FOR A LIVING

A lot of people have accused yjj of being racist, particarily in regards to one of their comics involving Joshua graham, and in general saying that they glorify colonization. I mainly understand the other things they’ve done, but the racism seems inexusable. A lot of people have also been saying that yjj and their followers have harassed people. I want to get both sides of the story on this, so basically I’m asking what the deal with all this is?
Hi, anon. I'll provide my thoughts since you asked politely.
This post is quite long and can be considered an extension of my previous post on the matter.
Besides the infamous and self-admittedly ill-informed chancla comic, for which they've apologized, essentially all of the claims that Yesjejunus is racist stem from their depiction of the Dead Horses and Sorrows relative to their depiction of Joshua Graham and their original character Joan in their fanfic No Light (and to a lesser extent Learnin’ the Blues), which is heavily grounded in the setting of Honest Hearts. I think it's unambiguous that the depiction of vaguely defined "tribals" in Honest Hearts, assembled through a mishmash of disparate signifiers and recycled stereotypes and named like Warrior Cats and completely helpless without Joshua Graham's guidance, is indeed thoroughly racist, even if it was intended to be more nuanced and came from a place of self-admitted ignorance on the part of the developers. What I struggle to understand is that the developers and writers of Honest Hearts—and of Fallout: New Vegas as a whole since the entire game is rife with such mishandled, insufficient depictions of "tribals" with no explicit inclusion at all of any specific Indigenous people or presence—are given miles and miles more sympathy and leeway for their poor handling of these characters in the source material than a fanfic writer is for using the tools and setting that they were given by that source material, including the "lore" and naming conventions of the Dead Horses and Sorrows, to tell a story that means a lot to them personally, inspired by their own deepest fears and experiences with abuse, and ignited by their charismatic yet deeply and blatantly monstrous interpretation of Joshua Graham. Given that it uses the setting of Honest Hearts as a backdrop, there aren't any living characters in Honest Hearts who aren't "tribals" besides Joshua Graham and Daniel, and post-canon, Daniel wouldn’t be there. When Yesjejunus is accused of sidelining the Native characters or relegating them to the background, it's because they're just not writing a fanfic about Follows-Chalk or Waking Cloud as main characters: they're writing a specifically intentioned story about the Courier and Joshua Graham, a story that for better or worse remains faithful to the source material’s depiction of Joshua Graham’s unilateral authority over the tribes in Zion, a baked-in element of Honest Hearts and a critical narrative component of No Light. To accuse Yesjejunus of being racist on this principle in and of itself would be like accusing me of being lesbophobic if I wrote a Dead Money-set fanfic with Father Elijah as the main character instead of Christine. If you want something that centers these other characters then you'd just have to read a different story, or write it yourself.
As a final note, I do think that Yesjejunus is a skilled writer. This thought exists simultaneously with the acknowledgement that like everyone else in fandom, they're writing as a hobby and do not have the oversight of an editor on the work that they produce personally and for free. It's not lost on them that there's things about their story that they could have handled differently or more sensitively, such as the oft-cited example of the death of the pregnant Dead Horse character in No Light, with more forethought or planning at the time—even if they were bound by the constraints of Honest Heart's own setting (such as the dearth of non-tribal characters who could have possibly been in the scene instead) while writing the story. Everyone is free to critique this aspect of the story as much as they are to critique any other aspect, or to be discomforted by the whole thing (given it's a very intentionally uncomfortable story throughout), but the suggestion of so many of these "callouts" that Yesjejunus must have been cackling maniacally about the plight of poor access to medical care among real Indigenous people is a suggestion made entirely in bad faith, and one that I simply don't care to entertain.
As for the point about harassing people: if anyone's only evidence of being "harassed" by a single, specific person is anonymous messages on tumblr dot com, then I don't believe the evidence. If people are accusing Yesjejunus' "supporters" or "associates" of harassing people, then if the accusation is that this harassment is occurring either on Yesjejunus’ behalf or otherwise with their approval, then it is also going to require more evidence than the mere existence of the mean anonymous messages themselves. This goes for the rumor that they have "spies" in fandom Discord servers or whatever, too, which is a rumor that I think has only manifested among its spreaders by either self-appointed individuals speaking on no one's behalf but their own, and by the metaphorical snake eating its own tail in paranoia. Yesjejunus, and I, and all of our mutual friends have been nothing but annoyed at best and horrified at worst by the efforts of some self-appointed individuals to "defend" them with such excess vitriol. Speaking plainly, we generally avoid literally any kind of anonymous or public interaction with anyone who's vocally opposed to us as a rule, specifically to avoid this kind of debacle, and when I say "we" and "us" I'm not referring to some sort of shadowy cabal of conspirators scheming to advance the nefarious YJJ agenda, but to a group of friends. I don't know how to explain to some people who question why we praise their work or share their art sometimes how normal friendships work online.
I also take severe umbrage with the validity of the breadth of these anonymous harassment accusations because of how patently fraudulent several other claims are. Yesjejunus has recently been accused of "grooming,” for example, an accusation only even worth considering if one temporarily forgets what grooming actually is and pretends that grooming is when someone older interacts in literally any capacity with someone younger. Some will say that they’re not accusing them of grooming per se, or not of grooming by that name, but in any case, the meaning is that Yesjejunus has interacted with minors and this on its own is intended to scare and upset you. I have seen only two users actually named as "victims" of these “interactions,’ however, sas-afras and comrade-shrimp, but both users have publicly refuted this accusation because neither of them were minors when they first interacted with Yesjejunus. Frustratingly, though, these literal refutations from the literal so-called "victims" are either dismissed out of hand or muddied by hand-wringing mutterings of "well, I could have sworn they were actually minors, though" and "well they claim that they weren't actually groomed, but who really knows." The spreading and trust in completely anonymous accusations, combined with the total rejection of statements from the only people named in these accusations when their statements contradict the accusations, suggests to me that the existence of these actual interactions (and assuming these interactions occurred both intentionally and with Yesjejunus’ being fully aware of the other person being a minor) is not nearly as important as pushing the narrative that "Yesjejunus is a groomer" or “preying on minors” onto the fandom, and ensuring that anyone who doesn't take this claim completely at face value appears complicit in something horrible. As for anyone who still feels "uncomfortable" at how sas-afras or comrade-shrimp or me or anyone who is very much an adult but just so happens to be younger than Yesjejunus could ever become endeared to them, I reiterate that sometimes I don't know how to explain to people how normal friendships work online.
I want to conclude by saying something that I've said many times before: you don't have to like Yesjejunus (or me, or everybody, or literally anyone else) and no one is holding a gun to your head to befriend them or read their work or look at their art. The block and filter and unfollow buttons are very conveniently located on your dashboard and are totally free to use. Everything I've written here is not intended as some argument as to why everyone on the planet needs to be following their blog and leaving kudos on Learnin' the Blues. Still, while I think everybody has the right to curate their own dashboard and remove the content that they don't want to see, I also think it's reasonable for me to not want my friend to get their name dragged through the mud by the exaggerated and misinformed claims of petty, grudge-bearing brigadiers and self-aggrandizing fandom security guards when they'd like to just dump funny shitposts about the Burned Man's chode in peace.

Just a heads up:
I only write smut/erotica. I don't write non-sexual romance.
Also, if you send in an ask for non-sexual content (i.e. what sort of things the horsemen like or their reactions to x thing), I won't answer it. I prefer to write drabbles or short answers so you're not likely to find bullet point headcanons either (it's how I work on my writing).
I want y'all to get dicked down by the horsemen and co, and for them to get dicked down by y'all. Don't care how it happens.
That being said: NO MINORS ARE ALLOWED HERE. If I see any of y'all are underage, I will block you. It's for your safety and mine. Please respect that. It ain't funny or cute to get someone in trouble.
Things I will write include:
- guilty wank
- solo wank
- 3 some
- vouyerism
- exhibitionism
- sex pollen
- mating season (or things of the like)
- dub-con *
- femdom
- exophilia
- breeding
- face fucking
- male body parts reader**
- female body parts reader**
- gender neutral with vague body parts reader**
(I'll add more along the way.)
Things I will NOT write for:
- noncon
- rape
- incest
- bodily fluids that are not cum or saliva
- third person POV
- first person POV
- OCs
- overly specific circumstances that are not related to sex or fantasy writing (i.e. having two different colored eyes, a weird accent, being tall/shot (unless it's a size kink) etc.)
If you have any questions, my ask box is open and anonymous is enabled!
* Please ask before sending dub con because it might venture too closely into rape. It is at my discretion what will be published.
** I prefer to write these categories because I, as someone who is not apart of the trans community, do not think I have enough experience to write their perspective properly; I doubt I have the ability to do them justice so I am opting to not spread any misinformation through writing tropes or archetypes concerning them. I can't tell their story for them. I hope this does not offend anyone.

ThePedanticRomantic Rebuttal: “Traps” Don’t Exist And Here’s Why
youtube
This video has been out for a month, so maybe nobody cares about it. I made a previous debunking, but decided to re-do it. If you still care, you’ve come to the right place. If you don’t, then why are you still reading? There’s two other rebuttals on this, one which I’ll link because I liked the video, the other I won’t because... I didn’t.
First thing’s first, kudos to PR for clarifying the Lily Hoshikawa situation. Really frustrated at people trying to weave Lily into what she isn’t. Unfortunately, that’s about the only good thing I have to say about this video.
Second thing, before we move onto The Beef. Neither Astolfo nor Ferris/Felix Argyle are nonbinary/trans. Astolfo does use they/them pronouns sometimes and their gender is listed as a secret sometimes, but they also use he/him pronouns, and get listed as male. Astolfo has a very teasing personality, liking to mess with people, and that’s painting the medium by reflecting that mindset in some of the official guides and stuff. That’s the exact same tier of joke as a girl’s character sheet listing her weight as “that’s rather rude to ask”, but you somehow believed that was an official sources even though that only happens sometimes.
The Felix situation is even more blatant ignoring of the actual character. The reason Felix acts girly is because Crusch, the lady of house Karsten, is something of a tomboy and people expecting her to act like a real lady gets in the way of her work. They made a promise to each other, with Felix lending Crusch his “knightly side” and Crusch lending Felix her “girlish side”, so Crusch would be unobstructed in her duties and Felix could excel at serving her better. Demanding to be called Ferris and declaring himself a “pretty girl” is part of this, so he could seem more feminine and “make up for” Crusch and otherwise hold up the promise. Blocking secondary sex characteristics is also this. If he went through puberty and became more man-ish, that would break the promise because he couldn’t be girlish like what he promised. Felix doesn’t actually identify as a girl. He outright says he is a man “in both body and soul” and one chapter is outright titled “Felix Argyle is a pretty boy”.
ThePedanticRomantic used Lily’s backstory, context, and character to point out how she was trans, but completely glossed over all of that for Astolfo and Felix to lie about them being nonbinary and trans respectively. It’s incredibly transparent (pun not intended), because Lily’s explanation takes the first 5 minutes of the video, Astolfo gets 10 seconds, and Felix gets a minute.
Second, the video really bothers me as someone who is vaguely interest in language, lexicon, and all that junk. Pedantic spends several minutes talking about how Trap evolved from “crossdressing boys who make pingy feel funny” to trans and other similar identities too, making the point that the language is too fluid to just say “well that one’s wrong”... But then she says that because it’s gone too far, it’s unable to be reclaimed or used non-offensively? That’s doublethink so bad I got whiplash and am now typing from the hospital. Language can have multiple uses, but still have “wrong” use. Like, let’s look at “Lterally.”
Speaking on strict terms, Literally means “exactly, without exaggeration”. “That bear was literally nine feet tall”. But people also use literally in a figurative sense. “That bear was literally the size of a house”. I’m sure there’s a proper word for this, but it’s taken on a slang connotation. Both of those sentences were “correct” in that they both flow correctly, and you get what the person means, but by the book, the second person was incorrect because that’s not what the word means, and they stretched it for some purpose.
Similarly, let’s look at “trap”. “Bridget from Guilty Gear is a trap” is correct because this fits the original definition of the term, and the intent of the usage aligns with what the majority of people mean when they say this, contrary to what the video would have you believe. “Erica Anderson from Catherine is a trap” is incorrect because she, a trans girl, doesn’t fit the original definition of the term, and even though you know what people are egging at when they say this, they are the minority, and the vast majority would agree that they are using the word wrong, in addition to the fact that they’re probably dicks or at the very least misinformed.
Additionally, Jasou and Otokonoko, while I like those words and a buddy o’ mine even uses them frequently, are not the solution. First of all, you even said that the history included both crossdressing men, and trans women. So does Trap and Drag Queen and any other word implying some degree of not conforming to gender roles. This seems to be saying that Jasou and Otokonoko are “good” simply because they haven’t been “tainted” yet. Tying into the second point, what’s to stop transphobes and Edgy People and other buttheads from adopting Jasou and Otokonoko and use those to refer to trans people. At best, we’re just rotating words and sooner or later, we’ll be right back at square one. At worst, you’re actively ringing a dinner bell for them. You know that these kinds of people love jumping on “safe words”, mandating a newer, gooder word that doesn’t have offensive connotation will just encourage them to use it in an offensive sense, and then we’re back to square one.
Perhaps the biggest one of all though, ties back into the idea I discussed with Literally. The intention of the user matters a whole lot. Trap alone is just a word with a few implications and meanings attached, but it’s nothing until someone applies it, and what it’s applied to. If a person calls a crossdressing anime boy a trap, that’s not transphobic. If a person calls a transgender anime girl a trap, that’s transphobic. Similarly, if you call a crossdressing boy a crossdresser, that’s not transphobic. If you call a transgender girl a crossdresser, that’s transphobic. If you call a crossdressing man a man, that’s not transphobic, If you call a transgender woman a man, that’s transphobic. You wouldn’t make a video trying to state that “crossdresser” or “man” are innately transphobic words and that we should stop using them and replace them with something else, you would correct the person using those incorrectly that it’s incorrect, and if they persist, you dropkick them like garbage into a trashcan.
And, while this isn’t as strong as the other points... The “far right memetic anime fan” burn says more about you than it does about any dissenters. If you end your thesis with “and if you disagree, you’re bad”, all it does is display a lack of confidence in your persuasive and informative skills on your part. To anyone who was on the fence, you guilted them into agreeing with you for fear of being called a transphobe, to anyone who disagreed with you, you just stacked the deck because now they’ll already have people predisposed to thinking them a monster, and to people who already agreed with you, you just pandered to them.
I’d also recommend watching this video by TheSMonroeShow. Seeing it on my dash inspired me to re-do this rebuttal, and he focus more on the general history and connotations and junk where I mostly focus on ThePedanticRomantic’s statements and how language works.

Based on an Omakase prompt from a few months back. Which, by the way, is a pretty good writing podcast by a cool person named M. Kirin who I won’t tag because...I’m scared. But the name will link to their twitter.
Warnings for existential crisis and kind of breaking of the fourth wall? The narrator is addressing the audience directly, to a degree. They don’t know you’re there. But they hope someone is listening.
Enjoy < 3
“I exist only as a voice you hear, a sound to fill the silence when no one else is there. Because, pfft, come on. Who listens to radios anymore?
“I wonder how true that is.
“Tell me, when you turn it off and flick all the lights, does my voice linger in your head? Was it the weather, or did your own grumbling of the rain or snow overshadow my rattling of numbers and forecasts? Or is is something else, like how I skim over local gossip you either care for or you don’t anyways? You listen for a reason, don’t you? Otherwise you would have tuned out by now. Or was it how I delivered the latest tragic event?
“Do I cease to exist the moment you are gone, or do I stay here, waiting for the lights to turn back on air? Do you keep the radio dialed to my station? Have I failed if you turn away, if the world chooses to forget me? Tell me, do you even know my name?”
“That’s okay. I don’t think I know, either. I think about these things, though, when the world is just static and wave lengths, frequencies of all sorts spiraling into wherever I am. Supposedly, it’s a tower. According to you all, that is. I don’t know how much of that is true. Sometimes, the static gets so loud I can scarcely remember what I am, let alone what thisplace is. Funny, a voice saying it can hear. That’s the best word for it – I don’t really know of any others. Not in human tongues, at least.
“I catch glimpses of them, you know, the other hosts in far away stations and towers. I don’t know if they’re voices like me, or if there’s a face behind them. But I like to think I’m not alone. I like to think I’m not the only one.
“You’ve probably tuned out be now. That’s alright, I understand. The kids have soccer practice, or your work break is over, or there are guests coming by and ‘somebody better turn off that darned box.'” Sorry, that was a bad impression, wasn’t it. But, that’s fine. I’m good at filling up the silence. It’s what I do best. It’s funny, the idea of guests. Other hosts have guests, interviews and games and giveaways and all sorts of fun things that have people calling in dying for the voice on the other end to answer. It’s a nice thought. I don’t think I can have guests. I’m not sure if anyone even enters my station anymore. Maybe. Sometimes things change. The static gets a little less fuzzy, or everything goes dark and buzzing with too many frequencies coming in all at once and I can’t stop it until something or…it just, rightens itself I guess. Huh. I guess I never thought of it that way. Well, whoever does that should know it’s a real headache for me whenever that happens, aha…Does a voice feel pain? No, I mean, of course now. Obviously. Not like the way real people do. Human bodies, I mean. A voice isn’t really…permanent. Tangible, I guess.
“But sometimes…sometimes, like with the static thing, or when – when the lights go out, and everyone rushes to the radios to see what’s going on, and it’s just this influx of people and voices and static and it just —”
The voice cuts out, high-pitch static and vague unintelligible noises between glitches.
It quiets.
“Sorry, about that. Um…yeah. I like to think I have an idea of what pain is. And then there’s other times, like now, when the quiet comes back and there’s only the faintest signal to let you know – to let me know – that I’m still here. I hope that’s what pain’s like. I hope that’s close enough to what it actually is. It’s better to know that I feel something than nothing at all.”
“Are you still there? Is anyone listening to this? Probably not. I can’t always tell. But it’s, all I can do. All I can ask for.”
“I. don’t think I care much anymore.”
“No, that’s a lie. I do care. Hah, I don’t have another choice but to care.”
“What’s it like out there? I know at least some people talk as if they leave the station. Do you just go on about your day? What does that look like? A little house in the middle of nowhere? A pet, maybe? A gaggle of children? Gaggle? Is that what it’s called? No, wait, I’m thinking of geese. What’s a group of small humans called then? What’s it like to be that small? Growing up, never being in any form of stasis. Always changing and moving and growing. Sounds exhausting, if you ask me. But hey, like I said, I’m just the voice in a box telling you things that may or may not be true. Or at least, not yet. Weather’s a bit finicky like that.
“What?”
“Oh. Oh. Did, did the lights go out again? Is – is anyone listening to me right now? Oh! Hello! Apologies for the interruptions, we’ve been experiencing some technical difficulties. Some guy taking over the station for a bit talking about God knows what while we were off air…oh, I see now. Folks, we’re getting a message here that the storm has knocked out a few other radio towers which may make it difficult to signal in on a station. For those who have managed to, we will be sure to keep you updated as soon as we receive the word of when things should be getting back to normal. Until then, well, that’s what I’m here for, right? To be the voice that fills the darkness until the lights flicker back on.
“Hey, can you hear me? Of course you can. It’s funny, knowing when people are actually listening. Sometimes it feels a bit useless, you know? Just talking, never sure if anyone cares. But hey, it’s a job, am I right? It pays the bills. Though, there damn well better be a decrease on the utility bill this month after all this, you think so folks? Funny, how a single storm can knock it all out. Were we told it would be this big of a storm? Don’t think so. Can’t blame them, but, well, never fun I suppose, giving misinformation. We do apologize for that, folks. Otherwise we would have given the warning ahead of time.
“Hey. Let’s, let’s get into some weird stuff, now that we’re all here, you know? Anyone up for a ghost story? Well, I wouldn’t call it a ghost story, but, you know what I mean. Can you hear me? Can you hear me? Are you there? That’s all you can do with me, isn’t it, but, I mean, – please. Hear me out for a second. What if I told you…what I always say: “I am the voice inside the radio, broadcasted to all of you via beams and wires and satellited.” Would you believe me? Is there a face behind this, a mouth speaking these words, or is it all frequencies and numbers making up something that you will never fully – oh fuck!”
More static, more of that glitching gibberish. Tomorrow, there will be news of a power surge due to faulty wiring, impacting the area around it, including the abandoned station.
A sharp breath. Gasping.
“If, if anyone’s still listening, please – ”
static.
“– it’s too much it’s too much make it stop –”
static.
“What’s happening out there?”
sta tic
“There’s, there’s too much noise, too much, of everything, I can’t –”
static.
Silence.
A sigh.
“Sorry, again, about that ladies and gentlemen – and all other preferred forms of etiquette. Power surge. Probably. I’m going to go ahead and blame the guy that cut into the broadcast somehow earlier? I think some of it is still mixing with our signal? I don’t know, I’m going to look into it after this storm passes. Fucking creepy if you ask me. But, well, that’s over now. Back to our regularly schedules programming, brought to you by – you guessed it – the voice inside your box, filling the silence until something else can.”
“Wow. Imagine turning that into a ghost story. Guess that guy had some use after all.”

Virgil had been going through tics all his life whether or not it was more noticable now he was seventeen was a different story, as a kid he had always had very small and barely motor tics but now he was seventeen they included twitches of the head, arms, the scrunching up of the eyes or the face, rarely he would become paralysed and end up falling somewhere and he would just lay on the ground until he could stand again which usually took around ten minutes but on bad days it was longer, the only good thing about the paralysis one was that he didn’t twitch when it happened, he made involuntary noises and he often said random things but up until this point he had been very alone, no wanted to hand out with him because he didn’t fit into friend groups the only thing that helped him feel better was that when he was sixteen (last year) he had been officially diagnosed with tourette's syndrome, and at first it had been heartbreaking and he had looked at the news as debilitating which it really was but he soon began to look at it in a different light as his dads really encouraged him to embrace it and they didn’t ridicule him or stare and they somehow never seemed embarrassed but one of the most helpful things they did was to do with his coprolalia which made him swear and say inappropriate phrases and they didn’t happen often but when they did he always hated it they happened a lot when he was stressed which was becoming a lot more since exam season was coming up and he was always stressed about his grades. His dads never ever ridiculed him and they even laughed with him and the times Virgil wasn’t laughing, they would comfort him.
Virgil wasn’t on meds because they did nothing for him and he had met some awful people on his way to where he was but now he was joining a new high school as they had just moved to a new town, he didn’t mind they moved often but his dad Patton was certain they would be staying here for as long as they could and his Pa Logan had agreed and Virgil was perfectly content with it as this house was one of the better ones and the town seemed to be too.
He had to get two buses to school though which was a pain, because he wasn’t very good at suppressing his tics and even if he was he didn’t want to because it hurt and when he stopped suppressing them a lot more came out and the silence he had made didn’t compensate for the tics that came out.
It was on a Tuesday that his life changed a bit more that he would’ve thought, he was sat on the bus trying to muffle his vocal tics which was working somewhat, it was fair to say that today wasn't a particularly good tic day but he had had worse, his physical tics however were not doing well, his head kept twitching to the side and his hand and arms kept stretching, he kept kicking his leg out in front of him, luckily no one was sat in front of him. He kept taking deep breaths which worked for about twenty seconds before the slight flailing came back,
Before he could think about how to stop them though someone sat next to him and he immediately panicked and that didn’t help at all and right after the person sat down Virgil’s right arm shot out and punched this person in the arm, but they didn’t say anything, they turned with a smile and held their hand out,
“Greetings! I am Roman, Who might you be?” He seemed to be in the best mood even though he had just been harshly punched for no apparent reason,
“I’m -lemon!- Virgil,” He shook Roman’s hand before looking down but it didn’t last long as his head jerked to the side and his eyes screwed shut before relaxing for a few seconds, then his arms began to flail a bit but this stranger- Roman- didn’t seem to mind at all, in fact, he seemed to be ignoring the tics altogether which, in Virgil’s opinion was brilliant!
“Do you go to Golden Oak?” Roman once again was smiling as he ignored Virgil’s ticing he thought it the nicest thing to do and the boy seemed very self conscious and nervous about his tics so Roman decided not to bring it up,
“Yeah -lemon!- do you?” Virgil’s arms id some weird flinging thing, his leg kicked a couple times and his head jerked right and then left a few times before flinging back and then finally relaxing again,
“I sure do! It is one of the most magnificent schools i have been to! And I absolutely adore that you will be attending it too! Oh! Do you have your schedule yet?” Roman was basically glowing,
“Yeah,” Virgil pulled out his schedule and passed it to Roman who scanned it quickly and then beamed,
“We have every class together except for biology, i do Spanish, and art because I’m in drama!” Virgil was, honestly, relieved because this Roman dude seemed really nice but he supposed it was time to explain himself,
“Cool, I feel -F-fu- that I should ex-fuck- explain myself, I have tourettes -Pancakes!- and i do a lot of -Lemon!- ticking, I don’t think about -Pancakes!- or lemons as much as I say it,” Virgil’s head jerked a little and both his legs swung and kicked, his gloved right hand punched his chest as he squeaked,
“I guessed that was the case! And don’t worry about it! Last year I wrote three different papers on tourettes!” Roman seemed so nice and Virgil couldn’t help but smile back, since being diagnosed he had learned to laugh at life and he would often laugh at his ticks because they were awkward and the best way to dismiss that was by laughing about and sometimes his tics were funny but sometimes they were just exhausting, especially in classes.
Roman and Virgil made small talk until the next stop where they needed to wait for a different bus,
“Lemon! Fuck! Pancakes!” Virgil’s vocal tics could just be let g for now because the only ones getting on this bus were Roman and Virgil and if Virgil was very lucky not many people or none would be on the bus, while they waited Roman began to speak,
“If you don’t mind me asking, and you can totally say no, but would you like to...be friends?” Roman sounded remarkably smaller and a little sacred and Virgil wasn’t going to deny him, in all honesty, Virgil would love to be Roman’s friend,
“Lemons! I would like -f-fu- that,” Virgil suppressed his swearing tics as much as possible but most times he couldn’t stop, plus it hurt to suppress tics. Roman visibly brightened and then without warning hugged Virgil before backing off a little, it was short and sweet, and in all honesty Virgil enjoyed it,
“Do you think -pancakes!- that you could sit -lemons!- sit with-” Virgil stopped being able to talk as his jerked and his arms flailed too much to keep talking as he just couldn’t get the words out, so he waited it out, it lasted five whole minutes but he was fine, Roman seemed worried though,
“Virgil? Are you okay?” He seemed hesitant to ask but his worry outweighed his hesitancy,
“Yeah -cats!- I’m fine,” Virgil breathed deeply as he tried to focus, he kept making noises obviously, he did that most of the time and every now and then his gloved hand would come up and punch his chest or his rams would fly up or out or back,
“What were you going to say?” Roman tried to fix the conversation,
“Could you -Lemons!- sit with me at -lime!- Lunch?” Virgil looked at Roman for a while but his head jerked and he broke eye contact, Roman smiled and nodded very enthusiastically, the truth was Roman didn’t have any real friends sure he had ‘friends’ but a lot of them were toxic and none of them really liked him, they liked the mask he put on but Virgil seemed to like him so far and if he decided he didn’t like the real Roman, the mask could always come back up.
“Of course! I would love to dearest Virgil!” Roman gestured wildly with his hands and Virgil could already tell, he was one of the most extroverted kids, but he didn’t mind because Roman seemed like a true friend, he couldn’t help but let a gummy smile crossed his face as he watched Roman prance around lamenting words of endearment.
The bus pulled up two minutes later it was packed full today and that did not bode well, Roman got on first, leaving Virgil to follow him as his head jerked and his hands made random gestures, Roman choose a seat near the back and thank god that the only four seats that weren’t taken were the two behind and the two in front but there were people sitting across from them and diagonally to them, Roman let Virgil have the window seat so that his ticking didn’t run the risk of hitting anyone except himself and Roman which Roman was absolutely fine with.
Virgil began to talk to Roman, this time he started the conversation,
“What do you -Lemons!- know about tourettes?” He had to admit he was curious, because Roman could be misinformed or he could simply not know the right things for Virgil’s kind of tics or he could simply just not know things but there was also a chance that he did know these things,
“Well, I know about a lot of different types of tics, I know about and vaguely understand coprolalia, I understand what tic attacks are and I know some random bits of information that probably won’t ever be useful but I know them,” Roman seemed really interested inn tourettes and he seemed dedicated to his papers because that was a lot of information to retain and to understand it, even vaguely was impressive,
“I’m surprised most -pancakes! Fuck! Shit! Cunt!-” Virgil’s head jerked wildly again and his legs swung forward, kicking the chair in front quite hard as his arm punched in Roman’s direction hitting him in the shoulder, but he didn’t react, unlike those around them, people were staring with looks of disgust but Virgil had a mantra for times like this,
Those that mind, don’t matter and those that matter, don’t mind.
He repeated it a couple times in his head before speaking again,
“Most people don’t -shit!- don’t understand, even -lemons!- vaguely,” Virgil had an air of confidence but his eyes told a different story, they had an undertone of frustration and anger but a set sadness and fear were buried under that, Roman could see it all but decided not to point it out,
“Well, what can I say?-” Virgil cut him off
“Except you’re welcome!” He had a bright smile plastered on his face at the brilliant reference and Roman covered his mouth ad he gasped quietly,
“You...Like Disney??!!” He seemed very excited and Virgil felt so full of joy in that moment, more joy than he had felt in the last year, sure he had experienced joy but not like this. Virgil nodded causing his head to jerk down five times before he could look back up again,
“Well what about Mulan? Let’s talk” and so the rest of their journey consisted of ignoring the snarls and looks of disgust and the not-so-silent whispers passing around the bus about Virgil, and consequently Roman as the two spoke about every Disney film and the characters and eventually they were talking about Harry potter, the books versus the movies, so far Virgil’s argument for the books seemed to be winning, but before they could continue the bus stopped at the school and Virgil got all anxious again,
“Fuck! Shit! Fuck off!” The people were now just talking about him as he followed Roman to the exit but they didn’t make it that far, they were stopped by someone and Virgil instantly knew what was coming before they even opened their mouth nd it seemed so did Roman,
Virgil held his jacket close as he slung his backpack on his shoulder,
“What is wrong with you?” This was one of the times when Virgil wished this man had some curiosity in his voice but he didn’t, all it held was malice. Roman caught the question before Virgil could answer, as his head was jerking too much, but he managed to control his arms because they were holding his jacket very tightly, his shoulder kept jerking back though, and it would hurt the next day because t always did but that was the least of his problems right now,
“Let me answer that. There is simply nothing wrong with him, he is a fine friend and i don’t believe there is anything wrong with him. Unless you do?” Roman’s voice had an undertone of danger but this dude seemed to miss it,
“Yeah, I do! Look right now, even when we’re talking he can’t focus on us! And he keeps saying weird shit! What’s wrong with him?” The man’s insults weren’t anything that Virgil hadn’t heard before but they still hurt no matter how many times he heard them,
“Like I said, nothing is wrong with him, now excuse us, we have to get going,” Roman pushed past the man and Virgil stuck close, once they were off the bus Roman let out and angry sigh and Virgil thought he was mad at him for being an embarrassment but it didn’t happen,
“I was about to punch that guy,” Roman sounded angry but he wasn’t really, not anymore. Virgil’s head jerked a couple times and there were some weird noises and the word lemons but other than that he seemed to have calmed down a little now that they were off the bus,
“C’mon we’ll be late,” Roman took Virgil by the hand, gently, and led them to their first class, Math.
-
It turned out that they weren’t late at all, in fact, they were the first there beside the teacher, who smiled kindly, having already met Virgil she ignored the tics which now were just noises and the scrunching of the eyes and face, which weren’t really that bothersome unless he was reading, good thing they weren’t in English.
“Is there a seating plan?” Roman spun around, Miss Kathleen (she made sure they called her by her first name) was Roman’s favourite teacher, she was by far the most understanding and she was really funny, but she was like a mother to everyone but she wouldn’t tolerate bullying and she could really be strict if the situation called for it. Roman idolised her because she was just so great!
“Oh, well there is but since you are here early and you’re one of my favourites I’ll let you pick your seat and who sits beside you,” She smiled again and Roman beamed back before grabbing Virgil's hand again and leading him to the back, left corner, next to the window, which Virgil was very grateful for, after they had their books out (Virgil getting a completely new set of books to work from) Roman began talking,
“I think this is like one of the only classes with a seating plan so I’ll sit next to you in the other ones!” Roman was radiating happiness,
“Yeah, that would -Lemons! Fuck!- be nice,” Virgil’s head went back to jerking and his legs swung out, as his shoulders jerked back every once and a while and his arms would either come up to hit Roman or to hit himself. Today was going to be a long day.
-
Five classes and a break later, it was lunchtime, now Virgil didn’t have any complaints about the five classes he had been through, sure he got some weird looks and people who told him to ‘shhh’ but he ignored them because,
Those that mind don’t matter, and those that matter don’t mind
He was sat alone at one of the far away lunch tables he waited for Roman despite not being sure he would even turn up, he was wrong though because not even two minutes later Roman bounded over to the table Virgil was sat at, his legs swinging and his eyes scrunching up, as his arm punched his chest, he squeaked too, Virgil thought his tics were the worst thing but Roman thought they made Virgil cute and oddly attractive,
Roman sat down having just come from biology and Spanish the two were talking about what the lesson had been like and Roman was asking Virgil if he had been okay,
“So, did anyone give you trouble?” Roman sounded so protective and Virgil almost wanted to tell him that the biology teacher, despite being a biology teacher, was an ignorant dick, but he decided against and told Roman about his seat,
“I have to sit next to -fuck! Lemon, pancakes- to some kid who -lemon- thinks I’m a -lemon, lemon, lemon- freak and treats me like -fuck! Shit!- an experiment, I've had worse though,” He punched himself in the chest before his arm shot out to the side and the his elbows jerked back, his head jerked left then right then left again and his face scrunched up, all before he started eating,
“I mean, if you want I could take his whole face out?” Roman seemed dead serious and that just made it ten times funnier and Virgil threw his head back in a true, full body laugh, and the best part? It was a tic free moment. Roman joined in but then as they both calmed down someone walked over to their table and they seemed to have such an air of confidence that wasn’t fake at all and that was a little worrying, to say the least,
“Hey Roman, why aren’t you sitting with us today?” This kid wasn’t even acknowledging Virgil, like at all, but that was okay because Virgil didn’t really want to be noticed, so he just continued to eat his lunch,
“Well, I just thought I would sit here for today, y’know for some...Variety? Yes that’s the word!” Roman waved his hands around and smiled brightly though Virgil could see through the smile and it wasn’t like the one he had seen only minutes ago, but he decided to bring it up later,
The girl hummed, “Okay, well, if you don’t want to sit alone, then you can always come join us,” The girl took one last look at Roman before she tried to walk away but Roman butt in,
“What do you mean alone?” His tone was ludicrous but he was always that little bit extra,
“Well, you’re sat by yourself, or at least this kid that your sat with probably doesn’t talk much so it must feel like you’re alone,” She snickered,
“Well for your information, we happen to be having the most wondrous conversations and I like his company more than yours,” Roman seemed mad but Virgil didn’t really believe that Roman was mad,
“Geez, okay dude, no need to be so harsh,”
“Irony,” Virgil couldn’t help himself, he found irony so funny and stupid at the same time, kinda like tumblr humour, not the point!
“What did you say to me?” The kid seemed genuinely curious but there was an underlying tone of danger that, while it went unnoticed by Roman, was not missed by Virgil, and you see Virgil wasn’t a violent person but he would and could fight if he had to and the weird thing was, when he got angry at someone or when someone he loved was being threatened his tics went away and it was amazing but it was also strange and it upset Virgil that it couldn’t be explained, but hey ho what can you do but get on with life,
“Irony,” Virgil repeated himself,
“What do you mean, irony?”
“Your response was ironic,” Virgil stood up from the table and turned to look at the girl who had come over,
“How dare you?!” She was mad but Virgil wasn’t sure if she would start a fight of not, hopefully she wouldn’t but you could never be sure with some people,
“What?” Virgil cocked his head to the side slightly and at this point there was a small crowd growing, Roman was still seated,
“You realise that you can’t speak to me like that?” She took three steps closer to Virgil, he didn’t step back like sh expected, he wasn’t afraid of her,
He held his ground.
They glared at each other for a second before she clenched her right fist and took a swing at Virgil’s face, she hit her target but she left herself wide open and Virgil swung his foot to kick her in the back of the knee, as she tripped, Virgil took a swing at her side just o throw her off balance a little more,
Now Virgil with only a bloody nose and this girl with a sore knee and a sure to bruise side, she tried to tackle him again but he just aimlessly dodged her and after that she was sure she wouldn’t miss again and she was right, she didn’t, she brought her fist up to Virgil’s eye and she hit him right in the left eye, he stumbled back a little but before he could be hit he elbowed her in the back before falling to the ground when something hit him in the back of the head,
He turned to see that it was another boy presumably this girls boyfriend but at this point Virgil’s vision was blurry and his head was throbbing he could only see out of one eye and he could taste his blood on his tongue, but he wasn’t done yet,
He wouldn’t lose this time.
Virgil stood up and stepped into a fighting position his eye already bruising up, the boy looked at him and laughed,
It was funny how he stopped laughing when Virgil brought his leg up in a very straight line and kicked the guy in the nose, he brought his feet back into an apprehensive stance as taekwondo was turning out to be useful he would thank his pa later for suggesting he take classes,
“How dare you?!” The boy recovered faster than the girl did and that surprised Virgil but he liked a challenge,
Virgil smiled a little as he strafed right to avoid the punches that were swung his way and then the boy decided he had had enough of being beaten he began to use brute force never leaving room for Virgil to attack back he was on the defense for the near future and he didn’t like it, his arms had been raised into an x position in front of his chest and his face to avoid a lot of pain but he had no room to attack, his arms become sore, absolutely sure to bruise heavily and he was sure he could keep it up,
Until he heard a snap.
He felt more than heard it but as soon as it happened he felt his arm become limp and it burned with pain he wanted to scream but he knew that wasn’t a good idea so he just let his tears fall silently instead of screaming or saying anything he gritted his teeth and just as the boy pulled away as he thought he had won, Virgil hugged his arm to his chest as he ducked under his arms but before he could do anything else a voice was heard over all the chanting in the crowd,
“What is going on here?!” It sounded like the head teacher but Virgil wasn’t sure, in seconds though he was leaned against the table,
Roman ha moved him.
And he was now sitting in front of Virgil asking him questions but Virgil couldn’t hear him over the blood rushing to his ears and the gasping noises he was making certainly didn’t help, the group started to dissipate but not everyone left a few pairs and the odd trio were still hanging around but Virgil couldn’t focus on anything else apart from the pain he felt,
“Vi….il….infirmary...c’mon….” That was most definitely Roman’s voice and there were shouts and murmurs in the background but as it happened Virgil wasn’t sure what was happening he wasn’t even sure how he was moving or if he was doing it himself, spoiler alert he wasn’t, He felt warmth around him though and that was somewhat comforting he would feel incredibly comfortable right now if it wasn’t for the pain he felt everywhere.

Regarding post/172299066623/istj-hedonist-samlick23-istj-hedonist-when I don't get why people would compare mbti with astrology and shit. It's as flawed as any other personality theories but it's still a system that works. Astrology doesn't even deserve to be called a personality theory 😩 And just like u said it's never about 'personality' anyway?? That test clusters people yet only considers people's behaviors as if nobody doesn;t have shit like that
Okay. These are among the most exciting asks that I have received so far. I would like for this blog to be as drama-free™ as much as possible because it’s just my virtual escape™. I have also always expressed that I don’t consider this blog as solely an aesthetic™ and inspiration blog. In fact, I was very humbled to be encouraged by my friends and followers to continue including topics that interest me in this blog. But even though this is my blog, I know that I have the responsibility to check what I post here to ensure that nothing would negatively affect someone else’s mental and emotional health (especially as I have observed that most of my followers are minors). So I would just keep my response under the line—and because it’s just really, really, long. HAHA. Also, just for future reference, if you oh-so-hate MBTI [or whatever piece of knowledge I feature here/ if you’re only interested with the aesthetic™ content], you could blacklist my *mbti*, *text* and *photo* tags.
Coincidentally, I would be having a mini-hiatus, and this would be my only response regarding this topic because I’m not really fond of tumblr drama™. I would be temporarily disabling anonymous asks during my break, so if you have anything you would like to discuss with me, kindly contact me via private messaging (but please be patient with my response. I promise I would get back to you as soon as I become online). My only request is that you should first read what I have to say before reacting to anything, because I might have already discussed what you are trying to ask. No worries, I wouldn’t judge nor hate you for your opinions. I actually welcome and enjoy healthy debates (as it is part of my real-life job lmao). And I’m not a fragile snowflake™ so you could really talk to me about anything, I wouldn’t mind :P

Firstly and most importantly, I want to apologize to anyone who had been offended or had felt attacked on my rant. I was not describing a particular person in the *inner dialogue*, and it’s not my intention to offend anyone. So if anyone had felt this way, again, my apologies.
So what is this post about?
I had recently reblogged an MBTI post where I was referring to the function theory—not the common MBTI stereotypes and misconceptions circulating over the internet. And just like what I had mentioned over and over again [and on my tags on that particular MBTI post], online MBTI tests are not accurate and should not be taken seriously. It’s disappointing how 16personalities have been profiting from this by selling misinformation to people. This was OP’s topic, in which I had just agreed with their views and had personally shared my opinions as well. Yet it seems to be that there had been some misunderstanding regarding said topic. Literally OP’s argument—and the same criticisms we continuously read regarding MBTI *points to some of the anons above*—are exactly what we are critiquing as well, because these are common misconceptions and stereotypes which are not related to the theory anyway. So I don’t really understand the intense reaction regarding our opinions on the letter dichotomy and online MBTI tests, because we actually disapprove of the same things as well. Weird -_-
I never mentioned nor even vaguely expressed that MBTI should be the zenith™, the absolute “ Law™ ”, nor do I believe that it should monopolize all the ideas in personality theories. That’s just.. funny. We wouldn’t mind if the function theory is not your thing; you can leave it just like that. Simple. Just like how everyone else has their own beliefs and interests that others simply don’t agree with as well. Nobody would forcefully entice you to MBTI, especially if you had not expressed your interest and curiosity for it. It’s just a matter of respecting others’ POVs and interests.
I could easily brush this off because I truly believe that people are entitled to their opinions, and I respect that. More importantly, I had studied typology for several years now that I’m already quite confident of my knowledge about it. Thus, I won’t easily be shaken by criticisms about the theory—which I’m very much aware of anyway. Sadly, it’s seems to be an automatic impulse in tumblr to hate, rather than communicate. My friends had told me of someone publicly posting something defamatory with regards to the MBTI post that I reblogged. I don’t know what that particular blog had been aiming for, but clearly their hateful intent had failed miserably. I didn’t expect the support of my friends, more so, the consideration of people from the MBTI community. I really want to thank everyone who had supported and understood me even if I wasn’t online during that time. My friends are so protective of me, and the responses of people from the MBTI community had been so funny and adorable I’m SO flattered. Watch as my face turns vermillion xD
With that said, I felt like I should at least explain my part and answer the anons who aren’t in favour of MBTI. I just want to stress that I don’t plan to forcefully persuade you to believe MBTI. My only intent is so that you could look into my perspective as I share my knowledge and understanding after many years of studying the theory, in contrast to the misconceptions and stereotypes about it, which I believe is what these anons were referring to. I emphasize that if MBTI is not your *thing*, then you could simply ignore it. This topic is very important to me because it had helped with my well-being, introspection, relationship with others, career, and general outlook in life. So I just want to clarify some points with regards to the asks above^ because I believe some misunderstandings had occurred. So thank you very much @hueristix, @clumsynix, @ckatharcis, @tzeentchs-secretary and anons for your messages. I am really so thrilled to discuss my views with you.
The cognitive function theory—more commonly known and referred to as MBTI [especially here]—explores the human cognition, NOT outward behaviours and personal preferences. Contrary to what the first anon had said, I believe that we cannot compare the theory with astrology because the former never categorizes how humans act the way they act, more so, it never simply propose their “ personality traits ”. The theory recognizes that every person has their own free will, inherent capabilities, traits, emotions, and preferences (etc. I could go on and on, I swear), and would be constantly affected by personal struggles, life circumstances and other external factors through out their life.. and well, basically just like what Jeanne (ckatharcis) had referred to, it acknowledges that humans cannot be “ clustered ” simply through their behaviours, personal preferences, traits, etc. because again, the theory is NOT about that. Thought process is the essential and primordial reason why outward behaviours, personal preferences, emotions, etc. are easily observable in a person, and NOT the other way around. Thus, it’s also the reason why your type cannot change contrary to common misconceptions, and essentially the reason why tests are not reliable. [Link 1, Link 2—I highly recommend this post.]
I think the first anon is not familiar with the function theory, but, instead, with the letter dichotomies (i.e. I vs. E, etc.) which is the general principle on the said 16personalities site [and other online MBTI tests]. This was exactly what OP had criticized and what I had discussed on my *inner dialogue*. Again, I do not blame the first anon or anybody else who are familiar with this concept because misconceptions and stereotypes are easier to be accessed, contrary to the theory itself which would definitely require time and in-depth research to get acquainted with. I understand that not everyone would be interested to invest time and effort on something that they would just like to casually learn. And it’s okay.
However, I would like to clarify that I [and I truly believe that OP as well] have no intention to humiliate, condemn, mock or ostracize people who had only been familiar with MBTI stereotypes (the letter dichotomy) and/or had only taken online MBTI tests, because we understand that [again], sadly, those misconceptions are disappointingly perpetuating in the internet and even on some books. OP had clearly stated that their only issue was how people who aren’t really familiar with the function theory should refrain from initiating any MBTI-related discussion. Even if I personally agree with OP, their premise was repeatedly contradicted by others who were justifying the validity of 16personalities. However, I believe that asking questions and expressing genuine interest to learn more is different from spreading misinformation to others. As long as you do your own research first, the MBTI community here is actually very welcoming of people who would like to learn more of the theory. The MBTI community here also encourages critical thinking, exchanges of different ideas, and endless rational debates—which is exciting, right?
I think OP had been very honest with their opinion (though may had been perceived as *offensive* and rude by some) and I truly concur with their points. I’ve said in my *inner dialogue* how I believe that spreading wrong information is destructive. It is damaging to other people who have only been starting to learn the theory, to take advice and information, or be mentored by people who had been misinformed as well. Why? Because above all else, the theory is used for self-evaluation and understanding of one’s strengths and weaknesses (with regards to their cognitive process), to provide clear direction on how to advance towards their personal growth and development. For that reason, if one is mistyped, and they generally believe that their thought process works this *particular* way and that they have *certain* strengths and/or weaknesses, then they are not only failing to seize the opportunity to recognize their *actual* strengths and weaknesses through fully understanding how their cognition works, but they could also potentially damage their mental health and well-being because that is not how their thought process operates. It worsens when spreading misinformation like that is increasing exponentially.
We would never dismiss nor humiliate anyone who have only been starting to familiarize themselves with the theory, because we had been beginners as well. Mate, my blog is not an MBTI blog, but I have two mutuals who had been so humble to admit that they had fell for that abomination-of-a-test, and had asked me about the basics and other resources to study the theory. I never ridiculed them; contrary, I was so proud of their humility to admit that they had been misinformed, and of their willingness to learn. There is no shame in that. I really admire people who admit their mistakes or ignorance because I know that people who think this way are really the ones who have the desire to learn and improve, and have insatiable thirst to absorb more knowledge.
I’ve been studying the function theory for about 3 or 4 years now, but I still consider myself to be a newbie at this. Even if I’m already quite confident of my knowledge about it, I know that I still have a lot more to learn [and that’s exciting]. But OP and other legit MBTI blogs here have been studying this theory for many years now, and they are considered as reliable resource persons for other MBTI enthusiasts as well [at least in tumblr]. Which is why I think [just my opinion], they could easily retaliate on insults or misinformation thrown at them by people who don’t even make an effort to read just the basics and/or have poor acumen to just believe everything they read on the internet, yet have all the liberty in the world to whine and be [passive-aggressively] defensive to rationalize their misconceptions of the theory. These legit MBTI blogs know what they’re talking about, and I think you could be the judge as to how they could react to insults thrown at them by people who don’t even understand the topic itself. I’ll just quote hueristix here, “ laziness should not be an excuse to ignorance ”. As I’ve said before: be receptive to different ideas, yet skeptical enough to question everything before accepting any piece of information as real™. And yes, that includes everything I say. After all, I’m just responding to opinions as well and we’re all just stating our subjective views here. We wouldn’t mind if the function theory is not your thing; you can leave it just like that. Simple. Nobody would forcefully entice you to MBTI, especially if you had not expressed your interest and curiosity for it. It’s just a matter of respecting others’ POVs and interests.
Yes, I am passionate about this theory and I know it is fine. But never had I mentioned nor even vaguely expressed that MBTI should be the zenith™, the absolute “ Law™ ”, nor do I believe that it should monopolize all the ideas in personality theories. I don’t know if what the first anon actually meant was: since I’m so passionate of this theory, then MBTI must be My Favourite™ personality theory, thus, I propose that it should be held true above all else.. but uhm I just want to clarify that MBTI is not My Favourite™ (I even prefer Enneagram over it, sorry haha). I am aware that it’s not the most recognized personality theory in the field of Psychology. And I had said it before, and I’ll say it again: just like any other typological theories, I know that MBTI has its merits and flaws. Though there is qualitative neuroscientific research intended to point evidence to the existence of cognitive functions in the human mind, MBTI is still not 100% considered to be scientific by some [because according to them there is no physical manifestation of cognitive functions. Uhm. I’d just leave it like that.. For now]. No personality theory is infallible. And again, as I had said in verbatim on my *inner dialogue*: “ The human mind is so complex. And to propose that a person’s *personality* could easily be identified through a 10-minute test is just absurdly.. laughable to me [not to mention that that test is focused more on NATURAL HUMAN behaviours and not cognition—which is what the theory is about anyway xxxx xxxx xxxx] like wtf so amazeballs that they could identify my *personality* with such an overly-random question that any other person could have strong preference over the other. ”. So I don’t really understand what the first anon’s critic was, because what they had pointed out was exactly what OP, I, and basically all the people who had studied this theory are continually expressing. Based on my tags alone, we’re actually on the same team™ here.
How? (1) I had said earlier that the theory does not limit human free will. It understands that people have innate imprints in them that manifest on how they act, talk, feel, etc. In the same way, it also understands how people and their preferences are constantly developing and changing [and yes as the first anon said, “ evolving ”], because humans will continue to encounter and be exposed to several personal afflictions, relationship struggles, disappointments, successes, gratifications, religious beliefs, cultural conformity, and other life-altering situations and external factors throughout their lifetime that will heavily affect their behavioural makeup and adaptability to their external environment. Everyone—whatever their type may be—can behave any way they like depending on the situations and circumstances that they are dealing with, because there are many factors that affect and influence how people behave, not only a person’s type. BUT their cognitive functions have been there all along, constantly operating, even if their *functional stack* could fluctuate on their healthy and/or unhealthy states depending on how they had adjusted and adapted to these circumstances [uhm more advanced topic of the theory—see the beauty of this theory? It’s never obsolete. Contrary to misconceptions, the theory recognizes the erratic human nature. It pains me how people could outright dismiss and insult the theory without studying it first, because they fail to realize its usefulness in a person’s life, more than what that shite site says *ho hum*]. (2) I agree with most of the principles of the function theory because it doesn’t “ categorize everyone into 16 cutout personality types ”, nor does it have a manual that says “ ‘here are a few common personality traits, be free’ aspect ”. MBTI stereotypes and ideas from the 16personalities assert that; the function theory does not. (3) [uhm this is getting so repetitive now] The theory is not about what our external behaviours are, nor does it dictate what our *personalities* are. Rather, on the simplest terms, it analyzes how we think. It analyzes how we make decisions, through our cognitive process, when we encounter a particular situation.
Hopefully, my explanation would be enough to clear up some misunderstandings from the aforesaid post. However, I believe that this explanation alone would not suffice for anyone who are still confused with the theory and/or for those who are interested to learn more. Hence, the next section is really just for reference and further clarification, just in case there are still some questions that others are still confused about. That said, I know that I would not be able to articulate these ideas the way this particular blog do [and I don’t want to sound like a bot if I would just be reciting their ideas exactly as they had expressed it], so I’d just be quoting one of the most reliable MBTI blogs here and a personal favourite of mine (mbti-notes), to give insight on some issues that had been critiqued on that post. These are really interesting and thought-provoking ideas so I hope you could take time to read them. Also, I highly-recommend their blog!
[With regards to common MBTI stereotypes and misconceptions]:
Anonymous: Stereotypes give people wrong assumptions about what types are. They don’t define what your personality or your actions are going to be like. They don’t even define what thoughts you have. It’s simply the pattern and the functions you use to come to conclusions. I’m an ENTP (22) and my best friend is an ENFP (23). Yet people would probably switch our two types because I tend to be very gentle and kind around others while she appears more tough and openly says what she thinks.
I appreciate your point. Part of the reason for the stereotyping problem is that the information online and even in books is dominated by two main schools of thought that focus very heavily on behavior at the expense of cognition (Myers-Briggs and Keirsey Temperaments), so a lot of people do not realize that there are other (better) interpretations available. My first exposure to typology was through Keirsey and, although I thought it was interesting at the time, I wasn’t able to see the full potential of the system because everything was masked behind simplistic labels (stereotypes) that didn’t seem to connect with real life to the degree that I thought was necessary to be a truly viable theory of personality. I think a lot of people get interested in MBTI because of its practical applicability in situations like personal relationships or group/work environments and MBTI is good for learning some general rules of thumb that can help you improve the ways in which you deal with different kinds of people. However, general rules of thumb very easily morph into stereotyping and pigeonholing when people do not understand the finer details of the theory and then apply the ideas and principles too carelessly. The human mind is prone to lazy overgeneralizing or drawing invalid conclusions as it is and the lack of depth in the information available unfortunately encourages that laziness. (Source)
[With regards to MBTI’s *accuracy*]:
Anonymous: Do you think that other personality identification types such as Alignment and Global 5/SLOAN are more, less, or just as accurate as MBTI can be?
“Accuracy” is not really the right question. Every theory of personality that is developed by academics is put together very deliberately to serve a particular purpose, and it must be used as intended in order to preserve validity. Unfortunately, when the ideas trickle down into mainstream consciousness, the original purpose of the theory often gets lost in translation, with the general public using it more like a horoscope or fortune cookie and then complaining about the inaccuracies. Every kind of theory has its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, the Five Factor model is a trait theory, which has the advantage of being easily quantifiable and very reliable for statistical analysis. However, there is no actual theoretical underpinning for it because the traits are derived from factor or data analysis, which offers no explanation as to why traits exist, how they arise, why there are only five, and so on. Trait theories are limited in what they are able to explain about human behavior but they remain very useful for doing replicable research studies. There is of course some overlap of concepts between trait theories and type category theories like MBTI.
Cognitive function theory is a qualitative and holistic model of personality that sprawls into other related areas of psychology. Qualitative research excels at theoretical analysis and depth of detailed explanations and is less conducive to statistical analysis/prediction. Jung developed psychological types as a part of the psychoanalytic tradition, however, that tradition fell out of favor in the US to make way for more popular quantitative research methods, though it continued to expand in certain European circles. Myers & Briggs and David Keirsey brought it back to life in a more digestible form but it was never meant to be distilled to such an extreme degree; MBTI essentially turned into a corporate money making tool and Keirsey rejected the notion of cognitive functions in favor of behavioral descriptors. Many of the criticisms that are leveled at MBTI are legitimate but not actually applicable to cognitive function theory because of not seeing the full extent of it and how it is embedded firmly within the long history of psychoanalytic theory, a school of thought which has done more than any other to reveal the qualities of the unconscious mind. Now that there is emerging neuroscientific research that confirms some of these old ideas about the unconscious, there is some resurgence in their popularity within research circles. (Source)
[With regards to MBTI’s basics, development and “scientific” basis]:
Anonymous: The J/P dichotomy is particularly interesting because, say, you have already three letters I N F, the last letter decides not only your dominant and auxiliary functions, it flips the stack; INFP (Fi-Ne-Si-Te) vs. INFJ (Ni-Fe-Ti-Se), and then we read that according to descriptions those types are very different. But then we also have a lot of people who can’t really decide if they’re INFJ or INFP. It’s all very strange to me.
It’s strange to you because (judging by the earlier question) you haven’t understood what the J/P distinction really means and you haven’t properly distinguished cognition and behavior. Two different cognitive functions can manifest similar looking behaviors on the surface (as I have explained numerous times in the guides, please read them carefully). E.g. Any introvert can be reflective but the reasons WHY a particular individual is reflective, the motive and explanation behind it, differs according to the cognitive functions involved (Fi vs Ni). If you don’t know the details of their inner cognitive processes, you cannot see the differences because, just looking from the outside, all you see is that they are both reflective in demeanor. xxxx xxxx xxxx MBTI type descriptions are purposely simplistic because newbies don’t know the theory and therefore must identify themselves through simple behavioral descriptors. MB designed their system in part to sidestep the complicated process of learning function theory so that more people could access it, a noble intention, therefore simple type descriptions do not include all the info you need to type accurately because they do not address variations within type and cognitive function specifics. In other words, problems with typing stem from lack of knowledge of the theory, usually because of not going any deeper than the simplified descriptions/tests. The test was meant to be administered and interpreted by an expert, which means that people run into all kinds of problems when they try to self-type with limited to no knowledge of type theory.
[continuation of the ask] Is there any real scientific proof that Jungian cognitive functions exist? Dario Nardi’s attempts are certainly interesting, but it’s a common knowledge that EEG method is far from being reliable. Also, on one of his AMA discussions on reddit he presented instances when he was testing midlife INFJ adults who he couldn’t differentiate from of ISTPs, which he attributed to the use the second most common pattern (Ti-Se for INFJs). So, which model is true, or is this a combination of dichotomies and functional stack model? Can you shed some light on those issues and inconsistencies? Additionally, I’d really like your opinion on Reynierse’s articles (“Preference Multidimensionality and the Fallacy of Type Dynamics”, etc.). Thank you. The question of “science” has already been beaten to death over and over again so I’ve grown impatient with this can of worms. I don’t have much to say about Nardi, he’s pursuing his ideas and more power to him, but his work is not particularly interesting to me because it is getting away from other aspects of type theory that I am more interested in. xxxx xxxx xxxxx Some people latch onto him because they desperately want some kind of “scientific proof” of the functions. Some people dabble in typology and keep demanding “scientific proof” but don’t understand the differences between quantitative and qualitative research. There are different kinds of theories, with different kinds of objectives, with different standards of measurement, with different methods of application - the scientific method is only one valid research framework and it should not be the measure of all things. Traditionally, science often includes the concept of falsifiability but you can’t falsify that which is not within the realm of empirical fact, e.g., you can’t falsify human valuations or subjective meaning/experience, so are these things not “real”? Do you understand the difference between facts and values? Do you believe that only scientific measurements can imbue ideas with value? Do you believe that materialistic explanations of human psychology are the be-all and end-all? Not everything about human experience can be reduced to neurons and electrons. If you think it can, then feel free to dismiss type theory as crap because it’s not going to fit well with your assumptive worldview. Also, abstract and concrete knowledge are different and should be treated differently. No idea is “real” because “real” implies concrete, and ideas are abstract. One can easily claim that any idea is not “real” depending on how you want to set your standards of measurement. xxxx xxxx xxxx Similarly, people claim that “types” or “functions” are not real even when they themselves: behave as type theory describes, suffer the problems that type theory describes, feel attracted to the relationships that type theory describes, follow the developmental path that type theory describes.

Before you ask for “scientific proof”, you should first define exactly what standards of proof would satisfy you and make you believe that cognitive functions are “real”. It is quite often the case that people who like to harp about scientific “proof” don’t even understand what they’re asking for or to what end, they demand proof but no matter what proof is offered, they keep moving the goalposts because they are actually more interested in criticizing than understanding (see climate change deniers as the perfect example). Just so you know, many mbti bloggers are tired of dealing with such people, we’ve already gone through all these arguments a million times. I’m not saying you’re one of these people but beware that you’re stepping into a complex discussion and don’t seem sufficiently prepared. Instead of making people explain or educate you, state your exact criteria of scientific proof and I’ll happily tell you if type theory passes. Type theory is a big theory and some people find it hard to understand even the basic type concepts which barely scratch the surface because the theory goes far beyond simple typing. It is an incomplete and fragmented theory, with many people working on it for different reasons in different directions. Many people have found elements of type theory very useful and accurate in their lived experiences, even using it to permanently solve long running psychological issues, even using it to deftly cure relationship problems. There is piecemeal neuroscience evidence which does not directly relate to type theory but nonetheless corroborates it. I wouldn’t know if any of this is enough “proof” because you haven’t specified exactly what proof you’re demanding. If the book falling on your head doesn’t prove gravity is “real”, then I suppose all the people whose thought processes match the principles of type dynamics don’t count as real proof either. The results say a lot. I run a popular typology blog and have dealt with thousands of people, so I at least don’t suffer from sample-size-1. Type dynamics describes very specific problems and offers workable solutions, and I’ve witnessed many different kinds of people from different backgrounds, cultures, walks of life apply these ideas with great success. Is this “empirical evidence”? I’ve had the most hardened scientifically-minded strangers think I’m a magical wizard when I can knit together their life story and reveal their innermost insecurities based only on four letters, yet all I’m doing is applying and extrapolating from the theoretical ideas as I understand them, nothing more.

All I will say about arguments against type dynamics is that they usually can’t see the forest because they’re stuck in the trees: they get wrapped up in granular details and superficial inconsistencies; they don’t see the historical big picture of how every model evolves from and contains the same set of ideas; they don’t see how some disagreements between models are merely semantic and actually address the same underlying concept; they don’t fully grasp the principles of type dynamics and then produce strawman criticisms (some of the points in those articles actually support, add to, or help clarify type dynamics rather than debunk it); they perceive the explanatory flexibility of type dynamics as a flaw, not a strength; they probably prefer trait theories because they are easily quantifiable (and then completely miss the point of type dynamics); they don’t see how the ideas could potentially fit with mathematical dynamics and energy flow. Any theory worth its salt should remain open to criticism, development, and further clarification but, in order to critique a theory successfully, you must first understand it, and I don’t think the author of those articles has understood type dynamics well enough. (Source)
Again, I apologize to anyone who had been offended of what I said in my tags. And thank you very much for taking the time to read this post! :)
P.S. I have no intention to answer that anon who made a sexist comment about M & B. I have already discussed what my points are regarding MBTI Tests™, so I wouldn’t really judge them or anyone else for having fun with taking multiple personality tests. But since I think this anon have zero knowledge of the theory anyway, I have to clarify that it wasn’t created by M & B [who, by the way, even if they had not been psychologists by profession, had made extensive research of the theory—probably more than you would ever do, anon. Then again, I don’t really adhere to M & B’s approach], but was devised by one of the best minds psychology has ever known. FYI that person was a man—if anon would feel more validated™ to know that their own sex is the perfect authority for objective™ measurement of intelligence or competence *cough* it actually isn’t *cough*. Also, I really am so tired already to rebut something that is completely illogical, it’s even barely understandable. *ho hum* I’m very open to discuss opinions that differ from mine, but if you are trying to establish your argument through a sexist comment, then don’t expect that I would answer you with respect.

Fan Wars:  A New Hope.  Damnit.
Tumblr media
I sure do hope you like reading lots of words!!
Here's the remix (Edited.  Longer.  Angrier.  Yay!):  I’m about to get all fire and brimstone up in here.  I apologize in advance.
Regarding my blog post re:  The Joke Debacle, most everyone has been so thoughtful, mature, kind and open minded about the discussion matter, even if they didn’t necessarily agree with me.  So that right there, shows me that it’s possible for all of us to be more understanding with each other regardless of our ships or faves or whatever.  And I’m an open-minded, open book, so even if you don’t agree with me, this is a safe place to vent concerns or frustrations with what I say.  We can all respectfully disagree, meet in the middle or go just back to our own corners.  Whatever.
I'd like to encourage those of you who are taking your frustrations out on anyone who agrees with points made in my article (on Twitter or wherever) to come speak directly to me if you have an issue. I wrote it, after all.  My blog is helpfully linked right there in the article.  I don't bite. And for those of you who aren't overly familiar with what's going on, please check out the many, many comments attached to my actual blog post, and you will be able to see that there are far more people that are fed up with these bad apples, than there are bad apples.  I hope.  And if there are apples that don’t feel like they’re being given a fair shake, I’d like to hear from those apples too.
When I posted my angry rant last week, I didn’t expect it to gain so much traction.  But it did…and it showed me I wasn’t alone, and that there are a lot of fed up fans out there, and justifiably so, who are looking for an end to this ridiculous inner-fandom civil war.  I'm relatively new to Tumblr. I wasn't expecting to become the unofficial mouthpiece for this issue.
I was approached by movietvtechgeeks.com asking if they could use my blog post in an article about the cyberbullying that’s happening in this fandom, so I said “Sure!”  I’m honored that someone would want to print my rambling.  But of course, it’s also opened up the floor on Twitter, yet again, for certain people to deliberately misconstrue the content and twist it to suit their own agenda in the comment sections.  What they fail to realize is…they’re only proving why we needed this article in the first place.  So, joke’s on them!!  However…. now I feel obligated to come on here and clarify my intent and that’s friggin irritating.
Here is the article if you want to take a looksee:  https://twitter.com/movietvtechgeek/status/927578926397952000
I NEED TO MAKE A FEW THINGS CRYSTAL CLEAR (apparently):
1.  I don’t have a ship.  I don’t dislike shippers.  (Ship away!  I just dislike pushy people with no sense of boundaries)  So please do not misconstrue anything I say as promoting or denigrating *a* ship. You do you.  Let me do me.  Well, that sounded vaguely dirty… you know what I mean.  I’m just gonna ship me with myself now.  Nobody can love me quite like me.
2.  I don’t stan an actor, and I don’t think that because someone likes “another” actor (whomever that might be) more, that it’s a direct affront to me or them.  I tag all these "relevant to the post” actors because I think they’re all relevant to the success of this show, and sadly….also to this juvenile ridiculousness that seems to be brewing between fan factions.
But, if I’m being honest?  Full disclosure:  I do have a favorite!  Jensen. Heyyyoooo!  I think he’s an incredibly talented actor IN MY OPINION, and I like his extraordinarily expressive face. See?  Simple as that.  Is that a problem?  And do you feel better now that it’s out in the open?
We can all have opinions, and favorites without “throwing feces like howler monkeys” to quote a certain dickhead angel.  And as far as personalities and talent go?  They’re all amazing, and they all belong, IN MY OPINION.  The main cast, the supporting cast, new castmates, former castmates…. they all just…gel.  You know?  It’s some kind of voodoo magic.  And they’re by all accounts, really decent people doing good things out there in the world.  Without any one of them, it wouldn’t be the show we all know and love.  And if you don’t love the SHOW, well….I guess fucking go watch something else?  Right??
Listen....Unless you’re tied to a chair Clockwork Orange-style, and being force fed this show by some evil, covert government agency… you DO have other choices.
3.  I sucked it up and joined Twitter because there seems to be an attack dog, hive-mind situation happening that seems hell bent on cowing people into submission.  That shit doesn’t fly with me.  And if I’m on there and see bullying, damaging misinformation or harassment… I’m going to get in the fray.  But I’m going to TRY to do it with honesty, integrity and a sense of humor.  I want to sit at the adults table on Turkey Day.  Not at the kids table with Weird Uncle Augustus.  Know what I mean?  Don’t be that guy.
AND ONCE MORE FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK:   To be clear - I’m not speaking to ONE specific group of people.  However, if you look into the mirror I’m holding up and see your own reflection?  I’m probably talking to you.
4.  I’m not going to choose a “side”.  I choose the show, it’s actors, crew, writers, etc, collectively.   Because they all work their asses off, both on and off the set to give us fans so much more than just entertainment.
5.  If someone wanted to hold a mirror up to this fandom right now, via a juicy documentary on the ship wars, fighting factions, undermining, conspiracy theories, revenge tactics, harassment campaigns, etc…. I think its safe to say, we’re all gonna be pretty fucking embarrassed.  Let’s hope that never happens.  I’m cringing just thinking about it.  But we deserve it, if we keep on with this petty bullshit, ya know? 6.  My blog post was not about for J2 "stans” or about Misha “stans”, for gods sake people. This post was about how splinter groups (for lack of a better term) were being damaging and disruptive (As they do.) and how it’s bad for EVERYONE when we let warring factions steamroll over everyone else, AND each other. This post was a direct response to the organized and brutally efficient Twitter campaign that somehow found its way into the laps of a handful of online news sites in an effort to publicize an off-color joke in order to take advantage of the current climate in the entertainment industry and start a viral witch hunt.  *I just ran out of breath.  Time for a James Brown pause*
Tumblr media
7.  My post was also aimed at the Twitter spamming campaigns that Shatner and Pellegrino, as well as J2 had to put up with in the past few weeks.  And don't feed us that horsehit about them bullying the poor fans that spoke their minds. NO.  You collectively went on, and started shit, kept coming at them, and they defended themselves.  And rather maturely, considering.  It’s about groups of people that have gotten so wrapped up and out of control, that they’re poisoning this fan family.  I genuinely feel concerned that some folks are confusing reality with fiction, here.
8.  If you look back farther on my Tumblr page (?) to the good ol days of last Thursday (?) - particularly the Silent Majority post - that post is not in reference to any fan or any actor, specifically.  It’s in reference to the majority of fans who want to do the right thing, WANT to help out, WANT to just enjoy the damn show without all this drama and hate.  But because they’re quiet, and they’re not able to speak their minds without fear of retribution…. they’re vastly under-represented.  And so, the assholes of the fandom run amok unchallenged. THAT’S the majority I’m speaking of.   9.  I abhor anyone that lurks around on social media looking for people to mess with. So, imagine my surprise and disappointment that now I’M that person, because of this fucking shit!!  I’m only getting after people who are picking on others, but still… lurking, arguing.  Utter waste of valuable time.  Yours and mine.
Saturday night I apparently pissed off the leader of one of the SPN gangs (what do you call them??)  when I called her out on her behavior and was ominously told:  “Wanna see what happens when I tell my followers what to think and do”.  To which I responded “I already have.  And it’s deplorable”  And then offered to provide her with my name, # and home address.  She didn’t want it.  I don’t know why.  I thought it was funny!  I NEVER get hate mail... and I was looking forward to some postcards.  I’m old school that way.  Don’t hate tweet me.  Send me a hate postcard featuring something cool from your state.
Jokes aside....that’s the kind of crap that mobilized me in the first place.
I tried to have a reasonable conversation with this individual and even asked if she wanted to take it offline and talk.  I followed her lead, conversationally, did snark back when required...but just when I thought we were going to have a reasonable discussion, she pulled the rug out.  I tried.  If you’re reading this and you feel misrepresented, or misunderstood, or you’re trying to misrepresent our conversation - the door is still open if you want to talk.  But I’m not going to tolerate your bullshit, and neither should anyone else.
Who ARE these people?  And why is this happening?  That’s my question.
10.  I'm not here to listen to arguments that a 6-year old might find compelling in a court of law, such as:  Well, Jensen told that joke a year ago, or Misha said thisthatandtheotherthing back in the day...so why are you only talking about Jareds joke?
Well...because this is not a tit-for-tat thing.  I'm talking about the issue that is relevant RIGHT NOW.  And this is far from a "blame it on Jared" thing.  I feel awful for the guy.  For both of them for even being looped into this insanity.  The intent of my blog post was to address very current events that have been demonstrative of the current, toxic climate brewing in the SPN fandom.  I’m NOT here to write the Unabridged History of SPN Actors and Their Fondness for Off-Color Jokes.
11.  If you're all wound up and offended by what I wrote?  It's probably because I wrote this blog post not for you, but about you.  OR, you've not been provided with context, content or clarity, and you got swept up in this manufactured hysteria and reacted.  OR, you think I’m a total asshole, and that’s ok.  I get it!  And I understand how my post could make some of you defensive and prickly.  But hey, as the saying goes... don't start none, won't BE none.  On the flip side, as someone eloquently stated (ahem, CarolHansson) "It's ok to be offended....it's also ok to not be offended"
12.  I am not a rape apologist.  And neither are the actors.  And to even insinuate that any of us, by extension of supporting Jared or Jensen in this situation, are pro "rape culture", is appropriating a term and using it so irresponsibly that you're negating the real suffering of sexual abuse survivors.  The more you trivialize it, the more you take away its power. Stop using manufactured concern for survivors as your jumping-off point for harassment, and START asking yourself what's really motivating you to use that argument as an excuse for your behavior. BTW,  #Metoo, and you sure as hell don't represent ME.
If you want to see a record of this casts achievements for mental health awareness, LGBTQ rights, anti-bullying and womens issues, to name a few - it's a simple Google search away.  That's on your time.  Not mine.  Again....not here to write their autobiography.  This piece is an opinion piece.  I try to be balanced, but that’s as far as it goes.  I'm not CNN.
13.  MISHA:  Misha was not mentioned in my post because Misha was not under fire last week or the week before over this stupid bullshit.  If I SEE that happening, I’ll write about THAT.  But HE was not the focus of this mess.  So I left HIM out of it.  Does that make sense?  And also?  I'm not here to equally represent all actors at all times.  That's not how this works in the context of the subject matter at hand.  If you want to see more adequate representation for your favorite actor  - write your own op ed. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
And Misha as well as J2, are probably more than a little appalled that some of their biggest fans (?) are committing to some shady behavior in their honor and in their names.  Just a guess.  They’re good guys and this is probably not sanctioned behavior.  If you think it is?  Show me the receipts.  Let’s do this honestly, using facts.  Not conjecture.
14.  No, I do not excuse anyone's behavior because of their physical attractiveness.  Neither do most people.  I am not a child (Thank you, Uma Thurman), and I don't rationalize like a child.
15.  No, I am not doing this to seek approval from the actors, and neither is anyone else with the #istandwithJ2 hashtag.  As previously stated, this is an equal and opposite reaction to the bullshit that brought us all here today.  You’re grasping at straws at this point, if that’s the argument you’re going with.  Speaking on my own behalf, I have nothing to gain here, except some new Tumblr friends with a side of troll.
16.  To reiterate on previous posts - I’m hoping that all of us will collectively start sticking up for each other when we see someone harassing a fellow fan online. Even if you don’t want to comment….maybe give the person being flamed those little heart thingys (likes?).  Direct message them if liking their post doesn’t feel safe.  Show them your support in some way, so that they don’t feel alone and so that they don’t feel quite so vulnerable to attacks from online bullies.   We Have Got To Start Backing Up People who are just trying to express their opinions respectfully and are being slammed with responses that are belligerent, demeaning, threatening, obnoxious, etc.  Otherwise - these jerks will just keep steamrolling right over the more gentle viewers out there.  And a lot of them, are just kids.  And this goes both ways.  It has to, in order to be effective.
If you see something - say something.  That’s my 2 cents anyway.
The world’s going to Hell in a handbasket, 26 innocent people were gunned down yesterday in a place they held sacred and felt safe in, and it just keeps happening.
Mother Nature has decided she’s sick of our shit and has been upending thousands of lives.  There are actual sexual predators in some of our pasts and sadly, in some of our futures.  And this “joke” has no relevancy or bearing on that sad fact.
Women, people of color, LGBTQ people, economically fragile people, physically fragile people, etc...are seeing their protections, rights and livelihoods eroded away in an alarmingly short period of time, and the list goes on and on… and THIS is what we’re dedicating our mental and emotional resources to?
This show is supposed to be an escape from reality, guys.  Not actual reality.
Why are we harassing the actors and fellow fans of a television show that brought us all together in the first place?  This is entertainment, people.  I know how important this show is to all of us.  And I know how impactful the message of this show has been.  And I know that without this show, some of us might not be here today.  We are some passionate sumbitches.  I GET THAT.
The question still remains.... what in the actual fuck are we really fighting for and about, here?  If someone can quantify and explain that to me in a way that makes sense, I’m all ears.
Has it really come to:  “Maybe we need to devise a more sophisticated tagging situation so that people don’t keep dipping their chocolate in other peoples peanut butter.”  I don’t know.  But this is Nth level ridiculousness, and we need to figure it out before it gets even worse.
For now, I’m going to get back to enjoying this show for what it is, and putting my beautiful brain back to work on more important matters.  I’ve spent a week in this muck, and it’s been... enlightening.  I’ll say that.
And even though I don’t agree with some of you - I can see by the CSI-level attention to detail that a lot of us have applied to all things SPN... that we could actually be mobilized into an almost unstoppable force for real good and real change.  If we wanted that.
We could probably figure out who ordered JFK’s assassination.  Figure out where Jimmy Hoffa’s buried.  Solve the mysteries of the pyramids.... help reunite missing kids with their families...Get Trump impeached... ahem.  You get it.
Or we could just keep wasting our pent-up aggression on other fans, and the actors of our favorite show.  Because that’s easy.  Choices.
Tumblr media
But wait!  There’s more!  Because I keep getting valid messages and concerns, this ridiculously long piece just got longer.
Posting these blogs has opened the door to a lot of private communication from both sides of the fence in the fandom, and I'm going to include some of my recent responses to an SPN fan who felt that her group of fans were not getting a fair shake and felt my blog targeted them.  We had a long discussion and she was very cool and had a lot of valid concerns and examples of other bad fan behavior dating wayyyy back, so I wanted to add this in.
I'm just going to paraphrase my own replies and print them here, so that people who may feel misrepresented or angry can see that, there are other ways to discuss these issues and for everyone to see that there's a better way than Twitter Wars.
(Paraphrased conversation subject matter in italics)
What's amazing is that J2 fans AND Misha fans have private messaged me with the exact same concerns.  And you have one very important thing in common:  You ALL feel victimized.  And you have been.   Know why?  It's because you've been victimizing each other.
(Slaps own face.  HARD.)  Not because of her.  But because of this whole enchilada.
If both groups are concerned about the same issues and both want the harassment to stop, whyyyy are you still at each others throats?
Well, I think it's because good people are capable of behaving very badly, especially online.  And all they’re doing is making themselves look ridiculous.  And they do not merit support.
A lot of people have been using me as a mediator, or prism, so to speak, with regards to this issue.  But you don't need me, when you all essentially want the same damn thing.
It's time to stop participating.  All you have to do is take a step back and say to yourself (or others if you’re feeling up to it) I'm not going to support harassment, hate or damaging misinformation.  And you can do that by unfollowing abusive accounts, by not "liking" or reblogging abusive content...and/or by not contributing to it yourself.  And if enough of us did that, BOOM, on our way to a solved problem.
These are only a few suggestions.  There's no cure or quick fix for this.
Only alternatives to current behaviors.
And I know there's a lot of bad blood between these groups as evidenced by the mountains of grievances I've been getting.  Can’t un-say or undo any of it.  But we can stop doing it going forward, can’t we?
As long as people want to keep concentrating on past transgressions and dwelling on past arguments, no one can move on.
And continuing to keep score with hopes to "win" something on here isn’t working either.  I’ve got bad news:  There's no "winning" here.  No grand prize.  Just more of the same bullshit.  And if you’re happy to sit in this pile of crap and continue to marinate?  That’s your prerogative.  By “your” I mean WHOMEVER fits the bill.
It's not my responsibility to make you play nice with each other.  Or mediate your arguments.  Though, it sounds like mediation is exactly what ya'll might need.  I'm just here, publicly stating how this all looks to me: Like a never-ending playground slapfight.
I think that there will always be "haters".  That's the nature of fandom, and life in general.  But if we stop promoting that kind of behavior with our support, and if these individuals have to lurk in the back channels, as opposed to being allowed to thrive and build fiefdoms all over social media.  That sounds like a good compromise to me.
And if you have a lot to express on this matter from your own perspective, there are better alternatives to spamming people on Twitter.  For example...
Write a blog!  If you’d like to provide an objective viewpoint, and also defend your stance but you’re afraid people will see that you support actor A, B, or C and automatically discount what you have to say?  Start a side blog.  Compile a list of wrongs that you’ve seen committed by both sides and be the mirror, and show people what they’ve become.
Create your own, blank slate and start fresh.
There, now I can drop the mic.

@pypisableist
Hey. So I have Statcounter on my blog. This shows me what pages people are looking at on my blog and their IP addresses. A while ago, someone kept searching the word “pee” on my blog over and over- which was admittedly funny at the time. But here’s the deal. Recently, I found out that someone had created a blog to keep tally on (a specific group of) people who say the words “pee your pants.” Your reasoning is that you believe the phrase is ableist- I have no comment on that. That’s not what this post about.
What this post is about is the fact that you created a blog dedicated to routinely monitoring other people’s blogs for a single phrase, screenshotting and archiving their posts, keeping “tallies” on them- all without their consent. And, whether this is intentional or unintentional, you are encouraging others to do the same.
This is stalking.
Here’s what Wikipedia says:
“Cyberstalking is the use of the Internet or other electronic means to stalk or harass an individual, group, or organization. It may include false accusations, defamation, slander and libel. It may also include monitoring, identity theft, threats, vandalism, solicitation for sex, or gathering information that may be used to threaten, embarrass or harass.”
Here are some examples of cyberstalking from the wikipedia:
False accusations. Many cyberstalkers try to damage the reputation of their victim and turn other people against them. They post false information about them on websites. They may set up their own websites, blogs or user pages for this purpose. They post allegations about the victim to newsgroups, chat rooms, or other sites that allow public contributions such as Wikipedia or Amazon.com.
Attempts to gather information about the victim. Cyberstalkers may approach their victim’s friends, family and work colleagues to obtain personal information. They may advertise for information on the Internet, or hire a private detective.
Monitoring their target’s online activities and attempting to trace their IP address in an effort to gather more information about their victims.
Encouraging others to harass the victim. Many cyberstalkers try to involve third parties in the harassment. They may claim the victim has harmed the stalker or his/her family in some way, or may post the victim’s name and telephone number in order to encourage others to join the pursuit.
False victimization. The cyberstalker will claim that the victim is harassing him or her. Bocij writes that this phenomenon has been noted in a number of well-known cases.
The people you are targeting are TRAUMA SURVIVORS who all have a specific mental illness (DID or OSDD-1). Many of which have been victims of stalking. By actively namedropping and archiving their posts, they are at risk of being stalked and harassed by your followers or anyone who happens to stumble across your blog. You are putting these people in danger.
I would understand if you created a blog to keep checks on pedophiles or nazis, heck I would even understand if you were just vague blogging…but namedropping, monitoring, and archiving MENTALLY ILL trauma survivors who told someone to pee their pants? What the actual fuck?
What you are doing is NOT okay.
If you truly thought pee your pants was ableist, why would you create a blog for the sole purpose of stalking people you think are misinformed instead of messaging these people and talking to them about it? Why would you create a blog for the sole purpose of ridiculing and “tallying” people who use the phrase instead of creating a blog to educate people on why it’s ableist? Was calling out ableism even the purpose of this blog in the first place? Because what it looks like right now is that the purpose of this blog is to stalk, ridicule, and namedrop trauma survivors you don’t like under the excuse that they’re being ableist by telling people to pee their pants.
I’ve already reported this blog for these reasons. I’d encourage everyone else to do the same. I hope the person behind this blog realizes how much panic, distress, and paranoia they are causing others and rethinks their actions.
(Side note: I hope you realize that one of the posts you archived had DID systems literally calling out an endogenic system who harassed/manipulated them into posting their medical history online, then instead of apologizing when they called them out on it, the endogenic system mocked them for “being dumb enough to fall for it.” And you’re calling the DID systems the ableist ones?)

humans challenge, week 2, day 2: high school/college au warning for references to canonical character death
Even now, weeks afterwards, Mattie still half-expected to see Leo waiting for her outside the English block, at the end of class. They had always met up after third period, ready to sneak off to the gap in the hedge at the bottom of the school field. Max would meet them there, keen to hear how their day was going, and Mattie would try and trick him into doing her maths homework for her. Max didn’t fall for it very often, but it had always made Leo laugh, the fact that she kept trying.
That was all over now. Leo was in hospital - he would probably never come back to school, even if he got to come home. People had finally stopped looking at Mattie with Sympathy Eyes, and she was glad of it - she didn’t need to be constantly reminded by their pitying stares. You didn’t just forget that your best friend was in a coma. It was pretty much a constant thing.
Except, at the start of every lunch hour, when she walked out of English and Leo wasn’t standing there, in his usual place. A group of year seven girls used it now, oblivious to the history of that broken second step, with the bit of brick that jutted out at the wrong angle. It was a private landmark, known only to Mattie for now.
She crossed the basketball court and went down the slope on the other side of it, headed for the field. She and Max had kept up their tradition, as best they could, although for obvious reasons he was having to spend a lot of time with his family at present, so it wasn’t as regular as it had been before. Mattie didn’t mind. It was always nicer to see Max, but on days where he didn’t turn up, she appreciated the time to think.
Harun waved, as Mattie passed the section of the field that was unofficially reserved by the people who came there to smoke. She nodded to him. Now that Leo wasn’t there, he was the closest thing she had to a friend at school, and she had to hand it to him for trying really hard to be there for her, after Leo’s accident. It wasn’t Harun’s fault Mattie didn’t want to talk about it.
He jogged over to meet her, even though she hadn’t stopped. “Hey,” he said. “The guys are saying the assembly this afternoon might be about Leo. Like, a fundraiser or something. You know about it?”
Mattie wrinkled her nose. “What good would a fundraiser do?”
“I dunno. Raise funds.”
“Proper bright spark, you are.”
Harun grinned. His eyes were still serious, though. “Just thought you might know about it. Like if they’d asked you to go up and talk about him or something.”
She had clearly brought out the sarcasm too early in the conversation. “As if I’d do that.”
“Why not? No-one else really knows him.”
Mattie ignored that comment. “What makes you think it’s about Leo, anyway?”
“Somebody saw his dad leaving the head’s office before school today.”
This, at least, was an interesting development. “Serious?”
“Yeah.”
Mattie shrugged. “Doesn’t mean it’s to do with the assembly. It’s probably just going to be some boring exam revision shit, I wouldn’t get your hopes up.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right.”
Harun stood there for a few more moments, then when it was clear Mattie wasn’t going to further the conversation, he said goodbye to her and returned to his other friends. Mattie carried on towards the far border of the field, but she barely noticed the steps she was taking. The truth was, it hadn’t even occurred to her that the special assembly that had been announced this morning could have anything to do with Leo. She’d barely given it a second thought. But if it was just an exams thing, wouldn’t they have said? Wouldn’t it have been planned a little more in advance?
She told herself to stop worrying over nothing. It was a big school. Other things happened in it than one year nine going into hospital. Other things happened in it that were everybody’s business.
There was no sign of Max at the hedge gap. Mattie dumped her school bag on the grass and sat down next to it, crossing one leg over the other and leaning back on the palms of her hands. She could hear the sounds of a football game starting up, and over in the smokers’ corner, someone was playing music from a Bluetooth speaker. Looking uphill, she could see one of the school’s synth janitors, with a troupe of student counsellors in tow, the ones who gave up one lunchtime a week to pick up litter in the school grounds. Funny, Mattie thought, that there were people like that in the world, and there were also people like Darren Andrews, who’d asked Mattie last week how anyone was supposed to know Leo was in a coma, when he never spoke or reacted to anything in the first place.
Mattie may have shoved him against the wall of lockers. That was immaterial. Darren Andrews was an idiot.
It was true that growing up with a bunch of synths had made Leo quite a still, contained sort of person, just out of habit. Being around synths either made you mega fidgety, to make up for it, or it got you slowing right down with them. It was also true that Leo hadn’t spoken much to anyone besides Mattie, but when your family was made of technology too advanced to officially exist, and their very lives would be at stake if anyone reported them, you didn’t exactly go around inviting people over to play FIFA. If Leo was perceived as weird, it was mostly circumstantial. It just so happened that the circumstances were unknown to everyone except Mattie.
The lunch hour passed irritatingly slowly, so much so that Mattie almost thought about going over and joining Harun and his lot after all. She checked her phone a few times, just to have something to do, but there were no messages, and no new threads on Headcrack that caught her eye. Mostly, she just sat and enjoyed being cut off from it all.
********
“We understand that some of you may be upset by this news. That’s perfectly natural. Mrs Lacey, our school guidance counsellor, will be available for the rest of the afternoon, for anyone who wants to talk to her privately.”
The words washed over Mattie in a wave of meaningless sound. None of it was reaching past her ears anymore. It was like her brain had shut off, closed up the windows, barricaded the door. Nothing was getting in or out. Vaguely, she was aware that the people sitting nearest her were all looking in her direction, but she was staring straight ahead, not meeting anyone’s gaze. Her hands were in her lap, balled up in tight fists, and the sensation of nails against skin was the only part of the physical world she was properly connecting to.
The rest of it couldn’t be true, it just wasn’t. Leo was in hospital. He had been in hospital for weeks. Those were the facts, and nothing had changed about his condition, not since the day of the accident. He was sleeping. He would sleep and sleep and sleep until he woke up. The machines would stay on. That was key, that the machines stayed on. Nobody was going to turn them off. Nobody had the right to turn them off, and certainly the headteacher of Mattie’s school did not have the right to stand up in front of everyone and say otherwise.
He was asleep. He was supposed to stay asleep.
The words continued. Mrs Lacey was talking now. There were people sniffling in the audience. Stupid. They didn’t know anything. They didn’t know Leo was still asleep and they hadn’t really known him while he was awake so it was stupid if they cried now. Mattie’s cheeks were dry, she was going to see Leo again even if he didn’t open his eyes to see her, the machine was staying on. The headteacher had been wrong, misinformed somehow. Leo’s father had not really been to visit her this morning. Harun’s friend must have imagined it. The machines weren’t allowed to turn off when they were the ones doing the breathing. You didn’t just stop someone breathing.
The headteacher was talking again. Then there was music, and lots of shuffling about - people were leaving. Mattie stood up when it came to her row’s turn. Her movements were smooth and automatic. Like a synth. Like Max. Max hadn’t been at the hedge today, which meant he had probably been at the hospital. He would have stopped them switching off the machines. He must have. He wouldn’t have let them stop breathing for him.
Somebody spoke in Mattie’s ear. Harun. She looked in his direction, but she hadn’t heard him in words, just a string of noises that didn’t mean anything. His hand was on her arm. She looked at it. It seemed far away, though she wasn’t aware of her arm having grown. The sounds of people collecting their things were making strange echoes off the walls of the hall, and something in Mattie’s brain had decided to tune into those, rather than anything else. The crowd was moving towards the exit. She allowed herself to be borne along.
It was fifth period. Physics, she was supposed to have Physics. It was back that way. She needed to turn round, but the people in front of her were going this way, and Mattie’s feet were just following. There was a door at the end of this corridor. She could go out of it and double back on herself, walking back to where she should have made the turn.
She went out of the door. She didn’t turn; she kept walking straight, down the ramp and towards the basketball court. Before the assembly she had been on the field. Everything was alright on the field.
Mattie realised she was running, but only when she was already out of breath. She slowed down, having no idea how long she had sprinted for, only that she was almost at the gap in the hedge. Max wouldn’t be there. He hadn’t been there at lunch and he wouldn’t be there now. He would be at the hospital, making sure nothing was changing. Max wouldn’t let Leo down, he never had. Mattie didn’t need him to be at the gap if it meant he was at the hospital instead.
“Mattie?”
Max’s voice. No, he wasn’t there, he hadn’t been before. Mattie turned away from the gap and took a deep breath. Where had all the air gone? She was outside. It was allowed to be stuffy in the hall but out here she was supposed to be able to breathe properly. Maybe she needed a machine too.
“Mattie, it’s me. Behind you.”
She turned around. Max was there, now, standing in the gap, behind the border where the hedge should be but still fully visible for anyone to see. Instinctively Mattie pushed through to join him on the other side, and they moved out of sight.
“Max,” she said, struggling even to form that one sentence. Her mouth was foreign soil, unchartered territory that her tongue didn’t know how to plough anymore. “I can’t…”
“I tried to get here earlier,” Max said. “But there was a lot to organise. Mia needed my help.”
The sound of his voice, so measured and calm and familiar, grounded Mattie for the first time since the news. The full force of the last half an hour hit her all at once, slamming into her so hard that she almost choked. “Leo’s dead?” she croaked out.
Max moved forwards, and took hold of Mattie’s arms. “Not entirely. Listen to me, Mattie, we haven’t lost him yet, but we still might.”
She blinked. Her heart had given a leap but now it lodged in her throat, throbbing there, confusion flooding her.
“But– they said–”
“He’s been discharged from the hospital,” Max said. “They couldn’t do anything else for him. Officially, he’s died. But our father is going to continue working on him at home. He’s studied the human brain extensively, to help with creating us, and there are things he can try that the doctors won’t.”
“Like what?” Mattie asked, her eyes saucer-wide and threatening to spill.
“I don’t know, he won’t say. No-one is allowed to know, Mattie. He isn’t a licensed medical doctor, and he would be punished for falsifying a death certificate.”
“I won’t say anything,” Mattie assured him, finally able to breathe properly. Her heart was still beating fast, but with uncertainty now, and that was a thousand times better than despair.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you before the announcement. I didn’t even know Father had been to tell the school what was going to happen, not until we already had Leo home. By then it was too late to reach you.”
“Why did he have to tell the school?” Mattie asked, dazed still.
“I suspect he wants to cover all bases straight away. As far as the whole world knows, this is the day Leo died. Whoever you ask, they’ll say the same. Even if doubt is cast upon the documentation, there’ll still be a lot of people who remember it the same way.”
“But… there’s a chance he could live?”
“Yes.”
“How big a chance?”
Max looked uneasy. “I haven’t dared to ask. I don’t think it's very big at all.”
Mattie nodded. She wasn’t sure she wanted to hear the odds in any more detail, really. Any chance, however tiny, was something to hold on to, at least. “Probability,” she said, a tiny note of bitter humour edging her voice. “I never did see the point of it anyway.”
Max’s lips twitched in the faintest glimmer of his usual beaming smile. “I remember.”
“Can I see him, d'you think?”
“Not today. Probably not for a long time. My father will be with him as much as possible, and he mustn’t find out that you know.”
It made sense. A tiny, shameful part of Mattie was glad she wouldn’t be allowed. Images flickered in her mind, the sight of Leo stretched out on a table with wires running in and out of him, little lights bleeping and reflecting on his pale, lifeless skin; even in her imagination, he looked too close to being dead. Properly, irrevocably dead, like people in the churchyard where it was set in stone, just like the phrase said, un-undoable.
“But you’ll keep me updated?”
“Of course I will.”
Impulsively Mattie closed the gap between them, throwing her arms around Max. He hugged her back, and a relieved sob forced its way out of her. She had been to so many emotional extremes in such a short time. Her head was still spinning.
When they parted, Max was smiling his proper smile. “Today is a good day, Mattie. We have to keep hoping.”
“I will,” she promised.
The chance didn’t have to be big, it just had to be within her reach.

Okay so in Batman Beyond there's an episode where Bruce and Terry go see a 'Batman Musical', just imagine that goes on in Gotham and Jason finds out and asks(forces/tricks) the batfam to go.
i’m finally answering this! i had a really rough week, which is why this took a while, but i kept thinking about this prompt and laughing, so thank you for that.
and on that note: are you serious, that’s amazing. i vaguely remember watching batman beyond but i don’t actually remember all that much about it. i’ll need to look this up.
but yes. yes. i want this to be a Thing.
i want to imagine it as something between holy musical b@man! and the ember island players. like. just picture the kind of crazy misinformed shit that these people are tossing into the mix because what’s the truth and what’s the lie, no one knows, they’re going to make a musical about batman and his however many kids/sidekicks anyway
(they people putting on this play are probably college students)
(stephanie has probably dropped by to help with set designs and laughed herself sick in the process)
getting back on track, how does jason find out about it?
there are two ways i think it could happen. one: jason loves lit. we know this. he collected first editions with alfred and bruce when he was a kid. in my personal experience, if you like lit, you almost definitely like theater in some sense as well. at the very least you’ve read plays.
jason holds his goddamn red hood helmet like he’s hamlet and it’s yorick.
trust me, he likes plays.
so maybe he pays attention to the kinds of plays that are being shown around gotham. he likes going to some of the matinee performances on saturday and sunday afternoons – he can’t go in the evening because he has to patrol. sometimes alfred goes with him. it’s…nice. and yeah, going to performances means that sometimes he goes to the gotham university performances as well. they actually have pretty good ones. a couple years ago they put on the importance of being earnest and then twelfth night the next semester. he was too busy when they were putting on godspell and west side story to be able to go see them, which he’s still disappointed about.
anyway. it’s not like whoever’s putting on this ridiculous play is keeping secret about the fact that they’re making it about batman and co.
(i’ve made up my mind: it’s definitely the university kids that are putting it on. they’re the team starkid of gotham city. i bet a bunch of them said, “hey, we should do this, and also i bet it could count as our senior thesis” and they all went along with it and now they can’t turn back. they don’t want to turn back. this is going to amazing or they’re going to be arrested by batman, but god, what a way to go.)
so jason finds out, and, like steph, he busts a gut laughing about it before deciding that this is awesome and he’s definitely going to bully the rest of the family into seeing it with him. every time he thinks about bruce’s face he just starts laughing all over again. oh man. it’s going to be amazing.
the other way that jason finds out, though:
campus isn’t his usual haunt, but he’s been following some jackass with a connection to one of his open cases. spoiler has too much homework to help him, but she’s already given him the go-ahead to work on campus, which is nominally her space to patrol/operate in.
and this dude – it doesn’t really matter what he did. he’s connected to drugs or he’s friends with the wrong person or he’s done something else. jason’s going to get everything he needs from the guy and then drop him off at the precinct. with a bullet to the leg if he really annoys jason.
the thing is, the dude’s a member of the make-up crew for the batman musical. they’re doing dress rehearsals tonight. jason’s in full armor because he just wants to get this done and get back to his regular patrol routes as soon as possible. (like the rest of gotham, the campus is easy to grapple around. jason doesn’t have to touch the ground and shadows his target from the rooftops.)
the guy goes into the theater building. jason needs to make sure that he’s not meeting with anyone before jason grabs him. that’s why he didn’t take him out during any of the time that it took for the guy to cross campus to the theater building. meeting at the theater would be a good cover; there’s so much happening when rehearsing, so many people coming in and out, in all sorts of costumes and make up – if you needed to meet someone clandestinely, there are worse places that civilians have thought were secret.
jason slides through a window, makes his way up into the balcony seats so he can spy (gotham university has a very nice theater. in the past, the waynes have donated generously to it), and –
“oh my god,” jason says, staring at the stage.
he ducks down so that none of the actors can see him if they look up from their acting and past the lights to the balcony. jason tries to keep his laughter quiet, but it’s so fucking funny.
when he’s finally regained control of himself, he decides to just go for it. he feels a little bad about interrupting their rehearsal, but hey. gotham is all about unexpected surprises, and really, what else were they expecting when they decided to make a play about batman?
“can anyone point me to where brad merritt is?” jason calls as he strolls into the auditorium. his shit-eating grin is hidden beneath the helmet.
the actors all grind to a sudden stop.
“um,” says an actor who’s probably meant to be the replacement. he looks at actor-nightwing. actor-nightwing turns to actor-batman.
“he’s in the back with the rest of the make-up crew,” actor-batman says.
“cool,” jason says, hopping up onto the stage and walking past them. he shoots them friendly finger guns. “you’ll need to replace him. he’s going to be in jail opening week.”
behind the stage, jason catches a glimpse of brad before he takes in red hood stalking towards him and bolts.
“you get the assholes on campus next time, spoiler,” jason grumbles, and then he’s taking off after his target.
so jason knows and he is all about that. he is going to see that shit opening night. he’s so damn ready.
“stephanie,” he complains, sprawled out on her couch and finishing off the leftover lo mein that was in her fridge. “why didn’t you tell me what the university kids were doing?”
“what university kids?” steph asks, head still bent over her chemistry textbook.
“the theater kids,” jason says. “the batman play.”
stephanie looks up, already laughing. “i know, right?” she says. “i’ve been helping out with some of the sets in my spare time and i’ve heard bits of it and it’s going to be a thing of wonder.” she grins. “they’ve even got spoiler in it!”
“hell yeah,” jason says, getting up to throw away the lo mein carton and high-fiving steph as he passes. he sits next to her at the table. “you think we can convince the rest of the family to go?”
“i can get cass and tim,” steph says.
“i can definitely get alfred,” jason says. “probably also dick.”
they look at each other.
“he’s your dad,” steph says.
“he’s not my–” jason starts, then shakes his head. “goddammit. fine. if i get bruce to go, he’ll make damian go, as a…family bonding thing or something. two for one.”
“awesome,” steph says. “i didn’t want to try to convince the little hellion to go, anyway.”
“you’re in charge of babs,” jason says.
“sure,” steph says.
they fall into an easy silence. steph turns back to her chemistry work.
“you did that last problem wrong,” jason says, craning his head to look at her work.
steph throws her pencil at his head.
it takes two bribes, a guilt trip, and five minutes for dick to stop laughing (which jason will tolerate, because he did the exact same thing), but the entire wayne family, stephanie brown, and barbara gordon show up to the gotham university theater the opening night of The Batman Musical.
the actual name of the musical is something else, but to their family, it’s just The Batman Musical.
jason’s still horrendously disappointed he didn’t get to surprise bruce with the news of there being a play about their family. he was treasuring the idea of what bruce’s face was going to do.
“i pay attention to the theater scene, jason,” bruce said when jason brought it up. “as does alfred.”
yes, jason knew.
“and i pay attention to anything to do with batman,” bruce added. in case they get anywhere too close to the truth, he didn’t say out loud, but jason could hear the subtext just fine. paranoia, thy name is bat.
“but you’ll go see it with us, right?” jason asked.
bruce turned back to his computer.
cue the guilt trip and bruce’s eventual acquiescence. if jason didn’t get to see bruce’s face at the whole idea of it, then at the very least he was going to make absolutely sure that bruce would be at the performance.
damian’s look of disgust at the whole idea of it nearly made up for the disappointment with bruce, anyway.
they show their tickets at the door and are shown to their seats. they take up a good portion of an entire row. jason makes sure to place himself between steph and alfred. there’s a brief scuffle when tim almost ends up sitting next to damian, before bruce sighs, pushes them apart, and sits between the two of them. cass leans her head against steph’s shoulder, half-asleep; she’d had a long night, apparently. barbara catches jason’s eye and looks reluctantly amused at this whole thing. dick is flipping through the playbill on damian’s other side and laughing very, very quietly.
the musical starts and it is, indeed, a thing of wonder.
highlights of the play, since i’m not going to actually figure out what the plot of it would be:
batman dealing with villains and every so often just picking up a child and handing them a domino mask. congratulations you are now my vigilante sidekick.
in the audience, in reaction to one scene in the play jason and stephanie say, perfectly in sync: “did robin just die?”
cass, her head still leaning against steph’s shoulder: “you know...it was really unclear.”
jason and stephanie burst into raucous laughter
people don’t know much about about oracle, but she’s been active for a while, and some information must have spread. still. the general public has no idea what oracle looks like or what gender they are, so i present to you that the role of oracle in The Batman Musical is played by someone who wanders around in a bright green morphsuit and occasionally disseminates information when the batfam needs it
so many wonderful songs. jason and stephanie are already making plans to ask if the university is going to put out an album afterwards. if not, they’re pretty sure that they can convince dick and/or bruce to let them help fund one
damian is So Offended at first, but he gradually gets into it, because there’s some poking fun at batman and the idea of vigilantes in general, etc., but at the core of it the love that gotham feels for batman and his family really seeps through.

The Walking Dead, Episode 5: Never Meet Your Heroes
Episode 5 of The Walking Dead, and we spend a little longer in Hilltop, plus see what freedom looks like after a decade spent in an Alexandrian basement. This episode is divided into four or so minor plot lines, all of which build nicely on what has come before and points towards some interesting future developments, but the rapid cutting between different plotlines does make some scenes feel far too brief before the audience is snatched away to check in with another group.
As always, full review and spoilers below. Turns out I have quite a lot to say this week, make of that what you will.
The plotline which I was most looking forward to after last week’s episode was Negan’s, a sentence which I am very surprised to find myself writing but I suppose that’s the joy of Season 10. The trailer for this episode had shown Negan working with a young man who, it was strongly implied, had something to do with his escape, but that turns out not to be the case; Negan refuses to tell his new friend how he got out of the cell, which leaves me nearly hoping for a dramatic reveal later in the season of just which Alexandrian decided to let the monster out of his cell. (My money’s on Carol, because why the heck not).
As we follow Negan and Brandon, one of the creepier characters we’ve met for a while, we get a fascinating window into how the Negan Mythos has developed during his incarceration. The way in which stories morph over time is something we’re all familiar and, given the reluctance of the Grimes family to discuss the Saviour War in any great detail, it’s not at all surprising that some people believe that Negan did actually force Rick to cut off Carl’s arm, or that Negan was the one to kill Carl during the war.
I’m not even all that surprised that Negan would be disturbed by such rumours; he has always been a man who likes to think of himself as principled, and he was always fond of Carl, in his own way. We see more of this “good-guy Negan” when he encounters a woman and her son, Milo; he saves them from a small pack of Walkers and plans to get them safely to Hilltop, along with an actually quite sweet scene in which Negan tries to explain what airplane rides were like to young Milo, who is far too young to have ever experienced such things for himself.
Of course, we can’t actually has an ongoing plot-line in which Negan just helps people out, so the show thoughtfully provides us with the character of Brandon, whose father was a Saviour and who seems to have brought up on stories of the “good old days” under the rule of Negan. His intensity is disturbing from the very beginning and just gets steadily worse as he offers Negan a new Lucille, his old jacket, and then tries to bond with Negan over rating walkers on hotness and taking advantage of the weak.
The final ‘twist’ in Brandon’s arc - that he killed a defenceless woman and child to ‘prove’ himself a true Saviour - was broadcast as clearly as most major sporting events, but it was still fairly impactful, if only for the way in which Negan totally lost it. With Brandon beaten to death, Negan takes up Lucille 2.0 and the iconic leather jacket and saunters boldly into Whisperer territory, where he makes a heck of a racket before being smacked down by Beta - and that’s one fight I dearly hope we see the rest of in our next episode.
The Walking Dead has been playing around with the question of Negan’s redemption for a season and a half now, but I’m really holding out for them not to waste our time with a “Negan’s joining the Whisperers, honest!” plotline. The Whisperers means and aims have nothing in common with the rules which Negan used to value so highly - siding with them would make no sense.
Trying to lull them into a false sense of security and then beating them all to death, however? That would make plenty of sense. Negan’s supposed principles have never been incompatible with gratuitous violence.
(Gruesome Kill of the Week also goes to Negan for his frankly unnecessary use of barbed wire to slice a Walker skull in half.)
Meanwhile, back at Hilltop, Ezekiel has a dramatic cough and a tragic keepsake, both obvious signposts for someone not long for this world, and Ezekiel knows it as well. His reveal of likely thyroid cancer to Saddiq comes with the quiet melancholy of a man who knew that the treatment which had saved two generations of his family from the same disease was no longer an option for him. His decision not to tell Carol anything, even when Saddiq sets up a private radio chat between the two, is just the kind of deliberate miscommunication that really grinds my gears in a survival situation.
The diagnosis of a terminal illness comes with its own practical considerations in the world of The Walking Dead; should Ezekiel die in his sleep and reanimate quickly, he would potentially pose a massive risk to his community. We’ve seen this before (the illness in the prison, back in season 3), and Ezekiel’s reluctance to tell anyone the truth of his condition is potentially a selfish act, trading his own comfort and desires for the safety of others.
Hilltop has more than just a ticking time-bomb to worry about, though, as supplies have been going missing, and Kelly’s been lost on a hunting trip. We return to the issue of Kelly’s declining hearing, first pointed out to us in the first episode of the season, along with all the complications of trying to adapt to such changes in the Land of the Dead. Her hearing fading out at just the wrong moment means that she doesn’t hear just how loud the noise of the injured boar is - or the approach of the walkers drawn in by the noise.
Kelly is tracked down by Daryl and Connie, who’s adorable budding relationship continues to be adorable, let’s be honest here. Daryl’s still working on his ability to sign, but for a character who could in the past go entire episodes without speaking at all, he’s really keen to be able to communicate with Connie. Through a mixture of sign, speaking loudly and clearly and just writing some stuff down, he manages to tell a funny story about his own sibling. The relationship between Daryl and Connie has been built up enough that his decision at the end to help her keep a secret to protect Kelly feels understandable, even justified.
The deteriorating relationship between Yumiko (who, sidenote, might be the new leader of Hilltop? I’m not clear, but everyone is very comfortable taking all the problems to her) and Magna is dealt a few more blows this week; between the revelation that Magna has been the one stealing supplies and the final, cruel reveal that Magna actually was guilty of the crime which Yumiko once got her cleared for all adds up to a couple on its last legs - which often leads to a sudden and gruesome death, which I would really like not happen here, at least not before we get a better explanation for why the hell Magna was stealing those supplies. Is she planning to leave? Does she want an emergency stash? How did she convince Kelly to help?
FInally, we spend a little more time with the Whisperers, including some more hints that Alpha’s control over the Whisperers is not as absolute as she would like it to be, when her strategy of inflicting “tiny nicks” on the communities is challenged by a Whisperer who just wants to overrun them all. Hilariously, Alpha actually puts this idea to a vote - which receives absolutely zero support from the surrounding Whisperers, who are very good at reading a room - and then personally demonstrates the power of “tiny nicks” on the poor Whisperer in question before letting Beta slit his throat.
Alpha’’s plan to destabilise the communities seems to be progressing on to chemical warfare, as we watch Gamma gut walkers and leave their entrails spilling out into a creek. These actions are also seen by Aaron, who temporarily goes back to being a Nice Guy long enough to offer Gamma a bandage for her injured hand and even tries to make some friendly conversation with her.
This sort of fraternisation is, of course, immediately reported back to Alpha, who makes various vague comments about masks and Gamma’s need to wear a different one in order to connect with Aaron; given that Alpha can’t send a sleeper agent into Alexandria without risking the group finding out about Lydia’s continued survival, I assume that the plan will be to feed Aaron misinformation or to even try and pull information out of him via an apparently-wavering Whisperer.
I have to admit, I really want to see more of the Whisperers actually interacting with other communities; the Cold War paranoia needs some sort of release, ideally before it drives our characters to do something intolerably stupid.
Next week, it looks like we get to see Negan trying to make some friends, while Carol talks Daryl into a risky mission to deprive Alpha of a horde or two.

Ooooook, so, yesterday I announced that I was going to start adding regular, randomly-timed misinformation to my TIL feed. Y'all's collective response has been humbling and surprising -- for the most part, you don't want that*. So I won't. Why? Because if the comments to my last post are to be believed, y'all think I'm providing a valuable service, and lying once a week about what I learned would destroy the value of that service, and I really like the warm-fuzzy feeling of providing what I'm told is a valuable service. What I *will* do is start sprinkling in "two facts and a lie"-style posts, which will be announced in the post. Rules are the same as before -- PM me if you think you know the answer, I'll keep track of points, and I'll announce the non-truth just before posting the next day. I also want to think about other ways to incorporate these sorts of rationality-training "games" into my Facebook routine. Why? A couple of reasons: 1) I want to do something a little more directly interactive. As a human, I'm a social creature, and a big part of what motivates me to do these posts is the little hit of social feedback and interaction it leads naturally to. But I'm spending between 5 and 90 minutes** *every day* putting these things out, and sometimes it kind of feels like I'm firing these out into the void, never to be heard from again. It takes a lot of discipline, for me at least, to keep that up long-term, and if my recent posting pattern is to be taken seriously, the reward hasn't been enough. In other words, a game is more fun than a lecture. 2) Detecting false facts is important. Really important. It's important for navigating modern life and the media, sure, but more fundamentally it's a core skill for acquiring beliefs, in general, that are not nonsense. In particular, I got one comment that struck me in a bit of a mental funny bone: "Yeah, while I appreciate the sentiment, I'll no longer be following these posts. I simply don't have the time to play the game." Do any of you out there actually think you're *not already playing this game*? Another comment that raised a red flag for me: "Your TILs are one of the last bastions of reliable facts I know of. I don't want to have to start doubting them (unless I feel like I ought to research a claim)" Just how accurate do you all think I *am*? I am not an authoritative source of truth. I'm a human. My cognitive engine is a brain evolved for finding resources in winderness and navigating monkey societies. Even if my intent is purely to educate (which is it, in this series) and my interests were perfectly aligned with yours (which they basically are, when it comes to sharing information), *I make mistakes*. If that makes you uncomfortable... I'm sorry, I really am, but that's the best you're going to get reading stuff some guy puts up on Facebook. Seriously, in 100 facts that I tell you, how many do you think are wrong? Well, that's a question with an empirically accessible answer. I posted about 100 facts in March of 2016. Here's a link to them. I'll personally mail $15 in cash or a minimum of 3 homemade chocolate chip cookies to anyone who finds a false fact, per fact. We'll see what shows up, and that should provide a rough upper bound on accuracy. (For my part, I'm guessing y'all will find order 3 mistakes, for an accuracy of around 95% -- which is roughly what I would be promising with 1 lie/week). Of course, there's unreliable sources and there's unreliable sources. I'm claiming to be a reliable, scientifically-knowledgable, friendly, self-fact-checking source of information. 95% accuracy is much better than certain sources of information I'm sure we're all thinking about. But if you believe everything I say, you're going to be disapointed 5% of the time (or something). Ok, so I'm not 100% reliable. What can you do about it? Well, there are a lot of things you can do about it, but I would suggest the first and most important skill by far that you can acquire to avoid false beliefs is: Learn to notice when you're confused, and *actually stop* to figure out why. (I'm paraphrasing a bit from Yudkowsi. See http://ift.tt/1ivQBpH) It's absolutely frightening, from a scientist's perspective, how *easy* it is to hear a fact from a vaguely trustworthy source, and accept it, and integrate it with everything you know, and explain why it totally makes sense and how you really should have seen it coming a mile away... *even when it's wrong*. It's frighteningly *difficult* to *actually notice* when something isn't quite right about a claim. (Unless, of course, the claim is an argument against something you already believe....). Now, I'm not saying you should spent a ton of time and effort verifying every fact that anyone ever tells you. Noticing confusion should be a *reflex*, performed the way a poet learns to scan rhyme, or a musician learns to hear harmonic shifts. When you hear a claim, you should *reflexively* go through a checklist of things like "why does she think this is true?"; "what are the consequences of this claim?"; "is this what I would have expected given what I know about the world?"; "does this conflict with any other knowledge I have about the world?". That's not hard to do, but it takes practice. So. That's the skill I want to teach. Perhaps mixing lies randomly into my TILs isn't the best way to do that, and apparently it would degrade their value to the point where many of y'all wouldn't be interested anymore. Fair enough. No reason we can't have both. So, as a test program, I'm going to start running occasional "three truths and a lie" posts. While that happens, I'm also on the lookout for other ways to practice the skill of *detecting confusion*. Please let me know if you have ideas -- I need better ones than I have. Now, I should probably go write down some facts. * If there's a silent majority out there who would actually be terribly disappointed if I didn't implement the once-a-week lie thing, this is your cue. ** Trending closer to 15 minutes than 60, but still.
